Ran a 10k - Official Thread (24 Viewers)

I got a pizza and could only eat two three slices.  I'm a bit messed up, I think.  Wine going down ok (along with water).
Congratulations on your 50! That’s super impressive!

When I ran my first (and only...so far) 50-miler, I was a mess afterwards. Nonstop cramping, couldn’t eat, etc. To say that I was “a bit messed up” would be an understatement.

Let us know how you’re doing this morning, and don’t be a stranger!

I couldn't imagine consuming alcohol after something like that. Hell, I couldn't imagine drinking alcohol after a regular run. However, @gruecd was crushing beers when he crossed the line at our relay, and I was in the fetal position the entirety of the day. The bottom line, I'm probably just a wimp. Enjoy your wine. Congrats on your amazing accomplishment.

Wanted to do 10+ today, and also wanted to run along the Brooklyn waterfront under the bridges (Dumbo).

4 or 5 in I was feeling great, except all of a sudden I had to ChiefD it. In Dumbo. First place I tried was closed for the pandemic...this might be bad. Then I remembered- this is Dumbo. This is the land of the multi-thousnad dollar strollers and lazy rich people thinking theyre vanguarding it in their gajillion dollar lofts and bespoke Tesla's. Without any woods nearby, I ran into the newish luxe mall along the river, straight into a giant, empty a/c cooled, sparkling clean resort styled bathroom and did the chief proud.

Ran 11.5m in 9:08s, picking up the last 2.5m. felt like I could've gone a lot further, but will probably need to bust out the fuel belt to bring some fluids along if I start going longer.

But how much less did you weigh afterwards?

@MAC_32  How are you feeling?
Thankfully, the road rash is almost fully healed. That was the greatest source of discomfort after the first few days. Scar may be around forever, but the scab started peeling away late in the week and is almost completely gone now.

Exterior of the bone bruise should be healed this week (stopped taking advil Friday), but what lies beneath is more complicated. Doc said I'll be able to tell when it is actually healed by touch, but based on where I was then it'll be at least another week or 2, which would make 3-4 total.

I've been doing strength exercises this week, but very little below the waist. It was clear in last week's appointment that I am now a muscle imbalanced mess in my legs. One hamstring is tight, the other is not. One quad is strong, the other is not. Hip flexibility one way, but not the other. One calf cramps up when engaged, the other is fine. Etc. It was almost comforting to go through that as it confirmed it's going to be a slow process to get my body right again. Too much too fast too soon and an over compensation injury is inevitable. So I intend to start doing more lower body exercises and some running over the next 10 days, but it'll be low quality and quantity then if anything feels off I won't hesitate to pull the plug. I start pt next week and I intend to use those first couple sessions as a decision making point about where to go from there.

Doc said the soonest he'd expect me to be normal is 2-3 months. PT, what I do in between, and setbacks could push that timeline out further but it isn't anything that can be forecasted now. He said if there are issues after the next 6 weeks or so that he will order a mri at that time.

Preciate you reaching out

I’m thinking about trying to run my first (second?) marathon Saturday.  Anyone interested?

Ouch.  I was hoping your recovery would be less complicated.  It sounds like you're on top of things though and hopefully your knowledge and experience will benefit tremendously.

I did a lot of reading about this injury before seeing the sports doc, which prepared me for what I experienced. The biggest problem with this injury is the second one recovering from it has a tendency to cause. The fact that I have a deeper one only makes that recovery more complicated. Gonna be a lot of single leg work and yoga for me in the near future!

I've got a couple ¾ oz bottles you can borrow if you want.

If/when you do, try walking down some stairs and report back.
I actually didn't feel bad this morning and got out of bed without issue.  Thinking, "all right, this isn't a problem at all," I then got to the stairs.  You nailed it!  :lmao:   Felt like it took me ten minutes to get down them.

The internal monologue as you debate how to complete the first step is something one cannot prepare for. You can't appreciate it until you've actually experienced it. Congrats, you made it.

All right, some thoughts from my 50 miles yesterday.  Not an official report.  :)

Location:  You guys smartly recommended I have a little elevation gain since I am more used to that.  I intended to take that advice, but the locale I had scouted for that would have involved a drive, and once I was into this, I didn't want to take the time off to drive anywhere.

