Looking at the site, it appears that the race fee for the Bourbon Chase is $800 ($67 per person). Does anyone know if that's correct? They refer to it as the "final payment," so the fee could be substantially more than that...

The full payment is $1200. So the race entry is $100 per person. The other cost we will definitely have to share is the cost of the rental vans and gas. We do need to find two dedicated (i.e. non-runner) drivers.

Wraith: the "put your money where your mouth is" will be interesting. With almost all of us having to fly in for the race (not run), it could be a logistical headache. I'm in regardless of the headache, and regardless of what weird fetish you guys have over watching other dudes in bright colored tights.

Definitely LOTS of logistics to figure out, not the least of which is identifying the drivers. I haven't studied the 36 legs or anything, but considering that you have to run in the same order (so if you run #1, you run #13 and #25, too) I'm guessing we'll all be doing our share of hills. I'm way too excited about this for it to be so far away!

Hey guys. I thought I posted this yesterday in response to FUBAR, but i guess i did not actual post the reply.

I was going to try and get everything in order as soon as this years Borbon Chase is over with. That way we know we are in and can decide right before then who is in and all that. I don't think we have to have all the members of the team when we register. My buddy that is running it this year is still trying to find a few more people to fill out his team.

Sounds like we have a pretty good group and will only have to fill in a couple of spots. I think I can get some people to fill in what we don't have. I knw that vehicles will be an issue, but I like the group of clydesdales and rabbits. I think that everyone will have an opportunity to cover a bit of everything in the race. Wraith can probably attest to the terrain in those parts, but you can barely go 50 ft. without having to go up a hill.

More to come later as we get closer. As far as a facebook group or whatever to keep tabs on everyone, that is fine with me. I am probably one of the last people under 35 who does not have an account yet, but am getting plenty of pressure to have one. Whatever is fine with me.

Sounds great, I just can't commit to anything past this school year until January. I don't know where we'll be living then, if we're overseas or on the left coast, I won't be going to KY. But, I am very interested.

We hae one of the drivers down as I have already volunteered my wife to be a driver. She is more than willing to do it as long as she is not with child by that time or have just had a child. Although she probably does not want anyone wearing pink tights in the SUV.A lot depends on where you guys want to fly to. I live about 15 minutes from the airport in Cincy so I can shuttle some people around if need be. We may have to just wait and see on some of it, but there are a lot of possibilities.

found a couple of interesting things about heat and humidity affect running.

One is based on adding the temperature and dewpoint together:

90-100 is probably ideal, anything below 130 is pretty much OK to go for a fast time (maybe 120 for longer distances, say HM or above)

Between 130-150 will see a gradual slowdown in pace

Above 150, forget pace altogether and just focus on finishing

And here's another one based on dewpoint alone:

Dewpoint in the 60s: Tough for racing, training runs OK

Dewpoint in the low 70s: Hard training will be tough

OMG, did I just have a couple of brutal runs. I had to run yesterday after work, instead of in the a.m. like usual. Unfortunately, first I had to have dinner with my family. My legs were already balky because they were running on less than 12 hours of rest instead of the usual 24. Plus it was 72 degrees with 100% humidity - i.e., a dew point of 72. Did all 5 at 8:00 pace, but it was extremely challenging.

Darrin and The_Man - way to HTFU on your runs!!

I simply cannot run in the evenings if I've eaten. It becomes very uncomfortable very fast. Before kids I used to run right after work before sitting down for dinner with my wife (in front of the TV... boy does THAT seem like a long time ago!!).

pmb - 1) , and 2) about your wife being a driver - tho if you're trying to have kids, I really hope she will become unavailable (and not just because she's avoiding tri-man).

I'm positive I'll drive down with some folks from Chicago - the more I think about it, the more I'm quite sure Mrs. Wraith et. al. will not be joining for this trip. Vehicles will not be a problem - I may bring our Honda Odyssey, and my mom has a Tahoe that we can use as well. Having everyone chip in for a detailing (if needed) after the event would be a lot cheaper than renting vehicles!

Read the Runner's Guide on the site about renting vehicles. They recommend two 15 passenger vans - one van for each group of six runners. After reading it I fully agree that is the way to go. I know it will cost some money, but it sounds like money well spent. Read it and see if you agree. At least it looks like we have enough drivers to be able to grab anyone that is flying in.

