Thanks for the help. I guess I just ran harder then I had to. Looks like those GA HR runs will be real slow but in 100 degrees I dont know that I have a choice. I did ok with the higher HR Monday so I may stick with it. Thanks again for your help.'Ned said:Its no big deal. To Tri's point - you still ran. Doing 1 LT vs GA isn't going to destroy you. You just ran harder than you possibly needed to. Better to figure this all out right now since you just started the plan. I'm right there with you on needing the structure. If I don't have something mapped out in front of me, I'll be on the sofa eating a box of oreos.I think you're mixing the two together. If you want to run based on HR, you run at speeds you can maintain the prescribed HR ranges. The beauty of HR training is it's an up to the minute look at your fitness. The paces you can run in these ranges may be faster or slower compared to the paces your calc'ed from your HM time. The biggest factor is weather and how much you've gained/lost over the spring/summer since the HM.Here's the HR ranges for you based on 191 max:Recovery = <76% (<144.2)GA = 70-81% (133.0 - 153.9)Long/MLR = 74-84% (140.6 - 159.6)MP = 79-88% (150.1 - 167.2)LT = 82-91% (155.8 - 172.9)VO2 max = 93-95% (176.7 - 180.5)Ned you are correct I did it wrong. I am not sure what I am doing????? I am using McMillan calculator for paces. I used the HR formula in the Pfitz book. I used my 1/2 time from 3/2011 of 2:10:40My resting HR is 50 and highest I hit was 191.15k-1/2 marathon pace is 9:46-9:59 (HR 157-174)general aerobic/tempo is 9:59-10:16 (HR????)long run is 11:02-12:02 (HR 142-160)recovery is 12:02-12:32 (HR???)I guess I dont know what the GA HR would be. I guess the lactate threshold would be my 15k-1/2 calcs, right?Anyone please feel free to tell me if something is wrong with the above. What would my GA HR be for these hot days? Thanks for any help.Triman- I hear what you are saying but I really need structure. Its a mental thing. I could just run on a trail for enjoyment but I need structure for the end goal of the marathon in December.
I don't know how he does it. Its not a surprise he's the fastest runner in here. He's the most dedicated. Meanwhile I've taken 2 days off.....gotta get through some runs tomorrow, Friday and Saturday. Got a Warrior Dash on Sunday. My first one and have no idea how tough that type of race is. I'll probably be running my long run the day before. I'll let the Warrior Dash be my speed workout?!?!?! Sounds like a plan!Prosopis - nice job on the pacing and HR! We had a low 60 degree, low humidity morning here in Chicago, and wow, what a difference it makes. I ended up popping a 7 miler (7:40/mile and a 159 HR).I'll be able to let everyone know if I can/can't make it on Friday. If I can't, I will also plan on getting there as a driver the team's official race stalker if y'all will take me!!
I meant to do 1 mile @10:54 for a warmup then 2.5 @9:22. I didn't do it.When I got to a 1/2 mile of warmup I got bored so I started the 9:22 at that point and just decided to go as far as I could. It ended up being my fastest 3 miles in over 3 years, I was able to keep up the 9:22 the whole time. I slowed down to 10 for the last half mile. Honestly I think I pushed it just a bit, but it felt great.Four times today I decided not to do today's run, four times I decided to do the run. I am glad I did it. 4 miles with 1/2 mile intervals with 1/4 mile rests at 10:54. 1 mile warmup at 10:541/2 @ 9:221/2 @ 8:571/2 @ 8:341/2 @ 8:22I felt great, during and afterward. When I was doing the 9:22 half I felt like I could keep it up for a while, so I am going to try to do 2.5 at that pace in the middle of a 4 mile run on Thursday.

Had my first really good "quality" workout of the training cycle tonight: 2 miles up, 5 tempo at 6:23/6:20/6:22/6:27/6:29, and 3 down. Considering my stressed-out, sleep-deprived state plus the fact that I've run 77 miles in the last 8 days, I'm definitely happy with the 6:24 average pace on the tempo miles (although I did run out of steam a little bit on the last two).
I want to do 12 miles combined over the next two days before knocking out 18-20 with some MP miles on Sunday. Debating if I want to do the 12 as a 5/7 double so I can have a rest day. Not sure.

Good luck man. Remember to start slowFinal workout before race Saturday. I've gotten fat and slow (mostly because I haven't swum for snot in the last couple months). 1:05 100, 2:30 200, and a 6:28 500. Boo hiss. Luckily the swim here is short. The bike is long, and I've been torching myself week after week on the bike, so it should be a good race.
I just five easy miles on tap later today to finish out the week -- nothing exciting. Next week is going to be mess. I've got a few things booked on Mon and Tues but nothing I can't run around as long as I keep the rest of my calendar reasonably clear. Unfortunately, I'm tied up all day on Thursday and Friday, so I may have to experiment with this "running before work" thing that you guys keep talking about.![]()

Thanks. Probably closer to 15K. Theoretically, at least.Damn that's a hell of a tempo run. That's your 10Kish pace? Great stuff.

Good luck, and more importantly, have fun! You, too, Sand!Sunday will be my Warrior Dash (on tired legs).
Screw you man!I did 4 miles the other day, and it was 105 degrees.Another glorious morning. Dare I say a bit chilly? Regardless 57 degrees, dewpoint at 54 -- ran 6.54 miles at a 8:16/mile pace. Average HR was 149.

BTW -- while running today, I was thinking about how I consider myself in above average shape. I did 1 mile intervals last weekend and I did two of them at 6:50/ea with a 4 minute break in between. Meanwhile Grue banged out a 10 mile run with miles 3 through 7 to be at about 25-30 seconds/mile faster than I can run one mile. Pretty humbling.Great work, Darrin. Keep it up Grue. Just make sure you wait up for me at the finish line!

Good luck! 10k is my favorite running distance.I am racing a short tri tomorrow (600yd swim, 16mile bike, 3 mile run). Thanks for the well wishes, guys. My kids have gotten sick last couple of days and I feel like #### this morning, but hopefully it will clear up by tomorrow. If it doesn't that will just spoil my plan to throw up on the finish line - I'll just spread the vomit around all over the place.Who all is racing this weekend? I am doing my first ever 10K race. It's a trail run with a bunch of hills and stuff. I am hoping for a 1:20, but I don't do a lot of hills or trail so we shall see.No matter what though, I am setting a PR tomorrow![]()
Good grief. That is on my "wow I want to do that but I'd surely die" list. You are a beast, sir.Just thought I'd give one of my few updates per year on here.....Heading off to Colorado (Leadville) on Sunday for camping/road biking/hiking and then the Pikes Peak Ascent on 8/20. I've done the Pikes Peak Marathon 3 times and thought just the Ascent would be cool this year. Hoping to break my best "up" time of 3:46 since I won't have to worry about heading back down....should be about 3:15 - 3:30 to go 13.1 miles from 6,800' to 14,115'....probably good enough for a top 200 out of 1,800.
Also going to hike up two 14ers and bike Independence Pass from Leadville to Aspen the week before. Going to be an awesome/crazy week.
I troll this thread from time to time, keep up the good work fellas.

Going down is actually way tougher than going up. I always want to kill myself by mile 22 or so. Full marathon time has always been around 6:20 (puts me in the top 150/800....winner finishes in about 3:45.If you guys camp, could always put together a FBG camping/Pikes Peak Ascent/Marathon trip for a few days of beers, hiking, biking, shooting the ####.
