For the life of me I've never figured out why people do this.
Why people wear it or why they dont?

I dont wear the race shirt for the race on race day but only because guys in this thread said it was not cool. I certainly see lots of people wearing them  but I am striving to be gruelike so I wont. I am pretty sure it was Grue who said it was not cool.

Why they wear it. It's just odd. Especially when you get it on race day and then go back to your car and change shirts.

I wore the shirt of my first marathon for my first marathon. I thought, "Hmm, maybe I'm better off wearing this first and only tech shirt I own instead of an old cotton T-shirt."

I don't really have anything against doing this but I no longer do it personally.

I think I read about not wearing it in Marathoning for Mortals. For me it is more of a superstitious thing akin to NHL Hockey players not even wanting to be in the same room as the Stanley Cup until they win one. I haven't run the race associated with the shirt and I don't want to jinx the race by wearing it. I try not to touch the shirt or any of the other race swag until the race is over :loco: I know.

Being new to this whole thing I just did whatever said and that was it wasn't cool to wear the race T for the race so I never have. Now I'm more like 2Young, I feel like it would jynx the run if I did it

Yea, pretty darn sure it isn't THAT

Unless I came unprepared or the shirt they gave out was better than what I had (like in Jux's Marathon), I agree that wearing the race shirt in the race is a Goober move.

I must confess I'm still curious about which of you race in singlets and short shorts.
Not me. I wear baggy 8"-9" running shorts and shirts with sleeves of some kind. People would laugh at me if I wore 3" shorts and a singlet, including (especially) my wife.

I had a good interval session today. My colleague who recently ran a 1:13 half -- who I hate, obviously -- recommended a workout of three sets of 800, 600, and 200 with a half lap of recovery between each interval and a lap of recovery between each set. They went like this:

800: 3:28

600: 2:38

200: 0:49

800: 3:26

600: 2:36

200: 0:48

800: 3:27

600: 2:38

200: 0:49

I was worn out by the end of that, but my Summer of Speed goal is to run a 5K at a sub-7:00 pace, which would cut my PR from 21:58 to 21:42, so I was encouraged that I could run that pace in a training session.

I finally got around to buying a new pair of shoes yesterday, Mizuno Wave Elixirs. I have been racing in my marathon trainers. Tested the new ones out at the track tonight with a 2:39 half mile. Certainly the fastest I've ever run that distance. I started to run another half mile but Juxted it. I didn't want to tire myself out too much with only a day and one half until race time. I really like the way the new shoes feel. Hopefully they actually make me faster and it's not just in my head.

If they're lighter, they'll make you faster. As to the pre-race training, I'm not as smart as you - 8 miles yesterday, with 6.5 @ 7:32/mile, then 6 miles today with three one-mile repeats on the track (6:47, 6:45, 6:33). Planning on another 6-8 tomorrow, then the 5K on Saturday. Sunday's long run is going to feel just peachy.

Same here. My wife already refers to my heart rate strap as a "bra" and my calf sleeves as a "pantyhose". No way I'm giving her more ammo

Yeah I don't do the real short shorts. I go with 5 inch shorts for racing. For regular runs I will wear whatever, including some basketball shorts. I try to wear the racing or shorter regular shorts for faster stuff. I wear singlets to race but for training I feel like I'm a dinosaur because I still run in mostly basic cotton tshirts and a couple tech shirts I got free from races. Or homemade cutup sleeveless shirts. I just never feel like spending the money on the fancy stuff. May be one of the reasons I sweat so much, though.

Dude.... Cotton is the fn devil. I'm in singlets from May - October and wear 7" running shorts year round. Once you go with the light stuff, you can't go back.

Nice workout. I did a lot of these types of workouts last summer. To mix things up once in awhile, try doing this and making it a progression workout - meaning each set is faster than the last. Especially in this Summer of Speed since it simulates trying to finish fast.

:goodposting: trainers will feel like bricks after wearing lighter shoes. I wear flats for a 5K and love them. Oh, and You're a maniac with that training!

