Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

Before the last 1/2 marathon I think I ran too hard in the last week before the race. This time I ran 9 miles yesterday at a decent pace and 5.2 miles today at a 10:02 pace. Tomorrow I am only going to do about 3.75 at an easy pace, then Tuesday only about 3 miles at an easy pace. Wednesday I am going to walk, jog for 30 minutes. That is all. Last time I ran my last run on Thursday. I am hoping that all of this will leave me with better legs during the last 3 miles. After this race on Sunday I am going to change my training a bit to include at least one workout a week of out-and-backs. Maybe even work on my legs a bit in the gym.
I am very interested to hear how your body responded to running two 1/2 this close together (and from others that have done it). I am running one the 1st wek of April & then again the 1st week of May next year. I think you are being very smart in backing down this time around.
Todays run was 3.8 miles at a 9:48 pace. It ended up being a little faster than I originally planned, but I felt so good this morning I had to struggle to keep it that slow. I think yesterdays slow 5 miler really helped my legs recover a bit. I don't understand how it works, but my legs felt better today than they did yesterday during the run.

The entire family and I are running what I'd guess would be the final race for this thread in 2007. My wife & I are doing a 4-miler with the kids running a 1-miler. We received about 3" of snow overnight & more is expected today so I am not sure how course conditions will be. It'll be interesting what I can do today as I have transformed myself in to quite the tub of goo since Thanksgiving. I was back on track a bit, but spent Thursday through yesterday in Chicago eating way too much & sleeping way to little.

It will likely be tomorrow before I'll get a race report in here as the race isn't until 4pm and we are hosting New Years Eve @ our place (like I need to eat & drink more). I'll have no problem picking a resolution or 10 for the new year.

I echo Darrin's sentiments, to all a happy new year & thanks for all the help & support!!!!

To my biker buddies ---- I'm now clipless! Just got some Speedplay pedals (the Frog) put on my bike. :goodposting:  Put the bike back on my new indoor trainer (Blackburn mag) and found the pedals very easy to use. Looking forward to putting in a lot of training time through the winter as I patiently wait to start running again. The ankle/foot has been feeling very good, but I won't push it.

Best wishes to all as we head into the new year!

Now we're talking! Nice pick with the Speedplays, too (I've got 'em as well). Once you get back outdoors, you'll really feel the difference in the amount of power you can generate all the way through your stroke... that is, when you're not falling over at stop signs. Happy New Year everybody :bag:

I'm still pretty much 0-December in terms of any kind of workout. :ptts: .... :excited:

Happy New Year!

Anybody else already do their first miles in 2008? I hit the gym as soon as it opened at 8:00, and to my surprise, it actually wasn't overcrowded with all the well-intentioned "new year's resolution" people. I did about 8 miles on the treadmill at just over 7:30 pace, did a few leg raises, and then headed home. Made myself an egg white omelet and sat down in front of the TV to watch the Badgers in the Outback Bowl.

The worst part for me is that I'm getting LASIK next week Thursday, so I can't wear my contacts anymore before the surgery. Running with glasses sucks! If I was running outside, I could probably just go without, because my vision isn't TOO bad, but when I'm running at the gym, I need to be able to read the words on the TVs, so I'm pretty much stuck.

:excited: Happy :X 2008

Woo am I moving slow after a late night last night. The first miles of my 1,000 in ’08 goal is going to have to wait.

New Years Eve Race Report: Great, great event for all and amazing that it drew over 1,200 people. The kids 1-miler was first. Neither of my kids had run any type of race before, but both did quite well. My 9-year old so knocked it out in just over 11 minutes and my 11-year old daughter did it in just under 13 minutes. An 11-year old boy won the race in 6:26!!! Every kid that ran received a very nice, 12” tall trophy. The kids were geeked about the event and can’t wait for their next chance to do another.

As for us old folks, we had a good 4-mile run too. Lining up with a buddy of mine, we talked about what we wanted to do. Neither of us have been doing all that much running (and way too much eating & drinking) lately so we aimed for 8-minute miles. We thought going sub 30 would be cool, but not doable. It was cold, damp and windy, but the crowd’s energy was great. We shot out at about a 7:15 pace for the first mile. Miles 2 & 3 were against the wind so we tailed a bit and then tried to pick it up at the end. We came real close to the sub 30 mark, running in 30:38. I was certainly gassed at the end, but felt pretty good all things considered. My wife rocked out a sub 36-minute time which was real good for her too.

I ran 3.1 miles this morning. I took it easy for the first half and then ran my 10K pace for the last half. Everything felt great and I am ready for the 1/2 on Sunday. Tomorrow I am doing a walk/jog with Steve's better half. Then I am resting until Sunday morning.

Yep...did 6.3 miles in 62 mins at 7:40am. According to my logging software, I am on track for 195 miles this month :goodposting: Happy New Year to all and may everyone reach their goals in 2008!

Hey, 2Young. I know that I've done some marathons/half marathons fairly close together, but I don't know the exact figures off the top of my head. I do know that next year I'm planning on running the Little Rock Half Marathon on March 2, the Oshkosh Half on April 12, the Boston Marathon on April 21, and the Green Bay Half on May 18, giving me the equivalent of 2-1/2 marathons in three months.
Gruecd, 2Young, I ran two marathons five weeks apart and two halfs six weeks apart last year. Assuming a typical training program where you build up to a long run of 20mi (10mi for a half) and then taper to raceday, what I did was to consider the first race of each pair to be my long run, then tapered down to the 2nd race. I don't know if there were any truly measureable results, but I PR'd in the 2nd marathon as well as the 2nd half (first half was a PR as well).Your mileage may vary. :missing:

I found this for those of us who have no idea what a carb is.

Plus the whole site is interesting.

http://www.runningplanet.com/training/glycemic-index.html

Diets that decrease and in some cases eliminate carbohydrates have become extremely popular in the past couple of years. Just look in the diet section of your local bookstore. It is filled with dozens of books telling you that carbohydrates is the greatest nutrition evil of our time.

Carbohydrates are not evil. They are necessary for energy production and general health. Carbohydrates supply the needed energy to keep your heart, brain and vital organs operating. However, these types of diets do have a basis in fact. Some carbohydrates cause you to store fat.

Runners Forum

Doesn't seem like there are many posters on their forums, we would probably overwhelm their servers.

I am going to change my training from afternoons to early mornings but in doing so I will have a time constraint and will need to be done with each run within an hour on week days. I currently run my long run on weekends so that will not be a problem. I am planning on running 3 times during the week and need to know which workouts are best to do for my time frame. I was thinking of making one day a speed (at least 1/2 marathon pace throughout) day, another fartleks, and the third a basic (slow) training day. Any suggestions?

is there a good way to get the lungs back in shape after along layoff outside of just getting out there and running? I thought my lungs were fixin to xplode when I hit 1mi yesterday. :/

Hey anborn! The key is baby steps. Slowly increase your mileage (no more than 10% per week) and only increase speed when not increasing distance. Your lungs will get stronger with each run = don't get discouraged!

thx for the info. I decided to put on the new shoes and go again tonight. I found 1mi much easier on the lungs today, than yesterday (i also took a lil slower pace). not near the recovery time that yesterday had. I think thats a good sign. another mile on sched. for tomorrow.

Hey Darrin. I'm a 3-day a week runner. I run long on Sundays, dead mile on Tuesdays (medium/short) and speed (usually intervals) on Thursdays. A great way to create a plan is to use Runner's World's Smart Coach. If you input "moderate" for how hard you want to train, it will most likely give you a similar 3-day a week schedule, and will tell you what pace and distance to run each day.

Darrin- sounds like a great plan for you. I was also a 3x week runner this seaon, with one tempo (or easy, after a previous longer run), one speed/hill, one long. That 4th run you have planned should be great added conditioning (that I definitely felt I missed for my race). We've got the nanny again tomorrow, so I'll try and WILL get out for an easy 3.

eta: #### that- I need to get back on a schedule, which is best started immediately.

Um, that's what my bike shop recommended (smaller store, with a good selection on things, but they carry what they prefer to sell - not everything for the sake of everything). They said the Speedplays are nice because they allow some "play" in the movement (not as hard on the ankles/legs) and they're easy to engage and release. The latter is certainly true - I had absolutely no trouble on my first attempts (admittedly indoors on the trainer, but still).I don't know the comparison with the Zero's and X's.

The Frog is a MTB type cleat that allows you to clip in if it's all muddy. A bit larger platform as well. Sort of a strange choice, but less pricey than the traditional road styles.

