Ran a 10k in June (7 Viewers)

Came out flat and lost our damn basketball game tonight. We were undefeated coming into tonight's game. I effing hate losing. :goodposting:

Hey guys. Been forever since i gave an update and i will explain. Over the last two weeks, things have bee quite crazy around my house. At least everyone in the house has been sick at least once. I have had sinus problems/infections since the friday before Xmas so running has not been my best advisary. I have only been able to run about 5 times in the last couple of weeks. To top everything else off we have been running around to doctor appointments because he was diagnosed with hearing loss and we have been trying to get as much done before the turn of the year for insurance purposes. It has been a crazy two weeks.

As with most, my pants seem to be feeling a bit tighter as well. With all the down time I have adjusted my goals for this year. I have added getting 2000 miles in this year as well as dropping my weight to 165. Both attainable, but I am excited to go after them. I have logged 12 miles already so I feel I am well on my way. I know training for the Pig starts next week so hopefully it will do me good to get back into a routine.

Hope all is well. I have not read much to see what else is going on except for peeing while riding a bike. What is going on in here?!?

Evidently just a lot of urination.2000 miles is quite the goal! BTW, what is the Pig?

You run more when you're sick that most of us do when we're well.

Flying Pig Marathon

Better day today. 5 miles in #######' cold, windy weather. Finished it up at 7:44/mile.
I was gonna give you crap for whining about the "cold" in Alabama, but then I looked and saw that it actually was pretty cold down there yesterday. Not quite as cold as we've got it here in Wisconsin, but still pretty damn cold!

Hey everybody - hope everyone had a great holiday.

I went to Indiana for a week to visit family and couldn't get out the door for a run for the entire time. I was sort of hoping it would be like a taper week and that I'd come back rested and without any drop-off. Got back on Saturday and did 5 at a pretty fast clip but was feeling it. Went 10 yesterday and it was the slowest I've run in about 2 months. Not sure what to make of it, but It's hurt my confidence a bit for the 1/2 (AZRnR) in 2 weeks.

Hey, jon. Just curious--why couldn't you make time over the course of seven days to get out for at least a couple of runs??Hope you had a great holiday, too.

Flying Pig Marathon
I've heard good things about that one, but I'll probably never be able to do it, because the timing sucks for me. It's always held on the first Sunday in May, which is smack dab in the middle of Boston and Green Bay.
I have not ran it yet...trained for it twice, but things have come up. From what I hear it is a great race. Well put together and there is a ton of fan support along the way. I think the only negative that I have heard is that there is one stretch of highway that fans can't get to because it is partially open that gets pretty boring, but still here it is worth it. Hopefully I will let you know how it goes this year.

I listen to a podcast from some guys in Pennsylvania that ran Flying Pig a few years back. They said the one thing they were not expecting was how hilly the course is. Something to keep in mind as you train.

Speaking of marathons ...Workhorse is one or two weeks away from his race, now?

And speaking of training, the new Runner's World has a good article on core/ab training. They present a little test for the abs: Assume the plank position (resting on forearms and toes - body straight), then 'jump' the legs out to the side about 18 inches and jump them back together. Repeat as many times as possible without having to rest. See if you youngsters can beat my 35.

jumping in this thread. anyone doing the mississippi blues marathon or half? i started really running back in may, started out a 240lb couch potato/gamer. now down to a "leaner" 215lb dude about to give a shot at a half marathon.

any tips, tricks, advice?

I would really like to do the blues marathon or half just because it's close (i'm in Little Rock) and it looks like a fun race. This year doesn't really fit in with my training schedule, but I might do it in 2011. I'd be very interested to hear what you think about the experience. I think this race was mentioned in RW last month as the marathon that gives away the engraved harmonicas to all finishers, right?

I know that from mile 5 to 9 is one big hill or up hill with little flats, but around here there are tons of hills. If you do not do any hill training in prep for this it will crush you. After that big hill it is mostly down hill although I hear there are a few more uphills that are a challenge. I have heard this is not the place to BQ or set a PR, but I know a bunch of people that have so I believe it is all in your training. But I can see that if you only were able to train on flat ground you would be in trouble here.

:bag: It was about 30 with a wind chill of 20 - in the middle of the day. For us that is cold.

Wish I could give you a good reason. Unfortunately, mine all seem pretty lame. Since I'm an AZ runner, I really don't have winter gear. I should probably buy some, but it just seems like a waste since they may only be used 1-2 times a year. Temps all last week were in the 20's. That doesn't mean I couldn't have found a gym with a day pass I could buy. Other than the cold, there were multiple days where the family schedule didn't really allow it - maybe 3 of the 6. If I really wanted to, I could have found the time and place. The only real positive on the trip from a health perspective is that I didn't put on any holiday weight - actually dropped a couple pounds.

yeah, i heard about the harmonica. with this being my first i doubt i will have any genuine input as to how the race was, but i will update. im a little worried about the weather. hi 30 low 15 that day. that cold anywhere.....mississippi its down right frigid.

