Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

I know some meds are not good to take before a race, but if I feel I need to take something for this allergy bug/cold whatever it is what would you who know the impacts of various drugs take?

I usually go with the apply some dirt on it method, but if this race is successful it may be it for my distance racing this year so I want to do everything I can to give me the best shot at making that happen.
I've never researched this or really have no idea other than what I've done. I've taken Mucinex D Maximum Strength before to clear sinus issues before I have run. I believe I also ran a half last year when I got a bad cold the week before the race.

This one is pretty strong - 1200 mg of Guanifenesin and 120mg of Pseudoephedrine. But it works for me. About the only thing I can take for sinus issues.

Hey let me ask you guys a question. I'm running with my 12-year-old tomorrow. He will run as long as he can, but he'll not stay with me the entire race. Will I be out of line if I finish, then circle back off the course to find him and run the rest of the way in with him so we can cross the finish line again together?

Not sure, especially if you are being chip timed.

If it's me, I'm standing on the side cheering him on right before the finish line. I can vouch that when I see my kids there with 50 yards to go it really picks me up and makes me want to finish strong.

I do it all the time with my wife and kids. ETA: I don't physically cross the line though. I'll peel off 20yds before, just to be safe (on the timing).

MAC - ask pbm what he thinks about taking meds before a big race. Don't do it! Remember the #1 rule of racing: never try something new on race day.

Garmin or Strava guys, I am in conference call hell for the next (4) hours as an inactive participant. For kicks, does anyone know a way to plot multiple activities on a single map? I've used the same naming conventions for all of my races since 2009. I'd love to be able to plot the 18 legs, over 6 years of the Ultra relay I did this past weekend to see just how all over the map I've been.

ETA, I may have figured out how with Fit Tools. I am going to give it a shot and report back.
After a bunch of work I sort of got it to work. I first tried to combine 5 years, 3 legs each of the same ultra relay and it made a mess; likely because I do not start where I ended:

http://www.strava.com/activities/404907436

So then I thought I would try stringing together the 10 legs of a 10 leg survival tri I did last year and for mapping purposes, it worked: http://www.strava.com/activities/404919718

The time, distance, etc is way off, but the map is spot on.

Here are the basics on how I did it in case anyone wants to give it a try.

You need to extract FIT files from Garmin. I did it by using the classic view, searching activities and when I found them I had to switch to modern view. In modern view, I clicked on gear icon in the upper right and hit export original. This popped a WinRAR window where I could drag and drop the FIT file into a file I created for the event. I repeated this for all 10 legs.

Then, I launched the FIT file tool site https://www.fitfiletools.com/#/combiner#viewand selected the file combiner. There I browsed for my file on the event, selected all the files and hit go. Once downloaded, it gave two options. View download or upload to Strava. View download didn't work by upload to Stava did. It did seem like Ad Block created conflicts so I turned it off for that site.

I thought this might be fun for say, Sand if you could string together your entire overseas ride and to any of the Tri Guys to see your entire event strung together on a map versus the three different legs. I am looking forward to doing this for other events.

eta, screwed up the second Strava link, replaced it with the correct on.

Yeah, I think I've been so successful in my last two races because I finally started doing that simple system - what I do every other morning. I'm just dragging ### due to this bug. It started about a week ago as I was recovering from that 10K. A lot of honey lemon tea, water, and sleep but still no energy. I don't want to do anything different, but I'm feeling like I may need to in order to find energy stores for Sunday.

I wouldn't do pseudoephed, since that can make your heart race.

The night before our first marathon I tried putting the moves on my wife in the hotel. She said, "Coach says nothing new before a race!"

GL Gator, Brony, Ivan and MAC. Reports are required.

Do well, weekend racers!!! Ivan, I hope your marathon ends up being incident free ...but let the possibility of late-race theatrics be a motivation for you in the final miles.
The mayor met with the BLM leader yesterday. Apparently they'll still be there protesting at a designated area near the finish line, but they've agreed not to disrupt the race.
:goodposting:

Protesting is fine with me as long as the course stays open.

Alright. Did it. We're home now.

I was so geeked up about getting to the race I completely forgot my HR strap and my Vivoactive. So no recording.

I had no idea what my pace was. I did turn strava on a few minutes in but I didn't have my phone carrier so I kept accidentally pausing Strava. I was completely in the dark on my distance and pace, but my cadence was 160 due to the running music on Spotify.

Imagine my surprise when I came in almost a full 2 and a half minutes faster than my previous PR. The site with results will be up later today so I can post a link.