I know I know. I suspect my first NC summer will be the motivation I need to make the switch.

If I didn't have free tech shirts from races I wouldn't have any...

On my end, a nice 25 mile ride. Super humid here - sweated my tail off. Most of the ride was fairly easy - did hit one section pretty hard and set a new one minute power PR at 525w. Held 600 for 45s, but the climb ended or I would have easily have crushed this some more.

Race shirts...though, I do find quite a lot on clearance right at the end of the summer...or at places like Ross or TJ Maxx.

Kohls usually runs their fila stuff cheap and I actually like a lot of their stuff.

I think most of mine came from gift cards and stuff though...as I just don't have a need for a lot of other stuff...I did buy a bunch of stuff to run in.

Hell, I wear mostly tech like fabric Tshirts even when Im not running (even most of my golf shirts are some sort of dri fit stuff). Hate cotton for most things.

When you step outside and begin to sweat you will appreciate tech stuff. I was the same way, cotton everything. Felt like you're dragging around an extra 10lb weight. We're just starting to warm up, wait until July/August.

So yeah...possible 5k this Sunday. I say possible because my wife is due with our second child in...oh..about 7 days. So it's a bit difficult to fully to commit to anything at this point but I am registered.

Here's the real kicker though...race time is at 2:30PM. Forecast is calling for 90's that day! Also, it's a flat course but only 5% of this race is on paved roads. I really have no idea what a decent time is going to be. I'd love to break 20 min but the conditions aren't looking optimal.
Update:So yeah, no race for me this past Sunday but I do have a new 8lb baby girl in the house! Baby was born @ noon on race day.

So the summer of speed is going to be a bit complicated for me going forward. I've got a few races planned for the end of summer but nothing for the near future. I feel fast and healthy...I'm ready to race but there's obviously issues about what I can commit to at this point. Hopefully I can squeeze in a 5k here soon. :fingerscrossed:

Congrats Hang10! Awesome news! Is she your first? I have two little girls just over 3 and 18 months. It is definitely challenging trying to train and race with little ones. Good luck

i think he said he's got another one, but yes training is tough with multiple kids. I have a 20mo old and a 4mo old.

Congrats...hard enough some times to run with a 5 year old and 8 year old (who I do get to run with me sometimes)...

Once the little one is old enough...get you a running stroller I guess (missed that with my kids as I was not running much when they were really ilttle)

Congrats, Hang. Be sure to remind Mrs. Hang that you sacrificed a 5K to drive her to the hospital to give birth to your daughter, so she owes you one.

Thanks, fellas. Yeah, this is our second. Already have a 5 year old daughter...now we have a 5 day old too! The summer of no sleep has begun!

And add in the "I'm running so I can live longer to be with you and the kids, honey" for good measure. Congrats Hang 10!!

congrats Hang 10 ! The summer of no sleep sounds appropriate. I have 3 boys (7yr old and 5 yr old twins).

Finished my race yesterday (3.5mi) in 24:40 / 7:03. Definitely slower than I hoped for and a little bummed as I feel I left too much in the tank but overall it was a fun event and I'll take a 1 min improvement over last year. I'll write up something more detailed later.

Wow, lots of new stuff in here. Congrats Hang. Awesome!

I wear tank tops but longish shorts for races. I have had the bloody nipple thing a couple of times, even with tech shirts. Painful as hell, plus it looks like you have gunshot wounds to the chest. Ouch.

Day off today. Tomorrow looks cool (for us), low 71 or so. I might extend my long run if it feels ok and should end up in the mid 50s for mpw.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! As a father of two girls spaced 5 years apart I wish you good luck. Mine are oil & water. Pretty sure the older one would sell the younger to science if she had the opportunity or vice versa for that matter.Edit to add - nice job Sean! A minute off your time is pretty ####### impressive, don't downplay that.

Nice improvement!

Hang10, I'd seen your news on FB, but congrats again! I know how tough it is for all of you with young kids ...but it's great when they're old enough to appreciate it (or join in, ala 2Young and BnB).
