Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

Got an email that I was accepted as a Brooks wear tester again this year. Maybe they'll actually have me test a pair of shoes this year.
:headbang: Good luck this time around! 3.3 hilly miles this afternoon here in Tucson, good Mexican food and some margaritas for dinner and now I'm off to get a good nights rest.

Freakin cold here - particularly since I could only run at night. So onto the dreadmill - 2 mile warmup at 8:30 and then a 5k at 7:40. McMillan says I should be doing these in the interval training range at 7:15/mile. That's a joke - I can't hold that. 7:30-7:40 seems to be tough enough for now.

 Sorry I could not make it last night. The office party went long and I had to get home. My daughter is doing well, she has a lot of red spots on her though. Doctor says she will have the rash for 7 days or so. I was reading the morning paper and in the editorial section there is a tool complaining about the marathon. Person lives in Saddlebrook which you will run past. I believe the shuttle for the marathon is up the street from the hospital. I worked there for quite a few years. We saw lots of patients from that saddlebrook area and they are very toolish. I am really excited for you. Looks like the weather will be perfect. Hope you enjoy your time here

I'm very glad your daughter is doing better  You were missed but I totally understand. El Charro was pretty cool - and their margaritas are a little too good... there were 8 of us (5 running the 1/2, 2 of us running the full) so we had a great time. The temps here are nice and the breeze is perfect - but man the sun is strong!! Wouldn't mind some clouds in the morning but regardless it's gonna be epic. EPIC!! :excited:

We dont get many clouds around here. Have fun.

Had an awesome workout this morning. I've been posting a bit over on the Michigan Forum over on BeginnerTriathlete. Turns out they get together for "Trainer-Fest" now and then over the Winter. Folks bring their bike trainers or rollers (and some fatty foods and beer for after). Today was the 1st. I did not want to be the n00b that stopped early, so I spent an hour and a 1/2 in the saddle, which is now my longest ride to date. It was a very cool and motivating and the time flew by being able to chat with other riders. I was able to chat 1/2 IMs with several folks that have done them, very inspiring. The guy hosting had a Tour d' France video going too. I came to a few conclusions while riding. A 1/2 IM is doable next year, BUT, I have to spend a lot of time in the saddle this Winter and on in to Spring. Also, I am going to have to put the tri bike on the trainer, versus using the road bike until Spring. The only reason I was avoiding it was more me being cheap and not wanting to burn up a good tire on the trainer.

Wraith, very good selection on the Margaritas. That salt will pay off big time for cramp avoidance.

ETA, watching swimming on NBC and saw that the Ironman World Championship from Kona broadcast in next Saturday @ 4:30 EST. Sure, I watched the webcast of the event, but love the way NBC weaves in the stories, etc. I set the DVR just in case I forget, but think I just might try and ride the bike on the trainer while watching the entire broadcast. Figure I can blame the salty sweat in my eyes for  at some of the athlete stories.

Sorry there hasn't been an update from me in a while. Truth is I haven't been able to do much running. I was on travel week and was able to run on Tuesday. Tomorrow I'm running a 5k with a friend of mine so we'll see how that goes. Should be cold and rainy.

Nasty day here. 40 degrees and raining all day. I did a treadmill session yesterday, so didn't really want to do that again today. So, no running today.

Did 2400 yds in the pool - and the kid came along. This means he can time me. 50yds - 26.88s. New PR. I'm convinced I can hit 25.xx if I work on sprints. My start and turns are nothing to write home about. But still: Booyah.

Prolly do some riding on the trainer tonight. Its something.

Hey, everybody. Only got about 6 hours of sleep last night, so I really didn't feel like running today, but I sucked it up and did 14 outside in the cold. I'm having a hard time getting motivated lately, which sucks, because I'm starting my 18-week Boston training program on Monday. Oh, well. That's winter in Wisconsin for you.

Bears fans - I can't imagine you guys are feeling too good about your chances against the Pack tomorrow, huh?

Wraith - Kick ### tomorrow, homeboy! I can't tell if there's going to be any raceday athlete tracking on the website, but just in case, what's your bib number?

Weather has been sour lately, so I ran some indoors this morning. My son had b-ball practice, so I ran the track around the top level of the gym. Could not find a distance calculation, but I ran 50 laps in about 30 minutes.

I also finally got to go to the specialty running shop to get properly fitted. I had a really nice and knowledgable lady help me. She first put me in some neutral Asics and watched me run outside the front of the store. She immediately diagnosed with me moderate overpronation and recommended a medium stability shoe. I tried a Nike (don't remember model), and a Mizuno Wave Inspire. We tested those and she observed that I still had a little more pronation than is ideal.

After a few more test runs and resizings, I ended up in an Asics Gel Evolution 5. It is actually classified as a Motion-control shoe, which surprised me. Actually, they are MC+ and are recommended for "bigger" runners. I am 5'11", 160 lbs. - not exactly big. The shoe itself felt really good. In wearing them around the house and running around the block once, I can definitely feel the stability compared to my previous shoes. It will take a little adjustment. Guess I will just see how they do, though I am somewhat unsure if this will turn out to be the right shoe...perhaps a bit too stiff.

