My Race Report:
For the record, it was UGLY as hell, but I'll certainly take it. My morning was hectic as hell. I was up at 5:30 to get ready for the race; then got both of my daughters up. Had to get our four year old dressed and ready for opening ceremonies for t-ball and her pictures (= I had to flippin' do her hair even); then had to get snacks ready for our 8 year olds soccer game. Then dropped the 4 year old off at neighbors who also had a kid getting pictures and going to opening ceremonies, then drove the 8 year old to a sitter, who would be taking her to her soccer game later; then finally off to my race (only a 20 mile drive from our house!).
All bathroom stuff went great, and I went for a mile jog to loosen up after getting my transition area ready. The jog did not feel good; I can't explain it, but it felt "off." The weather was warmer than they predicted (64 degrees), and the wind was easily blowing 20 mph (= I knew my bike time wouldn't be as fast as I thought it would). Between the start of the National Anthem and the race (they had Thunder Struck cranked to start the race which was really nice) my HR went up 11 beats (a new stat!).
5k #1
I started in the middle of the pack (about 120 racers), in case I ended up in a footrace at the end, and would then have a better chip time. After .5 miles, I was right on 6:55 pace (desired pace), but my HR was already 178 (Houston we have a problem!). I slowed down a bit, and mile 1 ended with a 7:00, but a 180 HR
I kept right at 7:00 pace through the rest of the 5k, and watched my HR get all the way to 191 (I now have a new Max HR!!!). The only explanation I can think of is that it was on trails, and I haven't run on trails since November. I thought about slowing down to get my HR down, but I REALLY wanted an overall podium and AG win, and didn't want people to get too far ahead. Plus, last year I didn't have my Garmin, and I had no way of knowing if my HR did the same thing last year = I "SandedTM" it. There were 13 people in front of me after the 5k.
T1
I nailed it. I don't yet know what it was, but it was darn fast.
Bike 12
The course was BRUTAL to put it gently. The course is very hilly, the wind was gusting at 20 MPH+, and the longest stretch (only part with the wind), was recently chip sealed. Adding to the difficulty was that there were multiple turns and ALL had loose gravel around them (last year they had street cleaners out the day before, and they didn't do it this year). The first and last mile were both up hill and right into the teeth of the wind, and they were my only miles over 3:00 pace. With my HR maintaining 177 bpm, I was really happy to manage an approximate 20.7'ish MPH. NOBODY passed me on the bike, and I passed 10 people = I was in third place after the bike (right where I wanted to be
).
T2
I took a little bit of time here, as my HR was 178 and I didn't want it over 170 when I started the last 5k. It was still pretty fast, but I did not rush at all.
5k #2
This was disastrous. Within one tenth of a mile both of my calves, and my right quad seized (cramped = first time while on the Rolaids). I pulled off to the right and stretched the bejesus out of them and watched two people pass me, as I took a good 2 minutes on the muscles. I then took off, and while the seized a little bit right around the end of mile 1, they held in there the rest of the way. I passed one of the two people around mile 2, and could see the other one approximately 200 yards in front of me most of the way, but could not gain any ground. Not including my time stretching, I was able to maintain an approximate 7:30 pace the rest of the day, which was much better than I thought it would be after that first tenth. My HR hovered around 188 the entire 5k, which is much higher than I've ever sustained it before (max was 193 right at the finish = another new Max!).
My calves nor my quads have bothered me in the least bit since that first mile, and am perplexed that they did at all. I sported my 2XU calf sleeves, was well-hydrated, it wasn't too hot, and did my normal Rolaid's routine. It might have been some carry over from when they cramped last weekend when like an idiot I did my run/bike/run after drinking and in 8)+ degree weather, but I don't know.
Even with the awful second 5k (only 7:55 pace'ish overall), I was able to win my Age Group
, and still took fourth overall. While it certainly wasn't pretty, I'm still very content. Regarding my goals:
My Primary goal, was to just finish = Accomplished!!
Goal 2:
Be faster than last year. Did not happen, though everyone's times were worse than last year (considerably) which is likely due to the wind, warmer weather, and a very slow bike course.
Goal 3:
Beat the guy that beat me at the tape. I crushed him...mostly because he was a no-show. The guy who I beat by :23 last year did race, and I beat him by 2:35 though!
Goal 4:
Have the fastest bike time; or at least 1 MPH faster than last year. I certainly wasn't 1 MPH faster, but I think I was slightly faster = those conditions and my extremely high HR at the start; I'll take it! I don't think I had the fastest time, as the two who were ahead of me on the bike, were barely ahead of me after the run, and seemed to be further ahead at the start of the 5k.
Goal 5:
Win Age Group, and podium overall. Damn close = I did AG win, but lost the podium to a girl (ended up 4th overall for second straight year)! I talked with her quite a bit after the race, and she came from Houston for the race, as a tune-up for trying to qualify for the Triathlon World Championship in two weeks, in Virginia. She ran in the World's three years ago + it makes me feel honored to have lost to her
I'm disappointed my body failed during the last 5k, but ecstatic to know that I can allow my HR to fly that much and still survive. It's now beer-thirty and I'm off to enjoy

Nice job.
Senior discount.Actually, I know your trick ...go back and delete an old post so that your post becomes 16000. :finger:
VERY, VERY Cool. What kind of hardware did you walk away with for the AG victory?
Nice work, guys!-------------------------
