Had a wisdom tooth pulled yesterday.  It actually doesn't hurt too bad, getting by with just CBD and Advil (with the codeine on stand-by if needed), but every time I yawn or open my mouth widely I feel the hole open back up and my mouth pretty much fills up with blood.  So I figured exerting myself today wasn't a good idea and took the day off running.

In looking at Garmin Connect it looks like my HR went up to 108 during the extraction.  When it was over, I was drenched in sweat.  Let's just say I was a little anxious about the whole thing.

Just wanted to throw something non-poop/weather/cadence related out there.  You know, mix things up a bit.

It's been 20+ years since I had mine pulled but I got a nice combo of NO2+valium+demerol for mine and didn't have a care in the world during the procedure.  Fell asleep for parts of it.

Then the drugs wore off and things were less fun.  Nothing like tipping your head over the sink to let all the blood drain out of your mouth.  Fun times.

Gotta change the conversation from poop.

WWYD - 3 miles into my 6 mile run I blew a snot rocket, next thing I know I'm bleeding. Pretty badly. Bloody nose.

What do you do?

What did I do?

I have no idea. I’ve never had a bloody nose in my life.

Stop. Blood thins while exercising, so it's like a fountain once it's going. Speaking of which, @SFBayDuck I had a tooth pulled last month. I took two days off running them kept it low impact for a few days once started. I also lifted after only one day kinda against doctor orders. Just needed to monitor it during in case it started bleeding again.

Had this happen to me a couple months ago. Just pinched and held while I ran for a few minutes then I was good. Of course I looked a bloodied mess. Stopped by the supermarket I passed to wash off and then kept on running.

No idea what you did.

You are correct sir!

Stopping would have been smart.

I kept going, occasionally snuffing up the blood and spitting it out (when there were no people around). It wasn't a good look.  By the time I got back to where there were a decent amount of people (on our greenway), I was nasty.

So....this forecast looks awful.

Here's our plan: we are coming to Carmel tomorrow. Just playing it by ear. If they cancel the race (which it looks pretty bad at this point), I'll run the Garmin marathon in two weeks here in KC. Worst case scenario is my wife and I get a nice weekend away from the kids.

If anyone is in town, we'd love to have dinner with you on Friday. I know we have a reservation thus far with @Juxtatarot and @The Iguana. If they cancel the race sometime on Friday, just hit us up on the phone text line for maybe a different plan. If there is no race, we wouldn't mind venturing out and finding a different restaurant and maybe some live music or something.

@gruecd and @Juxtatarot - what are you guys thinking at this point?

I’m planning to go and hoping for the best.  I’m wondering if the thunderstorm icons on weather underground just means a chance of thunderstorms.  I know such storms don’t typically last hours like that.  Another weather site gives just a 20% chance. I’m assuming the race is more likely than not of happening.

One thing I know about Weather Underground is they are almost always right. I usually look at the percentages. When they are showing anything over 80%,  it is pretty dang accurate. The fact that they are basically up in the 90’s and above means we are gonna get a thunderstorm. I use this site all the time when planning my runs, and I would guess their accuracy is over 90%. I personally think Carmel is gonna get pounded on Friday and Saturday.

I'll be here. Definitely heading up to Carmel to pick up my packet and such. I'm in for dinner but doubt they cancel before morning if they do at all. If by chance they do, I'd most likely be up to doing something else. But I imagine they will wait until last minute to make a decision that big.

I think that percentage may just be for rain.  I could be wrong.

At this point, I am pretty sure it is going to be raining. But I think the threat of severe weather isn't super high. At least I haven't seen anything indicating a whole day of thunderstorms. Depending on how heavy and exact timing, I could see maybe a brief delay, but I expect it to be run.

Popped out of bed last night at about  11:00 realizing I forgot to pack my running socks.

Heading to Carmel. Have fun today discussing the weather. And cadence. :headbang:

Cadence slow. Local quick trip chai latte machine broken. Now at second quick trip. Can’t deny my wife a chai latte on her birthday.

Ok, I took the plunge.

First beet juice shot this morning.

I ordered that powder I linked and mixed with 4 oz of water.  Very beet-tasting but I like beets so I didn't mind it at all.  We'll see how the tempo run goes later this morning/afternoon.

Good luck to all you guys this weekend.  I'll be tuned in for sure!

Pollen finally got me here.  Woke up Tuesday morning and could hardly breath.  Yall be the BMF's this weekend...I'm taking a break!

As someone who ran Boston 2018.....a few hints:

1.  Vaseline is your friend.  I know some people like body glide, but vaseline is my go to because you can easily get it in every nook and crevice.  I recommend you vaseline EVERYWHERE on your feet.  From heel to toe, top and bottom, in between every single toe. Once you put your sock and shoes on, you won't notice it at all after about 5 steps.

2. Vaseline is REALLY your friend.  I would strongly encourage you to vaseline all of your groin area.  And between those ### cheeks.  Everywhere.  Hard to be too liberal with the amounts. You will thank me later.

3.  I used body glide on anywhere I might have chafing.  Along my waist where the waistband of my shorts would be.  Under my arms, armpits, etc.

4.  I wore a hat to shield my eyes from the rain.  Best to use a light runners hat (or a visor).

5.  I tried this for pre race and it was moderately successful.  You know those plastic grocery bags you get at the grocery store?  I put those OVER my shoes and rubber banded them to my shins for pre-race.  It kept my shoes pretty dry.  Be careful tho as it can get slippery if you try to run in them.

6.  Highly recommend wearing a garbage bag for pre-race.

7.  Post race - you will get cold really fast.  Have a plan to get warm and dry clothes quickly.  If you need to go a mile before you get to dry clothes, I would recommend you keep running after you finish.  Once you start walking, your body core temp will drop quickly.

8.  If you realize before getting in the shower post race that you still chaffed somewhere, before you get in the shower, put Vaseline on that area and let it sit for a minute.  It will not hurt nearly as much in the shower.

Enjoy fellas!

Great advice, buddy! Thanks!

Having run a couple marathons in the rain, I agree...Vaseline, Vaseline, and more Vaseline!

6.  Highly recommend wearing a garbage bag for pre-race.
If it's a long, black garbage bag ...that and an empty, wide-mouth bottle (peanut jar works well) accommodates the final, pre-race pee while standing in the corrals. Yes, I've successfully done this.

---

If the rain does delay the race, I have fun picturing the four guys sitting in a tight circle near the start line in their matching rain ponchos, passing around a bottle of beet juice, while learning/singing the lyrics to #BMF.

Sitting in an all day meeting/ vendor demo today. THIS. IS. BRUTALLY. BRUTAL. Longingly looking outside at a lovely day for a run while being bored to death.

40 minute tempo run nailed

--Held my 5K/10K race pace of 7:30ish for over 5 minutes pretty comfortably
--Cadence of 180
--HR of 156
--Nice progression curve with max 2/3rds of the way into the run (despite the elevation change)
--19 days in a row

I'm pretty sure I could have come close to my 5K PR today.  Beet juice?  New cadence?  Better fitness?  Or most likely -- all of the above!!

Btw, is anyone racing this weekend?

Overall good advice, especially the post-race shower technique.  I personally don't use vaseline on my feet (I'm all about Run Goo) as I find it just breaks down and loses it's lubrication qualities after 3-4 hours .  So you guys should be fine!

Whatever you use, don't forget your entire undercarriage.  Taint Chafing might be an edgy band name, but it isn't your friend.
