Ran a 10k - Official Thread (13 Viewers)

Speaking of next year, anyone tried any of the North Face endurance series races?  They have them across the country and one is outside of D.C. I Need april. Probably the least scenic of all by far but would slot nicely in for a longer trail experience for me.

Someday I'd like to run a real hill.
The SF version is pretty much the US 50 mile trail championship, typically one of the most competitive 50Ms in the country (along with Lake Sonoma). I've only run the 1/2 marathon, but they put on a great event. I was hoping to run the 50M this year since they moved it off the WS100 lottery day, but this calf just isn't going to let that happen.

Never done any real speed training until today.  That was interesting.  Ran a 1 mile warmup, then started (tried) doing 75 second runs at my goal 5K pace (8:00) with 2 min jogging in between.  The first couple really sucked.  I had a really hard time trying to get the pace right.  Using my wife's watch, I'd get to 8:15 and then I'd get to 7:45 and really struggled trying to get in between and hold it.  But, by the 3rd/4th ones, it got better and I started to get the pace a little bit closer.  It's strange, though, because Strava shows my pace even faster after the fact and I don't know which is which.

In the end, it was a good workout and I felt really good at the end of the last speed interval.  I wasn't working nearly as hard at the end of each interval by the last couple. I don't know if I did it right, but it is what it is.  At this point, I'm just going to look at Strava on my phone when I start the race and hope it's pretty close and aim as close between 8:00 and 8:15 and go from there.  If I end up having to dial it back, so be it.

I'll make it easy for you:

Mile 1: run your ### off until you feel like your lungs are going to explode

Mile 2: take a deep breathe and keep up the pace from mile 1

Mile 3.1: start praying for the finish, but it's only a mile away so you know you are almost done anyway. keep running hard.

Finish line: puke

WALA!

So I still don't have my FEMA badging and because of some yahoo in the building emailing personal information, all unbadged folks had to leave.  I guess that was pretty much me.  So I am driving down Skyline Dr. in Shenandoah National Park today.  It's a beautiful place.  I might be leaving for home sooner than I thought which means my 15k Oct. 1 is still in play.  Hoping I go home.  Our tax dollars are being seriously wasted on hurricane recovery efforts IMHO.
Federal government.

After today's 10k with only 1,446' gain I'm finally realizing the flying monkey is gonna suck. Think I'm going to have to treat it like the 50k or longer races, enjoy it, don't go for a PR (isn't going to happen anyway) and enjoy.  52 days to go...

I know this is not in your timeframe, however, I am starting to eye potentially doing this race http://jackjillmarathon.com/

I need to see how Chicago goes before I start to figure out my plan.

The elevation chart in this race is beautiful.  @JShare87 did this race this past year.
I also remember Chief taking about possibly doing it. I don’t know much about marathon courses, but I can say it was truly beautiful. I have even thought about doing it again. It left a really bad taste in my mouth to the point where I hate thinking about it and can’t even enjoy the accomplishment of finishing a marathon. It would be pretty cool if a bunch of us actually went up there and did it!

Also, I’m pretty sure it’s right around the corner from Duck. He could meet us up there as well and treat it as a 26.2 mile shakeout run. It’s kind of like a trail run....

I had the chance to meet @SFBayDuck for dinner here in Chicago tonight.  So nice to catch up on things post-Western States!  No running, but we did have to walk half a mile to the restaurant after finally finding parking in the west loop.  No foot rubs, either.

Heading back to Tampa in the morning.  So it looks like I will get to run my first 15k after all.  Not expecting much as I haven't run much lately, but always thought my first race at a new distance is a throwaway anyway.  So we'll see how it goes.  I upgraded to first class on my flight tomorrow for $39.  Do they offer foot rubs up there?

Haven't tried to PR my favorite Strava segment in a while and was feeling good this morning on a 50F sunrise run.  Good: hit my PR by 6 seconds (3:59 today v. 4:05 in June).  Bad: Still have to shave off 14 seconds for KOM. Ugly: Hocking loogies most of the rest of the run.

