Ran a 10k in June (4 Viewers)

Just finished my first "faster" run since NYCM. Six-mile progression run in 7:56, 7:31, 7:27, 7:18, 7:14, and 6:49. Didn't really plan on running that fast, but it felt good, so I just kinda went with it.

Heading out for a few barley pops with a buddy. Have a good night, everybody!

Wow - I think I could hit those times if I was on rollerblades...Almost (intentionally) slept through the alarm today. Didn't have a specific goal for the run (which may have been the problem to begin with) and started bargaining with myself on it. Don't know what turned it around, but ended up on the street and got 4 miles in. I'm taking tomorrow off until I try to hit 13 on Sunday. I'll step back to 10 next weekend and 10 on Thanksgiving in advance of Vegas on the 6th. Looking forward to the next couple of months and getting some baseline times in the books.

Still a bit under the weather so did a nice easy 1.5 today just to get back out there. It's funny to say that, "a nice easy 1.5" last year I would have had to stop 2-3 times. Now I'm looking at 5ks & 10ks like warm ups to longer races.

Watch out, next you will be running ultra's with those other wackos. :banned:

RW online has a video from late 2008 on Ecco Biom.

It's made of Yak leather.
This reminded me, a kid who ran last week's trail race wore a pair of Vibram 5-Finger BareFoot Trail Runners I asked if the rocks and tree root punished his feet in these and he said they give more support and protection than his regular trail runners. Not so sure I'll be getting these any time soon.
Those just look wrong. 8.17 this morning in 1:33:37, and for a change I actually ran the whole thing. Instead of running the 8 mile course I have done before I just did my 4 mile run twice. Run link.

The first loop I kept my pace at around 12 m/m, after that I just let my self run at whatever speed was comfortable. I ended uo with real nice negative splits and each split after mile 4 was faster than the last. If I can do 8 miles at that speed on Thanksgiving it will give me 29 minutes to struggle home the last 2 miles to beat 2 hours. I think I can do that.

Any racers today?

That sounds naughty. Especially when I bring to mind #54 and 114. :( Strong hour on the bike last night (indoors for the winter, now), and a great hour in the pool this morning. Run tomorrow. I'll probably stay with this 'lighter' schedule through November of just one good workout per week on each of the disciplines while keeping up the yoga, dumbells, and a weekly set of lunges and squats.

What up, guys?? Went out for 8 miles this morning. Wore my Garmin, but I didn't look at my time/pace until I was done. I would've guessed that I was doing 8-minute miles, give or take, but I ended up finishing in 60 minutes and change, so I was actually averaging closer to 7:30's. Who knew??

Taking the day off tomorrow, as I'm still trying to balance recovery from Chicago/New York and base-building for my Boston training cycle that'll start mid-December. Might be going to the Packers/Cowboys game, but I really don't know why I'd waste my time. DeMarcus Ware is a bad, bad man.....

Got very lucky this week. I am constantly watching eBay for tri-bikes that would fit me (not an easy thing at my height), but I've been reluctant to bid as its a darn big purchase to not see before I buy. So, I found bike listed on eBay that looked like it would fit me and noticed that the guy is 30-minutes from where I live and found he also had the bike listed on Craig's List. After a quick email, I found out he is my exact height and inseam and was pro fit to the bike. I went and saw the bike Tuesday and bought it on the spot after working him down a bit and got him to toss in a couple of extras. Truthfully, I probably could have worked him down a bit more, but I did some research and I've raced against him before and likely will again.

Today I took this out for its first spin, doing 25 miles. My neck is a bit sore from being cranked down in aero, but I think I'll get used to this quick. Best part of the ride, a garbage truck pulled out just before I made a turn. I tucked up behind it as was able to maintain 28 to 30 MPH over about a 1.5 mile stretch drafting it with ease. I love the thing already and think it'll make for a more successful 1/2 IM next year.

Special thanks to PSL for being my technical advisor on the purchase (and for the nudge to pull the trigger)!

Ran a local 5K this morning - only my second organized race. Had a great time, had really nice weather - mid 50s - and ran a good race. I managed to shave a minute off of my time from late September. I finished in 23:36 (actual; 23:45 clock), which was somewhere around 7:36 m/m. I managed to get in with a guy at the 1.5 turnaround and pace off of him for the final half of the race. It was probably a little faster than I would have otherwise run, so it was a nice challenge and pushed me out of my comfort zone. All in all, I was pleased with the run.

Even better was my kids participating in the 1K. Both of them ran nearly the entire loop around the lake and were thrilled to get their medal. It was neat to see them beaming as they ran toward the big crowd at the finish line cheering for them.

I hit the pavement today for the first time in two weeks. It felt good. I did 3.37 miles at 10 min mile. It was in the 60s here today and lots of clouds which is unusual for here. Start of my run I was headed into the wind and that added something to it. Really beautiful out with several rain cells around that I could see in the distance. At about the half way point one of those cells hit me and I was running through a pretty good rain. Some stinging as the rain hit me but it felt great. As I headed back to home I saw the most brilliant rainbow I have ever seen and guess where it looked like it ended? Yup my house!! It was very very very cool. I am a pretty religious fellah and I saw this as a sign. A good sign.

I am thinking of signing up for a turkey trot on Thanksgiving. It is a 5k but it sounds almost like an obstacle course? Mentions water jumps and hurtleing over hay bales?

Sounds like fun.

Great day for you and the family!!! Congrats

I am about to keel over tonight. Spent all day cutting a new MTB trail out at the local park. Eight hours of raking, digging, and moving rocks. Then (like a true addict) I went on a trail run until there was barely any light to see by. Thus, it was slow (5.2 miles in 48 minutes), but it was very steep - 700 feet of climbing. Great workout.

That's great. I always found I ran faster when the weather was cooler. Do you remember what the temp was in September?

5.24 this morning. Went out for a nice easy run after yesterdays long run and ended up doing it an 11:05 m/m average. I decided that I was just going to run at whatever pace was comfortable. I really like running in our new neighborhood, nice square-ish blocks, and easy to add mileage just by making a few turns. The only real problem is that most of the streets around here are dirt/sand and some of it can get deep. I got in 21.44 miles this week, first time over 21 in a year.

My daughter has been begging me to find her a sprint triathlon next year that she can shoot for as her first (and she is upset it won't be where she did her relay this fall as I have a date with Tri-Man and a few other old men to run a 100K dirt relay the same day). While searching for event I found a few I thought I'd share here.

First, Tri-Man, here is an Illinois 1/2 IM in October next year that might be a perfect one to grab that AG podium goal. (you'll have to ride an extra 7 miles to get it though). A small FWIW about 3Disciplines, they put on a decent event (and always have the best venues) but give out lousy medals and swag.

The Cleveland Triathlon is my 1st choice so far for my daughter's 1st Sprint. They have a "super" sprint that is a 300 meter swim, 8-mile bike & a 1.5-mile run. Only thing that worries me a bit is that she would have to jump off a break wall to start the swim. I told her I'd be willing to find her on the swim or bike and hang with her (depending on how the waves are done). She told me outright that she wants to do this herself and basically told me she wants me doing a different event so I wont even try to find her until she finishes. For those Midwesterners gunning for you 1st tri (Dexter & Wrath) this may a good 1st option. It sound very cool to finish at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Shermanator in West Michigan may be another option for my daughter. It has a slightly shorter swim (500 yards) and a shorter bike too. She'd rather have a longer bike and a shorter run as she is best on the bike.

My daughter has also been on me to find a place where she can swim. One of the local HS has an open swim this afternoon so I'll be missing a few hours of football Sunday to  , which is a good thing. I had wanted to run, but my ankle is still sore from rolling it last Sunday and I'll miss my swim Wednesday as I'll be at the Wings/Stars Game with my Dad.

