I really need to do hills more often. It's been over a month since I did the "mountain" (not much of a mountain really, Strava lists it at 572') so I decided to test myself on it this morning. It's about 1.7 miles, previous best was 17 minutes (which wasn't really pushing it hard but still my best out of 5), got it at roughly 15:30 for a 9 minute clip. Really feel like I should be faster but I wasn't able to push harder.
Pretty big hill for around here. I don't think that pace is bad at all!
Agreed. That's pretty close to my go-to Strava segment for a "tempo" effort , up 454' over 1.7 miles. It's all singletrack, not overly technical, but some rocky and rooty sections mixed in. I push that comfortably hard and am usually at a 9:45-10:00 pace for the segment.

Not this week, though....taking it really easy to the point of hiking a lot on the uphills to let the achilles hopefully come back around soon. But I have managed that with a 5 miler Monday and today and it seems to be ok.

Even though it's in the 50s today, I decided to run on the treadmill to avoid 25 mph winds. Have I said before that a treadmill tempo is one of my favorite workouts? I love not having to worry about accidentally starting out too fast (or too slow), and not having to deal with wind, hills, or temperature. Just set the pace and don't ##### out. Managed 5 tempo miles averaging somewhere in the 6:20s. I was doing better this summer but I'm pleased with this since my overall mileage has been down. I'm starting to ramp back up this month though.

Nice. I toughed out the winds to get in a bunch of 800m repeats on the track. Legs are (a good) toast.

What are you ramping up for?

Really bad forecast for my half on Saturday. 68 degrees with dew points similar, meaning SI of around 130+. 50% chance of rain. I am thinking I might need to just run it as a hard training run and try to keep my competitive side in check. I won't get an accurate time to use to evaluate my pace for the marathon (unless it has similar weather). I wilt in heat like old lettuce.
Thats a bummer. I hope you have more discipline that I have - I can't do the bolded!

What are you ramping up for?
Training for spring "officially" starts January 1 so December ramp up is pre-training. Spring features a few 5ks, maybe a half with Tri-man and maybe a 10 miler with you and Paul.

I hope you are able to run the 10 miler, I think with a good cycle you will have a chance to run sub 60 on that course.

This is going to be an awesome race. I hope all 3 of us can get in (I was shut out in 2013). It may be smart for all 3 of us to submit a group entry so we're either all pick or all not picked.

I put more effort into the first half of my six mile run going into that wind (7:41/8:08/7:55) than I did going back (7:16/7:11/6:59).

Yeah I think if things go well I may have a shot at sub 60. I was able to run sub 65 in 2014 and my training that winter/spring wasn't very good.

The team idea might be a good idea, but I need to make sure my company isn't submitting a team this year (I ran for them 2011-2013). It may be a career limiting decision if I pick the FBG team over the company team. Sorry guys.

Sub 60 10 miler?! The bar is really getting raised around here!
Maybe not for pbm, but sub 60 seems very ambitious for me. I can barely run a 5k at that pace now. But with a slightly downhill course after (hopefully) a good training cycle on (hopefully) a good weather day, who knows?

Oh it's definitely possible.

I love it. Hopefully we all progress in 2016 as much as we did in 2015. I've been thinking about that a lot lately but I've got a little bidness to take care of in 9 days first.

Ran my half this morning. Ned was right, I could not keep from racing it, even though I intended to take it easy and make it a long training run.

1:50:06. Not terrible considering the heat (68 at the start with 67 dew point).

33rd overall out of about 200. 3rd in age group 50-59, although they only gave bling to the top two.

Five weeks to Houston.

Rode for the first time since September.

Nothing great but felt awesome to be back out there, even more awesome that it's December and riding was comfortable.

Had a solid first marathon training week.

Mon: 6.1 @ 8:21

Tues: 5.1 @ 8:3

Wed: 2 @ 8:20 then 2M hill workout. This was a group workout with the coaches starting at their running store at the base of Heartbreak. A lot of fun, will do this as often as I can. I felt faster the rest of the week.

Thurs: 6.1 @ 8:06

Fri: 7.1 @ 8:04

Sat: off

Sun: 12.1 @ 8:32 Huge breakthrough here, felt steady and strong the whole way, HR was steady around 150 throughout. Loved this run.

40.3M for the week and feeling like I'm almost back to normal. Three weeks before were 15, 25 and 35 miles so it's been a nice progression. The mild weather has been a huge bonus, much easier to get out in the morning before work. Looks like it's going to continue for a while which is great news for running but bad news for the backyard rink I've spent much of the past two weekends constructing.

Great stuff Nigel.

I am peaking for Houston. Shooting for 65ish miles this week and next, with 21 milers each weekend. This is when I got hurt last year, in my last two weeks attempting to peak, so I will be cautious. First twinge and I am shutting it down.

Weather has cooled off so it should be nice.

I'm a dumb ###.

My youngest son's bday party was yesterday - soccer themed. We did parents vs. kids at the end, which was a total blast. Some of these kids (U10) are pretty fricken' good already. :bag: We played a solid 2hrs with them. I somehow did something my left knee; not even sure how/what. Its slightly swollen and pretty stiff today. No running for this guy for the next few days :kicksrock:

pool time

Ned, you aren't the only one with a trick knee. My right knee started to feel aggravated the end of last week and seems to be worsening. Doesn't really hurt to run on but feels irritated after. I think I may need to pass on my 50K. :kicksrock:

Ugh. You'll know the right decision in a few days of rest. The 50K is this weekend, right?

Yeah, it's Saturday. I'll see how it feels around Thursday or so. If it ain't good by then, I'm not going to risk a setback. Don't want to start 2016 with a limp.

More productive training this past week. As Nigel noted, the weather has been great. Chicago has had a lot of low 40 temps with light breezes and good sun. This was all track work ..and that seems to be paying off. My foot issue wasn't an issue at all during the week. I'll stay on the track this week (which will include a second long run on Wednesday), before getting some pavement miles during my taper.

T: 10 mi. Tempo: 8 mi @ 7:58, HR 158

W: 6 mi. recovery (but a smooth 8:16/mi)

Th: 12 mi. Intervals: 6 mi. warm-up, 12 x 800m @ ~3:28

F: 8 mi. recovery (8:30, HR 145)

S: 16 mi. easy, yet 8:14, HR 151

52 miles. Just crazy that the pacing is so smooth, and with a sub-160 HR, in this 8:00-8:30 range. Eager to see what might happen in a few weeks on rested legs and in a race environment.

Tri-man -- That's a very narrow range from tempo to slowest recovery (just 32 seconds). Relatively narrow HR difference too, which makes sense. I'm curious why you're choosing those paces.

It's odd. I run a pace that feels really slow ..but look down and see 8:15-8:30. And the HR is telling me it's slow. Even on Saturday's 16 miler, I was running 8:18s for the first several, then somehow the pace picked up. For the slow runs, I use my 'slow' breathing pattern (every third step), and it's no trouble to maintain that. I just have to wonder if a lot of this is due to the fact that I'm getting great rest and not stressed for time now that I'm faculty status. It could also be the light-mileage year I had due to the few different injuries.

Sixth annual year-end reports! (If you want to see prior reports, searching on "funniest" in this thread will get you to them). This is an open invitation to everyone who spends time here in the 10K thread. Add your report over the next couple of weeks as we close the books on the 2015 year and look ahead to 2016.

2015 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

New accomplishments or PRs in 2015:

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

A race or race training disappointment during 2015:

Total training volume during 2015:

A location you’d love to explore via running:

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2015:

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys):

Goal(s) for 2016:

2015 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved? Two new accomplishments + beat my 2014 bench marks - 1:28+ 10 mile trail race, 1:10+ 10 mile road race, 1:42+ half. Success! I did not do a 10 mile road race, but all other goals were accomplished.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2015: Most miles in a week - 36 (previous 34) and month - 133 (previous 120)...most importantly a new half marathon PR 1:34:03. Set my 10K benchmark of 41:51 as well.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race): The end of year half because it was probably my first workman's like distance race I've ever ran. While I was happy with my performance in all other races there was some level of adversity I battled through during the race. There really wasn't in this one, despite going into it with hamstring problems. Taking it as a sign that I'm turning a corner.

A race or race training disappointment during 2015: Given my expectations going into each of my races, I didn't have any disappointments. There were three A's and three B's, but none worse. I guess the biggest disappointment was the hamstring troubles this Fall which put an end to my sub 90 half goal, but I seem to be getting out of the woods with those - we'll see what the doc says this afternoon.

Total training volume during 2015: Only 843 miles right now. If I maintain my schedule for the final 2+ weeks then I'll end up over 900. Not bad for only one month over 60 miles before August. I cut back earlier in the year because of a) the horrible winter 2) focusing more on strength training and d) injuries, of course.

A location you’d love to explore via running: I want to get more exposure to real hills. The 10 mile trail race I have done each of the last two years is about 40 minutes away (about 10 miles north of Akron) and there are some good ones around there. I need to make the time to do it though. If I could do one each month starting in May once the mud becomes manageable I'd be satisfied.

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2015: Boring, but following pbm's, juxt's, and hang10's clockwork-like training was very motivating.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys): 5 of us did a slow evening run on the trails in early November, after daylight savings - head lamps were a necessity. It isn't too dark when getting started (5ish), but by 5:45 it was pitch black. We emerged from a heavily wooded area about a mile from our cars, with one more wooded section to go, and scared this 40something year old couple walking on a paved path we were crossing so badly that the woman fell into the man knocking them both over. Once we confirmed neither of them were injured we all shared a good laugh. She semi-hysterically called us a pack of crazy runaway coal miners and it's kinda stuck since.

Goal(s) for 2016: Primary goal - sub 90 half. It'll depend on the conditions, but I'd like to do the February trail 10K in under 55 minutes (previous times - 1:03:12 and 58:50). If I achieve my half goal in Spring then I'll probably look to do something different this summer/fall. If I don't then I'd like to get 1,200 miles in by the end of October. I figure if I can do that then I will in turn run sub 90.

2015 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved? Looked back at what I posted last year: Going all in this year. Way less drinking. Better diet. (starting to see results already after about 3 weeks of this. feel awesome on my runs right now) More slow miles. Full heart rate monitor training. Race goals: HM - 1:45 or lower. Gonna do a full in the fall, so goal there will be sub 4:00 - don't care where I end up there.

So, did a lot of slow miles this year. Ran full HR monitor training all year. Did not hit the 1:45 for the half. Did do the marathon at 4:33, and very pleased with this.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2015: Ran a marathon. :headbang: Ran a 22:53 in my first ever 5K, which placed me second in my AG. So all in all, a pretty good year.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race): A couple of these: on the 5K, having a plan and sticking with just running fast. And, coming down the stretch and looking at my watch knowing if I pushed it, I could get below 23:00. And I did it!

Crossing the finish line at Chicago for the marathon was pretty damn good too. All that training, to come down that final stretch, see my wife a mile from the finish - man I get chills just thinking about it. And a word for my wife: she totally kicked ### that day, meeting me at like 6 points on that course. What a day.

A race or race training disappointment during 2015: Not beating my 1:49 in the HM. After running the full marathon, I think 2016 should be a really good year. I learned a lot about what my body can handle while training for that full.

Total training volume during 2015: 1103 miles at the moment. I ran 732 last year, so clearly a big jump thanks to the marathon training.

A location you’d love to explore via running: Trail running. There are some good ones around here, so may start doing some of that in 2016. There is a 10 miler in February I may sign up for just for fun.

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2015: So many. I'm going to have to go through the thread again. I just remember a lot of sub 3:00 marathons this year - pbm, juxt, I know there are others.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys): Need to think about this one.

Goal(s) for 2016: Beat 1:49 in the HM. After the Chicago race, I think I may crush this. And also, run Chicago again if I can get a spot. My goal there would be sub 4:00. Another year of training should get me there.

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved? No goals at all, in fact ran/rode no races at all in 2015.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2015: A couple really stick out. The sustained power in this ride was just off the charts hard. 5 hours of constant rollers keeping up with the front group of 5 (ultimately finishing 3rd in the ride) was pretty amazing - 185w for 5 hours is about 15-20w more than previous (so 10-15% more). Second one was Cheaha Ultra. 125 miles, 14,000 feet of climbing, 8.5 hours of effort. Truly epic in all senses. As hard a ride as there is, really, anywhere around.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race): Finishing Scotland was a big accomplishment (330 miles, 25k ft/climbing in 7 days), and what I really aimed for this year. As far as best part of that - pretty much this.

A race or race training disappointment during 2015: Getting hurt again in the winter and not being able to trail run like I want to.

Total training volume during 2015: Almost 4000 miles of cycling, which is lots more than previous.

A location you’d love to explore via running cycling: Definitely would love to find time to do another cycling tour. France would be cool.

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2015: Steve's HM try, PBM hitting 3:00, and too many others to remember.

Goal(s) for 2016: 14130 feet - top of Mt. Evans. This summer - book it. Would also like to do Skyway Epic, a 6 hour MTB race here in AL. Also may have the opportunity to go to Amsterdam in April. Roubaix is only a couple hours away (cobbles!) - the last 80 miles of that would be awesome to do.

2015 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

My goals were to get healthy and get back on the roads. I entered 2015 with a calf problem that I thought was Achilles tendinitis, but was really a torn calf muscle. After finally going to see a doc and a PT I got back to running in June (the injury occurred 12/26/14). Shortly thereafter my mother got very sick and after six weeks of caring for her (and making running very difficult) she passed away August 24th. When the dust cleared I got back into training and have settled in pretty well.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2015:

None.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

None. I ran two races, both recently and they were ok. I got Grandmaster Champion at the 10k (out of 11 runners 50+). I would be a lot more proud if there were a few more runners!

A race or race training disappointment during 2015:

None really.

Total training volume during 2015:

I am at 930 right now, and I should end up right around 1000. About 850 of it after July 1.

A location you’d love to explore via running:

First place in a race. I've never been in that location while running!

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2015:

Many. Ned's half, Jux and Hang's ridiculous Marathon efforts. PBM smoking fast. I enjoyed Chief's run-up to his marathon and his enthusiasm and excitement about the race. I also really enjoyed being on strava watching you guys train.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys):

F$**&ng armadillo!!!! God that thing gave me the willies!

Goal(s) for 2016:

Sixth annual year-end reports! (If you want to see prior reports, searching on "funniest" in this thread will get you to them). This is an open invitation to everyone who spends time here in the 10K thread. Add your report over the next couple of weeks as we close the books on the 2015 year and look ahead to 2016.

but this thread started in February. we have to go to the last one to find last year's reports.
Oh, yeah. Details.

Goal(s) for 2016: 14130 feet - top of Mt. Evans. This summer - book it. Would also like to do Skyway Epic, a 6 hour MTB race here in AL. Also may have the opportunity to go to Amsterdam in April. Roubaix is only a couple hours away (cobbles!) - the last 80 miles of that would be awesome to do.
dammit. I'd be all over this if not for the HIM 13 days later.

actually, that might not be a bad thing. :oldunsure:

oh, and the whole mountain bike thing, which I don't have.

Still dealing with a sore right achilles, which is improving a bit. But last week my left heel started hurting, so now I have some PF going on. Running like 15 miles a week and I'm more hurt than I've been in years. WTF?

Went to see my torture doc today, they gave me a long laser treatment and then did some Graston scraping so bad that he actually apologized to me before he even started. I think he said, "it's not normal to have a cheese grater taken to your foot", but I can't be completely sure since the pain was so intense my ears were ringing.

Fun stuff.

Juxt's 2015 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Goals were:

PR 5K (< 18:41) and 5 mile (< 32:03) distances
Sub 3:00 marathon

All goals achieved!

New accomplishments or PRs in 2015:

As far as improvements go, 2015 was probably my best year since 2012 when I cut my marathon PR from 3:26 to 3:05 and my half marathon PR from 1:35 to 1:27.

This year I set PRs of:

5K: 18:08
5 miles: 30:32
Half marathon: 1:22:36
Marathon: 2:58:20

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

The half marathon was my best race from a McMillan calculator standpoint but I was certainly the most pumped up after the 5K PR since I finished first overall. Oddly the marathon felt more like a relief than anything else since I’d been trying for sub 3 hours since 2013.

A race or race training disappointment during 2015:

I ran another 5K a few weeks after setting my 5K PR. I was shooting for sub 18 but didn’t have it that day. It was the only race this year that I had a specific goal for but didn’t achieve it.

Total training volume during 2015:

I’m at 2,234 miles as of now and I’m hoping to get in another 100 or so before year end. This is the first year that I’ve logged treadmill miles and I don’t know exact totals for other years, but I’m sure this year my most ever.

A location you’d love to explore via running:

The streets of Philadelphia?

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2015:

As others have mentioned, it was the Summer of Strava and it was highly motivational seeing everyone’s workouts. In particular, pbm, Ned, Hang 10 and I were all training for marathons at the same time and we were all usually early morning runners. Being a time zone behind them, I’d usually see their runs every morning after I got done with mine. I was always anxious to see what they did. My favorite race memory was pbm’s marathon since we were both training for sub 3.

