Ran a 10k in June (8 Viewers)

More cow stories...less stories about shots to the groin.

Somethings are best kept to yourself. Except if the nurse is hot and you get pics. :)

Monday pm: Get an MRI of my knee (30 minutes of motionless, loud torture) to see how damaged
The up-side is that you could use that time to review my complete love-life over the past, oh, three years, or the highlights of your adventures over the past, um, couple of weeks.BTW, this isn't all sounding too encouraging for the Bourbon Chase in two months. If you can't run, will you still come along ...to drive, herd horsies, drink bourbon?

Ned you are correct I did it wrong. I am not sure what I am doing????? I am using McMillan calculator for paces. I used the HR formula in the Pfitz book. I used my 1/2 time from 3/2011 of 2:10:40My resting HR is 50 and highest I hit was 191.15k-1/2 marathon pace is 9:46-9:59 (HR 157-174)general aerobic/tempo is 9:59-10:16 (HR????)long run is 11:02-12:02 (HR 142-160)recovery is 12:02-12:32 (HR???)I guess I dont know what the GA HR would be. I guess the lactate threshold would be my 15k-1/2 calcs, right?Anyone please feel free to tell me if something is wrong with the above. What would my GA HR be for these hot days? Thanks for any help.Triman- I hear what you are saying but I really need structure. Its a mental thing. I could just run on a trail for enjoyment but I need structure for the end goal of the marathon in December.
Its no big deal. To Tri's point - you still ran. Doing 1 LT vs GA isn't going to destroy you. You just ran harder than you possibly needed to. Better to figure this all out right now since you just started the plan. I'm right there with you on needing the structure. If I don't have something mapped out in front of me, I'll be on the sofa eating a box of oreos.I think you're mixing the two together. If you want to run based on HR, you run at speeds you can maintain the prescribed HR ranges. The beauty of HR training is it's an up to the minute look at your fitness. The paces you can run in these ranges may be faster or slower compared to the paces your calc'ed from your HM time. The biggest factor is weather and how much you've gained/lost over the spring/summer since the HM.Here's the HR ranges for you based on 191 max:Recovery = <76% (<144.2)GA = 70-81% (133.0 - 153.9)Long/MLR = 74-84% (140.6 - 159.6)MP = 79-88% (150.1 - 167.2)LT = 82-91% (155.8 - 172.9)VO2 max = 93-95% (176.7 - 180.5)
Thanks for the help. I guess I just ran harder then I had to. Looks like those GA HR runs will be real slow but in 100 degrees I dont know that I have a choice. I did ok with the higher HR Monday so I may stick with it. Thanks again for your help.

Good 5 mile run tonight on the dreadmill. Held 8:30s or a bit faster - HR stayed at 150. No swimming tonight - they closed the pool again (grrr...). I guess tomorrow will be swimming day. Friday off. Saturday race - I may be DFL on the swim and run, but I'm planning on leaving a 16 mile skid mark on the bike course.

I don't know how he does it. Its not a surprise he's the fastest runner in here. He's the most dedicated. Meanwhile I've taken 2 days off.....gotta get through some runs tomorrow, Friday and Saturday. Got a Warrior Dash on Sunday. My first one and have no idea how tough that type of race is. I'll probably be running my long run the day before. I'll let the Warrior Dash be my speed workout?!?!?! Am I crazy? This thread has everything.....shots to the groin, details of guys getting laid, and cows. What else could one want?

A monsoon blew through here and cooled it down to 92 when I headed out the door. I got a late start and finished when it was dark out. Which can be rough out here. We have no street lights so it is all by starlight and moonlight. I did 9 miles. This was supposed to be a Pfitz GA run but I made it a HR run using the new numbers from Ned. It went great. Interestingly enough the temp difference from 100 to 90 and doing it as the sun went down made quite a difference. I kept my avg HR at 154 which translated to avg pace of 12:56. I ended up with negative splits and attribute that to the sun setting.

Monday avg HR was 163 with avg pace at 13:06.

I think if I keep up the HR training and then switch back to pacing when we get nicer temps I should be ok.

PSL- That sucks what you are going through. I still cant cross my left leg over my right and I have to be careful getting out of the car and out of bed. I also cant put my left foot on my right knee to put a shoe on. I had xrays done and hip was fine. I was told it could be a torn labrum but I needed the same test you are getting to confirm it. I declined the test after hearing about it. The treatment did not sound like anything I would do either. I am still able to run though. Hope it works out for you. Have you tried any of the soft tissue release stuff? I figured I would do that before getting the MRI on the labrum deal. I figure if the soft tissue treatment does not work then it pretty much has to be the labrum. No real down side to the soft tissue treatments.

A gorgeous morning! 59 degrees -- 54 degree dewpoint.

SIGN ME UP!

Decided to just do a run and not worry too much about pacing, etc. It was an out and back run that had about 250 feet in elevation change down for the first 2 miles and then miles 3 and 4 had me climbing those 250 feet.

Mile 1 --- 8:38/mile -- 138 HR

Mile 2 --- 7:52/mile -- 143 HR

Mile 3 --- 8:30/mile -- 154 HR

Mile 4 --- 8:20/mile -- 163 HR

Last 0.35 miles --- 7:43/mile -- 154 HR

Such a nice run and it felt good not to be sweating before I started.

Have a great day.

Followed up yesterday's 5mi recovery with a 10mi GA at 4:30 this morning. WTF is wrong with me? These super early runs suck. I was, again, <thisclose> to jumping back in bed. I decided I better get it in now since the day is going to be busy and it might be the only time I get to run. So I bit the bullet and went out. Legs were mush and felt pretty dead from start to finish, but my HR numbers and pacing were great thanks to the cooler temps (69 & 50%). HR avg was lower than I would've liked, but my legs weren't letting me go much faster without really pushing it. I decided I was going at a decent pace and should just keep it on cruise control. Avg HR 142 @ 9:36 pace.

Ned: way to HTFU!

SteelC: nice run, and very jealous about your conditions!

Prosopsis: You will be shocked how easy it will be to run when the weather changes. Keep up the HR training. I have done some soft tissue work with no help. I've gone through PT as well. I'm still using surgery as a last resort, but it's starting to look inevitable. I truly want to get to where I can train hard, and I'm pretty sure I won't get there if I actually do have a labrum torn.

Sounds like a plan!Prosopis - nice job on the pacing and HR! We had a low 60 degree, low humidity morning here in Chicago, and wow, what a difference it makes. I ended up popping a 7 miler (7:40/mile and a 159 HR).

Injuries suck. We need to get our mojo going so we can all avoid them together.

Did 4 miles yesterday, forgot to dry out my shoes from the rain run the day before :(

Ran a 5k today and just missed my first sub 30, finishing at 30:40. I ran my fastest mile to date to start, 9:18. Had I paid closer attn to my timing and pushed it I could have crossed that threshold. Looking forward to doing that on Sat.

Four times today I decided not to do today's run, four times I decided to do the run. I am glad I did it. 4 miles with 1/2 mile intervals with 1/4 mile rests at 10:54. 1 mile warmup at 10:541/2 @ 9:221/2 @ 8:571/2 @ 8:341/2 @ 8:22I felt great, during and afterward. When I was doing the 9:22 half I felt like I could keep it up for a while, so I am going to try to do 2.5 at that pace in the middle of a 4 mile run on Thursday.
I meant to do 1 mile @10:54 for a warmup then 2.5 @9:22. I didn't do it.When I got to a 1/2 mile of warmup I got bored so I started the 9:22 at that point and just decided to go as far as I could. It ended up being my fastest 3 miles in over 3 years, I was able to keep up the 9:22 the whole time. I slowed down to 10 for the last half mile. Honestly I think I pushed it just a bit, but it felt great.

My 5K race is coming up in 2 weeks. I usually run in the morning but had a breakfast meeting this morning which threw me off. So, I ran this evening. Just did a 2.6 mile run through the neighborhood. HR was a 171 average. Time was 23:19 for a 8:50. Trying to build my mileage up slowly. I have been at the 2.6 mile range now for about 2 weeks running 2 to 3 times a week. I am going to add a 4th day next week to my runs and try to get up to 3 miles or so per run. Still trying to slow my pace down.

This thread provides a lot of motivation. I was thinking of skipping the run tonight and then thought no if I skip it i can't post my measly update on mileage. There are some true beasts up in here  Having fun though.

Great work, Darrin. You're really making some strides as a runner. -------------

Had my first really good "quality" workout of the training cycle tonight: 2 miles up, 5 tempo at 6:23/6:20/6:22/6:27/6:29, and 3 down. Considering my stressed-out, sleep-deprived state plus the fact that I've run 77 miles in the last 8 days, I'm definitely happy with the 6:24 average pace on the tempo miles (although I did run out of steam a little bit on the last two).

I want to do 12 miles combined over the next two days before knocking out 18-20 with some MP miles on Sunday. Debating if I want to do the 12 as a 5/7 double so I can have a rest day. Not sure.

Final workout before race Saturday. I've gotten fat and slow (mostly because I haven't swum for snot in the last couple months). 1:05 100, 2:30 200, and a 6:28 500. Boo hiss.

Luckily the swim here is short. The bike is long, and I've been torching myself week after week on the bike, so it should be a good race.