Welcome to running ...and this thread! Nice to hear of the weight loss already achieved. That's probably a combination of the exercise plus a better awareness of your overall health and diet. Long runs are important to your training, and that's where you'll burn more calories, too. You can find on-line training resources - Runner's World, or search for the popular Hal Higdon training programs. I'd say:- build your mileage to the extent you're comfortable. Some say you don't need to run the distance before the race. Others (like me) feel it's beneficial to have run the distance or even a bit further to give confidence.- run three to five times a week - your choice. It will depend if you do any cross-training, which would be good. Some strength work or core/flexibility training; maybe some biking or swimming. But it's OK if you just run!- keep alert to your running gear as you put in more miles. The right shoes are critical. Non-cotton gear is recommended, too. You might want to get a fuel belt, back pack, or hand-held water bottle for the longer runs in warmer weather.- it would probably be good to add a couple shorter races before the half-marathon. That will give you the feel for the race environment and help you learn about pre-race routines, the start-of-race pacing, etc.- keep checking in! We love to hear of each other's progress, successes, and even the stumbles.

thanks for the input. i pretty much fall into the 3-5 times a week category. its been fun. im finally at the point to where i dont drea it, actually look forward to an after work run. been planning on this half since about the summer. lots of 6-8 mile runs under my belt, so thats become pretty routine. i feel pretty confident about being able to do the 13.1. here is my only "long run" which i kind of surprised myself in doing. my left foot hasnt been the same since, so i have scaled back the runs to 4 or 5 miles since that run. its still not 100%, but good enough.

Congrats on taking the plunge. Before I start handing out advice, tell me a little bit more about your running. How much mileage have you been doing, how much time can you devote to training, do you have any goals besides just finishing, etc.

I'm back after dropping out of this thread following a 5K I ran in September -- my first race since high school almost 25 years ago. After that, I got too busy with work to run, plus it was dark in the morning, blah, blah, until I got on the scale after the holidays are realized it was time to HTFU.

So I just started training again, and plan to run the half-marathon at the National Marathon in DC on March 20. Seven miles is the longest distance I've ever run before, so it will be a good challenge. Not sure yet what my target time is going to be, but I'm thinking maybe an 8:30 pace.

It was certainly cold enough in Maryland last weekend, but I didn't mind the temps as much as the 25+ mph wind out there, especially Sunday. I didn't feel it much when it was at my back for 3 miles, but OMFG did I feel it for every step of the inward 3 miles. I almost quit running a half-dozen times until I reached the bottom of the hill just a half-mile from home, when the wind gusted so hard that it almost knocked me off-stride backward. It was just crazy.

And at that moment, instead of giving up, I got pissed. I was like, "Is that all the harder you can blow? Is that all you got? Because that weak s(tuff) is not stopping me." And I cranked it home for the last half mile at my fastest pace of the day. Although I have to admit that I was worried I had provoked the Wind Gods with my attitude and feared that a tree limb would come crashing down on me at any moment until I got home.

Dude - who was diagnosed with hearing loss?? regardless I hope the prognosis is good. So I STILL haven't run - this officially sucks. Since I've gotten no better I finally got to a chiropractor this morning for an adjustment. She showed me an x-ray of my spine that looks somewhat off center but otherwise healthy - she feels she can get me back to 100% pretty quickly. I hope so. Two more appointments this week and by then I hope to go for (at least) a short run over the weekend. I also need to get the bike trainer set up in the basement and get a training tire.

I am looking for an easy to do/read template to keep track of my mileage for 2010. I kept track in 2009 but it would be a PIA to add it up as I did it in a "notes" kind of thing. Anyone have any suggestions? I guess I could make my own in a spreadsheet thing. I want to track mileage and times.

* I am not to good with the computer thing so I need it as idiot proof as possible.
Go to Runner's World.com and click on "Log" at the top of the screen.
:loco: I have been using the log feature this year. I went in today and it is gone. I click on log and it goes no where. Has anyone had this problem? I am now thinking I do have to make a spread sheet for this. I am just not very computer savy and dont want to have to do this. Why would the log feature be gone? The word "log" is there at the top of the screen but it brings me no where.

If you just want a log, use the free one at beginnertriathlete.com. It is a good tracker - lots of visualization options. And it is free.

