Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

Came home from Spinning class last night and thought the new riding shorts chamois was causing problems. Realized it wasn't a hot spot or chafing but a tender, pulsing feeling near my, uhh, out door. Fearing hemorrhoid hell I got out the wife's magnifying makeup mirror and, cringing, I had a look. I don't think I've ever been so happy to see a pimple.
thanks for sharing.

:goodposting: Once again this thread has amazed me with it's direction.... and once again it involved Dash...

Any tips for running in the rain?
Your shirt will be wet, which will cause your nips to chafe unless you protect them. I recommend Nu Skin.
Body Glide or other kind of lube that holds up while wet... I use AD Diaper creme on the bike or if I've got major chafing issues up top while running.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: these things work great. Some of my best times have been in a light rain - watch your footing, wear something that won't get too heavy when wet (including light socks!), and wear a running cap to keep the rain & sweat out of your eyes.

The good thing about rain is that it will keep you cool. After about 1/2 mile or so, maybe a mile, you'll be as wet as you're going to get, so just forget about it and keep moving. The faster you go, the faster you can get out of the rain!!
Is chaffing really an issue for an hour long run?A hat is a good idea.
Chaffing CAN be an issue for an hour run - typically I'd say probably not, but water (or ample sweat) + wind can mean big trouble in short order. It's not worth risking... trust me on this. Just slap a couple of bandaids on before you leave the house and you have no worries.

GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND!!!!

Quick question about realistic training needs for a half marathon in October. Because of kids and travel for work (I have the Garmin 201 to run when I travel), I doubt I’ll have the time to fit in any semblance of the training schedules I have seen. But, I am a runner and have been for years and do get in 3 to 4 runs a week of around 4 to 5 miles.

I’ve run a 10K in 48+ minutes last fall and just brought home my first hardware from a run this past weekend, a 3.5 mile cross country race finishing 3rd in my age bracket (I’ll be 39 shortly). Conditions were awful as it had rained a ton the two days before and the track was wood chips, grass gravel and a little bit of black top. Even so, I did it in just under 23 minutes.

Anyway, could I get away with just adding in ¼ mile sprints once a week for a replacement for one of my runs and save (or even avoid) the 10+ mile runs until about 3 to 4 weeks before the race? I’m just not sure I can find the time. There is also a kids sled hill the goes up on side about 110 yards and back down at a greater pitch at about 75 yards on the back side. I have added it in to my runs in the past, would this be a good strengthen item to added in more frequently? I would plan on running it 2 times, circle the soccer field next to it and do it 2 more time for about 10 or so multiples.

I did get to run 6+ miles today w/ my wife and finished under an hour and not out of breath at all.

I guess this wasn’t so quick, but, based on the info above. What is the opinion on if I can just add a bit to my routine and finish the race in the fall (w/ a ½ decent time of around 2:15 to 2:30)? The race I am eyeing it the ½ marathon that runs in conjunction w/ the Detroit Free Press Marathon. I think it would be awesome to be able to run across the bridge to Canada and back in to Detroit through the tunnel.

Finally, wish I could keep up more with this thread as it is very motivating, but I cannot get access @ work and the evenings tend to be jammed w/ kid stuff. THANKS!!
Sounds good to me- you're running regularly, and as long as you plan on getting in a few long (10+ miles) runs you should be fine. Hills and whatever speed or strength work you can do are gravy.
:banned: When I marathon train, I only run 3x per week, to allow my legs plenty of rest time = 3 runs a week are plenty. I'd recommend that you have one pace run (short maybe 5 to 7 miles, at the pace you anticipate running the half in), one speed run (intervals/fartleks; I'd recommend half mile intervals for that distance, followed by a quarter mile rest, with at least a mile warm-up and cooldown), and gradually build up distance. Your last 6 weeks could look like this and you'd be fine:

6 weeks out: 1 pace run (6 miles), 1 interval run (6 intervals), 1 long run (9 miles)

5 weeks out: 1 pace (6/7 miles), 1 interval (7 intervals), 1 long run (10 miles)

4 weeks out: 1 pace (6/7 miles); 1 interval (7 intervals), 1 long run (11 miles)

3 weeks out: 1 pace (7 miles); 1 interval (8 intervals), 1 long run (12 miles)

2 weeks out: 1 pace (5 miles); 1 interval (6 intervals), 1 long run (10 miles)

1 week out: 1 pace (4 miles); 1 interval (4 intervals), 13.1 miles Baby!

Not a running story, but is a great display of the benifits of running. A group of guys that I used to play basketball with finally convinced me to get back out and play last night. They play from 9-11ish and so getting to bed before midnight does not happen. I usually use being to tired as my excuse. A year ago was probably the last time I played with them, and I never was able to keep up with the pace they played at for 2 hours. I was always so happy when it was my turn to sit for a bit. Last night was my first time back and I was expecting the worst, about an hour into it I was feeling great. I could run alot more up and down the court without getting exhausted and did not want to come out at any point of the night. All thanks to this tread I opened to read about some cat trying to run a 10K in under an hour. Awesome.
:lmao:
Good luck this weekend. The work has been done, so hopefully it will be an enjoyable event for you. Will check back Monday for the update.