Let me back up...  I started just before 2 a.m., so I decided to start in my backyard so as not to have the cops called on me somewhere else.  I stayed there until the sun came up ~four hours later.  Then I moved to a big field about a block away.  It's next to a soccer field, so the same length as that, but wider.  I had scouted this out as a terrific location except for two things:  (1) in the afternoon, it would get full sun, and (2) almost every time I'd gone by, there were 1-4 dozen Canadian geese milling about.  Why are Canadians so nice but their geese such jerkfaces?

So I started in the backyard, moved to the big soccer-ish field, and then when the sun came over the trees there, moved to a spot a mile or so away (if I knew how far I wouldn't have ended up with 50.2 instead of 50 miles) in...a cemetery.  Wait, before I look like more of a jerkface than a Canadian goose, I wasn't using the part where the graves and such are.  Feels disrespectful to be running (OK, walking) around in a place where people are mourning their loved ones.  But there's an unused area of the cemetery that was another nice big flat field, but with lots of shade-bearing trees.  I'd noticed it a few weeks ago, and my only concern was that it was so unused it was a bit overgrown, so I'd tested it to make sure that wouldn't be too much of a pain, and it worked fine.  Anyway, those were my three utterly unremarkable locales, all very flat.

Gear:  I had essentially no problems with any clothing or gear.  I'd forgotten about morning dew on the grass, so I did have to change from my trail runners to some waterproof hiking boots for the first few hours in my backyard, but then I changed back when it had dried out.  I didn't experience chafing until I went to change clothes and notice a small amount on the inner thigh where underwear had rubbed.  Nothing painful at all.  No blisters.  With about six miles left, I could feel that my socks were wearing thin in the heels.  Actually I thought it was that they were wet (sweat?), but when I later took my shoes off the heels were almost bald.  I did have extra socks with me and considered changing, but it would have involved sitting down, which I didn't want to do, and I was also afraid my shoes wouldn't go back on afterward!  Speaking of shoes, I could feel my toes moving around a little too much, especially on the left, so I wouldn't be surprised to lose a couple of toenails eventually.  It's ok; has happened before.

Nutrition/hydration:  Well, it turns out that I am not much different in long "walks" than I am in hiking - my body just doesn't want to eat on either one.  About 17-18 miles in, I had my first food - a banana.  It tasted so good that I ate a second one.  Bad idea.  Started feeling nauseated about a mile later.  That passed after a few miles, but was yucky for a bit.  From then on, I stuck only with water and juices.  Some of the "listen to your body" and nutrition discussion in here had made me contemplate beforehand what I really needed to have on hand, and one thing I'd realized always perked me up during hikes was juice.  I never buy it otherwise, but stocked up with some orange and mango juices, and those were the entirety of my nutrition other than the two ill-fated bananas.  I had other stuff on hand but never felt like eating any of it.

Weather:  I was lucky in that the sky stayed overcast until about 11 a.m., and I think the high temp for the day was 71.  No complaints here!  I did manage to get a little bit of a sunburn despite thinking I'd been careful.  I'm really pasty, though.

Entertainment/Breaks:  My biggest concern with doing this was the tedium.  Especially given that I ended up circling around the same locales over and over, I was more worried about being bored than about any physical aspect of this.  Having known for a little while that I'd be trying this, I'd been stocking up on episodes of This American Life, and I guess I listened to 14 or 15 of them!    (Side note:  highly recommend the episodes "Here Again" from Jun 12 and "The Show of Delights" from January 31.)  Thought I might get bored even listening to those, but it didn't happen.  My strategy was that I would put an episode on, and at the end of each one (an hour to an hour fifteen), then I'd take a short break for water/juice and to pee if necessary.  Those were the only breaks I took all day - 2-5 minutes each time.  For the last hour, I switched to a Beatles mix for inspiration.  :)

Body aches, pains, and surprises:  As I mentioned last night, one surprise was the swelling in my fingers.  I never have that while hiking.  I know if I'd raised my hands up or used my arms more, it wouldn't have been as bad, but I was tired and didn't want to do that!  No big deal, but just looked and felt slightly weird.  I also figured out why my nose started running like crazy late in day - allergies!  Usually I don't have allergies this late in the year, but it's been a strange year.  That also led to a sore throat that continues today.  My biggest issue today is very chapped lips.  I was applying lip balm, but apparently not enough.