Ya know that thread on the gym being packed with n00bs after the new year? The same thing appears to have hit my pool. We were 3 and 4 to a lane tonight (3 in mine). Only silver lining was that I certainly got in some good siting practice and a bit of drafting as well. I had read that it was polite to give the person in front of you a tap on the foot is you are going to pass. I am quite sure neither the guy or the woman in my lane had read this as I freaked both of them out the first time I did it and then explained why I was doing it ('cuz I was the fastest in my lane :bowtie: ). Did 2,500 yards total tonight.

Yeah - that is standard. But not surprising that they didn't know the bat signal.Update for me. I am now down to race weight thanks to losing 6 lbs. yesterday. Awful, awful day. I plan on getting one more run in tomorrow (prolly on the dreadmill) and then show up for the race on Saturday. Supposed to be a balmy 13 degrees at race start - woohoo!

Did my speedwork this morning at the local HS track at the brisk temperature of 15 F. I would have been fine doing a regular run, but the speedwork made me breath heavy and my lungs nearly froze. I don't know how you guys up north do it. Anyway, did a mile to calibrate my Nike+, then did 4x800 at a target pace of 3:42 per 800m. Finished my repeats at 3:36 / 3:42 / 3:43 / 3:39.

 tastes really good this morning.

Thanks for the wishes. It is my youngest son. Right now it is a partial loss, but we are going through all the tests to decide if it will be a gradual loss to permanent or if it will stay as it is. The CTScan is tomorrow afternoon to see if there is anything wrong with the inner ear or a tumor. All this being said, I am not down yet until the doctors give us bad news. He is still as happy as can be which keeps me in great spirits about the whole things. We still have a big, tough road ahead of us, but we will travel the path given and get through it.--------------------

As for your back. Are you having muscle spasms at all in your back? I am wondering if the chiro mentioned it at all to you. I have some pretty tough experiences with my back. Here is what I went through briefly as I will spare the boring details. The injury occured in college and I have a partially shifted vertebrate (L5) by about a 1/4 inch. I had it treated and it will never heal, but will be patched with cartiledge. If there is any more trauma too the injury it could need surgery to have a rod put in and everything straightened out. This is not were my problem arose. About 9 years after the injury I started to experience sciatica (sp?) down my right leg. Worst pain I have ever been through. Went to a pain specialist and they gave me a series of epiderals that numbed the nerve so I do not feel pain anymore. After the epiderals, I waited a couple of months and began running to test it out. I have been running ever since. I only give you this so that you get it taken car of now, but also pass along the best advice given to me by the pain specialist. If you are having muscle spasms, they are greatly increased by drinking caffeine. I used to drink diet pop all day long. Once he told me this, I dropped it cold turkey and have not had all but caffeine in chocolate for about 3.5 years. It was a big change, but a good one. Not sure if it will help you or not, but it could not hurt to ask you chiro if the caffeine could affect it or not. Also not sure if you want to cut out the caffeine if you do drink coffee or pop, but it has made a big difference in everything me from my back to the way I sleep at night.

pmb - let us know what you find. I hope it's a temporary condition. I have an inner ear disorder (Meniere's Disease), which is neurological, as opposed to a middle ear/infection type of issue. My thoughts are with you and your family!

Thanks for the thoughts. From what we have found so far, the hearing loss is permanent. Luckily it is mild at this point and hopefully will stay that way. We will know more next week after all the tests are done. I will keep you guys posted as I find out stuff. The information is slowly trickling in. There are only about 100,000 different things it could be at this point and my wife has gotten her doctorate trying to diagnose him from the internet. She is scaring herself silly right now.

The waiting for a diagnosis is the worst part. Especially, considering that most of us - like your wife - try the self-diagnosis via the internet. My 2-yr-old had a very low white blood count in early 2009 and started having excessive bruising on his legs and arms. It ended up only being a virus-related thing, but the time between the initial doctor's visit and the follow-up for bloodwork results was by far the most difficult. Thoughts and prayers your way.

Update for me. I am now down to race weight thanks to losing 6 lbs. yesterday. Awful, awful day.
 That cannot be good.
Agreed. That sounds like the type of thing only explosive vomiting or diarrhea could be responsible for.
Pretty much - twas a bad day. Thinking food poisoning. The good news is I woke up today essentially fine. A bit more tired than normal, but fine.

Dude - who was diagnosed with hearing loss?? regardless I hope the prognosis is good. So I STILL haven't run - this officially sucks. Since I've gotten no better I finally got to a chiropractor this morning for an adjustment. She showed me an x-ray of my spine that looks somewhat off center but otherwise healthy - she feels she can get me back to 100% pretty quickly. I hope so. Two more appointments this week and by then I hope to go for (at least) a short run over the weekend. I also need to get the bike trainer set up in the basement and get a training tire.

First and foremost, positive thoughts and prayers for your son. I'm not sure I completely understand the problem, but I know in the x-ray my hips were a little out of alignment, as was my spine. The symtom was (is) constant pain in my lower right back with occasional siezing if I moved the wrong way. Started 12/24 after tweaking my back shoveling ice & slush. But the pain isn't bad (maybe a 3/10) except for when it siezes up, and that passes quickly after I fall to the ground...

After 2 adjustments with the chiropractor, I'm still very sore but the original pain seems to be diminishing. She doesn't want me running yet, but I can climb on the bike and try swimming - I'll do at least one of those tomorrow. My next appt. is Thursday and we'll see how I feel after that. I appreciate you sharing your story!

As far as caffeine goes, I drink 1/2 pot of coffee in the morning and 24-36 oz. of Diet Mountain Dew pretty much every day as a baseline - if we go out I'll drink more diet pop unless I'm drinking beer. It's the only vice I have left and I have no (current) intention of abandoning it. I probably should, but I really don't want to.

Thoughts and prayers to pmbrown. Hope all goes well. We had a similar scare with my oldest son when he was young. I did the whole diagnosing thing on the innernet and it was scary. Our son turned out ok after getting tubes in his ear and adenoids removed. That thread may still be around on here but it was many years ago. I hope all goes as well with your son.

I got a nice run in today after work. It was a balmy 70 out. :excited:

For me, it's Diet Pepsi, but otherwise.....Amen, brother. :towelwave:

Others are much more qualified to advise you than me, but I would probably do a little shorter than 6 (maybe 4) tonight if you have your race on Saturday. I don't remember specifically what you've said you're training has been but I'm assuming if this is your first half, 6 miles - while not difficult - is a bit more than a casual, easy run.

Focus more on dinner on Thursday night, than Friday night (and hydration on Thursday & Friday). Thursday's dinner should be your carb/energy meal (whatever carb based foods you like to fuel with). My pre-race meal has remained unchanged for the last few years and works for me. First, I eat early, no later than about 5pm. I typically have a bland grilled chicken breast, steamed spinach and a small side of noodles of some sort. Continuing the bodily function theme of the week, you want to eat early so your system is ahead of the game in the morning. If you like red wine and need to shake some jitters on race night, a glass of red wine about an hour or so before bed is good for this and helps the digestion along as well. For breakfast, I typically had a banana and a Clif Bar. I have recently switched the Clif bar to peanut butter toast and think I like this better. I have a cup of strong coffee right when I get up to get things going. There will likely be a few folks that will disagree with 2 days of no running before the race, but I am with you on this. I would think about a 2 to 3 mile walk, though, 2 days out.A few more things. If you haven't, study the course map and know where the water stops are and picture yourself taking water at them ahead of time. Know when you'll take Gu, beans, etc too. There will be a lot going on around you and in your head. Picturing what you'll do ahead of time will make it easier to not miss water, etc when you need it. Finally, have fun. There was a great article in last month's Triathlete about the last finisher of Ironman Kona (in official time). To sum it up, the guy was in his 60s and did his last ironman like 20 years prior. His intent was to take it all in instead of spending 140.6 miles worrying about things. Spend some time taking in the scenery, thank the volunteers (and high five them) and be excellent to other runners. I'll admit I did none of these for my 1st 1/2 and I missed out.

First good luck and have fun.I do agree that 6 is probably a bit much, but if you take them real easy then I don't see a problem with it. A lot depends on what you are used to during your training. You don't want to tax your body so it is trying to recover for those two days. You really just want to keep some of your fitness level up for the race. Just take them easy and you will probably be ok.ETA: 2Young beat me to it.As for the eating. Instead of a big dinner on Friday night, make a pasta meal on Thursday night and eat lighter on Friday night. Something easily digested. From everything that I have read, anything you eat the night before a race really does not have time to digest and become useful to the body during the race. Just my 2 cents and others may have a differing opinion.

Did some travelling by plane yesterday and had some time to read this month's Triathlete cover to cover. For those interested in triathlon, this is a must get in my opinion. I was full of great advice for all 3 disciplines for the beginner up to the pro. I don't know if the bookstore version will have it, but my copy in the mail also came with an additional magazine that profiled all of the sanctioned 70.3 & full ironman branded events. My near term goal is to do a 1/2 IM this year, but also want to do an Ironman 70.3 branded event someday soon too and would like it to be Ironman 70.3 Boise. It was cool to read through all of th race profiles and dream big about doing some of the events some day.

thanks guys, will let everyone know the results. i intend on having fun so no problem there. im running with a couple of friends which should help. already ridden the course a few times and run some of it.

my biggest fear: 7am race time; temperature.......12 degrees :moneybag:
