Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

1:54:17 official chip time.

So only a second difference between it and my Garmin.

One interesting thing...its an out and back course...as the faster runners are coming back towards me, there is a little boy (though, I think several of us thought it was a girl...very long hair but looking at the times no way it was a 13 year old girl...) 9 year old. Guy behind me says "that's discouraging". We all had a laugh...

Passed the kid at about mile 11. Sad that in my head I give myself a fist pump for that. But I did give the kid 5 and tell him he was awesome...(just not as awesome as me...give him 28 more years on his body and see how he does :) )

My splits went

1 - 8:34.99

2 - 8:41.25

3 - 8:46.37

4 - 8:42.71

5 - 8:42.63

6 - 8:44.93

7 - 8:41.91

8 - 8:35.63

9 - 8:37.12

10- 8:39.47

11- 8:35.50

12- 8:34.9

13- 8:27.59

Geez...unless you have the super duper military gps, you may have run the same pace for most of the race. That's amazing. Congrats on the pr and a very solid time.
His GPS is good to hundredths of a second, it must be super duper. ;-) Congrats Shonuff! You shattered your PR, always a nice thing.---

On my end, a nice 41 mile ride - about 3,500 ft. of cimbing. Definitely feeling the effects of way too little bike volume. Some parts of that ride were just brutal trying to hang on. This will improve soon as my next thing after the swim is a 40k TT.

Very happy camper right now.1:54:18 unofficial...Its an interesting race, I certainly would not recommend it for anyone wanting to see a great part of Nashville or anything exciting.Starts at the Titans stadium and heads out to Shelby Park and the greenway. its a pretty boring run. But, I would recommend it for anyone close by that wants a PR. Its extremely flat.Weather today was pretty darn good. I went with LS but could have easily gone SS. Sunny, no wind. After coming out of the gate with an 8:35 mile...I settled in to the miles around 8:41-8:45ish. Just cruised there for about 7 miles. Felt great. At that point decided to pick it up a bit and started in on some miles around 8:35 or so...til the last mile I pulled in an 8:27 and then the last .23 was quite a bit quicker coming down the ramp into LP field and around on the grass. Nice looking up and seeing yourself on the jumbotron as you come up on the finish line to be greated by a Titans' cheerleader with the medal.Overall...a great race day and Im very excited about...but not sure I will run this one for a little while til I want to improve a PR pretty big.
 Very cool. I would love to do one of these races that end in a sports arena. Congrats on the new time. It is very impressive.

Always good to start the year with a new year's PR. Way to SandTM the start!
LOL, now that you mention it that was kind of lame. That was my fastest effort in 12 plus months. How's this Tri-man...Today's the furtherest I've ever run at this age.

Thanks...not sure what is up but my right foot is extremely sore today.

Right near the joint of my little toe and on back just a bit.

Does not appear swollen...just very sore when I walk.

BTW...Cheeseburger, Onion Rings, and Beer last night to celebrate was freaking awesome. Over the last year its been very rare that I let myself eat like that as I try to eat better...it was fantastic.

Another interesting week in this weird training cycle. The inconsistency is driving me crazy, but judging by how the week finished I think some good things are happening.

Tue - 5mi recovery. Felt sluggish, but OK. Didn't have any pep in my step. 9:59/145

Wed - 10mi with 6LT. I was really looking forward to this run so I could open things up a bit. It ended up being a pretty bleh run. I try to keep perspective on this stuff and remember where I came from, but I know I have more than this in me. The 6LT miles were at 8:07/175 average. I fell apart on the last LT mile at 8:24. Disappointing, but what can you do?

Fri - 10mi GA. Given the crummy LT run, I had no expectations today. Something friggin' clicked. What? I don't know. I was on a high all afternoon after this run. Totally effortless run. Things were flowing so easily. I still don't understand WTH happened. The HR was so linear, I thought my HR monitor may have been acting up. Ended up at 8:49/153. That's a good 30 seconds faster than my past few GA runs at the same HR. Crazy.

Sat - 5mi recovery. Legs were super fresh. I had a hell of a time fighting back the urge to just go. 9:41/138 Can this be real?

Sun - First ever 'brick' (11mi then 5mi). I wanted to accomplish 2 things with this run. 1-Get used to the feeling of running multiple runs on little rest. 2-The 2nd run needs to be faster than the first since the triple crown is being raced in decending order. In the back of my mind, I was worried about this run and was wondering if the past few days were just fluke runs.

Well, I don't think they were flukes. I targeted a brisk pace for the first run. Somewhere between a MLR and a GA. Just keep the HR at or below 150 and I'll be good. Started out first 5 was 9:25-9:30s at 150 HR. On the way back, I got locked in at the 150 HR and just started flowin'. Last 5 were all 9:08 and below at the same HR. Simply unreal how things changed over night. The average for the run was 9:17/149. That 149 number blows my mind.

I got home and paced around the yard with the dogs. Took a Gu and some gatorade and just tried to stay loose. I wanted to wait 20 minutes to simulate the gap between the HM and the 10K races. I wanted to push the 2nd run (5mi) a little bit more to help simulate the faster 10K race. My legs were resistant at first, but they settled down around 0.5 in. I decided to add some hills to this run and hit some decent ones at miles 3 and 4. They took quite a bit out of me. Ended the run at 8:51/159.

I'm absolutely floored at how this week finished up. I don't know what happened, but I'm suddenly right back in the marathon fitness groove. I'm hoping its a sign of things to come. Weekly mileage = 46

Very nice Ned...I guess not always running on HR...I have yet to be able to control mine that way.

That and my HRs are a bit higher than yours as it is.

But after some tougher miles during tempos...its is very hard for me to bring mine down as well as some of you seem to do.

I have really not gotten into training by HR but track it now to have some extra data to analyze and see when I have struggled and what factors may have led to that. I think that is one of the things that I know that hills really get me big time (in HR and how I feel) and a huge reason the half yesterday went so well was because of how flat it was and how much work I have gotten in on hills during runs around the neighborhood and the greenway I train on being pretty hilly.

Congrats on a great week.

Great week, Ned!

Windy as hell when I woke up yesterday (gusting 30+ mph), so I decided to skip the 5K and get a little extra sleep instead. Waited until about noon and then headed out for my 20-miler. Decided to do an out-and-back route, and the first half was almost entirely into the wind. It was brutal. Stopped and bought a bottle of Gatorade at the turnaround and headed back with the wind. What a difference. Averaged 8:04 on the way out and 7:41 on the way back. Good run.

Week in review:

M - 10 miles at 8:11/mi

T - 8 progression at 7:14/mi

W - 8 at 8:20/mi (am); 5 at 8:16/mi (pm)

T - rest

F - 5 at 7:45/mi

S - 20 at 7:53/mi

S - 5 rec at 8:47/mi

Total - 61 miles

This coming week will be a little easier for me, since I'm racing a half marathon in St. Paul on Saturday morning. Weather permitting, I'll be shooting for a PR (sub-1:27:01).

Is this to check for defenders coming up behind you before you cross the goalline? ;) Nice work on the PR

You've caught some bad luck on your 20s. Isn't that the second one you've had to run in the wind? :XHow are you feeling compared to the 2:59 training cycle?

You're already wearing the thing. Might as well give training by HR a try. It's the most accurate way to go, IMO.

I probably will this summer/fall when in marathon training.

You have to let me in on this
Sand typically goes out fast to start races...also is a huge proponent of starting fast and holding on for dear life in a 5k (actually a very sound strategy).

