Ran a 10k in June (1 Viewer)

Sunday morning, I put on my hat and gloves and ran 10.3 @ 9:29 pace - average temp was 44 and a bit of a nasty wind at times.
:lmao: :lmao: That's t-shirt and shorts weather!!!
<_<
Well actually, it is! It was ~45 at the start of my marathon last week (geez, it's been over a week already?! :o ), and I was in tshirt/shorts. :D
I think 45 to 50 is ideal!
75 to 80
For hanging out 75 to 80 = ideal. To race = not so much.

5 miles today at a nice 9:21 pace. This was the last run before the race on Saturday. The Daytona 5K will mark the first anniversary of my first race. While I don't expect a personal best, I am almost assured of beating last years time of 29:58. Today I got in my copy of Running- the sacred art. It looks to be an interesting book about running and the spiritual life. I am hoping that this book will help me to enjoy running even more.

Maybe it's because I grew up in WI, but most of my PR's have occurred when the temp is near 50

Update:

I did my 4.5 miles last night. I had a late meeting last night and ended up running a little after 9, but I really felt like I needed to get this run in before my 7 miles on Saturday. Everything went well. Nothing to report, so I guess I am just checking in.

Good Luck with your run this weekend Darrin.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THREAD!!!

:pickle: :headbang: :hifive: :towelwave: :banned: :goodposting:  :excited:   :suds:  :bowtie: :hey:
My thanks to everyone that posted in this thread over the last year. It has helped me in technique, training drills, and motivation. A special thanks to GStrot for accepting the challenge in the first place, and then starting the thread. Tomorrow I start my second year of running and racing, I hope to have many , many , many others. At least till I am as old as Tri-man. God luck everyone, even you Steve.

D, just clicked on your race link for today and, as a closet NASCAR fan, I have to say that I am very jealous of where you get to run today (and that it is outside and not on a freaking treadmill). My first official "run" in 2008 will be up 70 stories of the Detroit RenCen. Similar to the Hustle Up The Hancock, there are event all over the country the weekend of 2/23, 2/24. It appears to be a well coordinated event benefiting the American Lung Assn. Each racer gets a personal page with why they are doing this and a tally of donations & pledges. Because I am all about meaningless goals, I set a time to beat at 15 minutes. I never tried anything like this before, have no idea if this is realistic, but need the motivation. I may have to join LungeFest 2008 to get ready for this event.

It was real cool running on the speedway. I finished in 23:57.9, just 6 seconds off of my personal best. I was really surprised that I was able to beat 24:00 minutes, as almost all of my training lately has been for longer distances. Sorry, no pics today as my camera died. If you look through all the results you will find my wife there also. She started and finished her first ever 5K this morning. I am so proud of her. She finished in 56:52.9.

A 70 story run up stairs sounds insane. Good luck with that.

I hope everyone has had a successful Saturday.

It's partly fun running a 5K on the speedway...and partly not! Of course, it's a great setting but when you are puffing down the back straight you can see just how far you have to go....and you can hear the announcer as the fast guys finish. Today, I heard him announce 17:47...18:00...18:30...19:00 ad nauseum :blackdot: But no complaints as I finished in 22:57 today (previous best 5K was 23:25). Came in 9th out of 34 in my age group and 98th out of 626 overall

My wife also took part in the 5K this year (having done the 2M walk last year) and using a jog 2 mins/walk 2 mins method she finished in 49:28 :(

Or to put it another way my wife and I beat Darrin and his wife by 8:24

I finished 122nd out of 626 overall and 21st of 64 in age group. I lost out on 20th by 1/100th of a second, and 18th by a second and a half. If I had been in a less competitive age group, like, I dunno, just for fun, let's say Steve's age group :P , I would have finished 10th. Youth is always penalized. ETA: For the record, I still would have finished behind Steve no matter which age group I was in.

Nice race guys. Sounds like a fun event.

I did my 7 mile fun today. It felt great and I am confident that I will be able to get my 8 miles in next week. If the weather continues to improve at this rate, I just may do next week's run outside. I do not mind running on the treadmill, but with a "hilly" half marathon to prep for I will need to start running outside.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Oh, and Happy Belated Birthday thead!

In addition to Happy Birthday, this thread is 13th when sorting the topic list by number of replies.

A couple of threads that are higher on the list and are still receiving replies deal with beer.

Were having a heat wave here with temps in the high 20s & wind chills in double digits for the first time in over a week. Cabin fever got the best of me yesterday and even though there was 2 or 3 inches of new snow on the ground, I got out for a real good run yesterday. I used the Merrell trail runners and had little problem in the snow. Did just over 6 miles with an average speed of 9:32. My thighs are achy a bit, I am guessing from slipping just a little when I torqued. The snow made for awesome scenery. I ran along Lake St Clair for about 3 of the miles and saw a couple of freighter out in the snowy haze.

I have a gear review. I wanted a new way to carry water. Last fall I bought a hand held water bottle that I found annoying. I picked up an Amphipod Run Lite 4 belt: http://www.amphipod.com/8400/8400.html I am quirky as heck about what I wear, so I was worried I’d hate the feel of a belt. But, I test drove it yesterday and found I didn’t even notice I was wear it. I used 2 of the 4 bottles, which was one of the reasons I bought this one as you can mix and match bottles. The pouch is perfect too. It is large enough to fit my Blackberry, again, without noticing it was there. The only thing I didn’t like was that the water started to freeze during the run. I think I am going to really like this. When I do longer runs, I’d typically try and turn at the house around half way. This will allow me to just take the Garmin and go run. I may even wear it at times just for the pouch and belt. I also picked up a shuffle this year and haven’t been able to find a good place I like to clip it. I had it on the belt yesterday too.

I have also been wondering, for a while, the level of aches & pain you all have and want to see if I am normal (at least in terms of the aches & pains). I tend to be sore after my longer runs and achy in the mornings just about every day. If I threw out a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being “I feel great, best shape of my life, like when I was in my teens – playing high school sports, 5 being “I notice its there, but can pop a few Advil and feel better” and 10 being “hmmmm, I better call and go see the Doc on this one”, I’d like to know how you all feel. You guys a logging a lot of miles and I’d guess there are levels of pain being dealt with. For me, I am almost 40, have a bunch of lingering sports injuries and have had both my feet operated in the past. I would say I am normally dealing with a level of ache in the 3 to 4 range. After my weekly long run (if I get one in) I am more in the 4 to 5, up to a 6. I usually skip the Advil as I don’t like to mask pain when I can, unless something is swelling. I am still dealing with a tendon issue with my foot, so that is around a 7 this morning (but was a 10 back in December and I did see the Doc). I don’t think I’ll ever feel like a 1 or 2, no matter if I took off a week or two or not. So, how do you all feel and is an average level of aches & pains in the range of almost popping the Advil normal (taking age, etc in to consideration)?

Lastly, Happy B-Day Thread. Before this, a 10K was the longest I had run and a 1/2 marathon was something I admired other people for doing. Thanks to all here who helped me realize a huge life goal!

Being only 5 minutes or so after those horses sure isn't that bad!! Your post made me think of the 4 mile beach run I did a few years ago down your way. I swear it seamed like someone was moving the pier further away from me as I tried to finish. Didn't you have the Race with Donna 1/2 marathon on your race schedule up in Jacksonville? Did you guys decide to opt out of that one?

Don't talk to me about Beach runs  We did a couple last summer and they were awful! Never again. The Race with Donna Half was tentative at best and we decided to give it a miss ( I don't think Darrin is in a hurry for another Half just yet).

This morning I did a 10.3 run in about 1:38 in my new Brooks Adrenaline 8's which I bought yesterday. It still amazes me that I can now buy new shoes put them on for the first time and run 10 miles without any problems at all.

We ran the Jacksonville Bank Half and the Deleon Springs Half. We never planned to do the Donna run.

After my long runs I have a few muscle aches, but they usually go away after a few hours. I don't know if you checked out those crazy warm up exercises I posted last week, but I have to advise to NOT try them. I did them once and managed to do something to my Achilles area. It was not bad enough to stop me from running, and the two days I rested before Saturdays race seemed to finish up the healing, but it was uncomfortable for about a week. Overall I have relatively few aches and pains, but I may not be the best person to judge by as I only started doing athletic things after I turned 41. So I have nothing lingering from my youth. This morning was a 10.3 mile run in 1:38:30, not too bad after the race yesterday. Tomorrow is a rest day, then back to it Tue- Fri with intervals on Wednesday.

I dunno, when I clicked the whole run came up.

Hey, Darrin, congrats on a nice run!

For me, it's less than three months to Boston!!!! As 2Young pointed out, temps here in the Upper Midwest soared into the low 20s yesterday, facilitating a nice, strong 13.1 mile training run at 7:53 pace. Finished out the training week this morning with a quick 4-miler at 7:38 pace.

Things are coming along nicely, and next weekend I'll be doing my first 16-miler of this particular training cycle, hoping to average somewhere around 8:15-8:30 pace.

Good training for many of you, and good racing for Darrin and Steve! But Steve, when we talk about how fast we've done things with our wives, being fast isn't always the best thing, if you get my drift.

