Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

Y'all were going to be hard pressed to talk me out of running it full speed. I would have listened if the consensus was to keep it at marathon pace.

Anyone here own a pair of the Brooks Pure shoes? I've seen them but they seemed to be targeted at the minimalist runners. I just tried on a pair of the Brooks PureFlow and thought they felt great. Thinking about getting a pair.

Fast forward a month and December was terrible for me. 0 running, biking or any exercise + over eating  . I'm sitting at 220lbs. I've run the last 2 days... and wow my legs are sore even with the short distances I've been going. Oh well, I've got the bike set up and I'm back at it.

Not to mention I have a HIM to do with you clowns this fall I need to make sure I can finish.

66 Kenyans with sub-2:08 marathon PRs will not make the Olympic Team. :jawdrop:

Kenya's Tough Choice: Oly Marathoner No. 3

by David Graham

With 2011 now ended and the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials looming close, I thought it would be interesting to ponder the difficulty that Athletics Kenya now faces in selecting a marathon team for London's Olympics this August.

No matter who is chosen for the Kenyan 2012 Olympic marathon team, Athletics Kenya officials are guaranteed of:

A. Leaving at least 1 sub-2:04 marathoner off of the team (an astounding admission when one ponders that until 2011, the World Record was 2:03:59)

B. Leaving at least 4 sub-2:05 marathoners off the team (until 2010 only 5 in history had broken 2:05)

C. Leaving at least 15 sub-2:06 marathoners off the team (until 2008 only five men in history had broken 2:06)

D. Leaving nearly 70 sub-2:08 marathoners off the team (back in the 1970s, those who wondered if Derek Clayton's Beamonesque WR of 2:08:34 would endure like Bob Beamon's long jump mark would be amazed to see that while Beamon's mark has only been legally bettered once, Kenyans alone have relegated Clayton's mark to well outside the top 50 list just for a given year...)

Ridiculous.
Even more ridiculous when you think about those guys, that are left off the team, would run TWO full marathons in the time it would take me to run ONE. Just nasty. On another note, is anyone going to be in Walt Disney World this weekend for the half marathon/marathon weekend? Was going to be down there for the first time (for the race, not my first time at Disney in general), and was wondering if anyone had any advice.

Not this year...maybe next.As a big Disney fan...want to run that at least once in my life.2014 or 2013.

I did the 1/2 in 2009. Getting in to Epcot to park was slow going, even at 4am. Don't wait in line for the porta-johns by the parking lot or just inside the gate. There are more that we wide open out by the start (and plenty of place to hit nature on the long walk out to the start). Alter your pace plan at the start for a bottle neck as you hit the overpass out of Epcot's backside and on to World Drive. Once on World Drive, it opens right up. Check the map for water stops. As I recall, there was one really long stretch between them where I was dying for water, but I can't recall when (may have been the first one). I've stated this before, I am disappointed I didn't run it slower and take more in. It was one of my early 1/2s and I ran it for time and missed a lot of the fun and photo ops and, if I had it to do over again, I would run it with my wife.

I did a little more then 3.5 today. It was pretty good and I feel I was faster now that I am ignoring HR. I still dont understand why my HR is SO much higher then others.

I have found a half I want to run in March. I want to use this Higdon plan http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/inter.htm

I have bought the book. I do think I will add a mile or two to every run in this plan. I just feel I can do that and it will help me improve. What I dont understand is what speed am I supposed to aim for on Tues,Thurs, and some Sat. It just says run?

The days that say pace I am supposed to go at race pace. I am aiming for something between 9:30-10:00 avg pace. I did my first 1/2 at 9:59. My second half was much worse but I was sick and there was a mountain in the middle of it.

Should I just plug my goal pace into Mcmillan and go with those numbers?

Did 6 tonight...avg 8:41...and have no clue why.

Started out at 9:02 in the first mile and for some reason...just kept going...8:42, 8:43, 8:33, 8:45, 8:22.

No rhyme or reason as to why I went at this pace...but was feeling pretty good (til that 5th mile 8:45...about quit there...but instead went out with an 8:22).

Time for some slow miles tomorrow and Saturday.

Anyone here wear the Vibram Fivefingers for running? I have a few questions.
I do Pete. I probably not be the best person to talk about them from a technical stand point because I just jog/run a few miles a couple times a week. But they have worked for me and are the only "shoe" I have found that allows me to jog/run over a mile that doesn't apply to much pressure on my right foot to the point that I have sharp pains in it the next day and cannot continue to run. If you have questions send a PM or talk here or the next time in Gears.
Bump for this. Anyone else? I've been using them for like 3-4 months now.
I don't think any of the regulars are into the minimalist, but I could be wrong.
Hmm...doesn't look like it. It's my first winter with em and I've got a few questions. If anyone other than Madshot sees this and goes the "minimalist" route, please let me know - thanks.