Goal(s) for 2016:

Originally I was only going to set a goal of a sub 18 5K. However, I’ve recently become very intrigued by the Broad Street 10 miler in Philadelphia and this sub one hour goal idea that pbm floated. For sure, that’s a challenging goal and I’m not sure if it’s realistically obtainable. However, every day since I’ve considered this, I’ve grown more and more motivated by this goal and also like the idea of training with (virtually speaking) and racing with pbm and Ned!

Sand - love that pic holding the bike up. Really cool.
That was the last climb of the tour - Baleach Na Ba (the pass of the cattle). That's the biggest climb I've done - 2050 ft. Also happens to be the biggest climb in the UK. We caught it on a spectacular blue sky day - a rare treat in that part of the world.

2015 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved? "Popping my ultra cherry at Ice Age 50K with gruecd. Improve on my BQ so I don't have to sweat the 2016 application process."

I had a blast running the 50K with gruecd. The race alone was a great experience, but it was equally as great getting to meet gruecd and his fiancee. They blindly opened their door to an ifriend and made me feel like a life long friend within minutes of being there.

I failed to improve my BQ time - while I'm disappointed I failed, I'm glad I went for broke.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2015:

 • Ran my first ultra (50K)
 • 1mi PR (5:12)
 • 5K PR (18:52, down from 19:20)
 • 10K PR (39:46)
Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race): The Rehoboth HM from 2 weeks ago. Regaining that feeling of being able to run through walls was so much fun.

A race or race training disappointment during 2015: The failed BQ attempt. This affected me a lot for longer than I'm willing to admit.

Total training volume during 2015: 1,890.4mi so far.

A location you’d love to explore via running: Portugal & Spain (may be going there in 2016)

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2015:

 • SteveC's Olympic qualifier quest. The dedication he's shown is truly inspiring to me. I've enjoyed watching his training on Strava over anything else.
 • pbm, Juxt, and Hang10's marathons. All 3 of them crushed it.
 • Sand's trip to Scotland
 • worrierking's recovery - the way he's jumped right back into the fray is impressive
 • Nigel's entire year has been incredible. Seems like every race was a PR for that guy.
 • ChiefD popping that marathon cherry after a lot of uncertainty.
Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys): Can't think of any.

Goal(s) for 2016: Focus on the shorter races (HM and below). I've spent the past 4 years on the marathon; it's time for a change. Might get into some cycling races.

I had a blast running the 50K with gruecd. The race alone was a great experience, but it was equally as great getting to meet gruecd and his fiancee. They blindly opened their door to an ifriend and made me feel like a life long friend within minutes of being there.
As a note there have been a good number of meetups that have happened due to this thread and without fail end up being super cool people. I took part in the Bourbon Chase and met 7-8 of the guys who hang out in here, got a blind invitation from BassNBrew to ride in NC with him a few times, and even had a nice dinner with Tri-man and his better half here in Alabama a few months back as he did his victory lap after his dissertation. Awesome people all.

It was a big leap of faith to fly half way across the country to meet gruecd, but knowing all of you had had good experiences made it a lot easier. This really is a cool place.

2015 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Sub 3 hr marathon, done.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2015:

PRs
10K 36:43
Half 1:28:12
Full 2:59:08

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

My 10K PR of 36:43 at the Camden Bridge Run. At the time I didn’t want to dwell on it since the goal race (the marathon, was only a few weeks away) but this was my breakout performance of the year.

I really enjoyed the walk to the starting line area at the Boston Marathon, I don’t even know how to describe how I was feeling but it awesome.

Meeting Gruecd and Tri-man for beers up at Boston was really cool. Racing with Ned at Camden was a lot of fun, I feel like we share a brain when it comes to training philosophy and it was great to meet him in person.

A race or race training disappointment during 2015:

The Alternative Half Marathon where I ran a 1:32:46, I was very confident going into this one but the allergy medicine messed me up.

Total training volume during 2015:

Currently at 2,759, should be over 2,800 by the end of the year.

A location you’d love to explore via running:

Wherever SFBayDuck runs.

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2015:

Tracking Juxt’s and Hang10’s marathons. With Juxt’s when the last timing mat on the course didn’t register, the period between the time he was supposed to cross that timing mat and the finish was stressful and never ending. With Hang10’s I was worried about him going out too fast after he had such a good half. I was really impressed on how he executed the race and was able to finish so strong.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys):

At 5:45 AM I saw a drunk walking along the side of the road with his pants down.

Goal(s) for 2016:

Not sure trying to figure all that out now. It should fun to compete with/against Juxt and Ned at Broad Street. If I run more miles than this year I will improve, but at some point I would like to run a good half.
