Ran a 10k - Official Thread (2 Viewers)

Funny I was googling around for swim lessons last week to see if I could find somewhere to learn how to swim competitively.  I can swim but have no clue how to properly breathe.
The shark move, figuratively, is to breathe when you rotate the head out of the water.  HTH

(But getting that breath is dependent on a smooth exhale as your head is then turned down.)

:D

To be clear, I wasn't complaining. Just stating my preference for NOT having my clothes be soaked with sweat when I finish running.
Similar to me stating my preference for my son not leaving his #### lying around the house. I'm not complaining, just prefer to not have to pick up after him.

To be clear, NOT complaining.

####, I'm at 94 miles for the month. Why did I have to look? What was supposed to be a rest day tomorrow is now turning into a 6 mile run.

Running headphones/earbud talk:

I had a Motorola S305 from long ago that worked perfectly for when I run.  These were over the ear and had good enough sound and I could still hear people talking if I needed to.  Unfortunately, being several years old, they died a few weeks ago.

I ended up picking up a pair of JLab Epic 2 BT earbuds at Sam's and have been using those.  They are ok, but I never get a good enough fit, they block out all ambient sound which I don't really like, and now they completely died after just about 3 weeks (just read that's happened to other people as well).  So I'm going to bring these back for a return.

Any recommendations?  Ideally, I'd like to get an over the ear set now that I've tried these but I'm still open to the idea of ear buds.  I don't care as much about the sound quality of music, only that I can hear it.  Bigger preference for me is comfort and ease of fit and staying in place while running.

Interesting timing.  I recently had a pair die.  After much experimentation of about 6 to 8 earbuds over the last few years, I had been loving VAVA moov 11 earbuds. When they work, they are awesome, but pair #1 lasted 8 months and pair #2 lasted 2 weeks.

I just ordered MuveAcoustics and they will show  up tonight. I'll keep you posted.  My needs are (1) better stay in place while running even with sweat. (2) volume controls on the wire, (3) good sound and (4) ideally 90 angle on the jack so that it doesn't bend in my running sleeve.

I will add that I am not a fan of Bluetooth.  One more thing that needs to stay charged and I haven't found one that doesn't bounce like I have a ponytail.

I'm only really interested in BT, unfortunately. Don't want to deal with wires from a belt or armband.

I'll be leading the 3:45 pace group at Mohawk Hudson Marathon in NY in October.  I even have a webpage.  I'm ready for all your jokes and snide comments!
It's kind of hard to make fun of a guy who is pacing a race to help other people.

That being said, I'll be back tomorrow after I've had time to think up some witty comments.

I only run with headphones in one ear.  For years I bought cheap pairs at Ross, Marshalls, etc and just cut one of them off.  Then I tried one specifically designed to be used as a single, something like this.

But a few months ago I bought the Jaybird Runs, and love them.  I use just the right one whenever I run, and have used both a few times if sitting somewhere when I want to listen to some tunes.  The only fear is it falling out and losing it, but that's only happened when I took my shirt off or messed with it or something.  That and they only last 4-5 hours, so my long runs can push their limit, and obviously I can't use them in an ultra (but I don't usually listen to anything during races, anyway).

ETA:  It's pretty decent when used for phone calls as well, which comes in handy when I get a work call when out on a run

Man you are one fickle little minx (FLM).

No wires

No headlamp

No running in the rain
Ward, don't you think you're being a little hard on the Beaver?  After all, we're all in various stages of transition from being a FLM ( :D ) to a BMF.  It's really a life-long journey that we share together * .

* Except for @SteelCurtain, aka "blind ref," who likes to train alone ("I run solo") whenthecorrectresponseis"irunsolobutItrainemotionallymentallyanddarnitevenspirituallywiththisamazinggroupofifriends."

I have these.  They are pretty good yet cheap.  For some reason it sometimes falls out of my right ear (I'll have to push it back several times in a run) but fits better in my left.
Alright, just ordered a pair.  They also come with a free pair of wired headphones .  Also ordered a pair of these as they are similarly priced and reviews also seem to be excellent.  I'll compare the two and don't mind having an extra set.  If I love both, then who knows, maybe I'll end up sending them to someone who changes their avatar to one of my choosing.