Remember, I was 365lbs a year ago and I was starting to feel like I had more in common with the people on "My 600lb life" than I did with any of you. When I "sprinted" across the finish line I was happy, then within a few seconds, almost completely overcome by emotion. I'm dusting up a little just typing this.

Thanks to all of you and your tips and support in this thread.

  Gator!!! Awesome story. Can't wait to see where you go with this! And I'm not surprised you improved 2.5 minutes. Race day atmosphere is like a drug...

The boys' soccer games were cancelled due to all the rain, so I made a split second decision to jump in a local 1 mile race this morning. Damn, now THAT was fun. :excited: :headbang:

I'm not sure what the official time is, but my watch said 5:18. I sort of fumbled for the button, so I may be off a second or so. Man, do I have a lot of work to do on my anaerobic fitness.... My arms, shoulders, lungs, and stomach were ON FIRE at the end. :X :X :X

I sanded the hell out of it. My quarter splits:

0.25 - 72

0.50 - 81

0.75 - 82

1.00 - 82

Being that I haven't raced a mile in 18+ years, I'm geeked as hell. I have no idea what my old PR was back then.

Fantastic Gator! Can I run your first marathon with you?

Ned, nice job! I have never raced a mile and I am not sure I want to.

I am on my way to a football game early this morning, so I ran my LR last night. 12 miles in much drier air. I felt great, but I am still having a higher heart rate than I would want. Average of 150 (with some bad data) at a slow 10:55 pace. Only solution is to run more (and wait for it get be 40 degrees).

Great job, Gator!

5:18?! Dude, sign up for a 5K ASAP! You should crush your PR.

Shawn- Fantastic! Congrats! It's been great following you on Strava and seeing the improvement in such a short period of time (relatively speaking). When's the 10K?

Ned- Great job! You've always said you're more naturally a shorter distance guy and he showed up today! Congrats!

Look at the guy who won this race I was in. Holy Smokes. We weren't at the first water stop yet when this dude smokes by us on the return leg.

5:03 Pace. 15:39 overall.

I was thinking about this when I was cooling down this morning. Steve's goal HM pace is 4:59. Certainly puts things into perspective!!

Awesome job Ned and Gator!

I did the Itasca Oktoberfest 5k this morning. I was hoping wind would die down today after very windy week, but today was windier. 20 mph with gusts to 40. Slightly better than snow conditions last year. Despite the so so weather, this is really good event. Very friendly through neighborhoods with nice post party with beer and brats. They cap the race at 750, so it's not too big or small.

Coming into this, I've been doing the usual 1 good run followed by a week or two of rehab / recovery runs. 2 runs per week at 2 to 4 mi per clip. No real endurance training to speak of. Sucks but that's what the calf allows.

Anyway, finished at 21:03. 27th overall. 3rd in AG. Our 3 man team finished 2nd again - woo! Nice GC out of that.

Splits were 624, 1322 and then I don't know.

Mostly content with the run. Left everything out there and knew coming in I wasn't ready to deliver a PR. Not getting under 21 was no biggie. I've been below that before and injuries didn't allow my training to put me in a spot to do that today.

Fun event and now I need my post 5k beer brat nap to commence. Next week I'll look to get a tweak in my orthotic and pray that that helps.

Awesome work (you and your boy)!!! You post reminded me of something, for the VivoActive they just released a Homer J Simpson https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/0c61752f-0267-4a61-9b4e-7325044be706watch face. Its a crappy face, but the Homer thing is fun. If you sit too long Homer ends up on his back in a doughnut coma and you step total is shown on his face going from a frown to a smile as your steps progress.

That is impressive, I hope you plugged that time into the mcmillan calculator.

Pish posh. You paced it perfectly.

On my end my kid had a meet this morning. I tell you they know how to do a cross meet down here. The one this weekend is the largest in the southeast - 5,000 athletes, 200 teams, at least 20 waves. My kid had 400 just in his wave. Ran 21:40, or :50 seconds better than last time. He's improving sickeningly fast. Fastest time on the day was 15:15.

I then had planned to ride 80 miles back home. I got 40 done before I called it and got a pickup. First time I've ever had to call to get picked up. Weather went from a nice overcast 58 to a wet, nasty 49 drizzle/wet road, dark clouds, etc. Just pretty miserable.

