It's monthly totals time... I was able to log 65.1 miles in September. This is by far the most I've run in one month. ;)I'm now up against the biggest month of my training before the HM on 11/21. The schedule looks to be right around 100 miles. Just for fun, here's what Higdon's schedule calls for...10/01 - 10/03: 3, 3, 8 10/04 - 10/10: Core strength, 4, 40min tempo, 3, Rest, Rest, 10k race10/11 - 10/17: Core strength, 4.5, 8x400 @ 5K, 3, Rest, 4, 910/18 - 10/24: Core strength, 4.5, 40min tempo, 3, Rest, 5, 1010/25 - 10/31: Core strength, 5, 9x400 @ 5K, 3, Rest, Rest, 15K raceStarting in the last week of October my Tuesday runs are going to be the same length as my long runs on Sundays when I first started out (5). Mentally, 5 still seems like a long run to me. I'm anxious to see how it feels when I get to that point on 10/25.
I remember the good old days when I cold run 5 after work without any trouble. At one point I was running 5,5,7 then 13 on Saturday and maybe 8 or 9 on Sunday. I am doing everything i can to get back to that point. Ned, once you are there, never stop, it is a stone cold ###tch getting back.
I can certainly see that. I'm an impatient guy. This is the ultimate test for me. Falling back and starting all over would probably be the death of me.
I certainly thought it was going to kill me a few weeks ago. I am feeling much better now :)

Day 1 of 100: 5k run this morning @ a 8:16 pace, 150 hr. Was up until 2 this morning catching up on work and would have totally blown this run off otherwise. Travelling later today but I'm itching to get in a double and get ahead of the curve.

Was hoping to do 2.5 today but ran 2 miles in under 19:00 (4:44, 4:34, 4:33, 4:46). Felt okay but kids came out of the school where I was so I gave up on the last .5 mile.

Felt pretty good after it and while I think I could have gone another 5k today, I don't think that would have been the wisest thing to do. Right?

If the day stays cool and I have nothing going on tonight, I might run later.

Great start BnB. I was in a hot tub until 2am drowning my sorrows from the Aggie loss last night. I'm pretty sure I woke up still drunk, and am now starting to get my hangover. Thank goodness Friday's are my normal "off" day. :lmao: :lmao:

Probably fine to run again tonight, but two good rules of thumb to help avoid injuries are:1) never increase your weekly mileage by more than 10% (= if you ran 10 miles last week, don't run more than 11 this week), and2) don't ever work on speed and distance at the same time (that combination is reserved for race day!).

I can't ####### believe this. My Garmin is dead. Somehow the thing locked up after charging. Normally I could reset it with mode+reset, but the mode button has been broken for months. Un-#######-believable.

Geez, so many rules there should be books written about this stuff or magazines or something. Thinking about it, this weeks I ran 3.1, 1.25, 3.1, 2 miles (total of ~9.5 miles). That is the most I have run in one week, I know that. Maybe I should take tomorrow off and wait for Sunday now. Monday I will not be able to run so that is a break to. Should do at least 5k on Sunday... that is the goal.

Pre-marathon garmin disaster averted. I used a screwdriver to poke the mode button in so I was able reset it. If I was superstitious, I would say this is a bad omen. :penalty:

Got bored sitting here at lunch so I went out for a walk. Ended up going for about 45 minutes at a semi-brisk pace. I also found the high school's cross country trail way in back of the school. It looks like a nice relaxing loop. I will definitely take advantage of that later this winter.

I'd rather race in shoes that I literally just took out of the box -- I've worn the same model for years -- than shoes that were worn out.
I also agree with this. For my run yesterday I noticed an all-out blowout :lmao: of the heel on one of the shoes = new shoes already ordered. My last one's had just over 300 miles on them so they were due. Since I was injury free in them, I ordered the same again (NB 1064's). After wearing virtually nothing other than Asic's for a couple of decades, I'm surprised to be in NB's.

^^

begs the question... what shoes are "best" to wear?

I simply bought a $50 pair of Asics, never thought about New Balance or Nike for running. My feet have been wearing Nikes since elementary school and I have not owned a pair of Reebok shoes in over 20+ years. These are my first running shoes and while I did some looking around, I simply settled on Asics.

My current pair may be hitting ~70 or so miles so far.