Yeah, if I ever do another marathon that one looks to be the one. I'm not sure I can train through another summer here in KC for a fall marathon, but for that one the bulk of the training would be in cooler temps. (at least relative to normal summer here)

I'm not sure I'm even going to do another half after this next one here in a few weeks. My body is just hating running right now. My mind too for that matter. Tired of everything hurting all the time and the stomach issues don't help. Just no consistency in how I feel from a day to day basis.

The cool temps this week are helping rejuvenate me a little bit, but I'm just tired of being tired. Boooooooo........ :wall:   :)

Lots happening on the SteelCurtain front:

1.  I got into BOSTON!!!!  I qualified by beating my BQ time by 3:56 when I ran 3:21:04 in NYC.  The cut off this year was needing to beat your BQ by 3:23 (compared to 2:09 last year, 2:28 in 2016, 1:02 in 2015 and 1:38 in 2014).  I am thrilled for this opportunity and am eternally grateful to @gruecd and @tri-man 47 for helping me figure out this marathon thing about 7 years ago on this site.  Also, special thanks to @Ned for snapping me out of my doldrums after running a 3:52 spring marathon in 2016 by sending me a text telling me to "HTFU and get my a$S qualified for Boston."  I couldn't have done it without everyone's support and camaraderie on this board.  THANK YOU!

2.  Chicago Marathon is just 10 days away.  I finished my final hard run this morning with 12 miles of which 10 were at MP (7:27).  Now its all shorter runs (8 miles or less) and all easy.   Getting excited.

3.  Chicago weather starting to look warm.  Temps in mid to upper 70's.  Not ideal, but what can one do?  Just make the best of it.  Was considering going for it and shooting for 3:16 but with the temps like predicted, I'm starting to dial that back some.

4.  Looks like a possible Chicago Marathon Friday night meetup with @tri-man 47 is a possibility.  This will be my second ifriend meet up. (Ran Philadelphia Marathon with Ned in 2012 when we both PRed.)

Congrats on Boston!!  That's awesome!

Keep me posted on Friday night meetup.  Good news is that wife and kids will be gone that weekend.  Bad news is that I'm still watching a puppy while they are gone, so I'm trying to get a handle on how long I can be out.

Reminds me of the Strava feed, every so often one of the people (sometimes it's the ladies) post "20 minutes, nighttime activity"  :excited:

Congrats, GB!  You've more than earned it.  :hifive:

Congrats on getting into Boston, hopefully you'll get better conditions than expected for Chicago.  The uncertainty of race day weather conditions is my least favorite thing about marathons.

5K in the morning. Trying to get into the 18s. PR is 19:39 back in May. Just went and picked up some rice.

Just ate some rice for dinner and seriously thought of you and chuckled while I did.  Good luck and also to @MAC_32 who I think is also racing this weekend.
Echo. Polished off chicken and rice from earlier in the week for lunch. Ground turkey and rice tomorrow. Thought of @JShare87 while nuking lunch. Now hangrily waiting for small humans to go to bed so I can mow down some frozen pretzels.

Quick race report. I woke up around 6:00 and immediately took 2 dumps, which was spectacular. Head out to the race and meet up with a few friends that just started running. They are the reason I ran this race, it’s a pretty small one (125 people). Right when I show up, I see the 23 year-old that is at every race I enter. This guy is the reason I have finished 2nd in 2 previous races. In the past, I was amazed at his starts because it looks like he starts in a sprint and is just gone. In all my other races he is outta sight within the 1st mile. So, I instantly know that 2nd place is the best I’m going to do.

The race starts and he takes off, I decide to go with him. I stayed about 25-30 yards behind him the entire race. Coming into the home stretch, I picked up the pace a bit but couldn’t catch him. Ended up losing by less than 5 seconds. I don’t think this kid gave it his all. He’s capable of running 16-17 min 5Ks. I’m not sure if he hasn’t been training recently but he looked pretty gassed at the end. One of these days I will get him. Chip time was 18:52 and got 1st in my age group, which I am really proud of. Still think I am capable of better. I am just trying to keep running and building a strong base. Looking forward to all the other races this weekend!

Good luck to all the racers!!!

Nice race. I like that you didn't just concede second place and decided to go with him.

Crushing it!  Great time @JShare87!!!

15k in the am for me.  Not quite ready for it, but it's my first attempt at this distance so I'll be happy running on a beautiful course at Ft De Soto and finishing.