Hey, guys. Nothing too exciting going on here. Trying to do 5-6 runs/week, a couple of swims, and a couple of yoga sessions. Did just do a couple solid back-to-back 8-milers the last couple days, averaging 7:28 on Wednesday and then turning around and averaging 7:18 yesterday with the last two miles at 6:51 and 6:46.

Houston half marathon is next weekend, but considering that I'll be partying with the pro marathoners on Saturday night (hopefully including Ms. KG), I doubt I'll be in any shape to "race." Then one week before ramping up the mileage and adding back some quality to get ready for Boston.

I'm feeling like a fat lazy slug. I've gained 5lbs since the marathon. This is the first time I've gained more than a pound since beginning of 2010. It seems like these past few weeks have been a waste, runningwise, but it really shouldn't be much of a surprise with all of the holidays. It's amazing how quickly you get used to 40-50 mpw.

As punishment for skipping the past 2 runs this week :bag: I did a semi hard 10K today. I didn't feel that great, but it wasn't that bad either. It felt hard at first but then I settled in and was in that comfortably hard mode. Ended up at 50:32/170.

T minus 9 days until my 10 miler. Here's to hoping I still have some of my marathon fitness to carry me through.

If any of you guys have a spreadsheet of how you capture/collect the data from your runs that you would be willing to share, please let me know and I'll PM my email address.

If anyone captures HR data, that would be particularly interesting to me as well. I have the Garmin 305 that I use but I don't download anything from it.

I'd like to keep the 2012 runs in an Excel sheet for me to stare at. :nerd:

Agree with all of this. Disney does a nice job during the race. I think their pre-race and post-race stuff is a bit weak. Can't agree more on the slow down and take it all in. Pictures with the characters, etc. If you are in the last corral (because you didn't submit a time), try to be near the front. There are a ton of walkers and you want to avoid them!Good luck and I expect a race report!

Thanks for the tips. I can't recall if I submitted a time or not, but I've run the Peachtree here in Atlanta from the back corrals before, so I've got plenty of experience dodging walkers. Will do on the race report.

Hope you see this. I had a print of a 47 minute 10K and a 1:50 1/2 and they put me in corral B and took me out of whatever they had me in with no time submitted. Even there, the top of the overpass out of Epcot was jammed.

Just use RunningAHEAD. It's an online training log. You just plug in your Garmin, click a button to upload, and it's all right there at your fingertips. Auto upload to Facebook, too, if you're into that kind of thing.

Let's see if it happens, first. I'm very good friends with one of the top women, and my buddy is very good friends with another (who I've also met). My buddy's friend is good friends with KG. He tells me that we're definitely IN, but we'll see.

The only thing I'm not sure on is that my wife and I both share the same watch so I don't want her runs to be put into my spreadsheet. Do you happen to know if that can be avoided? If you aren't sure, I'll do some investigation of the site and see what I can figure out.I appreciate the link.

I believe the Garmin Training Center app allows you to have multiple users and you can load activities into each user. I think you can also do it with separate instances of the app. No idea what you can do on the web, but it would need to be a similar solution. The 305 doesn't natively support more than 1 user, you have to split it up with the software.

I ran 4 miles tonight. I am in week 1 of Higdons intermediate 1/2 plan.
You just finished a full. No need to start at week 1 of a half program. You can just jump to the end and maintain whatever it is that Higdon is calling for at that point.Honestly, halves are easy, at least in terms of the endurance needed to complete them. You shouldn't really need to "build up" to this.

Funny non-running anecdote. I'm currently in Chicago attending the annual meeting of the American Economic Association. One of the sessions I went to this morning featured Greg Mankiw in a panel on tax reform. About 15 minutes before the session started, a group of Chinese grad students came up to him and asked to have their pictures taken with him. Mankiw has a good sense of humor and graciously agreed to stand there while all three fiddled with their respective phones to get one-on-one pictures. No pennies though, at least from where I was sitting. You can google this yourself if you don't believe me, but while Greg Mankiw is a way better macroeconomist than Kara Goucher, he's not as easy on the eyes.

:bag: I did not think of that. I thought the plan seemed easy.

55* on a Saturday in January....was nice little 9 miler this morning.

Easily maintained a 9:24 pace...HR stayed in tune about 158-162 the whole time.

Thanks for the post banana fish  I can never read enough of that syuff. I guess I am really looking for a plan to improve as I do have a good base going.

This morning I got out in the 40's and did 7 miles.

10:46 pace with HR of 165.

My HR really bothers me. Most of you in here would have a HR of 150 or lower for that pace. I am starting to think "I is what I is" :popeye:

Achievment unlocked! Just finished the MS Blues half at 1:58:36. Felt really damn good too.

The slow paced training really was the key. My HR averaged 165, compared to 175 at Memphis a month earlier. The race I felt a million times better. This course was much hillier than I thought too, moreso than Memphis was.