As long as they are comfortable and you don't start developing soreness or injuries you're fine. It is all about comfort and injury prevention.

I'm heading out in 30 minutes to run for about an hour, can I just walk for 10 minutes in between? Are the rules posted somewhere aside from in the middle of this 400 page thread?

Saturday after my scheduled 10 miler I am going to the shoe store for a new pair. I will have to check into the compression socks, they sound like they may help my calves a bit.
How long does it take to break in a new pair before you're comfortable running a race in them? And what's the general rule for how long a pair lasts? I'm probably due for new ones, half marathon is 10/17. Enough time?
Running shoes don't technically need to be "broken in," but it would be nice to get a few miles in them before the race so you know if there are going to be any blister issues, so you can get the laces just right, etc. If it was me, I would like to get two weeks in a pair of shoes before racing in them, including at least one 10+ mile run. You should be fiine for a 10/17 half. I'd rather race in shoes that I literally just took out of the box -- I've worn the same model for years -- than shoes that were worn out.
Just picked some up during lunch, will wear them tomorrow on the 12 miler. My last few pairs have been Asics 2140s, I guess the new model equivalent is now 2150 - at least that's what the sales guy told me. Hopefully they feel the same.

I've decided that my long run woes are just part of my September allergy issues. In years past my asthma would bring me down big time in Sept, but since I am on daily medication for that now, I think what I'm seeing is the remaining symptoms without the dramatic breathing problems. My chiro suggested I try a neti pot to clear out my sinuses, but after watching a Youtube video describing the process, I just don't see it happening. Ever.
I know how bad that looks and sounds but it is gold. It was like magic how much it helped. I actually use neil med sinus rinse which lets me control the force of the water. The neti pot is a gravity thing. I like a little more oomph to my rinsing. First few times I did it I was pretty tentative but now it is a regular routine for me and I love it.
OK, after reading this, I decided what the heck and gave it a shot (so to speak). I read that you can use a bulb syringe and we happen to have several. So last night I mixed up a pint of saline, filled the syringe and... well, rinsed my sinuses. :X The process itself wasn't terrible, just a little pressure. Definitely an odd sensation. HOWEVER, now my ears have been clogged up ever since. If it's not directly related it's one heck of a coincidence. I probably gave myself a sinus infection in the process :lmao: 6 miles this morning - 2 easy (9:10s), 3 at short tempo pace (7:30s on a 7:35 target), walked for 2 minutes then did the last mile at 9:12.

On the shoe discussion, you need to be careful with new shoes if they aren't the exact model and year you've already been using. I've heard several stories of the "next generation" model (ie Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9 vs. GTS 10) being different enough to cause unexpected problems. Definitely give them a few runs at different distances before you race in them.

Good luck this weekend. :lmao:
:banned:
:own3d: Silly question - Garmin's are legal to wear at these things?
Absolutely! Ipods, however, may (and should imo) be illegal :ipodracesnob:Good luck Ivan :lmao:
The Country Music Marathon declared them illegal but most of us wore one anyway. :rebel:

50 minutes on the trail, lovin' it. 1 down, 99 to go

Just finished 10 my first 10 miler in 11 months. I felt great almost all the way, I really started to feel it the last half mile. Right now I am looking at my calves and I can see the muscles twitching. :lmao:

Anyway I finished in 1:56:21 at a 4/1 run/walk. That leave me 1 hour and 3 minutes left for the last 3.1 miles. I should be able to beat the half time of 2:58:36 I did last year.

I am off to get new shoes and maybe some new socks. Looking forward to any race reports.

This whole thing motivated me too. Came home from work, had some quick dinner and fell asleep on the couch. When I woke up, instincts directed me to make a drink and spend the night surfing on the couch. Instead, put the bike on the trainer and did a 1/2 hour hard spin. Glad I did. My son and I made a massive batch of cheese fries at about 10:30 last night while I was waiting up for my daughter to get home. I am going to modify my sig to track the 100 days, if for no other reason than it should keep this motivation going.

Just got back from dropping a small fortune at the running store. Bought a pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS 10. I couldn't afford the compression socks so I bought compression calf sleeves. Wearing them right now and it does feel different.

Last pre-marathon double-digit run this morning. Took it super easy, knocking out 12.5 miles in 1:47. Legs feel good.

Going into the office this afternoon. I'll be out next week Friday and the following Monday for the race, so I'm trying to keep myself from getting too far behind while I'm gone.