I just five easy miles on tap later today to finish out the week -- nothing exciting. Next week is going to be mess. I've got a few things booked on Mon and Tues but nothing I can't run around as long as I keep the rest of my calendar reasonably clear. Unfortunately, I'm tied up all day on Thursday and Friday, so I may have to experiment with this "running before work" thing that you guys keep talking about. :loco:

Damn that's a hell of a tempo run. That's your 10Kish pace? Great stuff.

Darrin -- great run! Its been fun to watch you get faster and faster each week. Keep it up!

Grue -- Just another fantastic workout. I have trouble "ramping" up my speed on my longer (5+ miles) runs. I do the warmup and then feel like I'm stuck in that speed. Ugh.

My Update --

Another glorious morning. Dare I say a bit chilly? Regardless 57 degrees, dewpoint at 54 -- ran 6.54 miles at a 8:16/mile pace. Average HR was 149.

Long run tomorrow (16-17 miles). I'm already dreading it. Gonna include a bunch of hills as my marathon is a bit hilly.

Sunday will be my Warrior Dash (on tired legs).

Have a great Friday!

Nice workouts again by all.

Had a little easy 3 miler last night...sort of a recovery run after speedwork Wednesday...also some weight work before running. Rest today and 9 bright and early tomorrow on one of Nashville's greenways.

GL on the Warrior Dash Steel...looking forward to doing that one in September.

Great training, guys! Just steady stuff for me. I'll be doing another 5K in two weeks. My daughter wants to see me race before she heads to Sydney for her first year post-college.

Sand, SteelCurtain - hope you race strong!

walnutz - I think you should just run a 4 or even 5 miler some day. Just because. Get over the mental hurdle!

BTW -- while running today, I was thinking about how I consider myself in above average shape. I did 1 mile intervals last weekend and I did two of them at 6:50/ea with a 4 minute break in between. Meanwhile Grue banged out a 10 mile run with miles 3 through 7 to be at about 25-30 seconds/mile faster than I can run one mile. Pretty humbling. And then I realize that Grue drinks more than me and it just gets downright depressing. Keep it up Grue. Just make sure you wait up for me at the finish line! :boxing:

Yeah... not in Cleveland anymore. I'm down in blistering Texas.

Who all is racing this weekend? I am doing my first ever 10K race. It's a trail run with a bunch of hills and stuff. I am hoping for a 1:20, but I don't do a lot of hills or trail so we shall see.

No matter what though, I am setting a PR tomorrow

Then again about February he'll be hating those of us sitting at 40 while he is at -10. Of course, you are in Cleveland, so you'll probably be at -10, too. :P

Good luck! 10k is my favorite running distance.I am racing a short tri tomorrow (600yd swim, 16mile bike, 3 mile run). Thanks for the well wishes, guys. My kids have gotten sick last couple of days and I feel like #### this morning, but hopefully it will clear up by tomorrow. If it doesn't that will just spoil my plan to throw up on the finish line - I'll just spread the vomit around all over the place.

Just thought I'd give one of my few updates per year on here.....Heading off to Colorado (Leadville) on Sunday for camping/road biking/hiking and then the Pikes Peak Ascent on 8/20. I've done the Pikes Peak Marathon 3 times and thought just the Ascent would be cool this year. Hoping to break my best "up" time of 3:46 since I won't have to worry about heading back down....should be about 3:15 - 3:30 to go 13.1 miles from 6,800' to 14,115'....probably good enough for a top 200 out of 1,800.

Also going to hike up two 14ers and bike Independence Pass from Leadville to Aspen the week before. Going to be an awesome/crazy week.

I troll this thread from time to time, keep up the good work fellas.

Good grief. That is on my "wow I want to do that but I'd surely die" list. You are a beast, sir.
Going down is actually way tougher than going up. I always want to kill myself by mile 22 or so. Full marathon time has always been around 6:20 (puts me in the top 150/800....winner finishes in about 3:45.If you guys camp, could always put together a FBG camping/Pikes Peak Ascent/Marathon trip for a few days of beers, hiking, biking, shooting the ####. I always go a week early to get acclimated since I'm from sea level, but even just a few days will help tremendously.

That's freaking beastly dude. 7000+ ft in 13 miles. Enjoy the trip.

Reggie C Silks is back on the streets.

4 days of pain killers and muscle relaxers I decided to get out for a quick one.

2 Miles at probably my 1 mile pace

Mile 1: 8:22

Mile 2: 8:52

Was just testing out the back - it was way too hot to get out there. I look forward to a long one and a slow one tomorrow morning.

Back held up ok - no pain, no soreness, no locking up. The real test will be overnight though

I just threw up a little bit thinking about it

How do you guys measure length/time? GPS watches? I just went to the Brooks shop and bought a pair of shoes, and figure I should keep track of these things.