I had never thought to look at monthly miles before. I'm at 85, so I can preserve my rest day tomorrow. If I was in the 90s I might have joined you in being dumb. I'll make a hundred the goal for next month.

Don’t.
In all seriousness, I'm not OCD like most runners it seems.  I don't care about stopping at 4.9 miles or hitting even numbers.  My comment was somewhat in jest but I was thinking of getting out tomorrow anyway.  When I did my base training in March/April, the Higdon plan had me running 7 days/week and I did well with it.  MWF were always slow, 3 mile recovery days and they usually made me feel better after I ran them.

But, right now, the plan has me doing 4 pace miles on Saturday and then a 1:45 long run on Sunday (so about 11.5 miles for me), which is going to be put me at ~34 miles for the week.  Looking at that, if I did 6 tomorrow that'll get me up to 40 and probably too big of a jump considering I've been at ~27 the last couple weeks.

So thanks for making me look at it closer just to make sure it wasn't a stupid idea.  It looks like it is so I'll just take it easy tomorrow.

Ugh, wife hasn't been able to run all week and is finally off tomorrow before heading out of town. She just asked to run together in the park with our little one in the stroller.

Looks like the 6 is on.  Just really, really slow.

Yeah, I had some choice words to share when I read that but didn't want to get reported.

Just got home from work and it's a glorious 70 degrees outside with only a 66 degree dew point.  It feels magnificent.  I wasn't planning on running yet but I'm not passing this up.  About to go drop my daughter off and then do my tempo run back to my house.

I'll have plenty of thoughts and prayers for @gruecd's humid 52 degrees while I'm knocking that out.
#### y'all

Mid 80s, with a 155SI.

my watch isn't speaking to my phone through Bluetooth so my runs don't count anyway :kicksrock:

So you're saying the 2 year warranty might be worthwhile?

Am I the only one who detests running with his phone? I'll ride with it of course but not run.

I noticed my left arm was getting sore in the spot where I'd wear the arm band with my phone.

Now I'm just wearing my belt for every run and putting the phone in there. It doesn't bother me and helps me get used to it for the race anyway.

Those shorts look like something I might try, though. That would be nice.

Actually thinking about getting an arm band for my phone.  I don’t ever run with anything on me, but I run in the middle of nowhere at night and it’s Florida.

ETA: The FlipBelt is intriguing

:loco: dude. You run like super long too. I haven't ran with water in a while but that's because I've stayed under 10 this summer.
I am usually within 3-4 miles of a water fountain. I haven’t run many long runs so far this year, but that will change in about 4 weeks.

Dude, you are starting to sound like me. We only need one wishy-washy wank here.

I love how chill most of your responses are because of your avi. It helped that Oz also called you dude. If only you didnt like the Eagles too...

I bruised 2 toes on my left foot.     Heading to Daytona for the long weekend with a couple of beach runs.  This is truly one of my favorite places to run.

12 year old had his first cross country meet today. They had a 1 mile time trial for their middle school team so they could place the kids in the appropriate mileage/group for their future meets. They ran it after a high school meet, so they had their uniforms on, timing chips, the whole bit. He was of course a little bit nervous, but I just told him:

Run your race. Push it when you can, and try and race this. Not just run it.

So the kids are lined up, and the starter goes out in front of them to fire the gun. He raises his arms, pulls the trigger....and.....nothing.   So he regroups, starts the procedure all over again, raises his arms, pulls the trigger....and......nothing.

Finally, he roots around, pulls a whistle out of his pocket, and gets the race started. While I was standing there, I had my Tom-Tom on, because I was going to just get his time so I had an idea of where he was at the end. I'm standing there, HR is at 61 just standing there, and as soon as this guy begins the starting proceedings, my HR jumps to 89.   Clearly I'M ready.