BTW Shawn - great 5k. And I guess the team got your inspiration - they're killing it. :hifive:

I'm doing something on my running bucket list tomorrow. Running in Central Park, NYC. Hoping I can do the full 6 mile loop without getting lost. Then if I still feel strong maybe going around the big lake inside to make it longer. Anyone else run there? If so any tips or recommendations?

Gator -- Great race! Glad you're enjoying this. Now you know what people are talking about when they mention "race day magic." But remember your garmin next time! (On the other hand, I'm curious to see how a 5k or something might go if I had to go entirely by feel).

Brony -- Nice. Hope you can get healthy.

Ned -- Damn that's fast. Good reminder that there's always somebody out there whose speed you envy and somebody who envied yours. You're looking at stevec. I'm thinking about how I can't even come close to your mile pace for a 400 or 200 even.

Gator ..Brony ..Ned - great job, guys! :pickle: :pickle: :pickle:
Awesome weekend guys! I'm off to run on the beach, vacation in Hilton head this week (school fall break).

Ned - awesome time. I did quarters this morning and the best I could do, which happened to be my 9th / last one, was a 5:40 pace and that was all out.

Was thinking about our boys MAC and Ivan as I was out running today. Looking forward to some more RR's!

3:45:30, not quite a 5 minute PR. Faded a bit at the end, but I'm very happy with the result if this is my last marathon.

No protesters anywhere to be seen. Thankfully cooler heads apparently prevailed, and a perfect racing day was not marred by anything stupid.

After finishing, I walked/waddled to the shuttle bus to go back to my hotel at the start. Took the first step up onto the bus, and BAM both calves completely locked up. I've never had anything like this happen before. Both my feet were locked in a ballerina position, putting my body weight on them didn't even make a dent, and I damn near fell backwards onto the street. Thank God there was a savvy volunteer there who helped me get steady and basically shoved my feet back into place. Even as I sit here now, I feel like they're going to cramp up again if I don't get up and move around a little. Hey, at least that means I left it all out there on the course.

Next on the agenda for today: all the beer I denied myself since February to maintain race weight.

I have a Beer Mile coming up in about six weeks. Any strategy suggestions?
I did one back in May, on a torn meniscus and almost went sub 10 minutes. The key seemed to be to limit the air taken in while drinking the beer. I did it by tilting my head back and pouring the beer out of the can. I also tried to drink the beers all in one shot. I made it through three of the four this way. The other thing I figured out in race is that I am quite capable of sprinting and burping (without puking). This hit around the outside of the first turn each lap. One more thing, exit transition right after you finish. I did not puke, but several did in transition right after they finished which resulted in a penalty lap. We had a blast. Be sure to bring a DD/photographer. These were some of the funnier pics of any of the things I've done. I can't wait to try again next year with a healthy knee.

I would think you wouldn't want the beers to be too cold. If trying to throw them down quick it's less painful for me that way.
The one I did we had to drink what they had. Lukewarm micro brew in a can. There was some Monty Python Meaning of Life :X going on.

So was I reading this, Shawn. Inspiring life transformation, with running a key part. Keep at it gb!

I'm geeked as hell.
Love that feeling, Ned. I hope to someday hold your pace for a set of 200M intervals.

Sounds like an awesome event, Brony! Congrats on a great effort and result, especially considering what you've been dealing with physically.

I remember doing this back when I started running, probably 10 years or so ago. Great feeling to be out there with so many people on that early morning. I don't remember much about it other than that I ran into the park and then ran around the reservoir. Have fun!

Knocking out a PR in a marathon! Well done, congrats. And hope you are deep into those "recovery beers" right about now.

Good on you! Really loving watching you guys post your training runs leading up to these amazing stories of success.

I think I'm going to try the Maffetone approach through the end of the year. All slow runs, just building mileage.

Initially, it feels very limiting. I've been running at 10 min miles this week (slower than I had been the last week or so) and I'm constantly catching myself lifting my pace. This morning's run, I felt like I couldn't let my legs stretch out. Every time I started to extend my strides to a comfortable level, my heart rate would go above the recommended rate.

I'll keep at it. I hope I quickly get to the point where I can run a real stride without having to tune it down.

Then once the new year starts, i'll throw in a weekly speed run of some type leading up to a half in the spring. And if all goes well there, it will be a magical land of half marathons, mud runs, trail runs and beer runs.

It can be frustrating but if you stick with it, it should pay off. Throw in some 7-10 second strides at the end of runs to keep that muscle memory intact.

If you don't already, download some Endurance Planet podcasts for some good MAF discussions.