Well I'm pleased to say that on Saturday I actually jogged about 3/4 of a mile! I was up at Wisconsin-Oshkosh watching my son's volleyball tournament, and jogged around a bit attempting to locate their campus swimming pool. Pool was closed, but the light running felt good AND my feet are none the worse for it. In fact, the feet actually feel pretty good! I'll pick up some new shoes soon and start working some running back into the mix.

2Young - Until my foot pains during this past, long season, I really didn't have much pain at all ...maybe a 2 or 3 during the balance of the day after a long run, but that's about it. The foot pains this fall and into the winter reached a level of 5-8 on your scale, though I just deal with it - I've never been in the habit of taking pain pills. The cold soaks after long workouts helped a lot this past season. I attribute a lot of this to the year-round support work (strength and flexibility training), which I believe keeps me rather loose and limber. Or maybe I'm just lucky.

another 5 miles today. I thought it was an off day today, but I noticed that I will have no time tomorrow to run and Tuesday will be tough to get one in also. So I will move the off day to tomorrow and I ran today. I finished my 5 miles in a few seconds over 45 minutes, so I was happy with that pace.

2young, I am still a novice at running so I am sure the vets will have better info, but I do not really have much pain at all. I had my long run yesterday and was tired/sore about 2 hours after I had finished and could feel it in my muscles for the rest of the day. This morning I woke up and felt great. My legs were a little tired the first mile of my run today, but after that they felt great. The only other thing I notice is from time to time my back will be sore. That is more because of the extra 10 or 15 pounds I carry.

Nice race Darrin and Steve! Of course reading this stuff just reinforces how damned slow I am!

I'm trying to get faster! I did 5K in 28:37 last Tuesday, coming close to the 9:00 mile mark. Did some speedwork on the treadmill on Friday, doing 2 of the 3 miles alternating 200 m of 10:00 pace with 200 m of 8:30 pace.

Got out and did my long run during a break in the rain yesterday (we've gotten around 6 inches in the past 3-4 days), although the last couple of miles it started coming down again. Went out with the goal of doing at least 7 miles, and keeping it relatively flat to give myself a break from the hills and trails I've done the past few weekends. At right around 7 miles I felt pretty good so instead of heading the final .2 back to the start, I kept going and got in another 2 for a nice 9 mile run. Finished right at my normal 10:00 pace, finishing in 1:30:10. Also happens to be 2:00 faster on a similar course than the only other 9 mile run I've done, back on 1/5, so that feels pretty good.

2Young, my legs are definitely sore after longer runs, and often sore the last few miles during them, usually in my knees. Afterwards, I'm probably around a 4 for the rest of the day, and the next day probably a 2. That's part of why I rarely run on consecutive days, although losing another 10-15 pounds would probably help both during and after. I do tend to take Advil after a long run, more for the anti-inflammatory aspects than pain management, as it really isn't that uncomfortable.

It's partly fun running a 5K on the speedway...and partly not! Of course, it's a great setting but when you are puffing down the back straight you can see just how far you have to go....and you can hear the announcer as the fast guys finish. Today, I heard him announce 17:47...18:00...18:30...19:00 ad nauseum  But no complaints as I finished in 22:57 today (previous best 5K was 23:25). Came in 9th out of 34 in my age group and 98th out of 626 overall

My wife also took part in the 5K this year (having done the 2M walk last year) and using a jog 2 mins/walk 2 mins method she finished in 49:28

Youth Sloth is always penalized. ETA: For the record, I still would have finished behind Steve no matter which age group I was in.
Fixed ;)
lol! Great runs Steve and Darrin and their Mrs.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm predicting that Darrin will beat Steve in one of these this year.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THREAD!!!

    ;)     :suds:  :P :hey:
My thanks to everyone that posted in this thread over the last year. It has helped me in technique, training drills, and motivation. A special thanks to GStrot for accepting the challenge in the first place, and then starting the thread. Tomorrow I start my second year of running and racing, I hope to have many , many , many others. At least till I am as old as Tri-man. God luck everyone, even you Steve.

I was able to post the garmin data from yesterdays race. The cool part is that it is google earth format. I hope the link works.Daytona 5K Garmin Data
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Advil/Motrin are certainly my friends. I'm typically achy after all long runs, speed runs, interval bike rides, etc. I'm even achy if I give my 2 year old too long of a horsey back ride, or if I take out the garbage wrong! For longer runs in particular, I have a 2 day minimum recovery. I'm most achy in my calves after any speed training, and my knees and calves for long runs and rides. I do have the benefit of having a wife that massages me after all long runs, and I highly advise that you gently massage (moving the toxins away from the inflamed area) by yourself if you need to.

