Moose are responsible for way more human deaths every year than bears, so be careful mocking them!I'll be in Biddeford (close to Kennebunkport). I'm sure there's something around. And I'll watch out for moose and squirrel. Thanks for the heads up on these dangerous beasts.Sand, I was just along the coastal area back in late June. I think it's route 1 that weaves along the coast and through the towns. I don't recall running trails, but you can certainly pick out some nice roads. You might be able to ask around about trails, though. We stayed overnight in Bath (great blue-roofed seafood restaurant right on the river). I ran along the roads outside of town, but that was nothing too special. Exiting route 1 to the beach area of Kennebunkport is very nice viewing. Careful, though - that road gets busy and can move slowly. The main interstate is actually a nice drive - it's all forested on either side.I will be up in Maine for the next couple days. I am hoping to find a good running trail to hit. I've heard the coast is beautiful up there.
Are these accompanied by any Speed Humps signs? Just wondering.tri-man 47 said:They DO have some 'beware of moose' signs at spots along the highway (none for squirrels). Up around Moosehead Lake much further north, where we visited friends, they have numerous signs because they have a LOT of moose. Beautiful area up there.

Nope, didn't run yesterday...but I did hit the gym for some lifting (haven't lifted for over a monthCouldn't drag my butt out of bed this morning, so I'll be meeting a buddy tonight for a 10-miler. Somewhere in the middle we'll hit the track for 5 x 600M with 200M recovery jogs.
Keggers - Did you end up running yesterday afternoon/evening? Let me know how it goes with your speedwork today!
). Tonight it's going to be 5 x 1200M with 400M recovery on the high school track. One mile warm-up and one mile cool-down. Thank goodness for lower humidity!!!Good work.Made it to 3. Lost a lot of sweat but didnt see stars or anything.Heat index is 110 where I am at. Will I be ok going for a 2 mile run?
! I got a slow 5, quick 1 in this morning in some impressive heat/humidity. I went out super slow (9:00 p/m), just hoping to have enough in me to get back home. Had plenty left in my legs for the last mile, and was at 8:15 for the first half of it, and ran the last half at 7:30. Lots of sweat, but it felt great. Still no time on my bike, and I'm running out of training days with HH just 18 days away
Did the three miles in 23:17. That is as fast as I can possibly run that distance right now, so it will be interesting to see if I get better as I train for the 5K I'm going to do in 6 weeks. I am worn out now.Back in the old days, I liked speed work and hated distance. Now I love my long, slow runs and feel punished every time I try to run fast. But I'm very happy with the time I ran this morning. Just have to try not to walk around like a sore old man all day at work now.Tomorrow I'm going to go out and push it as hard as I can for 3 miles -- I'm curious to see how long it will take me, and I also want to establish a baseline to see if/how much I improve my time by doing the training program for the next 6 weeks (it's an 8-week program, but I'm lopping off the first couple of weeks due to the timing of the race). A couple of weeks ago, I was happily surprised to do 3 miles in 23:55 -- kind of shooting for 23:15 tomorrow, though that might be hopelessly optimistic.
Amazing run! On the track I did: one mile warm-up...then 5 x 1,200M at 5:23, 5:10, 5:04, 4:57, and 4:52 with 400M recoveries. One mile cool-down. Total of 6.75 miles. The last 1,200M really hurt but I wanted keep improving my time. The cool-down mile was slow and I walked a bit of it.Immediately after the run I played TWO volleyball matches. One was with my regular co-ed team and the other was on a men's team that needed a sub. When asked to sub I sort of shrugged and said, "Sure, what the hell?" Both matches were pretty good workouts because we play indoors where it's hot and humid. I was sweating as soon as we stepped onto the sand. I'm glad today is a rest day...I'm sore.Anyone racing this weekend?[Tonight it's going to be 5 x 1200M with 400M recovery on the high school track. One mile warm-up and one mile cool-down. Yeah, I think so. Just tried calling a little while ago, but no answer. Just wanna tell them that they need to keep their mutt on a leash before it does bite somebody, you know?!Nice job on your workout! Did you track down the owner of that dog yet?![]()
Great job, gruecd. Sometimes it's hard for me to know if you consider your workouts a success or not -- they all seem blindingly fast to me.Isn't it amazing that no matter how tired you feel at the end of a run, there's always a little reserve of adrenalin that kicks in for things like dog attacks?Ended up making dinner plans, so I ducked out of work a little early to do my speedwork this afternoon in the 80-degree temps. Started with about 4.5 easy miles at 7:50 pace, ending at the track. Then 5 x 600M at 2:19, 2:20, 2:18, 2:18, and 2:18 (a little over 6-minute pace) with 200M recoveries. Finished with a little over a mile cool-down home. Total of 8 miles.A dog chased me on the way home, and since I was wearing my iPod (save the lecture), I didn't hear the damn thing until it was pretty much on my heels. Fortunately, it didn't attack, or else I don't know what I would've done. Regardless, I'm gonna head back over that way a little bit in my car to get the house number and to see if anybody's around. If so, I'm going to kindly ask them to keep their POS dog on a leash next time. Grr.Have a great night, everybody!
Absolutely, and in the interest of full disclosure, I totally screamed like a girl when I finally saw the damn thing coming after me!Isn't it amazing that no matter how tired you feel at the end of a run, there's always a little reserve of adrenalin that kicks in for things like dog attacks?

