Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

pmb: awesome week of workouts. I truly miss the stroller days. My oldest loved the stroller, and went with me on approx. 3 runs per week for more than 3 years. Now she's 10 and more likely to push me in a stroller than I am her

I got home last nights and did P90x Arms and shoulders last night and got in 8 miles on the elliptical this morning. Tonight will involve quite a bit of Mardi Gras debauchery, so I'm declaring tomorrow a SDO.

 I've been wanting to get P90x mixed back in to my routine to help strengthen up the core since I've been a slacker and been in run only mode for quite a while now. The thought of doing Ab Ripper right now gives me chills.

This thought has been crossing my mind too, post marathon. I don't have any races planned for the summer. I need to hit up a 5 or 10k. I'd love to see the p90x results starting at 185, instead of 245. Certainly don't want to give up any running though....

I've battled with this a lot, but I haven't taken a serious look at it since I'm far too hooked on these 40-50mi weeks to make that change. I think the best thing would be to replace the P90x cardio with running workouts. I wonder what it'd feel like to run after the Legs & Back routine... :XI'd be curious to follow what you do if you attack it after your marathon.

I still don't know how I'm going to proceed. I went to it this weekend and last night as I've been having difficulty getting out on my bike and am Jones'ing to get into some sort of shape again. In the short term, I think I'm going to try to do Chest/Back; Shoulders/Arms and Legs/Back once a week with my running and elliptical thrown in. I'll throw in Abs and Lunges on my own time, without a hard schedule.

In a tough spot with training right now. Wife is recovering from laproscopic surgery last Friday, 5yo son is the sickest he's ever been in his life, and I feel like I'm getting the flu.Ran 7.5 yesterday on weak legs, and going to try and do 5-8 today depending how I feel. Supposed to be doing 8 with some 100m strides.
You don't have influenza, or you'd be knocked on your ### and not even contemplating running. You most likely just have a cold. 8 easy miles with a cold is no big deal.Edit: Feel free to skip the strides.
Well I missed my workout yesterday because I took my son to the doctor and he has pneumonia. Yesterday sucked.Back at work now so I'm going to try doing 8. It is a cold and not the flu, but running with it is definitely the suck. My legs are affected. Instead of fatigue at mile 8 I get it at mile 3. If everything works out I'll just skip my thursday rest and run every day from now until sunday.

I certainly hope that it continues as a nice trend (me pushing him and not the other way around). I think that it certainly can serve as a help as good resistance for normal GA runs. Also hope that it would do good to foster being mobile once he gets of the age to want to run as well. I doubt he will remember much, but can't hurt to try.

Well done, pmb!

:bag: I bought new shoes last night (Asics Kayano). When I went back and added up the miles on my old shoes, which were visibly showing signs of wear (never good): 850 miles. :bag:

Decided to do Ab Ripper after a 5 mi recovery run today. Ooof I lost a lot of core strength. Managed 230 reps total and only had 14 mason twists in me at the end. I started out hitting 25 on the first three and fizzled out like a donk who went out too fast at a half marathon. :bag:I wrote off last week as a loss with only getting a 10 and a 5 in. Being sick sucks ###. I'm still congested, so I'm just praying at this point that this thing doesn't come back for a third time.

Holy crap! If I wore a pair of shoes for 850 they would just be insoles and upper mesh. You're a lucky man.

Kinda quiet around here lately. Not much new to report on my end. Followed up Sunday's craptastic "long" run with a 5-mile recovery run on Monday and a solid 10-miler yesterday afternoon. Next couple of days will be another 5-mile recovery run and a 9/4T. Just not sure what order.

20 on tap for the weekend.

It has been slow here. I can't lie, been enjoying the taper week (if thats the correct term). 3 miles on Friday and 8 on Saturday...It all has me super anxious. Grue, those bastards hit me up with a 2 night minimum on that room when I tried to alter it. I still had my original room reservation, so we're all good.

Welcome to taper madness. :excited:

Speaking of quiet, there are a few people we have not heard from in forever. Sending out an APB for The_Man and DarrenI40. Have not heard from either of them in quite some time.

------------

Did one part of my recoveries yesterday as expected. I did not get in the 4 miles last night, but did do some swimming last night while my boys had lessons. I figure that was almost as good as the recovery. I am not sure if you would call it swimming or not, but they started keeping my lap time with the minute hand.

Went out at lunch today and did 9 hilly miles. I want to go out tonight and do 5 more to finish up the 14 for today, but I am not sure I will. I just don't have the energy at night to do much.

Have a great day all.

I've spoken to Darren a few times (we play Words With Friends quite a bit :bag: ). He's been fighting back issues. Not sure how his back is currently, but that was the last I heard.I've been thinking about The_Man too. Hope everything's alright.