Sand's a man on the cutting edge. May some hay while you're fresh and bank some time towards your goal.Actually I see no harm in knocking out a fast mile to start off a longer event. Usually the crowd in the first mile prevents this.

oh okay, I could've guessed that. I thought he had some epic story of starting fast and then hitting a wall.I can see the strategy being advantageous

No epic meltdowns yet (the final leg of the Bourbon Chase notwithstanding). In fact, for my HM PR I started off in 6:58 and went on to have a spectacular race. These things usually aren't intentional (that one wasn't). I just have a tendency to jump out of the gate. For 5ks there was a study that showed starting fast was definitely the way to go. It certainly is the most painful way to go, though. Probably not for races like BnBs 40 miler but he did me proud in any case.

You've caught some bad luck on your 20s. Isn't that the second one you've had to run in the wind? :XHow are you feeling compared to the 2:59 training cycle?
I honestly don't remember much about my last 20-miler, other than it sucked. Oh, well. :shrug:I'm feeling OK. A lot of other #### going on in my life that's keeping me from really getting dialed in mentally, but otherwise the training has been decent. I'm doing less mileage this cycle and not as much quality, but I've done a couple of solid tempo runs, and I PR'd the 5-miler last weekend, so I guess we'll see. I'm racing a half on Saturday, so that will give me a good indicator of where I'm at.

I did a 10K training run today in 56:23 that would have been an easy pace if it wasn't for the fact that it was 78 degrees with insane humidity and I had a BAC of at least .05 at the start of the run.

We kinda skipped the whole "#####ing about the cold" this year, but I expect we'll be #####ing about the heat soon enough!

I was thinking the same thing to myself this morning when I was looking at the three Nike cold gear shirts I spent $40 apiece on that I wore once each this "winter."

tri-man - You do some ladder workouts at the track, don't you? What's your fave(s)?
Actually, no, I haven't been. I'll tend to do repeat sets of 1/4s or 1/2s. But with a continual dose of track work this season, I really should work in some ladders as well. In past years, I just couldn't get enough consistency about being on the track. Now, I'm targeting twice a week. So ...I'm open to suggestions!

Sho_nuff and BNB - Great races. Sho, I am looking for that kind of consistency this Sunday for my half.

Ned - Nice week. Sounds like you are getting back in the swing of things. That race you have sounds really interesting.

Gru - good solid week.

Sand - good ride. How you guys can jump on a bike for that long is beyond me, but I am sure the same could be said for runners who go out and run 20+ miles in one sitting.

----------------

I had and interesting finish to my week and a pretty good surprise as well. On Friday, I had mentioned that I got in my 11 miler and was going to run on Saturday to get my 15 miler in and done with so I could have some fun on Saturday night.

After the 11 on friday, I was not sure what to expect on Saturday. It was a little rough starting out, but I loosened up and got moving after about 4 miles. Things went really well and I threw in a few faster miles just to test the legs. All things considered, I am happy with my average of 8:39 overall. After I got home, I was totalling my mileage for the week and realized that I got in 70 miles last week, which is something I have only ever done once before. My legs felt great too, which is really good. I was pumped because I thought I would get in back to back 70 mile weeks, but realized that this weekend I have my half marathon and will taper some towards the end of the week.

For the half, I am going to try and do a test run for the marathon and see how that goes. I am going to try and run close to even splits of 7:45 and see how that goes. I say a test because with training sort of being all over the place this cycle, it should give me a good idea of where I am at and let me know if I need to adjust for the full come May.

Have a great day all.

Headed to the doc today.

Another day waking up with it hard to walk on my right foot.

It "loosens" up and becomes bearable and not too bad of a limp...but also noticed a little protrusion up near the joint of the little toe.

Could be nothing but calcium deposit but with the soreness and knowing I was a little sore on that foot in the week or two leading up...want to be careful before starting to run again later this week to get ready for the next half at the end of April.

That and its reminding me of the pain I had in my foot in high school that I had in the weeks leading up a nice little break in the middle bone in my other foot.

Lots of good stuff in here.