Good luck to all from team GStrot 10k!

Race like the wind, and do your best to eject Dash's horrible image from your mind... (not working yet :goodposting: )

G-Strot; it's GO-TIME!! Make us proud. To everyone else racing (and of course G-Strot) have a blast!!!! Can't wait to hear all about 'em.

Funny, I started running recently to help me get in better basketball shape. I've read this entire thread over the past 4 days, a little at a time, great stuff everyone and very motivating. My quick background: grew up playing soccer and hoops, but never was a runner, hated it actually whenever we had to do any running and usually would end up walking most of it. Back in 2001 I decided I'd try running, and worked my way up from nothing to a 5K race on Ocean Beach here in San Francisco, did it in about 32:00 I think, but will never forget the feeling of accomplishment I had at the time just to do it. Decided I'd keep running as part of my life....then came a wedding and 11 months later a little one. Everything stopped: no basketball, no running, nothing for 3 years.About 7 months ago started playing basketball again, and a couple months back I added running back into the mix, slowly building back up from nothing again. Mostly just wanted to get in better shape so my basketball game would get better, and drop some lbs along the way. I'm down about 15 lbs in 3 months or so, still a ways to go at 5'11" 205, but on my way to a sub 2-bills weight for the first time in about 10 years. I have always run by time not distance, working my way up to 30 minutes or so. But thanks to the link here to mapmyrun.com, I mapped out a 5K yesterday and ran it at lunch. Knowing I was timing myself I definitely ran faster than I usually do, but I finished in 29:00 exactly and was pretty stoked with that!Toughest part for me is getting in more than 2 runs a week. Most weeks I play hoops once or twice for a couple of hours, and it's just tough on the legs to do anything the next day. I hope that will get better as i continue to get in better condition and lose weight. What I like about running is that it's such a challenge for me that it's easy to set goals that really stretch me, and now I find myself thinking about trying a 10K in August or September. Anyway, I plan on joining the thread here to take advantage of the same motivational factors many of you have found, knowing that you're going to come here and post what you've been up to.

San Diego Rock'n'Roll Marathon is this Sunday.

Did my level best to sabotage my efforts (months of training) last week by binge eating, smoking dope and not running.

This week I did my runs and am not binge eating.

Wish me luck.

Anyone else, other than RS, running it?

Best of luck, chaka- you and RS have any kind of side-bet going?

Any of you running vets have any thoughts/advice/direction on running in altitude (Rockies) whilst training only in the flats? In other words - if I wish to run a slow marathon in the Rockies this summer...without any training in similar altitudes...what am I gonna expect?

Good luck to you racers this weekend!

Damn Barry. It is raining too hard for me to run this morning. So here I sit feeling lazy. I am going to do my long run tomorrow morning when all this rain is supposed to be long gone.

Good luck in the races today.

OK, Barry let up enough for me to get 5 miles in. A nice slow run in 49:39. Only got rained on a little at the beginning. Also, right after my run my scales said that I weighed 188. 5. My lowest in 25 years.

He's easy to find on that list. I'll just say that he finished and let him have the pleasure of reporting his time and his experience.

I have an issue with my knee that I'm going to toss out there and see if anybody can make any sense out of.

I posted earlier that I had some achiness in both knees. I took a week or so off, and then went back to the track (soft, forgiving surface) this week. All runs were deliberately done at a nice slow comfortable pace.

3 miles on Tuesday: No problem.

6 miles on Wednesday: No problem. A little soreness toward the end of the run, but nothing I was concerned about. All pain or tenderness went away for good after taking an ibuprofen.

Day off on Thursday.

8 miles yesterday: No problem. Again, I had some soreness in my *right* knee about 4 miles in, but nothing that had me thinking about cutting the run short. In fact, the pain went away around mile 6 and I finished pain-free. No pain or soreness of any kind after the run, during the evening, or the following morning. Everything felt great.

So I go in this morning to do a simple 3-miler to close out the week. I didn't even make 200 feet before I got excruciating pain in my *left* knee. This knee had not given me any problems at all during my 8-miler yesterday, and there was no real warning that anything was wrong. I got going, and pretty much as soon as I thought to myself "Hmm, I feel a little twinge coming on in my left knee," the pain had already reached an unbearable level so that I had to stop immediately. The pain was throughout the entire knee area and not localized to any one region. As soon as I stopped, the pain completely disappeared. I messed around at the gym with stretching and cross-training and tried two more times to run. Each time I had the exact same experience: go a couple hundred feet, knee explodes in pain, stop, pain goes away.

As I'm sitting here now, I don't feel anything special in that knee. It doesn't hurt to walk. Stairs are fine. Extending my leg doesn't feel odd. Bending at the knee (like squatting) doesn't feel right and I notice a little something right on the kneecap, but that's more like "mild discomfort" than "pain," and I've never been comfortable squatting so that's not unusual for me. There's no swelling or anything around the knee anywhere.

I'm going to take tomorrow off and try again on Monday, but this is such a bizarre experience that I thought I'd run it by the collective wisdom of FBG runners. I've never even heard of an injury with these sorts of symptoms before, and I'm wondering if maybe it was just some freak one-time thing that will resolve on its own, like a nerve getting pinched or something.

I don't have a diagnosis but I think you should change your schedule just a tad. Move the Saturday run to Sunday. Following up an 8 miler with a 3 miler the next day, considering you did 9 miles on Tue-Wed, might be overtraining. You might need a little more rest. Also, and I am sure you do this but I will say it anyway just in case, pay attention to your stride and don't be afraid to shorten it if necessary. Whenever I feel any twinge of pain anywhere in my legs I consciously focus on my form and shorten my stride and the pain goes away.In my experience these types of pain arise because of tired muscles, which have more difficulty maintaining good form.Good luck.

15 out, 14:15 back... very, very slow pace as I'm upping the time 10 mins overall today (I'll up my weekday runs 5 to 25 this week) and I don't want any kind of issue with the knee. Icing it now while typing just to be safe- a little bit of soreness but nothing major.

HOT.

Going to do 3 Central Park loops tomorrow morning on the bike- nice and easy pace.

I was going to guess something along the lines of that bolded part. Your legs are probably still tired from your race and you're not keeping proper form while running. The left probably went because you were favoring the right... :pics: ... I'd see a doc before it goes too long.

If anyone knows his name, the results are posted here.

Or we can wait until he posts.
Who is covering the action on this? I got a fin that says he finishes in 57 minutes and change.
I'll bet you a million dollars that it took longer than that.
Me too, since with your hint I found him on the page. I am very interested in hearing about his experience from this morning, as I have a 10K on July 1.

I did my first one in 1:06:27 on 5/10, so you'll be fine as long as you've been training for it. You can read about it here if you want to.

What's the deal? Is he still in the med-tent? He's gotta know there's a thread full of us filling up on popcorn waiting for the news for chrissakes.

I have been running 6.29 mile training runs, my fastest is at 58:30. Starting tomorrow I am training for the half mary and will be running 7.77 miles. The 10K on the 1st should be a short run for that week. Hopefully it will work out well that week.

He's admitted that he has a life outside of FBG on the weekends, so I wouldn't expect to hear from him until Monday.

Selfish *******. :banned: I'd already set up my computer area with popcorn and lost of things to pass the time while waiting... there goes the weekend.

Just finished a 7.77 mile run in 1:20:51, that's 10:24 pace. Not too bad considering it was my longest run ever by almost 1.5 miles. I was supposed to run it yesterday but had to postpone because of the weather, though I did get in 5 miles. Big mistake, next week I am definitely going to run the long run in at least one days rest. I was struggling at about the 6 mile mark but I was able to finish strong, plus I ran the whole distance, no walking.

I hope everyone else is having as good a weekend as I am.

Great work Darrin! Going that much further than you've ever gone the day after essenially going as far as you've ever gone... :blackdot: .... but really impressive. I like doing a long run on Saturday and then a recovery run on Sunday- or doing crosstraining on Sunday.... like biking... and then you can start swimming on your off days... and then you can do some tris!

You'd think he could at least get up early on Sunday morning to keep us informed. He may have a life outside of FBG, but many of us don't.

You may be right, I may be crazy. But I really dislike swimming. I enjoy playing in a pool or even the ocean, but swimming seems too much like work. I fell pretty good right now, but I am sure that all the running will catch up to me shortly.

Back from a conference in Orlando and such ...

Great to see a couple new runners adding their stories and plans!

I, too, am eager to hear the weekend results. :morepopcorn:

IK, I have some memories of a sharp knee pain from years ago, like you describe. For me, it turned out to be worn shoes. As you worked up to and completed your marathon, did you maybe lose track of the wear and tear on your shoes?

Post-marathon: My aching quads actually were OK by Wednesday, and I could walk stairs comfortably. All the little aches and pains were gone by Thursday. I did a couple of 30 minute swims in the hotel pool on Thursday and Saturday, and got back to the pushups/situps. I'll try to get the bike out this afternoon for an hour, and then try a run Monday morning.

Just got back from the San Diego marathon. (my first)

#### ME IN THE GOAT ###!!!!

I wanted to finish in 4:22 (10min mile)

57min on the first 10k

2hours halfway (9:16 min/mile)

Held onto the 10 minute cushion until mile 20 then BAM!!! I hit the  and gave back 9 of the 10 minutes in the last 6.2 miles.

Finished in 4:21 barely held onto my 10 minute mile, but I held on and that is all I care about.

Now it's time for an ice bath and then it's time for a BBQ.

Thanks for the support.

I do not know how RoarinS did.

Great run. Beating your goal is great, even if it is only by a minute. I for one am looking forward to reading about your experience. Enjoy your BBQ and your accomplishment.