I do think studying the legs, and assigning people their strengths will be important. We have enough speed to compete, but with each of running almost 17 miles, logistics will be crucial. I believe 2Young is our most evolved "over-planner" = this might be a task for him. We'll also have to name a Captain, which typically goes to the Senior member. Does anyone know who might be the oldest? I'm 43, could anyone possibly be older than that I'm assuming somebody is younger than 40 in our group = we will be competing in the "open" division. Can't wait!_________________________

My update:

When my alarm went off at 5:45 to do intervals on the trainer this morning (I have the kiddos = I couldn't venture out), I came to my senses and again realized that the trainer is no substitute for the road = I went back to bed, and will be leaving work early today to get a road ride in instead. I've certainly made worse decisions!

FWIW: just read the website for my upcoming tri, and the extra 5k that is run for the Oly vs. the Sprint has 250 feet of uphill = UGH!!

You will likely be much more comfortable in a 62, but faster on a 60. IF you are looking at this solely for the exercise/cross-training, get the 62. IF you want to race, go 60.

I'd probably say a 60 on a moto from a frame standpoint. Although their stems are usually steep and short so that probably fixes their problem with oversizing but turns you into a parachute.Just spoke with a friend who rides a 62" road bike and 60" TT bike. He's 6'5" with a huge inseam. He said that he's also comfortable on a 60" or 61" depending on the steam and manufacturer.

Hey Gruecd, my tri bike is a 49 CM, hope this helps I'd go with the 62 cm. My road bike is a 56 cm, which is way big for my height, but I am very comfortable on it.

If you have a 305, it has a bike setting, but you'll need to buy the bike kit. (I think that's the one you need)

Your Garmin should be all you need. The seat bag thingy is for a spare tube, C02 inflator & tire wrenches. If you don't want the tire changing stuff, you should get one for your cell phone if you flat out (good to have it no matter what). You'll need at least one bottle cage (I just use cheap bottles that fit the cages).

That reminds me. Gru and any other Moto buyers may want to pull the tires and replace the rim tape. I had the same issue as Wraith. Turns out the spokes were puncturing the tube. The tape wasn't wide enough to protect the tube. I had about 5 flats...always find it the next day...before I was able to resolve the issue. May not be an issue on this bike, but when Moto chases weight they'll go for it in weird places.The other to check is the crank bolts. They had used alumnium and were stripped. The threads were too weak to property tighten and the crank would get loose. Thank goodness I caught it before destorying the crank/bottom bracket.

Your LBS will gladly put rim tape on for you, and will also gladly check crank bolts; or they suck as a LBS. Though, you could do both pretty darn easily and save yourself a bit of scratch.

They're used to it. Just buy some piddy stuff there and they'll be happy. Bottom line is that you're a big guy and will tear stuff up. They'll be happy to make money off that too.You'll know about rim tape the first time you have to change a flat. Just make sure it's covering the spoke holes at that time.The crank bolt is in the center of the crank. Just make sure it stays tight but don't over torque it.

She informed me that she swim in H.S. and some in college and would love to give me a lesson if I'd let her. There's a chance I might be getting that "real-lesson" soon

FWIW: I got my bike ride in tonight. It was 95 when I started, with 14 mph winds. I got 31 miles and am ecstatic to have averaged 20.2. Tomorrow morning will be a good test for running on tired legs.

You and me both, brother. I've got 10 on the docket for today, and I actually opted for the heat. Rather than run this morning when it was 70 degrees with 90% humidity, I'll run later this afternoon when it's 87 degrees but only 48% humidity. Pick your poison, I guess.

My update: I am owed some HTFU's. I had a date that went MUCH better than expected = I didn't get home until 6 am 15 minutes after my alarm went off for my morning run. Needless to say, I didn't get my "scheduled" workout in. With tomorrow being my normal SRD, I'll either get this morning's run in this evening, or postpone until tomorrow am.

I've been getting a cramp/stitch whatever in my lower right rib cage for about 1.5 weeks now. Last week we had temps in the 90's and this week high 80's and humid.

I can normally bang out 4-8 mile runs 5 days a week without much of a problem, I can't make it 100 yards right now without getting this cramp. When I ran x-country in high school I remember my coaches saying if you're pee is clear your hydrated. I'm drinking water, not gallons but more than normal due to the heat. Am I dehydrated? 5 mile runs with a cramp the whole time are annoying.