My tip for the day: My wife is currently learning hydro therapy, and we tried this one last night. As a substitute for ice baths, you can make your own ice packs by mixing 2 parts water with 1 part rubbing alcohol (this is to remove the lactic acid from the muscle to allow fresh/clean blood to rush to the area). For my calves we used 3 cups water and 1.5 cups alcohol, and put them into ziplock freezer bags (half the solution in each and DOUBLE bag them!). Throw them into the freezer and they'll turn slushy. When icing you should go through the following sensations: cold, pain, aching then numbing. Once you feel numb (usually about 20 minutes) the ice has done its job. You can ice 1x per hour as needed.

To help with circulation you can alternate between heat and cold by using either hot water (105 to 110 degrees) for 3 to 5 minutes then use cold (the packs mentioned above) for 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Rotate back and forth 4-5 times to get better blood circulating.

Speaking of aches and pains, here's my training update:

Yesterday I completed a 21 miler, which featured some hill work. This is my first successful 20 mile+ run in more than four years ( ) I ran the whole thing with an average pace of 8:54, with my slowest mile being mile 1 at 9:00, and my fastest being mile 18 at 8:47. My HR stayed below 160 all the way through mile 13, peaked after mile 18 at 171, ended up at 165 (for an average of 158). Immediately after the run, I drank a protein shake, took a shower, and the Mrs. gave me a full-body massage, paying most attention to my calves. Last night I then tried our new ice packs out for approximately 25 minutes, right before bed.

This morning, my pain is about a 6 on the scale above, and I feel fairly mobile. No Motrin today, as I want to know how bad my legs are. Tomorrow I'll do a slow 2 miles, and will hopefully do my final interval workout on Thursday (1 mile warm-up, 1 m @ 7:12, .5 mile slow...4x, then 1 mile cool-down). My final long run (22 miles) is planned for next Sunday, and will be slower, and on a mostly flat route. Then it's taper time!!!!!!!

Edited to add: Here's a link to the run I did. I cut-off a mile from the very end (at mile 19 there's a new road into our complex that isn't available yet). You can see the elevation from the run, by clicking the "display elevation" link on the left hand side.

Speaking of aches, I'm having a weird situation going on. Perhaps it's just coinkydink, but weird just the same. I haven't run at all in the past two weeks, my usual post-marathon take-a-month-off rest period. Today (perhaps beginning last night a little), my I-T is aching some. It rained all day yesterday, so I'm wondering if I'm having one of those it-aches-every-time-it-rains types of injury, and I'll have to deal with this for the rest of my life. :goodposting: On the other hand, I helped my mom put some of her stuff into storage on Saturday, and I probably walked a couple miles going back and forth from the house to the van and then the van to the storage unit (65+ "banker's boxes" that she uses to store her knitting yarn, etc).

I have a doctor's appointment on Wednesday (yay ART!! ;) ), so I'll be sure to mention this to him.

Anyone think they could complete the Krispy Kreme Challenge? Winner this year did it in 31 minutes. :o
I could not touch the 31 minutes, but am confident I could complete this in around 50 minutes. I am an average runner, but an excellent eater.
31 minutes is unreal ...maybe 13 minutes for a very fast runner, eat a dozen donuts in, say, 4 minutes (20 seconds each), then 14 minutes back. Wow. But it'd be fun to try!

If that was per doughnut people could die eating a dozen in a sitting.

I'd think it would be important not to have to be running flat out to do those times if you are hoping to devour a dozen doughnuts. I'd say you'd need to be almost elite standard to do those times as well as eat the dozen.Maybe this will be my new training regime :)

He should do. Our training is fairly similar and I think he is more of a natural runner than I am. Of course, he has already beaten me in some races last year.

Weird weather pattern today in NE Wisconsin; 36° this morning, but by 6:00 tonight we're supposed to have below-zero wind chills!

Figured I better get out ahead of the storm, so I hit the road this morning at 4:55 for an 8-miler at a relaxed 8:10 pace. What was neat is that I ran every single mile within 5 seconds of my average pace, and I'm usually not that consistent.

Planning five miles and basketball tomorrow, six miles on Thursday, and then my first 16-miler of this training cycle on Saturday.

Real similar down here in TX. It was 71 (98% humidity) :lmao: this morning, and is supposed to drop to 34 tonight. I was sweating before I left my driveway for this morning's run.

We had this weather in the Twin Cities yesterday. Nice all day and then it turned down right nasty. It is freezing out today. Such is life in January and February.