I got in a short 2.5 miles Saturday and was still slightly sore from the marathon last week. My legs we're begging for another days rest so I listened. You can tell the running addiction has set in...I was slightly depressed yesterday no feeling up to going out.

Damn time change. I got my bike all prepped and ready for a Monday morning ride and completely forgot it would be pitch black outside until 6:45 here.

Lots of racing coming up next weekend. Hang 10 going the distance at Shamrock, half marathons for PMB and me, and Ned banging out a 5K.

:goodposting: We're shifting the relay team tune up 5K back a week to support a new state park opening up the following weekend. I need to update the schedule. I'm anxious to see what I got since I haven't raced a 5K since last summer. :excited:

training for 10k on 3/25

WED

3mi

Decided to run out here at work, felt very sluggish but my time was better than normal

Thursday

was so nice, took half day to go run, and spend afternoon with kids/wife

I had a 3mi (2 tempo)

Been using my phone as my tracker, and ended up doing a half mile on pause, was annoyed, then started to get to tempo and about a mile i just hit a wall, was warmest day I ever ran in, heat seemed to effect me. ended up doing last .75mile at a slower pace than normal for tempo.

My legs felt so sluggish and tired, more than I ever did running thus far.

Sat

It all changed...I bought a garmin 305 from some dude on craigslist.

I love that thing now. I use to walk around the house.

Picked it up, and did 3miles near my moms house as she was coming up for the weekend. Was really cool to be able to easily check my gps for times/paces. My phone was a PITA.

I did 3mi in 27:58

Sun

5mi/51:33

5mi is the longest I have ever done.

I was running with my cousin, I seem to be a bit faster than him, I just kept a slow easy pace and din't bother to push any.

Was a good week, felt a bit down with the mid week sluggish runs, but the weekend felt great. I credit my new watch!

If you haven't already, set up your Garmin to autolap every mile. That way you'll be able to look back afterwards and see your mile-by-mile splits without having to hit the "lap" button every time.

awesome. thanks for the tip

Is it possible that the track I run on is off? Every time I try to calibrate my foot pod, it says one time around the track is .28 instead of .25

Am I wrong in thinking that one time around is .25. Shuked

Are you running on the inside lane?I don't trust the footpods. Too many variables with how you can lengthen/shorten your strides.

Well...good news that the X-rays are negative...but no real reason for the pain right now.So the bad news of rest rest rest and ibuprofen.Rest is not an issue as I was planning on taking til at least Wednesday. But I now will probably take until at least the weekend before doing even a slow run.May hit the bike a few times this week though.

If your insurance is good, perhaps PT would be a good idea. They can help break up scar tissue and perhaps massage the area. Other ideas would be swimming or just soaking the foot.

Agreed. Running the turns on the tracks will shorten the striding a bit, I believe, and that could make it seem like you're taking more strides = more distance. Trust that the track is accurate.sho nuff - hopefully the rest will take care of things.

comfortably numb - sounds like some good running! I'm a big fan of the GPS after getting one over a year ago.

yeah, running on inside lane.

That is frustrating. Looks like some of my running has been untrue to what I thought it was.

I got the footpod because it allowed me to run inside without worrying about GPS. Now I am :hot:

Oh well, Ill just run a little bit more to account for it. The sad thing is that when I originally got it, it was perfectly calibrated (according to my car speedometer)

Thanks guys

Anyone ever give the Newton shoes a try? They had a big article on them in the latest RW. I'm thinking about giving them a try as I'm a very heavy midfoot striker. The beefed up tread under the midfoot looks like a great idea.

I've never heard a mention of them here. I was planning on giving them a serious look next time I'm in the market. After seeing some race photos I'm a pretty heavy heel striker. The RW article seems like Newtons encourages the mid foot strike.

That brings me to another question, is it necessarily a bad thing to be a heel striker?

ETA: Pics of my heel strike

not trying to hi-jack the newton discussion.