:) Still not over this damn cold, in fact I think I got a new one as it moved from my head down to my chest last Friday after feeling better for 12 hours or so. So I didn't do anything over the weekend or Monday, but yesterday started to feel a little better and couldn't take not playing with my new toy (Garmin 305) any longer and headed out for what was planned to be an easy 3-4 miles. (for Floppo) Drove to Ross and ran up to Phoenix Lake, and once I got up there I just wanted to keep going. After 3 miles and with the Garmin on felt comfortable heading up a trail I had never been on, and it turned out to be one long, big hill. Not knowing if it would ever loop back around, I finally turned around after 3/4 of mile, it was a killer. By the time I got back to my car I had put in 7 miles and over 2300 ft of total elevation gain, Floppo, you can see the run (and get homesick) here.

Little sore today, but feeling like the cold is on it's way out and good to have 7 miles in the bank for 2008 already!

That 3-day training sounds like a plan. At the moment, I only have next week's PF Chang's and November's San Antonio marathons on the docket. PF Chang's is pretty much the final race of 2007, and San Antonio is more like a tune-up for the Goofy Challenge two months later. I need something to get me from January to November (well, at least August-September, prior to ramping up training for November), and other than a possible June marathon, a 3-day schedule might just be the ticket. :)

I started doing some core training last evening, I am now doing 100 crunches each night before bed.

Anyway, I did about 35 minutes of a walk/jog this afternoon, about 2 miles total.

got out there tonite. got a nano for christmas. gb not having to listen to myself talk anymore. :lmao:
But how do you keep those #@#@#@# ear buds in your ears? Ran 5.8 this evening in decidedly chilly weather - 40F  Still, probably the best I have felt since the Half a few weeks ago - just in time for the next Half on Sunday :lmao:

You ran outside last night? Damn. Wind chills were in the single digits, but I thought it felt even colder than that. This morning it was -14° with the wind chill, and I saw three people outside running on my way to work. No way in hell... I wussed out yesterday and did my five miles on the treadmill. I'll hit the gym again today for my weekly speed session, but I'm looking forward to getting back outside for my long run this weekend. Saturday it's supposed to be a high of 35° and a low of 33°, which is almost shorts weather. :tfp: Planning on going a little longer this weekend (probably 14 miles), because I probably won't be running at all next weekend after having LASIK on Thursday and then going to the Packer playoff game on Saturday.

By the way, here's my NFC playoff prediction. Washington goes to Seattle and beats the Seahawks, and the Bucs beat the Giants in Tampa. Washington will then beat Dallas (again), and the Pack will trounce Tampa at Lambeau. Pack hosts NFC Championship and beats the Redskins, setting up a rematch of Super Bowl XXXI against the Pats.

But how do you keep those #@#@#@# ear buds in your ears? ;)
I bought a Nano in December, and the ear buds work just fine for me. :coffee:

At first, I thought you were saying that it was -40°, and I was like  , this is one tough SOB. And then I realized that your negative sign was really just a dash, and I said to myself, "Wow, maybe he should change his name to SallyUK." ;)

Windchill of about -2 this morning as I began my second run of the new year. Huge difference from temps in the mid 40s on New Year's Day. By the way, I was the only idiot running outside in my neck of the woods today.

Not now Lumbergh, I'm kinda busy....:playing tetris: love that movie. Thanks for the welcome. I'm new to this thread. I don't know how I missed it over the years but it's nice to see that not all posters in here are like the Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons. My neck of the woods is New Jersey. I used to run a lot, then had kids and put on enough weight to become disgusted with myself so I started up again. I've been running pretty regularly now for about 3 years. My big race was a 15K each year. Last year I threw in a Half just for ####s and giggles. This year I am going to bite the bullet and run my first marathon.

Awesome. I've run three marathons, and I'll be running my first Boston this April. The first one is truly a life-changing experience. Which one are you doing?

After running a total of zero miles in 2007 I'm trying to get back into it. I have been an on again off again runner the past 10 or so years. had to stop a few times due to injury, other times stopped while on vacations and never got started again. '07 was a complete waste and I'm now in the worst shape of my life. I'm 38 yrs old, 5'10" 194 lbs, and hope to run a marathon before I'm 40, perhaps Boston in 2009. If I do run a marathon I want to go into it with a chance to run a sub 4 hr. race. I'd love to build a solid base throughout this year then start a marathon program at the end of the '08.