At some point midway(?) I started to have lower back pain.  That was surprising as I figured my feet would be the biggest issue.  Did I mention I have arthritis in my feet?  Is there anything one could possibly have that makes them sound older than arthritis in the feet?  Gah.  Eventually the back pain subsided or it was just replaced by so much pain in my knees, ankles, feet, and hips that I didn't notice anymore.  I'd say with about five miles left I kinda wanted to die in a quiet and peaceful way.  With 2.6 miles left I wanted to die in any way possible.  I'd been motoring along pretty well before then, but when the pain came it came fast and furious.  By the end I was literally talking out loud to myself, giving myself "you can do it" encouragement.  In addition to the pain, I was feeling pretty woozy and definitely not walking in straight lines.

Thank you again to the denizens of this thread for all the help and encouragement!

Congrats on the 50 miler Krista!

Wait a sec - How many circles did you do? Did you switch directions to break up the monotony?

Congrats @krista4!  Very cool that you got it done. Everything you described seems pretty “normal”, including the swelling in your hands.
Have to admit, I can’t imagine just walking/running in circles for that long. But if you didn’t hate it, you’re a hell of a candidate for a 12 or 24 hour race.

"You don't have to like it. You just have to not hate it."

Strava or it didn't happen.
Now that would have been funny.

I did start with MapMyRun, which I think I've explained here before that I've historically used for better tracking of elevation gain (when I had MapMyHike, which was later combined with it).  :bag:   I tried using it for this but realized it was glitching when an hour in it showed me having gone about 1/2 mile.  I do have Strava but never turn it on.  So I just used Apple Health, which was automatically going anyway.  The only issue there is that, when it's off, it's always off to the lower side, so I might have done more than 50.2.

3. Oofos sandals -- Next up, recovery sandals! I'd never heard of such a thing until recently. Started looking into it and decided to get a pair for my wife as a little something for training/upcoming race. I kept reading reviews of people swearing by these things after a workout. Well, it's legit. Picked up a pair for each of us and have been using it this past week. In particular this morning, my legs were a little tired and put them on -- instant relief. I wear these around the house now. I would highly, highly recommend investing in a pair of these, especially for you guys that complain of soreness after runs or the day after. Smoke version on sale at Amazon for $39.99
Guys,

I'm quoting this because there's a big problem with this recovery sandal. It will make everything else you put on your feet feel like ####.

Seriously, get yourselves a pair of these sandals. They are amazing. @gruecd can attest to them as well (no idea if he likes them as much as me, if that's possible, but....)

If you don't want to get it yourself, put it on that gift wishlist. Can't decide on that gift for someone else? These sandals.

Finally, the last product I mentioned earlier that I'd review was this GU flask. Used it today and it's solid.

Reasons to get it:

1) Easier to take while running. No need to tear the little packet, then cut the side of your mouth getting it out, then having to worry about throwing it away. Just turn the top and squeeze. Allows you to take more than a single serving if you want, as well.

2) It holds up to 5 servings and you can easily adjust how much you bring with you. It's marked on the flask so you can see how much you fill up and how much you take.

3) It ends up being cheaper than buying the packets. It's like $13 for the 15 serving pouch (< $1 per serving) compared to $1.50 per packet. Pays for itself after just one of those pouches.

The only downside is it's not "small", but, for example, it easily fit in my flipbelt.

Here ya go.  Check out that elevation gain!  :lmao:

Chews and flip flops.

Don’t overthink it, people.

I lose fitness so fast.  Four weeks "off" (~6 activities over those four weeks), and on Saturday I'm sucking wind on trail climbs I used to destroy.

Lumbar spine and hip MRIs tomorrow.  PT appointment Thursday.

Going to try to run 2x this week and then another trail run on Saturday.

The NSAIDs and rest are doing more for my butt than the steroids and rest.  Hopefully PT will give me some good tips for at-home recovery as well.

Clock is ticking to September (Run Rabbit Run) and October (R2R2R)!

I got more beat up on a 10 mile loop than I care to admit yesterday. Went with a buddy and pace, talking, heat, no water (do everything wrong, yep) got me. Walked a hill and a red light to keep from something really stupid.

Recovery run this morning was nice. Suppose to get hella rain / flood risk from the storm coming up coast so might have some more recovery days.