The guy goes off, and the first section is downhill. We had done enough runs together where he knows - kill the downhills and save a little energy on the uphills. This is his first race, so I was interested to see his execution. I was positioned about .4 miles from the starting point, and as it looped around he would pass me and then pass me again coming home.

After the initial rush down the hill, the next bit is a long uphill. He is nice and steady up this stretch, so I'm there to encourage him on. Mom was down the hill, so she had seen him already. She was at the finish line, and I was positioned up from the finish line, so he would see me coming back down the hill toward the finish.

He passes me going up the hill and disappears over the horizon. So now I'm sitting there waiting. After about 9 minutes, we still haven't seen the rabbits come back. The leaders should have been long past, but something isn't right. At that point I realize - this course ain't 1 mile.

In a few seconds, they start coming over the hill. Several minutes after that, I see my son. As he's coming down the hill, I shout out to him:

"You are downhill. Time to push the pace. Your heart rate is gonna go down here. You got this." After the words came outta my mouth, I realized what a nerd I am. Thanks @Ned.

And he then starts to fly. He starts pumping the pace, so I start following about 15 yards behind. He is pushing hard here - by my watch he was running an 8:00 pace for the last .30 of a mile. Just killing it. He crosses the line at 18:05.

We find out later the course was measured at 1.86! . Just a bit off.

His pace: 9:43/mile

His previous best when we were doing our previous running was 12:23! :headbang: When I told him this later, he had the best smile his face. I'm not sure he thought he did that great, but I assured him that he smoked his previous best. And THAT'S what he is racing against.

A good day.

Do you usually stop to drink these days?

That’s one of my biggest changes over the years. I used to always drink a lot and never strayed too far from home so I could refill. Now, I hardly ever drink. I’ll sometimes bring a bottle on long runs (20 oz., I think) put don’t always finish the bottle.  Morning running makes this easier to do, I think.

I never drink anything on my runs. The only time I do is on Saturdays when I venture out over 14 miles.

Logged 53 miles in August.  Thats my highest mileage since Nov 2016.  Plus I had 1 or 2 bike rides each week.

I feel like I can do more, but trying to keep it in the 10-15% increase rule.  Probably not necessary for guys like me though.

Runs are all feeling good, even in the muggy condition.

Looking at the long range I kinda want to do 7.9 tonight to a) get to 200 for August and b) justify less mileage between tomorrow and...well, late September apparently.

I get that you southerner's are big on sharing, but you can shove this humidity up your ###.

281 miles for me for August.  I ran every day and it's my first consistent month since I was marathon training this winter and spring.

Although I've sometimes ran over 300 mile months, I'm surprised with how much ground I regained so quickly.  In fact, my mile repeats workout yesterday was faster and not as terrible as I've ever done before.  I was a little apprehensive about this early September 5K with Tri-man and Brony but now I feel like I have a legitimate PR shot.

Sick. Briefly, how was the progression to ‘needing’ less rest days or do your easy days really give you the rest you need?

Yes, the latter is my opinion.  An easy 6 mile day is enough recovery.  When I start taking days off, I notice my average heart rate goes up pretty quickly.

Also, it helps that I rarely pre-decide on a specific pace for a run.  If I feel more tired, I run slower.  If I feel fresher, I pick it up.  My body knows, I just have to listen to it.

I'm experiencing it right now and while I'm nowhere near where @Juxtatarot is I'm starting to feel the same.  I started taking rest days when my body said to after 16's marathon and once recovered from Spring 18's marathon I've noticed it takes longer and longer to get to that point.  Granted my easy days are a whole lot easier than his though.

I'm a little late to the discussion here, but I absolutely love the Plantronics Backbeat Fit:

  • Bluetooth, 6-8 hour battery life
  • Hooks over my ears and never falls off when hiking/running
  • Not in-ear (I hate in-ear) so I can hear them but also hear my surroundings
  • Water-resistant
  • Good for phone calls
I had one pair that I put through the wash accidentally but they still work (left ear audio is a little lower in volume than the right as a result, though).  So I bought a second pair.  Best running headphones I've ever used and it isn't even close.