Ran 3 miles at 9:00 pace on a treadmill in my basement this morning. First half mile was a struggle but got into a decent groove and didn't feel that bad overall. Nice start to the day.

I'll probably do NY because its not too far away and all of my marathon buddies say its the best one to run for your first time (atmosphere, organization, fun, etc.) They say you should never worry about your time for your first (no idea what to expect, etc.) or for NY (too hilly and too crowded) so this way I can enjoy myself.

Congrats on Boston. Qualified after 3 marathons. Not too shabby. My one crazy marathon friend has been trying for a few years now and can't get over the hump. He missed out by about 2 minutes last year and it's been killing him ever since.

Hey, Nigel. Welcome to the club, and congratulations on your decision to get back on the horse, so to speak. You do realize, however, that unless you plan on raising money for charity or getting some kind of sponsor's exemption, you do need to qualify to run Boston, correct? At your age, this would mean that you would need to run a 3:15 marathon sometime prior to April 2009.

I could never qualify for Boston. Thankfully I know a few people at John Hancock who can get me a number should I deem myself in shape enough to make a go of it come the end of the year.

Thanks. I needed to run 3:10 (really anything under 3:11, so 3:10:59 or better) to qualify, and I ran 3:10 on the head at Green Bay. Fifty-nine seconds to spare!I can't imagine getting so close (like your friend) and then falling short. Absolutely gut-wrenching, I'm sure!

Don't do it, man! I know people at Hancock, too, and I actually had the application in my hand to run the race in 2007, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it that way. I never thought that I could qualify for Boston, either, but now that I have, I'm sure that it will be well worth the wait!

I agree with you to some extent. If you are fast enough so that you could qualify (though some hard work) then you have to earn it. But if you're never going to be able to even come close to qualifying then I think it's fair to use your connections. It seems that for many people the fact that they qualified for Boston is a greater achievement than running the race itself.

I could never qualify for Boston. Thankfully I know a few people at John Hancock who can get me a number should I deem myself in shape enough to make a go of it come the end of the year.
I will never be fast enough to run a 3:15, won't happen. I will probably only run one marathon in my life, and if I do it will be Boston where I live. My buddy from HS works for Hancock and runs every year. He's been trying to get me to run it for years and I hope to do so next year if I can prove to myself that I can stick with this. I have the utmost respect for those who qualify but I won't feel too bad about doing it this way.

HaHa!! Although I didn't do the actual birthing, I suffered plenty during the 36 hours of labor leading up to the birth of our first.

That's actually how my wife got INTO running, she wanted to get rid of the baby weight.

She talked about it during her second pregnancy and reminded me that I used to run (wife code for you're getting a little heavy there buster)

I started running the next day and have kept it up ever since.

So it looks like there's a nice variety of runners in here. Should be a cool thread.

You ran outside last night? Damn. Wind chills were in the single digits, but I thought it felt even colder than that. This morning it was -14° with the wind chill, and I saw three people outside running on my way to work. No way in hell... :towelwave:
tough it out, Suzie!i haven't run indoors yet. hell i ran last week when it was snowing!

I used to run a lot, then had kids
 Dang, Peter, that's more impressive than SteveUK running in the - 40F chill down in Jax  (and Darrin starting core work  )!

Nice to have you and Nigel joining in as we all start to gear up for the 2008 season. :hifive:
It's not my fault you guys are all dumb enough to live in freezing climates. And, running in 40F IS more impressive than having kids - but thats just because I put a very low value on procreating  :hophead:

I thought this'd be a good time to throw back out some good advice I got here that I have forgotten to heed as of late. Last summer someone gave me the advice to add walking in to my mix the day after my long run. I am a three day a week runner too and found that when I did a walk after my Sat or Sun long run I felt much better and could get back to a good run the next day or day after. While my schedue is a bt of a mess, I did 8 1/2 miles yesterday on the treadmill and my shin and kness ached a bit so I walked two more tonight and feel much better. Wind chills are below zero, but the forecast over the weekend puts the temps near 50 so I am looking forward to a good long outdoor run!!!

On another note, this month's Runner's World has to very good topics relevant to what has been batted around recently. ONe on cold weather running and another on ab work that touches on all of the core.
