Ran a 10k in June (4 Viewers)

Back from vacation and, as always, needing a vacation to recover from vacation. Got in 7 workouts and still gained weight. Did three runs in three days in Sun Valley, ID (at 6,000 ft of altitude), a 10K pavement run (they plow and salt the bike/run routes) and 2 3+ mile trail (snow/ice) runs. The trails were beautiful with the mountains ringing the area. Had to use the YakTraks as in was icy all over. Temp for my 2nd trail run was one degree above zero. Back down in Boise, I ended the trip with three workouts in less than 24 hours. Did a 4 mile trail run with the first two miles straight uphill with just over 700' of gain (from about 2,900' of altitude to 3,600) and then straight back down. Interesting to me, was that my HR was relatively low on the climb, staying around my target HR of 164. I was impressed with myself until I asked my brother-in-law (Mini Chad) what his was at and he was at 138 :bag: That evening, I did a hour and a half snow shoe at Bogus Basin above Boise at 6,000' of altitude. It kicked my ### more than the earlier run. I thought we'd be shoeing on the cross country ski trail. Nope, they had a snow shoe specific course with ton and tons of up and down, and it took using poles to keep from tumbling down. Wrapped the vacation with a 1 hour spin class the next morning. It'll be interesting to see how altitude training translates to flat land. I need to get serious about dropping the winter weight and keeping it off.

Tough week returning from being sick. Fighting the urge to get frustrated. Just have to keep plugging away.

Tues - 5mi recovery. First run after being sick. Felt OK, but HR was high and ran too fast. 9:40/149

Wed - 9mi w/ 5LT. Abs/hips were super sore from Tues night Ab Ripper, resulting in no leg drive. I felt like I had more in me after finishing the 5 LT miles, so that was encouraging. Legs just had no pop. 8:06/176 for the 5 LT.

Fri - 10 mi GA. Ran the majority of this in the rain, which sucked ###. It was a cold November like rain, but I had to get the run in. HR was high again and abs/hips still sore. 9:30/158

Sat - 5mi recovery run. Ran this with my wife, so it was slower than usual (which I needed). It was really cool running with her for more than 2 miles. She ran great. 11:31/133

Sun - 16mi trail run. Ugh. This destroyed me. I only managed 13.1 and had to fight through the last mile which was the hilliest. Ended up with 911ft of climbing at a 11:01/156 avg.

42mi for the week. HR has been too high all week. I'm hoping its just the side effects of being really sick and taking last week off.

Damn dude.

Great work going on in here as usual.

61* clear skies...just had to get out there today.

After my week got all changed up last week...seemed perfect to get out there today.

5 very easy miles for me.

Then another .43 with my son around the block. He did very well (really need to work on his form :) ).

He held in at about 11:30 or so per mile pace which was comfortable for him to make sure we finished.

He could have gone quicker as I wanted to see what he had in him and asked if he wanted to go fast to finish.

Not sure I was prepared for his fast. Probably about .08 of a sprint at 6:50 pace at the peak of it. Not back for the scrawny kid.

Outta the clouds but still feel like I'm on a cloud. Race report and the Ned details on Monday. Executive summary - Greatest race experience ever. Most beautiful course ever. Challenges from boulder fields, ice flows, -30 degree wind chills, creek crossings, wicked winds, snow bursts. Huge long range views, scenery like you're in the Canadian Mts. If you're a runner, this has to be on your bucket list. Sanded the first 5k. Gru'd and Tri'd the entire race. Beat my goal by about 1hr 45m. Got stronger in the second half and could have gone another 10 miles. Not just a little stronger, sub 9 min flat miles at the end. Felt alot of inspiration from the posters here from all the generous donations to JDRF...going to surpass $3k. That must have been the difference because nothing in training prepared me to do this.More on Monday eve when I have some time and access to the data.ETA - Family/girlfriend wanted to see me finish. She asked what my best possible time would be. I said anything less than 9 is not possible, closer to 10 would be my guess. I actually was so far in front of the that I got my finishing swag, made the mile trek to the start and relexed a few minutes before driving back near the finish, hiding my truck, and running the last mile again so they could see me finish. When I told they afterwards they got a huge kick out of it.
:excited: That is fantastic. I cant wait for the full report.

I am experiencing the same thing. I am also hoping it is due to the lay off from being sick.

first trip to a running store and first official "running only" shoes. great experience. the guy that did the fitting was extremely helpful, offering training tips, encouragement and advice in addition to hooking me up with a great feeling pair of shoes. i'm fired up for 5 miles tomorrow (longest run of my life).
Go for it! Once you find a brand that is right for you, then you can always buy them on-line or at a store like Sports Authority. Let us know how the 5 miler goes.
Well that was a disaster. The new shoes did not go well -- ended up with blisters on both feet in a rather odd place. I'm not sure if I had them laced up too tight or what -- they felt great in the store-- but the inside of both feet near the front of the arch started burning about 3/4 of a mile in. I toughed it out for a while, but stopped after a little over 3 miles. I could have pressed on, but I think I made the right decision. I'm pretty disappointed, but I think I'm more eager for this week now. I've got tons of excuses for today (too much beer yesterday, way too much food all weekend, and 2 rounds of the sechs with the mrs. since 11:00 last night :excited: ) but I really think without the blisters I would have made it without much problem. Any advice on blister care? When I coached basketball, we used some stuff called moleskin to treat blisters. I plan on looking for some tomorrow.