Ivan - No excuses for a bad performance tomorrow morning. It's supposed to be 36° tomorrow at 8 AM in Minneapolis. Perfect. Almost makes me wanna drive up there and run!

Hope you all have a great day.

What brand? FWIW, I like the sleeves a lot more than the socks for running & racing, and like the socks more for recovery.

What do you marathon guys do for meals the night before and morning of?
Worm - the night before is a light meal that will digest well (so I can be 'regular' on race morning) ...chicken and some pasta or potato. I'll try to eat rather early. The key meal for fueling is two nights before the race. That's the time for the classic carbo loading since that food will be properly digested by race time. On race morning, I like some oatmeal, usually with some raisins. I'll go light on the milk so I don't have a lactose issue. I might also have a banana closer to race time. I'll drink quite a bit too 'cause I'm a peeing fool on race mornings.---100 squats / 100 lunges yesterday. Which meant my legs were stiff and sore for today's 1/2-mile repeats. But I still was able to push through 7 repeats @ 3:25/half-mile.

Zoot. I am not wearing these during runs until it is too cold to wear shorts. I have enough people laugh at me while running as it is. :)

Great run! I get that calf twitching a lot. Kind of fun to watch it ...it's like the leg is possessed. Either during or after hard workouts, now, I'll wear my compression socks.Ivan, Prosopis - have great races!!! (Hope I didn't miss any[2Young]one)

I have the compression sleeves on now.

Does anyone know if they make compression sleeves for the upper leg?

ETA: Never mind, I found them. Thigh sleeves.

Same here - 10 in 1:27:19 (8:43s), pretty much right at my target race pace. The weather in Chicago was great today: +/- 50 degrees, mostly cloudy with a cold wind out of the north. Unfortunately, it's starting to look like it'll be warmer than that on race day.

Yep. I'm glad I thought to bring an old, pitch-able sweatshirt for the start. I might try doing the thing where you cut the toes off a pair of socks for arm-warmers. It's going to be kind of cold for the first hour, but like you said you'd choose it that way if you could.

Haven't run in a while...pushed this out today

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/51402753

Blister developing on inside of foot. I need to push out some more runs, half marathon next week. Any advice on how to keep the blister from getting worse? I have done two halves (last year), any other advice is good
Nu Skin & Body Glide or Vasoline for the blister. Do not pop the blister. Cake it several times over with the Nu Skin, then put glide on or vasoline before putting on the sock.

Most likely, you can find it at any drug store.

My toes are so calloused at this point, blisters don't even hurt. In fact, it would be pretty funny to do a FFA Runners Foot Picture Contest for the ugliest feet. I'd bet that I'm a contender. My wife can't even look at, as she so eloqently calls them, my "effing Frito Lay toes".

:wall:

thxI have some Glide from a Tri last year, will get that Nu Skin. CVS have it?
They should. My Zoots for tris we causing a nasty rub on the top of one of my toes. I started caking layers the night before the event as I run sockless with these shoes. The Nu Skin held up great through the swim and bike to where there was no run on the run.

:bye: I almost made through the season without losing a big toe, toenail. BUT, a couple of weekends of dirt running took care of that I think. It is at that black and blue underneath, with an opaque nail state.

I'm stunned that I've never lost a toenail. My nails have been fine but the skin on the tips of my toes are becoming curbs.

Except for a callous on the outside of my right foot, caused by other shoes, I have never had foot problems.Ran 3 miles today with the new Brooks, and they felt great. For the first mile or so I thought they felt a bit loose, but after that I didn't notice them at all. In fact I forgot I had new shoes on until I took them off after the run.I did the run in 30:43. That was probably too fast for a recovery run, but it felt so good. I just ran at what seemed a comfortable pace.I finished my running miles week with 23.01 at a 10:59 pace.

Heading out for my first 8k here in a bit. Getting excited/anxious at all the same time. People at work who sponsored me are keeping an eye on me here and I dont want to be embarrassed. I will say that most of the folks at work are in shock that anyone could run an 8k at all so I have that going for me. I am expecting coeds here as it is at the UA campus.

Here is the course. http://www.runnroll.org/8kracemap.asp

Anyway....best of luck to Mr. Karamazov and prosopis this morning! And a week from now, it'll be Wraith and me!!!! :excited:
