Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

i couldn't even run that fast without the beer.

for those who don't know. here are the rules:

1. Each competitor drinks four cans of beer and runs four laps on a track

(Start - beer/lap, beer/lap, beer/lap, beer/lap - finish).

2. Beer must be consumed before the lap is begun, within the

transition area which is the 10 meter zone before the start/finish

line on a 400m track.

3. The race begins with the drinking of the first beer in the last meter

of the transition zone to ensure the comptitors run a complete mile

(1609 meters).

4. Women drink four beers in four laps (past rule lists only required

ladies to drink three beers).

5. Competitors must drink canned beer and the cans should not be

less than 355ml (the standard can volume) or 12oz (the imperial equivalent).

Bottles may be substituted for cans as long as they are at least

12 oz (341 ml) in volume.

6. No specialized cans or bottles may be used that give an advantage

by allowing the beer to pour at a faster rate. ie "super mega

mouth cans" or "wide mouth bottles" are prohibited.

7. Beer cans must not be tampered with in any manner, ie. no

shotgunning or puncturing of the can except for opening the can by

the tab at the top. The same applies with bottles - no straws or

other aids are allowed in order to aid in the speed of pouring.

8. Beer must be a minimum of 5% alcohol by volume. Hard ciders and lemonades

will not suffice. The beer must be a fermented alcoholic beverage

brewed from malt and flavored with hops.

9. Each beer can must not be opened until the competitor enters the

transition zone on each lap.

10. Competitors who vomit before they finish the race must complete

one penalty lap at the end of the race (immediately after the

completion of their 4th lap). Note: Vomitting more than once

during the race still requires only one penalty lap at the end.
:lmao: I LOVE that they list the beer drunk by competitor as part of the vital statistics of the race, next to finsih time and home-town.

I seen pictures of most of us and we're far too ugly to attract any of the footballgals in to a new runnig thread, so my vote is to leave it be (lycra or not).

As if there was a question as to whether hard cider and lemonade are beers? :thumbdown:
While Cider may not be beer, it can still kick your ### if you drink the right stuff. And easily meet the 5% standard. Exhibit A
 
Balmy weather today in NE Wisconsin with temps in the upper 30s. Ended up doing 14 miles at 8:09 pace.

Thinking about doing a lactate threshold test and getting related training advice from a company called Your Training Zone that's run by a couple fellow members of my running club. From what I understand, almost all of us run too fast when we're doing our training runs, and in doing so, we actually hurt our performance. People who have done this swear by it. The testimonials (and the logic behind the testing) are hard to argue with.

I resemble that remark. I did 11.5 miles today at a 9:10 pace. Too long, too fast, but I felt great throughout the run. The weather was crappy, drizzly and about 60 degrees.ETA - Tomorrow I am doing only 5 miles and I am keeping the pace over 9:30.

Ah, but I like the mix. And I'm getting a lot of use from the new trainer - three early morning, 45 minute sessions this week and then a one hour, 45 minute session this afternoon while watching the Mich-UCLA b'ball game.

Will be doing one at the end of January. Never knew a runner that did one, but a biker guy I know does it once a year, just to check in. Plans his training around it.That beer run sounds like the best thing ever. Something similar happens in the fall around here, but it involves going from bar to bar. 2 miles or so, 4 pit stops, I believe. Would be a blast on a track.

This morning I ran 5.8 miles at 10:17 m/m. Nice and easy. I am going to rest tomorrow and then run either Christmas morning or afternoon.

Was it tough to slow down, even with the Garmin? I have a VERY hard time backing things down like this. In fact, the only way I have found to slow things down is to run with my wife. She runs perfect 10-minute miles.

It is harder than it used to be. But the Garmin is a very effective tool to help keep a desired pace. There were a couple of times I sped up and had to run even slower.
 
Took advantage of the day off work and got in a couple of workouts already this morning. Out of bed before 5:00 to shovel the 2-foot snowdrift in front of my garage door. Left the house at 5:20 to go play basketball and played from 6:00 to 7:30. Left basketball and headed straight to the "Y" to do my 5 miles on the treadmill (averaged 7:52 pace). Back home by 8:45, and spent the next half-hour snowblowing the rest of my driveway and sidewalks.

Not a bad start to the holiday. Although I did take a knee to the thigh during basketball that doesn't hurt too bad right now but gets worse the longer I sit. Experience tells me that it's a pretty good bruise and that it's going to hurt like a SOB tomorrow!

Off soon to the in-laws to celebrate Christmas. Have a great holiday, everybody, and try to sneak in a few miles if you get a chance!

 
Best run in a long time Saturday! :lmao: My running buddies were on the injured list, so they took it easy. I ended up running by myself, and so ended up running faster than I wanted to (there was one guy who was faster than me, and the slowpokes were too slow for me...the injured didn't run as far, so I was on my own).

12miles in 1:49:27, with the first 6mi in 54:24 and the last 6mi in 55:03. :goodposting: I might have actually run it even, or possibly a negative split, but I walked through the water stops and across major streets a bit longer coming back. It was a nice crisp morning, ~40degrees if not a couple under that. Right in my zone, temp-wise.

I may have to take a week off more often. lol This week was a total ptts, skipping my Monday run because I forgot my shoes (intending to run during my daughters' cheer class), then blowing off Tuesday-Thursday due to getting home and eating dinner late (the old standby excuse - "I just ate!").

Well, that should help with the likely excesses for the next week or so :confused: I don't usually run on Mondays but since I was off work today I thought I'd head out - did 5.8 in 56:00. Now I will rest till Wednesday evening which is good because I hate running when I am dehydrated :thumbup:

Damn, Furley, you have more excuses than a pregnant nun! :) Merry Christmas, buddy, and make sure you get back out there tomorrow. The weather should be pretty decent (high around 30°, not much wind), so that's one excuse that you won't have! Personally, I'm not working tomorrow, so I'll be playing ball at 6:00 and then meeting my "running wife" at 8:00 for a leisurely 8-mile "jaunt."But now, off to the grandparents' house, and then to the parents' house.....
 
Christmas Eve with my wife's family, so today is low-key. Got in 75 minutes on the bike while watching some of Spike's Bond marathon (still not running, but at least slipped a running word in here).

Anyway, I hope everybody had a great Christmas (and managed to get at least a little bit of exercise to offset some of those extra calories). Anybody get any neat running-related gifts? I got a couple different pairs of Under Armour Cold Gear pants for running outside this winter and a couple of gift cards to ****'s Sporting Goods to buy even more running-related gear. Does there ever really come a time when you have enough??

Played basketball again yesterday morning and went out immediately afterwards for a nice, hilly 8-mile run. The weather was nice with calm winds and temps in the 20s, and it was good practice for Boston to be running hills on tired legs. Planning on doing my 6-mile speed workout this afternoon on the treadmill and then baskerball tomorrow, but no more running until my weekly long run on Saturday.

Not much to report. Ran 8 miles on the dreadmill watch football on Sunday and ran 4 miles with my wife on Xmas day. My whole family are running races on new years ee day in the afternoon. The kids are doing a mile, my wife and I a 4-miler (non competitive, no chip timing). Very cool race for the kids as they all get trophys. No more running for me before then as we are heading out in a few for Chicago for the weekend.My team got me a great gift, a gift card to the local Hanson's running store. Now I have to find something I would have otherwise not purchased (looking for suggestions).
 
It's been awhile, just spent the past 30 minutes catching up on this thread as I haven't even been to the FFA much in two-three weeks. Nice job Darrin, Steve, and everyone else.

Got myself a new Garmin 305 for Christmas! On sale for $199 on Amazon.com, took two coffee mugs full of spare change that had accumulated in my desk drawer to a Coinstar and walked away with a $121 Amazon gift certificate, which made it even sweeter. Got it on the 22nd and even though I've been fighting a brutal cold for the past week, took it out for 3, 4, and 3 mile runs over the past few days. Loving it so far, still just figuring out all the bells and whistles. Anyone have any hints on how to get better maps for it? Really liking the pace and heart rate feedback, and think that will be very helpful as I get my training started up again.

Between traveling to the midwest (a week in Chicago and Indy) and the holidays, it'd been a slow few weeks for running prior to getting ramped up again due to Garmin excitement the past 6 days. Still considering a 1/2 marathon on Super Bowl Sunday, but really need to get my long runs going over the next couple of weekends before I'd sign up for it. I ran 7.65 miles back on the 8th but haven't had a run more than 4-5 miles since then, so think it might be a little too aggressive to push that in a month, but we'll see how the next 3 weekends go.

Also looking at doing this 16K in a couple weeks, if I can bust out 7-8 miles this Sunday I'll go ahead and sign up for it next week, it just looks like a really cool run, especially considering I take the ferry by Angel Island every day but have never actually been out there. Won't be trying to set any records (that should go without saying), but just think it'd be a fun one to do.

 
I'll throw my hat in here. Long time lurker turned non-regular poster on the football side, recent lurker on the FFA side (man there are alot of hilarious threads in here). I've never done any serious running (ie any) because I've always hated it unless I was doing something else: a few years back played a ton of ultimate, and I still play tennis whenever I get the chance (twice every 3 weeks give or take). A group of long time friends (some runners some not, some younger, some older) have all decided to do the Cooper River Bridge Run 10k in April this year.

So I've got 13weeks, I'll be getting a Nano for some tunes while running (the only way I'll be able to get through it), and possibly the nike+ accessory cause it seems like a good motivational thing (seeing graphs of runs, progression, etc.), and since none of the others doing the run in april are local, I'll use it to track training progress against some others who have the same ipod/nike+ setup. And since I have no shoes, I need to go get me a pair of those this weekend as well.

I've made a rough outline of my training sched which consists of... Mon medium run, Tues weights/cycle, Wed short (fastpace?) run, Thurs rest, Fri weights/cycle, Sat long run, Sun rest. Progressing up from 1mi/1mi/2mi to 4mi/3mi/6.5mi for the main run days during he 13 weeks. I planned it out based on a schedule linked on one of the first pages in this thread. My goal is to run the race in 50minutes.

Any advice/suggestions before I start (first run on my plan is on Monday).

:goodposting: First, I have been meaning to post this for a while, I saw some gadget guy on some tech TV show that tests a lot of the fitness electronic products. His key point to the Nike device was, its great but don't fall for the scam any buy the crappy shoes that are made for it. He stated he just puts the tracking device in his sock. Take your time and do a shoe profile at a running shop. You could screw up all of your goals from the start by not buying the right shoes.It sounds like you are in good shape, so aggressive goals are good, not knowing your age, etc, I think a 50 minute 10K might be a bit of a stretch without running any other races before this one. You have plenty of time to get there, but I'd think it would do you better to try a 5K beforehand to get a feel for what these races are like (battling crowds at the start, pacing, etc). I ran my first sub 50 minute 10K this year, after about 5 tries and it took training for a 1/2 marathon to get to this level. You'll know better after running a bit to determine if you need to run faster, slower, etc and I think it is very "doable"! I wish I had focused on a set training plan like you are.Good luck!
 
I threw out 50 knowing I probably wouldn't make it (I'm guessing between 55-60 is where it ends up). I did do the 10k once 7 years ago when the group did it, didn't run a whole lot before it and finished 1:04 or something. Of course I was more active then. I'll be 29 by the time of the race. Those running range from 25-55.

Good point about the shoes... I'm frugal (some would call cheap) by nature, so if I can head out to the NewBalance store or a local runnings shop to get a pair that fit will without paying Nike prices.. I'm all about it. Thanks for the info.

I only set a plan cause I knew if I didn't, I'ld show up in April having run maybe a couple of miles the weak before, and then my lungs would have exploded by the time I hit mile 4. :hot: Not to mention, I'll never hear the end of it from some in the group if they beat me across first.

 
just ran a quick 3 in about 4-5 inches of snow (more falling as i ran)...... wearing my new Yak Trax!

makes running in the snow a LOT easier. still tricky in that much snow but a hell of a lot easier than i thought it was gonna be.

 
Heading out sometime today to run 12-14 miles, depending on how I feel. Right now, I don't really feel like running at all, because it snowed last night, and I know that 90% of people are too lazy to have cleaned off their sidewalks. Will report back....

I think the key to running nearer to an 8:10 min/mile pace (needed to get in at around 50 minutes) is having a strong enough/long enough stride. Given your tennis play, I suspect you've got good stretch and rotation through your hips and flexibility in your legs. So if you build up your running-specific muscles and aerobic base, I believe you can do this. You'll be amazed at the progress after you've built a good base of miles.

Don't worry about times for several weeks. And you might not want to push too much on that short midweek run yet (track work will be helpful later on, but get a good base first). Ultimately, some 1/4 or 1/2 mile repeats can be very beneficial for 5K or 10K runs. Most runners don't put in this effort - they run their miles and maybe speed up some, but they don't gut out some solid repeats.

I put in 9 miles this morning. The weather here has been a little warm and it was 67 at 6:45 this morning, with the humidity at 90%. Th run took about 1:25, it should have been an easy pace but I struggled a bit in the middle. Tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday I am only going to run 5 miles each day. The next half marathon is next Sunday. Which makes me think I am a little nuts. I go from not running at all, to a half marathon about a year later, and then a second half 3 weeks from the first. After this race I have a 5K on Jan 26.

I hope everyone else is doing great and looking forward to the new year.

 
Ended up doing 12 miles in 1:37:32 (8:08 pace). Felt pretty good despite running a course with 3-4 decent-sized hills.

 
10mi yesterday in 1:37. Ran the first 5mi in 52min, just taking it easy with my running buddy from a couple weeks ago (still has some sort of foot injury). She turned back at 4.5mi, so I continued with a couple of the coaches and we picked it up a bit. I was still feeling good, so I picked up even further over the last 2mi (thought I saw running buddy so I sped up to try and catch her, but it wasn't her), finishing with 8:37 and 8:05 miles, for a total return trip in 45min -- a SEVEN minute negative split! lol

I may have to try this negative split business in the marathon. lol :unsure:

Managed to turn my ankle at around 4.25mi. This could have been REALLY bad, but it's turned out to be just plain weird. I've turned my ankle many times over the years, but I manage to catch myself and quickly regain my balance before doing any damage. This time, I rolled way over and almost went down to my knee (think of the :lunge: position). I had to do the hopping/limping dance for a few strides, but I shook it off and was able to finish the remaining 5.75mi without a problem (I joked with my coach that I was hoping that the ankle pain would take away from my knee/I-T aches, but the ankle pain went away! :mellow: ). Since the run, I've been able to walk around without much discomfort, but it'll yell at me if I turn the wrong way. There's no swelling/bruising, so is it sprained or what? :mellow: I iced it some last night, and wore an ankle brace (today also), so I'm not sure what's up with it. lol

I was reminded tonight of of the most simple pleasures of running. The ground is covered with a half-inch of fresh powder and light snow continues to fall. I strapped on my Yak-Trax, left the iPod at home, and went out for a nice, peaceful 5-mile run. There's just something about running in the snow later at night when everyone else is inside at home and the only sound you hear is the sound of your feet hitting the snow-covered pavement. Easily one of the most peaceful feelings in the world. :goodposting:

Hey, 2Young. I know that I've done some marathons/half marathons fairly close together, but I don't know the exact figures off the top of my head. I do know that next year I'm planning on running the Little Rock Half Marathon on March 2, the Oshkosh Half on April 12, the Boston Marathon on April 21, and the Green Bay Half on May 18, giving me the equivalent of 2-1/2 marathons in three months.

I just finished my last run of the year and here are my totals for 2007.

1094.9 miles at an average pace of 9:46 minutes per mile.

181 hours 44 minutes and 19 seconds of running.

154320 calories burned while running.

From January's 57.5 miles at 10:48 m/m to December's 141.76 miles at 9:21 m/m, it has been a great year.

The only time I had to sit through an apparent injury was in the second week of January.

I want to wish all FBG's a Happy New Year and a great 2008. And a big :X to the guys that post in tis thread, you have been a great help with workouts, mechanics, and keeping me motivated.