Four IPAs this afternoon while fishing with my neighbor. Scheduled for a 5.5 mile run this evening. I asked myself "What would Grue do?" Headed out in about half an hour. Then I'll probably have a beer or two to celebrate.

Congrats on all the debauchery. As to the blisters - that's rather alarming that the discomfort started so quickly. It might be good to stop back at the shoe store and talk to them about it. They should generally know about blisters, and they should specifically know if the fit is not actually right for you. It's possible the shoes were an appropriate change, but a big enough change that you need an adjustment period.

Go back to the store where you got them. If they did a proper fitting and they are reputable they should help you out.edit to ask if you got proper socks?

When is cybertron making their move?

signed up for another race. The Race to Wrigley on 4/14. as a big Cib fan i had to do it.

Now my first 2 races ever are on the same weekend. Now if i can keep out of the bars on saturday, ill be able to make it back to naperville for the 2nd race.

Thats awesome BnB. I need an inspiring RR now to get me thru this week.

Sounds like I need to do a little revising to my bucket list as well.

This guy is the man. Finished 3rd overall in the 40 miler, took a video camera with him, and pounded a beer at mile 35.

Great work guys.

BNB - Sounds like a great experience and can't wait for the full race report.

2YBB - Those are some great workouts. Also wanting to know about the altitude training as that has always interested me and its effects on training at lower levels. Great pictures on FB by the way. What great country you were in!

------------------

As for me, I finished the week pretty strong.

On Saturday I was tired and did not want to go out for my 6 mile recovery. I went out anyway and got them in. My legs were dead before, but alive after. I guess that is the reason for the run, but I have never really felt that much better after one. More on that in just a minute.

On Sunday I completed 20 miles. This was a great run. I felt pretty comfortable throughout and my legs really did not tire too much at the end which usually happens. To my surprise, the legs were really strong. I averaged 8:26 for all of the miles. Probably a bit faster than I should have been going, but I just felt good and did not want to slow down. Overall, I was happy with it and will put it in the books as a success.

One more thing. I have not been doing heart rate training at all, but was interested to see that I averaged 154 for the entire run yesterday. I thought this was pretty decent for me as I remember most of my previous runs being around 165 or so. I will let you guys weigh in on that if you want to. I really don't know what my max is and have never figured it out.

Have a great day all.

Put band aids on the blisters and dont pop themI have been running the past 3 weeks in Vibram 5 fingers and it has been an awesome change for me

"How much am I allowed to get?" :lmao: :thumbup:So badass. I was thinking about your race as I was miserably trudging thru my short, in comparison, trail run yesterday. What went thru your mind as you realized you were now past 26.2? That had to be a big mental hurdle.
Just curious, how much of the race had gone by when you get to that sign at the summitt

Nice 20 miler! 154 HR sounds reasonable since you did a rather brisk pace (is that about :45/mile slower than your marathon pace?), particularly since you're running tired and on tired legs.

BNB: AWESOME, AWESOME, ####### AWESOME!!!! Epic race and awesome that you finished a second time for those that made it out. Way too cool. You have trained like a beast and deserved an outing like that. Incredible!!!

So easily B. (just filling time until BnB pops in).
Looking at a two-dimensional picture I'll take B all day = hands down. Watching them run on a treadmill...A was much more entertaining and it wasn't even close.

AWESOME video!!! Great for you to be able to share your experience via his as well. Somebody should have intervened at the end though and upgraded his PBR :banned: I'll never forget the 5 mile point of my only ultra, when somebody at an aid station kept yelling out "just a marathon left to go!" I wanted to punch her. Prince: IF you had good socks on, you shouldn't be getting blisters. New shoes should virtually act fully broken in when you get them. I'd talk with the shop that sold them. 2Y: Awesome altitude workouts. I can't wait to hear how it translates to flatland. Ned: Keep plugging. Is the temp by chance a bit warmer possibly causing the HR to be up?Sho: Great to hear you got your son running  How old is he/Bentley: Asking WWGD is typically not advisable. Be careful out there. Annyoung: Too cool that you'll have your first two races in the same weekend. Sorry to hear that you are a Cubs fan though. So sorry. PMB: great 20 miler. You are primed for a sub 3:30. If conditions are right and the running Gods are in a good mood, you got this!AcerF: Git your butt signed-up already!!!_____________________________My Update:I had a great weekend of workouts. I got a 42 mile ride in 12 mph winds on Saturday averaging 20.9 mph. My goal was 21.0, and I had it until the last mile, which was right into the wind, and it was gusting pretty bad. Yesterday I did P90x Back and shoulders and followed it up immediately with a group Mountain bike ride of 3+ hours. Not sure how many miles we did, but it was Euphoric. Corona's on the Lake afterwards made it even better. I'm finally feeling some sense of being in shape and hope to keep up with the P90x workouts til swimming season. I'm now on my way to attack the elliptical again.

Regardless of everything else, an 11 bpm improvement on a 20 miler is a huge improvement!

The temps have been varying between 40-60. Seemingly no rhyme or reason for the elevated HR other than coming back from being sick. :shrug:You're a beast - doing P90x then a 3hr mtn bike ride. Kick ### stuff right there.

I am not sure what my final MP is going to be. I originally started thinking that I was going to be at an 8:00 MP, but I feel like I am picking up some speed as of late and may be more looking at 7:45 - 7:50 which would put me about :45/mile slower.I never really paid too much attention to the heart rate stuff before. Just usually mark it up as another number on my data, but I have been noticing that it has gone down over the last year or so of training. Used to definitely be around 165 for most of my runs, but have noticed it getting lower the last couple of months.

Somewhere between mile 21-22.

I did 16mi on Sat, which is the longest I've ever run. Still congested from the cold but damn I felt great from mile 12 until the end.

Looks like I have a business trip to Pittsburgh end of March which definitely has me worried. Don't know how I'm going to get in 42 miles of running in 4 days with work stuff to do. Lots of treadmill at night I guess and get as many miles as I can, try to add miles the following week.

17 Seconds: Way to add to the good news in here :hifive:

AcerFC: Giddy'up!

Bentley: Asking WWGD is typically not advisable. Be careful out there.
Disagree. Those are words to live by!
If I was a younger man there would be a better chance of your words to be true.
B is Nicky Whelan. I highly recommend looking her up on the Google.
 She's a favorite of mine.
I can't think of a better specimen  Edited to add this.

Ran 20 on Saturday at 8:18...felt easier than I expected...almost regretted not going for 22. 3 weeks to the marathon, it's time to taper. :)

Sometime next year I'll be nipping at you guys' heels. (I hope!).

Ran 15 miles last week and got off to a good start on this week. Got 5miles at 43:40. Was shooting for 44-45 minute range. I sure do get a rush from watching the seconds melt away. (thanks to whoever mentioned that)

Didn't even notice it. The struggles were all minor and early on. Just thought about how lucky I was not having to check my blood sugar every 1/2 an hour and all the people who had supported my campaign and were behind me. Mile 25 was an 8'25" pace, mile 26 was an 8'40" pace (downhill pavement). I had briefly wondered if the wheels were going to come off as I approached mile 27 / 6 hours which was my longest training run, but I was feeling my strongest as I notched the two fastest miles of the day. I suspect 26.2 was right at the rest stop and I had just passed three people walking up the hill to it. Finally was warming up and feeling my extremeties again, stowed away the jacket/gloves and drank two cups of chicken broth. We turned back onto the trail and I said to myself, time to do the work son and go catch some people. I passed three more in the next mile and then just cut loose. I knew I could walk it in now and meet my goal. The next two hours flew by...seemed like a half an hour. I think I went 5 or so miles without seeing a single soul. Just me, beautiful views, and the average pace on the watch going in the right direction in a hurry. Mile 37 was a 9'14" pace, mile 38 9'49" pace, mile 38.5 9'28" pace, and finished the last 1/8th sub 7 min pace. These were flattish type miles. I put 4 minutes into four people I caught with roughly two miles to go.The last 1/2 mile circled a small lake and the old Ernie Banks quote went through my mind..."Let's play two".

Ran 20 on Saturday at 8:18...felt easier than I expected...almost regretted not going for 22. 3 weeks to the marathon, it's time to taper. :)
Where??Also, I think I'm going to create a Google doc "upcoming races" spreadsheet for the group. It'll be a good way to keep track of what everyone's doing, results, etc. I'll do this in my "free time."

Its a shame we can't just create a group on runningahead.com.

Wouldn't help anything in terms of tracking people's upcoming races anyway.

The Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach.

Just thought about how lucky I was not having to check my blood sugar every 1/2 an hour and all the people who had supported my campaign and were behind me. Mile 25 was an 8'25" pace, mile 26 was an 8'40" pace (downhill pavement). We turned back onto the trail and I said to myself, time to do the work son and go catch some people. I passed three more in the next mile and then just cut loose. I knew I could walk it in now and meet my goal. The next two hours flew by...seemed like a half an hour. That is cool. Mine was added but it did not go in chronologically with the others.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wpXxP9cNiNUThis guy is the man. Finished 3rd overall in the 40 miler, took a video camera with him, and pounded a beer at mile 35.
 Great video. I got cold watching that. That is crazy.
This video inspired me today. Not a big deal to do a 9mi tempo run in 50 degrees with sideways rain after watching that.
 Me to, I was going to blow off my run tonight due to 45mph wind gusts. I then saw that video and thought of BnB and headed out the door. Cant say I liked it but I did it. High winds suck.