. I then sucked it up and did my best to kick it in. I was able to keep it at 20.8 the rest of the way, and treated the last full mile (mile 37) as an interval. I averaged 22 MPH for the final mile even though it was directly into the wind, included 2 sharp turns, and the crossing of railroad tracks. Even with the effort, my HR only maxed out at 172.
), and my max HR was 172 (last full mile). My legs still felt fresh coming in = I'm in for HH!! I most likely will only get two more rides in prior to it, and can actually almost start my taper after only 1 real workout
You're spanking it on the bike. A 21 mph average on the road bike is hualing ####.BnB: nice run! Too bad to hear about the bike course. The higher the % of the time on the bike in a tri, the better I typically do, which is most certainly the case for you as well. Gruecd: You might want to start carrying a stick like Poppa! It truly is amazing how much adrenaline a dog (or a wild boar, but that day I think I might have actually peed myself a bit as well) can give you in the middle of a run. ______________________________________________My update:I had a GREAT bike ride this morning. I haven't ridden more than 26 miles on any given ride since last February, and haven't ridden more than 26 on my road bike since last October, but headed out this morning with a goal of getting in 35+. My legs felt great through the first 5 miles, where I maintained a very consistent 20 MPH pace. With my HR still well below 150 I decided to kick it up a bit to see what I had in me (to put it into perspective, I typically get up to 160+ after 2 miles of running; and try to maintain 172-177 while racing). I jumped on the pedals and easily maintained 22 MPH for the next 15 miles, with little affect on my HR. After 31 miles my HR was still below 160 and I was averaging 21.0 MPH. At that point I knew I had just over 6 miles left which was into the wind, and slightly uphill. I mentally decided to try to finish as close to 21.0 overall as possible. Unfortunately I needed to go under an overpass soon after = I had to cross two stop lights. I was .76 through that mile, averaging a 2:51 speed in frick'n hit BOTH lights red going through, and the second one is right before a small hill. My split for that mile was 3:42 = I lost almost a full minute just bc of stop lights (My overall average dropped to 20.8). I then sucked it up and did my best to kick it in. I was able to keep it at 20.8 the rest of the way, and treated the last full mile (mile 37) as an interval. Awesome ride, man. I'm up with taking on Culdeus (and watching him drop us at mile .5). I have been riding right about the same speed (my last race I averaged 21.6 with mechanical issues) - we need to ride together. Where the hell is Margaritaville?Hit the bike repair place on Monday thinking that they'd agree I spiked my derailleur hanger. Turns out I hit and bent my cable. Never even saw it. I needed a tune up, anyway. Should be back on the steed tomorrow.Never did get to run up here in Maine. Rainy, nasty weather about the time I had to go out running. Nice run TM. Just for fun, I looked at what that 3 mile time (translated to a 5k of 24 even) equates to on my race pace chart:Did the three miles in 23:17. The only difference is that instead of continuing to run at that pace for another 26 minutes, or 1 hour 27 minutes, or 3 hours and and 29 minutes, I had to dump half a bottle of water on my head and then go into my cooling routine -- come inside the house, crank down the thermostat so the AC kicks on, turn the kitchen ceiling fan on high, then collapse into the chair that I strategically position right above the AC vent underneath the fan. When my 6-year-old comes down for breakfast and sees me sitting there, she immediately goes back to her room for a sweatshirt. In my defense, it was something like 75 degrees this morning with humidity higher than that.Nice run TM. Smilies added. But you had me at "us."Your point is well-taken, though. My recent 1/2-marathon time converts to about 3:32 (with proper training). I need a sub-3:36 for Boston 2010, but a sub-3:46 for Boston 2011 (new age bracket), and this race would work for both! I bought a pair of those when I was up in Oregon in July, and have worn them for my long runs and the marathon ever since (and bought another pair). They take a little getting used to, but I like them. I get a hot spot between the two smallest toes on my left foot, and they have kept that under control. I don't think they would be as good as my DryMax for wet conditions, but I haven't seen rain for 4-5 months, so haven't tested yet.As for your pics, well, not your pics, but of your friend:BTW, ultra-runners, I saw a magazine-promo recently for socks from Injinji ...they're like gloves (vs. mittens) for the feet, which helps prevent blisters.
Also, tri race pics are out. You can thank me for these pics (swim in particular) of her. (Don't know who the gal in blue is interrupting our girl's photo spread.) I'll have them work on better lighting for the swim pics next year. Seeing this gal in her suit before the race made my tri-gear go quattro.

Work and working out is keeping me from here and man there is a lot going on. Good week for me including swims of 3,000 & 2,000 yards, a dynomite bike last night with my little triathlete in training and a fast 5-miler on Tuesday Night.Set a new record for me today. I did a 5k in 33mins. This was on a treadmill but still is the fastest I have done a 5k. Tomorrow I will be hitting the elyptical and I hope to do 6 miles Saturday before going to the Dbacks/Dodgers game. I figure I can drink more if I get a nice long run in. My stress test is scheduled for next Wed. I feel fine but I am still going to do it. Just for peace of mind if nothing else. I have also always felt I run out of breath faster then the avg guy. Hopefully this test will tell me if I am correct in that assumption.

Looks like mine are out, as well. Why do I look like I run like a duck in that first pic? Egads. I did happen to run into her before the start. Talk about distracting. There was one other who flew by me on the run, and I can't find her.