Thanks again to all the folks in this thread. I'll do up a RR Monday morning.

Time to settle in for a little football, WHO DAT!?!?!?!?

Congrats man....you mentioned Hilly...but wondering how the rest of that half is...thought about doing that one at some point.

well done jb, looking forward to the report.

5 hour run for me this morning in the mountains mostly on single track. 22.37 miles, but I suspect I went farther. 13m 22s pace. I did walk a lot of the hills and was down to a 15-16 min pace in the last hour. This was more of a time and hr run rather than pace. Pretty stayed in zone 1-2 the entire time. Worst part was I forgot my shoes and was stuck with 1 yo road shoes with 500+ miles that have become walking around shoesw for 9 months.

About 30 minutes into the run the ##### running with a pitbull off lease approaches me. The dog charged and snapped/bit me. Teeth mostly caught the front of my fuel belt at the pouch, inches above my junk. Felt some teeth, but no broken skin. Lady ask did he bite you? I say yeah and then take off again. Dog charges me again from behind. I tell her, "You might want to consider a leash ####### #####."

Congrats! The terrain there is the same as here, so I know what you ran and I've heard lots about that course. Not an easy one.Oh yeah, and who dat right back to you - Saints set an all time yardage record tonight. Now we need to do it in Candlestick.

On my end, no running this week other than hurting myself yet again and starting the rehab yet again. So not much but biking and swimming. 75 miles ridden and 8500yds swum. Swimming is going well. Brought my 500yd time down to 7:07 in the drag suit and today (despite very tired legs from a 30 mile ride) somehow hit a 1:07 100 in the drag suit. That's gonna be close to a minute in the fast suit. Even did a 10x100 sprint set with :10 rest on Thursday and didn't pass out - though I wanted to. That is a good sign this early in the training. Anyway, enough blabbing about swimming.

Great job! 165? You sand bagger. ;)Looking forward to the full RR.

Worst part was I forgot my shoes and was stuck with 1 yo road shoes with 500+ miles that have become walking around shoesw for 9 months.About 30 minutes into the run the ##### running with a pitbull off lease approaches me.
5 hours?! Dang dude. You need to get a CCW permit and shoot the stupid dog next time. Glad your OK.

Salvaged a lazy ### week with a decent 15 miler today - 9:33/155. It was a tale of two halves where the first 7 or so was sluggish. The back half felt really good. Yet again my wife brings some perspective to things. I was commenting on feeling like a lazy slug this week and she said "how many lazy slugs are running 15 miles on Sunday mornings?". GB that woman.

Sounds like a keeper.

Jb - congrats on the run! Sub 2 hour half is nothing to sneeze at. Way to go. Can't wait to read the RR.

Ned - just a casual 15 miles? Damn! Way to keep that base!

Bananafish - don't remember your posts here in the past....if you are new, welcome. (Admittedly, I get burned out after doing a marathon so I disappear for bit - so if I just missed your posts, sorry.). Regardless, you are a Steeler fan, so you are good with me!

ALL - thanks for the running spreadsheets that you use. I need to look at what has been sent (and links) before I figure out what best for me. Thanks to each of you that sent me something. I appreciate it!

MY UPDATE -

Friday - went for a run on a nice pedestrian bridge over a river and banged out a hard 5K to the tune of 7:36/mile pace.

Saturday - a local running club had a relaxed run that encompassed a 3.1 out and back over pretty hilly terrain. They had 30 people trying to run 10 "laps" for a total of 31 miles/each. Not sure how many actually completed it but impressive none the less. I ended up doing 3+ laps for a total of 10 mies at 8:38/mile pace.

Sunday - lazy day. My legs are tired from the last couple days.

Back from a fantastic two-week trip to Sydney - great to explore an interesting city (and a trip to the surrounding mountains), but even better to spend time with my daughter, who is living/working there for a year post-college ...though a very emotional goodbye at the airport.

Solid two weeks of run training while 'down under.' I did two 50 mile weeks with runs from 7 to 15 miles, which was a great way to explore the city and, in particular, the incredible coast. Temps were generally in the 80's. :tan: Australia is sure hilly! Some of the runs were along the coastal walkway, which rolled up and down along the Tasman Sea with a mix of beaches and rocky cliffs (parts of the walkway were cut right into the cliffs). Other runs were on a two-mile loop in the large Centennial Park (a sequence of an outer bike lane, then a driving lane, a run/walk path, and inside that a horse path).

I think "Sydney" is Aborigines for "cleavage," but that might have just been the effect of the high temps combined with the eye candy in the city, on the running path, and on some packed and popular beaches.

Gents,

Killer sale going on right now if you are looking for a running jacket here. Use the NEWYEAR code and it is $12.50 with free shipping. I ended up also getting some Ultralight CRG gloves.

I did see that they tend to run a bit tight, BTW.