Hey Sand, have you tried (or do you have) a Sport Count Swim Timer? It drives me :goodposting: when I lose track of lap count and tend to compartmentalize my swims in 20 length blocks (20/40/60/80) to help keep count. I'd like to start swimming in time blocks versus distance as a change of pace and it'd be nice to turn my brain off from counting and just click at the wall. It also looks a though the $29.00 one does some analysis. I assume you'd put it the length distance in yards or meters.

Swam 1,000 easy yards today while my daughter swam 500. My wife is going to run an easy 3 miles before dark and I am debating tagging along to see how my ankle feels.

Nope, haven't tried that. I tend to be able to keep track of laps pretty well - I don't typically do long legs (400 is typically the longest). If you do try it, let me know how you like it.I spent another day cutting in a MTB trail. We managed to cut in 1.5 miles of track over really rough, steep terrain. Very, very rocky - a lot of time was spent moving rocks around. The section we cut in used to be a rock quarry. I rode it and only had to walk a few sections and didn't fall until I hit some loose dirt in a couple turns (no biggie - to be expected). It was a productive weekend.

Came home and ran 5 miles until my legs told me to stop. So this weekend I managed 12 hours of hard manual labor, a 30 minute bike ride, and 10 miles of running. My body doesn't have any more in it. My ### is growing roots as we speak.

thanks for the post I plan to start swimming twice a week and was thinking about getting one of these.

I got a good long run in this afternoon. It was my first long run since my marathon where I pushed myself. (other than my halloween half) I ended up running 8.25 miles in 70 minutes. I was happy. It is very hilly where I live and the first 2 miles will really take your legs out from you, so I was very happy with this effort. The last 3 miles where tough, but without a garmin or any kind of watch I knew I just had to keep running hard if I wanted to finish under 9 minute miles. I was closer to 8:30s.

hey guys. Getting back to work after the vacation. Man when in the Caribbean, it is hard not to take the "No Worries" philosophy and just let everything go. Overall, the family had a great trip. I gained a little weight, but did manage to hit the gym 3 times and run about 15 miles while down there. It was hard to do, but knew that I would be better off doing it in the long run. Not much else to report as I am excited to get back into the swing of things and set my specific goals for the winter. So far, my goals are as follows:

1. Get faster

2. Work on my core strength

3. Have some more fun with more races and events.

Sounds like a lot of pretty good racing went on while I was away. Congrats to all and keep rocking those socks. I am not sure that I can wear those but they are definitely peaking my interest. Not sure the wife would own me if I started wearing them, but I she has gotten over the fact that she is married to the idiot running in the snow, ice and below zero weather in the past.

Hey guys, I work with a guy that used to weigh 250+and started training for an IM, quintondiets.com. I am talking to him this morning and he was showing me his brother's blog. He has one arm and recently participated at Kona, and is currently training for a crazy ultraman IM and he won an EPSY last year. So if you need any inspiration for getting out there, here it is.

Upped the long run over the weekend from 11 last week to 13.1 yesterday. Decided to go ahead and do the full distance I'll be racing if for no other reason than to gain the confidence that I could do it. Went out with the goal of running it at 10 m/m pace and came in at 9:58. That's encouraging for me because my pattern after setting a new distance standard has been to increase my speed when I run it again.

I'm curious about your guys opinions on this: I ran the 13 yesterday 3 weeks before the Vegas 1/2. I have a 10 miler on Turkey day which is right in the middle of the three weeks. I'm curious what you guys would recommend for training runs between now and Vegas. My thought was to keep training this week as normal. 4 days this week with 2 six milers and 2 four milers (the 4 milers I run sub 9, the 6 milers I run about 9:10-9:20). Follow that up next weekend with a long run of 11. Then take Monday and Wed off next and just run an easy 3 miles on Tuesday before the Turkey race.

Between the Turkey race and LV, not run over 6 or so and go every other day. Thoughts?

Did an 8 mile training run at 8:14 pace on this bad boy yesterday morning:

Great bridge run

Probably the fastest hill training run I've ever done. Maybe it was the fact that I've fallen in love with Charleston.

How much are you willing to pay for a photo of yourself during an event? How about a digital copy?

I'd like a photo of myself a photographer took during Iceman, but he's charging $7.50 for a digital copy. To me that seems like way too much. I understand everyone is entitled to a profit, but $7.50 for a digital copy of a photo? The guy sits there points and click. it's all digital now. All he has to do is upload to his computer change the file to match the bib number and make money.

To me this service is worth $0.99

It comes down to how much it means to you, not so much what you think photographer's effort its worth. My wife and I have some amazing post race shots together that we've paid for that I am very glad we paid the money for, even if they were over priced. We have a very cool way of displaying our race medals, IMO. We've taken inexpensive 4 picture frames and I've mounted cheap, small drawer pulls below the photos to hang the medals on and each kid has their own for their race photos and medals too. We rotate them out with certain races and I'd say we paid for 1/2 and the other 1/2 we took ourselves. If the photo will remind you of good times &/or serve as motivation to crush your time next year, is $7.50 really all that much?

$7.50 is a lot when you're looking to buy 10+ photos.

No disagreement here, but would you really want 10 or just the best single photo? I've seen photo CDs for like $39.99 that include all race photos. I did a tri earlier this year where they caught me around 25 times and I thought the CD was still only $39.99. I didn't buy a single photo from this event. It just depends on what memory you want captured. Unless you want to truck a family member out in the middle of no where to take a shot of you, you are kind of at their mercy.

I was going to buy a few of my friends too. It just amazing to me what people will charge for something.

Oh I know how to get the photo's if I want them trust me. But I also believe in paying for a service provided. I just don't feel like being raped in the process.

 Maybe I will do it in a speedo.

My legs and especially my quads are killing me. Very very sore. The 3.37 I did Saturday was my first real run in 2 wks. Surprised I was this sore today. I went to the gym and did 6 miles on the elyptical burning 777 calories.

Pool PB for me tonight. I had a crap day at work and really needed to blow off some steam. I started out thinking I'd do 1,000 yards and take a break, then it became 1,500, then the 1/2 IM distance, the 2,500 and finally did 3,000 straight. I didn't time it, but it was after 8:00 when I got in and it was about 2 minutes to 9:00 when I finished, so I averaged sub 10-minute 500s over the 3,000 yards :football: :excited: I've done over 3,000 in a single session, but have not done more than 2,250 straight.

Now for more crap, if Baltimore's kicker scores 5 points or less (and it is looking that way), then MJD will have cost me a win and a position alone atop my division in one league by taking a ####### knee yesterday

Yeah, everybody keeps talking about it was such a smart, unselfish play by MJD, but I think it was stupid. Something gets effed up on the FG attempt, and you lose the game. Like Tom Jackson said at halftime tonight, take the points when you can get them.

Off to Monterey for a couple days ...speaking at a conference, then chillin' on the coast for an extra day and catching a run or two. Duck, thought about whether I could sneak up your way to say "hey," but the trip will be too quick, I believe.

did 5 miles last night at a pretty good pace. Somehow managed to do a out and back from my house with 15 - 20 mph winds in my face both ways...not sure what was going on, but made it back anyway. Hoping I can get back out there tonight, but it is supposed to be raining. I will try if it id light rains. I am a little sore today, but also did a heavy core workout last night so double sore today with legs and mid section tired.

Anyone do any good core workouts they are willing to share with everyone?

This is a large problem for people who run extremely fast. Gruecd is always running into the wind, as he is traveling faster than them. I have the same problem in my car, when on a highway.