:sadbanana: I miss me some Darrin and The_Man. Hopefully their lives are too busy with awesome stuff to be here. Tri-Man: Nobody here is calling you stupid. Also, Kayano's are the Cadillac of shoes IMHO. pmb: way to get in workouts :thumbup:jb: as Ned said...let the madness begin  Grue: way to get back at it. ___________________________________My Update:I HTFU'd this morning. I Mardi Gras'd pretty darn good last night and planned on today being a SDO. Instead I rolled out of bed at 10:00 and got my wobbly self onto my bike for a pretty good 16 mile ride. I might pull a double and do legs and back tonight. My head is still very hurty though.

Nice! Man, I forgot just how tough P90x was. My hip flexors are on fire today thanks to that simple little 16mins of fun with Ab Ripper. Doing a 9mi with 5LT later today. I'm sure I'll pay for this. :X

Enjoying heck out of taper week.

Ran 8.5 on Monday. No snow at 3600 ft, but 4 inches at 5600 ft. Knocked out 2000 ft climbing in the first 4 miles, 2200 ft over 4.25. Set a new pr for this route which was encouraging. The 14 min pace up wasn't that encouraging.

Nothing yesterday. Will do an easy 3 today.

Weather forecast for Saturday is mid 20s to mid 30s with snow showers. Sucks, but is what it is.

I did the ab ripper one time during this marathon training cycle (early on). Yep, just did it one time.

I PM'ed him a bit back and he blew me off. Good to hear he's around, though.---As far as nothing much going on - over the last two weeks: 40miles biked, 49.5 miles run, and 22,500yds swum in the last two weeks. So just nose to the grindstone. Body is a bit tired since my last day off was the 8th, but no SDO until Monday. 4k swim and bike trainer session on the schedule for tonight.

Unfortunately none. We haven't had any snow to train in this year. I'm not real comfortable just buying yaktrax and putting them on for the first time at mile 15. It's supposed to be warm two days prior so I don't think the accumulation will be significant.Last week they were calling for 50's and sun. This update has solved the shorts v. tights delimea and I'll be wearing a long sleeved shirt and packing a light jacket, gloves, and two hats.

:goodposting: :goodposting: Go get'm BnB!____________I'm happy to be back in the saddle and 100% healthy. Aside from the screaming abs and hip flexors, today's 9 with 5 LT wasn't too bad, all things considered. 5 tempo miles were 8:06/176 average. I felt like I was just stuck in 3rd gear and couldn't shift to 4th. My body felt like it wanted more, but the legs just didn't have it. I finished feeling like I had 2 more tempo miles in me. Which I'm happy with.

Hi everyone. I am back :bag:

My last run was 1/16/12 :hot: I dont know if anyone remembers but that was a run where I had to bolt home to get to the toilet. Next day or so I had a very high fever. I have never really recovered from that. Strep has gone through my family but I have no health insurance so I never saw anyone. I have gone through all the symptoms of strep though. I also ended up with a lot of tooth pain. I have dental ins so I went to the dentist and he gave me an rx for PCN. I am just finishing that and I feel better. I am at maybe 70% now? This is the longest I have ever been sick. I feel horrible that I have not been running. I tried to a few times but it just was not happening. I was coughing, hacking, trouble breathing, headache etc....

Just freaking miserable.

I am still scheduled for a half marathon 3/25/12. I have given up any hope of improving any personal times. If I had not already paid and I was not such a cheap skate I would not even run it. Having paid for it I will crawl the thing if I have to.

On the bright side, yesterday I went to a really nice running store called Fleet feet. http://www.fleetfeettucson.com/

They filmed me on a treadmill and did all the measurements. The girl was pretty surprised that when I sit my foot is a 6.5 and when I stand it is a 9.5. She gave me a spiel about compression of the arch/foot etc... I really feel like I got a good fitting from a pro and not just some sales person.

I ended up with a new pair of Brooks Ravenna 2 and some inserts called Superfeet. I am slowly breaking these inserts in as I was told to do. They feel pretty good and much better then the Asics I have been wearing. I paid $158.00 for this stuff :jawdrop: I can read my wifes mind as she saw that. I probably could have seen a doctor for that cost :lmao:

Tomorrow I plan on going out for a real slow whatever I can do run. I just want to build up to where the half will be a challenging training run. I just want to feel good again. I cant believe how quick I got sick and for how long I have felt like crap. At least I am not alone. There are many people in these parts battling this crap.

I have not been reading this thread since my last run as I just find it depressing when I am not doing anything. I hope everyone has been well and I hope I bounce back tomorrow. I dont expect much but I would like to be able to say I ran.

5 relatively easy miles on Monday at a 9:04 pace.

3.3 tempo that average out to a 8:27 today.

10K in five weeks. What's the best I can hope for? Can I gain enough speed to average under 8:30?

Gain? You're already there.
I'm pretty sure that 8:27 for 5K is not the same as 8:27 for 10K.
If the 5k was at tempo pace you're there for 10k at race pace. Add in your description of 5 easy miles at 9/mile and I'm even more convinced. Assuming you have the training to hold over the last mile or so I'd predict low-mid 51:xx.Also, I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly announce my crushing  for the 10k distance. She and I truly love each other and try to plan as many sojourns together as possible.

That would excite me. Ran this in 49 flat last year, but having our second son has thrown my running schedule all to ####. The best part of running in the low 51s for the Cap 10K is that there are going to be tons of fit, but not overly fit chicks that I  that are going to be running about that pace.

Depends on how you define "tempo." If you're like me and your tempo pace is somewhere between 15K and HM pace, then I'd agree with Sand; you should have no problem holding this same pace for a 10K.

Ran my best time since I started this up again

3 miles: 23:22

Not shattering records but I was on the couch eating chips in December. So a sub 8 minute mile over 3 is great for me

Its February 23rd...supposed to be 75* today.

This after snow on Sunday.

No wonder my sinuses are driving me crazy.

Still plowing through this week.

Did a nice easy 9 miler yesterday...will get in 4 this afternoon and then 12 (6 easy, 6 @ race pace +20s) on Saturday 2 weeks out from my next half. Going to absolutely crush this one (and happy to get to finish inside LP field...Titans stadium...with the Titans cheerleaders there to put medals on the finishers).

Its been like that here ShoNuff, it was 70 driving to work this morning. I went for a Tuesday afternoon and got a little sun.

Whats going to be my suggested time off after this marathon? I'm trying to plan ahead a bit. I need to get a 5k or a 10k (or both) under my belt while I'm in pretty good shape.

I had actually told myself no HM's, but one popped up here locally. The wife and I have a vacation planned for the gulf coast and theres a 5k while we'll be there.

Its probably not smart to do a 5k on May 12, then a Half on May 19, but its doable huh?

Lots of good stuff posted in the past 24 hours!

Sand/Ned/Prosopsis: Great to hear that you are getting healthy and are back at it

BnB: It's almost Go Time! Giddy'up soldier. The snow will just enhance the experience, and more importantly, your race report

Prosopsis: Great that you got yourself a fitting. Consider the money spent as insurance from future injuries/bills.

Bentley: I'll third it = You can certainly run 8:30's. Make sure you SandTM the run and you'll be golden. I'm a HUGE fan of the "fit, but not overly fit physique. With as many coeds as there will be racing with you, my expectations for your race stalking abilities is quite high.

Furley: Update on your workouts?

I'm in for 60 minutes on the elliptical and ab ripper tonight. Most of my body is a little achy, but good achy right now. I'm looking forward to Friday as a SDO. I've gotten 11 workouts in over the past 9 days.

edited to add: Our predicted high today is 88 degrees  Every year our subdivision has been in existence (4 years) the kids that live there have done a February swim. Tonight is this year's freezing of the kids event. Good times.

You'll probably need a solid 3 weeks of recovery, post marathon. I don't think I felt fully recovered from my first until a month later.Racing a 5K and then a HM a week later will be a non-issue. A 5K is really nothing in terms of recovery.

Prosopis - Welcome back. Take it easy getting back into it. Don't go and get yourself injured. It will be tempting to hammer some runs like you used to.

Sand - Glad to see you getting in quality training.

Going to bore you guys with another weather forecast. Rain and snow now out of the picture. Showers Friday morning followed by high wind and 52 degrees. The wind should dry things up. Looks like we'll start off at 20 degrees getting up to 40 at some point. Mostly sunny.

6 miler last night, 9:13 average at 141 hr (mid zone 2). Probably ran that too fast but it felt comfortable. I think I got a little fitness boost over the last week. I'd like to do the first mile at a 9 min pace, 2nd mile at a 10 min pace; thereby banking 5 minutes towards the 3 hr, 15 mi cutoff. Weighed in at 212 this morning, down 25 lbs since Jan 2. Looks like I'll miss my 210 goal, especially with some carb loading.

Good news regarding the weather! Will the winds be with or against you?! Being down 25 lbs. = kudos. Getting to 210 not that relevant. Awesome that you are seeing a boost in speed. I am so stoked to hear about this run!

Just wanted to personally thank all of the people in this thread that have supported and donated to my JDRF fund raising campaign. The response has been beyond anything I could have imagined. I'm very grateful to you guys and you will be in my thoughts this weekend.

One last favor, I have posted a thread in the FFA. An occasional bump or two would be appreciated. LINKY