Any of you require motion control? Any suggestions or things to be aware of as I get used to a pretty different pair of shoes? This is a new experience for me.

(Just for the record I am pretty sure Prosopis is referring to you in the race and not the Bears, since the Bears seem incapable of getting anyone this year).

Anyone find a race tracking link for Wraith yet? The old "I'll have one martini and switch to beer" mantra didn't work out so well last night, so me and the couch are going to be tight for most of today :hangover: so I thought I'd do some virtual cheering. I checked the race site and got an error message from the results link.

I am about 30 miles away from where Wraith is running. At 6:30 this am it was 45 at my house. Wraith is at a higher elevation so it may be cooler there. Morning was perfect for running. Now at 10:30am it is getting breezy out.

I am getting an error at the website as well. :towelwave:

breezy? breezy?!? Brother I live in the Windy City - what I experienced today was NOT "breezy"

Sitting having a beer with my cousin so I'll keep it brief today -

Running into the wind for 16 miles, despite the significant drop in elevation, was tough. Add to that a 290 foot ascent between mile 6.5 and 8 and the course was a lot tougher than I anticipated. I pushed through that uphill and I think I paid for it. Overall 2511 ft total ascent, 4232 decent. 4:28:47 may be slower than I wanted, but I honestly gave it everything I had and took only short walking breaks through to the end (Man I was tired!) - that's a big improvement over my past efforts.

Interesting side note: a running coach I know who ran planned on hitting 3:45 and came in 4:07 - so at least I'm in good company. It'll be interesting to see what other feedback the race gets.

Thank so much for all the support guys - I thought about you a lot while I was gutting it out at the end!! Now I must get back to my beer...

New "official" PR 5K 26:56.

Had fun at a small local run in New Baltimore. MI. About 800 people. Weather was perfect and I got to do this one with some friends which was neat. Every race I have ran I've done by myself so it was a neat experience.

####### aye, mate. :hifive: :D ----On my end, I have been getting frustrated with trying to hit pace numbers that are proving impossible to hit (based on my last blowout 5k time). Felt like crap today but went out and ended up doing 8.5 miles. The last six was done in two 3 mile laps. Odd thing - I got faster through the run. Started out at a leisurely 8:30 mile and finished with a 7:30 mile. Reverse split it by a minute or so. Considering I really wanted to skip the whole run, that wasn't bad at all! That combined with my swim PR has me pretty happy for the week (that and the Saints sweeping the dirty birds).

Nice work, Dexter. I followed up yesterday's 14 with an easy 6-miler. I was sore and tired from yesterday, so I really didn't feel like running, but once I got going, it actually felt pretty good. Averaged 8:01 pace.Boston training calls for 9 miles tomorrow with 4 @ HMP. According to McMillan, that's 6:45 pace, and I'll probably end up doing it on the treadmill, since it's supposed to snow tomorrow. We'll see....

It was not to bad 30 miles west of you. Glad you did so well. I did not realize there would be that much of an ascent. I thought the race would be a descent pretty much the whole way. :lmao:

Outstanding! Glad the cold and rain moved out for the race. 800 seems like a huge crowd for a race up there in the middle of December. Do you know if they used the same running route as the 5K at the end of the Anchor Bay Tri? I don't recall the streets, but it headed directly north from the downtown area by the beach and wound its way through a few neighborhoods by the water. Seeing your post reminded me that I received a Running Fit email (do you get them) this afternoon highlighting that they are having a triathlon event in March of next year and will be doing their Wednesday Night T-Rex Tri Series again next year. I'll likely head out to the event and will be doing at least one of the three T-Rex events. It was one of my favorites from this year. Here is a paste of the email:

Running Fit Tri Series

Yo T-Rex Tri Series Multisport Maniacs,

The link below is to what we hope you find an interesting 4 minutes of summertime memories. Watching it left us thinking, our tans have faded, and this will be a long winter ...

Nice work Wraith. A new PR! It was not the ideal time, but you can not control the eliments. Be proud of yourself!

By way of update:I ran 8 miles yesterday averaging a 9:15 pace. This was my longest run to date and it felt really good. I did my normal 4-mile loop twice. After the first loop, I had one of those moments where I realized I still felt really fresh and that things are beginning to get a little easier in some ways. As for the shoes, I did the first 4 miles in the new Asics. It was definitely a different feel, but they felt pretty good. They are a little heavy and stiff as I guess could be expected with shoes that are 1) new, and 2) motion control. Had no discomfort in my feet or knees, though. I did seem to feel a little "tightness" in my hips. It wasn't severe and not even really tightness, just a little pressure I haven't noticed before. Guessing that might be related to the shoes forcing me more to the center of my foot at toe-off. :confused:I quickly changed shoes for second 4 miles just to make sure I didn't get blisters with the new pair. Went back to my old Nikes. These shoes are 4-5 years old and were purchased for cross-training. They read "Nike Running" on the soles, so someone thought at some point that these were designed for running. I've never had any major problems with them while running over the past 6 months. But as soon as I took off the Asics and put on the Nikes I realized the Nikes have NO cushioning or stability at all. It suddenly felt like I was running in slippers. But I adjusted and finished my run without any difficulty.I'm still a little uncertain whether the Asics are really what I need, but I'm going to keep running in them and see how they do.

Great job on the marathon Wraith and the PR for Dexter.

My update: Well since the 1/2 last Sunday, I've had a bit of a head cold which made it difficult to get motivated to roll out of bed at 5:30 for a run. Mornings have been in the low 40s which is great for running, but does make it tough to get out from underneath the covers especially when you're having trouble breathing.

So I went 4 easy miles on Wed on a treadmill (traveling for work) and then Friday after work did 5 at about 8:15 pace (30 sec faster than my goal for the next half). Took Saturday off and did 8 on Sunday at 8:45 goal pace. The thing that made the 8 miler different for me is that I ran on a path that included some hills. I'm not sure how much elevation you need to put in before it really does you some good, but it seemed pretty taxing to me so I figured it was better than the flat courses I usually run.

Anyway, I'm planning to keep to my schedule of running 3-4 times during the week for 5-6 miles at faster pace than I was going and then do long runs on the weekend at about 8:45.

I was thinking I'd try to do a 15 mile LR about 3 weeks prior to the 1/2. Hoping it will help keep me from crashing at about mile 10.

I did 5 on the treadmill today. Limped my way back to my locker. Time to start the stretches.
Pretty much the same here. Except I was bonking bad. That is the only bad thing about evening workouts - they're typically before dinner.

I did mine this morning. I was fine while I was running. The second I climbed off the treadmill my knee was hurting and the stairs killed me.

We sound like two old ladies in a retirement home. Except no talk of hemorrhoids.

So last Saturday, I was on the indoor bike trainer for 75 minutes while watching a TV movie. Typical cable - 11-12 minutes of movie, then about 5 minutes of commercials. During the long commercial breaks, I'd stand up on the pedals to simulate hill climbing. Given the length of those commercials, it turned into really hard work! Now: For the couple days since, my upper quads have been quite sore - kind of like a post marathon feeling with some extra pain walking up and down stairs. So what does this tell me? Are the simulated hills targeting muscles that I've not otherwise been workin'? Could this specific training help both my biking and my endurance running? That'd be great, if that's the case.

Wraith - Great race. Sucks about the wind, but you can't predict nature. Great race though and congrats on the PR.

Dexter - Congrats on the PR

Gruecd - I am feeling ya on the lack of motivation. Seems that I love running in the cold, but I have a hard time going out there to get started. I have not been feeling great, so that makes it tougher, but I just can't get into the rhythm that I want to get into for my training days. I am skipping one or more a week for any number of reasons. Part of it is the holiday season as we are so busy with running around, I just can't find the time I need. I know that my training starts in a couple of weeks, but I am not sure if I am ready or not.

---------------------------

As an update for me. I ran 4 on Friday and 6 on Saturday. Nothing to write home about, but hey I am trying to get some miles in. Wanted to do 10 on Sunday, but woke up and my head felt like it weighed about 100 pounds. Head cold and did not run. Same for yesterday. To top everything off with me, my youngest finally got a cast put on his leg yesterday. This was from two thursdays ago when he jumped off the couch and missed the cushions he was aiming for. Toddler's fracture in the tibia that barely showed up on the x-rays yesterday. It sucks, but he is fighting through it.

After riding 90 minutes on the trainer on Saturday, I had similar soreness. OK walking, but add stairs and the fatigue was evident. For me, I think it was more a matter of time in the saddle than the intensity of sprints during the workout. I have a "Spinervals" DVD i need to take the wrapper of and get after. As I was riding, the other guys there had very set routines for when they sprinted and how they banged through the gears. As a challenge of sorts, like I stated, my plan is to ride the entire 90 minute Kona broadcast on NBC @ 4:30 EST Saturday. Anyone with me?2,500 yards swam for me yesterday. I am traveling for work and found a health club with a cheap 1 day admission. I had the pool all to myself for most of the swim and they only had a few lights on in the pool area. It was a neat atmosphere for a swim.

:hifive: Thanks for the reminder. I finished teaching a fall term MBA class last night, so my nights and weekends are fully free to add some workouts - a lot on the bike and doubling up some strength workouts. I'll be with ya on Saturday!!

:kicksrock: I'd love to hunt down a pool, but instead I think I'll just lay low, do the above bike focus and continue my bit-of-a-break until mid-January.

At that age they heal up so fast it is ridiculous. He'll be getting the cast off in, what, two weeks? It'll be a blip in your memory pretty soon.
