Ran a 10k - Official Thread (5 Viewers)

Speaking of the wife, signed her up today for just the "safety" component of Strava Premium.  $2/month, and I can track her when she's out running.  Makes me feel better about a lot of the evening runs that she does solo, especially after the whole Mollie Tibbetts thing.

Merde alors!  How supportive has she been of your tri training?  Given the training commitment, this was in all likelihood a bad move on your part ...but maybe she'll be good with it.  ("A late summer weekend in Quebec?  What fun, JAA!!")  Just in case, tell her you ordered a Medium race shirt and you're going to give it to her.
Funny ... I did that when booking. Booked an Airbnb that sleeps 12 for August 16-21. Secretly inviting other family and make it a “family event”!that I happen to participate in a Ironman.

PS - I couldn’t believe how expensive these Ironman events are !!!

Definitely appreciating the value of proper fueling and hydration.

Previously, I don't think it mattered much for me since I never ran longer distances nor did I do much in the heat.  After that difficult long run a couple weeks ago, I learned from it and had a much better run last week.  Heading into my pace run yesterday, I didn't pay as much attention to it as I should have and suffered as a result, not being able to finish the workout as planned (not to mention the heat/humidity was brutal).  So I made sure I got loads of carbs yesterday, drank plenty of water last night, got a good night's sleep, and then hydrated again this morning before heading out.

Despite this being my highest weekly total ever (37 miles for this week and 48 over the last 8 days) and finally doing the long run on the heels of a speed workout (even if only part of it), I felt wonderful this morning.  Heat/humidity still there with an SI of 150 but I got out early enough to beat the sun and was able to just run comfortably.  HR stayed below <155 for the first 6 miles and averaged 156 total for the whole run which is great for me.  Legs felt good until the end when they were getting fatigued the last mile or 2 (especially on the hills).  It's my biggest concern with this HM coming up as that 10th mile has a mile long uphill.  But I think I'm getting more comfortable with these longer distances and how to manage them.

Drank 12 oz around mile 4.5 (both 6 oz bottles and refilled them at the same time), then drank them again over the next 3 miles and that seemed to work well.  I probably could have stood to rehydrate once more towards the end as that may have led to the last couple miles feeling a bit tougher, but I otherwise felt really good for most of the run.  Since getting home, I've drank close to 30 oz of water and the MM smoothie and I'm still down 6 lbs. It's nuts.

Anyway, time to cut down this week, enjoy Vegas for a few days later this week and see how the 10K goes in 1 week.

Next long run I'm going to try some fuel with water and see how that goes.  Also going to try some Gatorade before the run as well.

Oh, and the new headphones were ultra comfortable.  The sound was a little wonky halfway as it was changing as I stepped but I think I need to try the foam eartips that came with it.  But still, really happy with them.
Please don’t forget your electrolytes. If not, we may need to helicopter you.

Haven't ventured in this thread before, but I got the urge to train for a half marathon. Not sure why. I haven't done any serious running since my last season of high school XC, about three years ago. I've started training and have been running for a couple weeks now, but I'm having an uncomfortable problem that maybe you folks can lend some insight to.

Saturdays are my long distance days. On Saturday #1, I ran 6 miles - it was really tough, but didn't feel overwhelming. About one hour after I finished, however, I started to get *terrible* bloating and lower stomach pain. Some of the worst stomach pain I've ever experienced. I did some googling to find out why, but found nothing conclusive. Lots of typical "stay hydrated and eat right" stuff, so I made sure to pay close attention to that leading up to my next Saturday run. Last night, Saturday #2, I set out for another 6 miles - once again, the bloat and stomach pain started about an hour after my run. Wasn't so severe this time, but was still very unpleasant.

What gives? I haven't had any of these issues after my lower distance runs, and never experienced anything like this after my long runs during XC. If I have to deal with this after any run of 6+ miles, this is going to be brutal. Have any of you experienced something like this? If so, what did you do to fix it? TIA

Agree. Something was off with mine all week. Not sure why - my guess is the copious amounts of meat and booze I drank on my fishing trip last weekend.

Don’t worry about it. I get that feeling this year every time when Chiefs season is about to start.

I don’t know. Have you considered a hernia?

How much are you drinking before, during and after your long runs? Are you wearing anything around your midsection such as a water belt? How long does the pain last?

@bud29 - are you in the KC area? I’m thinking of a fall half just to mix up my training. Would be happy to run with you if you are close.
Hey, really appreciate the offer!  I'm in Lawrence (going to school at KU), so close-ish to KC but still a little ways away. Not even sure I'll be racing this fall, since I'm totally starting from scratch - I've been eyeing some spring '19 races, particularly the Garmin marathon in Olathe (4/13). Will officially pick a race date when I'm closer to being ready.

I have not considered that, yikes. Will have to look into it.

-I need to actually measure my water intake before and after runs - right now, I just drink until my pee is clear.

-During my long runs I have not consumed any water, because I didn't remember drinking during my XC long runs. On second thought, however, we definitely had a water stop halfway through the course. I need to fix this.

-Not wearing anything around my midsection.

-The pain lingers for about an hour or two. The bloating usually remains until the next morning.

Eating or drinking anything in particular before these runs?

Back to a “normal week” of training, about 10 1/2 hours and 7k of climbing. Did 4+ miles with the pup this morning, we’re starting to figure out how to get more running in when we hit the trails. Dropped him off, grabbed the pack and the poles, and headed back up the hill for a 3 hour effort. Now, it’s time to chill by the pool and enjoy an adult beverage or three.

Last night I had a grilled chicken sandwich and a spinach salad with water for dinner, around 7:00. Had a couple more glasses of water before my run at 9:30. Last week I honestly don’t remember, but I know it was probably something less healthy. Haven’t been doing this “eating right” thing for very long.

My 2gb iPod Shuffle 2nd gen that’s about ten years old has been my running rock.  That little silver $20 refurbed thing must weigh 2 ounces and has basically been on every training run with me since I got it.  Toss it in my pocket and don’t even know it’s there...except the past couple weeks when it keeps randomly shutting off.  Now iTunes won’t even recognize it.  So I busted out my wife’s exact same blue Shuffle that has dust on it and it doesn’t work either.  Since they’re discontinued, they cost like $200 now.   :lmao:   Anyone with a small running MP3 player they’d recommend?  The cheaper the better.

Oh, and I snagged my headphones while mowing the lawn yesterday and now only get sound out of one ear.  Waiting for a sole to fall off one of the shoes I plan to wear on Friday.  #raceweek  :kicksrock:

Vinyl down?

If you have mp3 tunes, the Sansa clip is a comparable item to ipod shuffle.

I eventually switched to smartphone while running for the GPS tracking and strava, and bigger song collection in Spotify.

Thanks for the heads up on the Sansa.  Think I briefly looked at that on Amazon.  I’ll check into it further.

I want a stand alone player because unless I go on 2+ hour runs and bring my pack, then I don’t typically carry my phone.  Also even when I do carry my phone with, I prefer on long runs/races to not drain the battery running music.

Also, based on the recs here, I ordered the FlipBelt and it just came in today.  I think it's going to be a gamechanger.  Ridiculously comfortable, phone fits fine (I have a Galaxy S8+) as well as other things.  Will give it a go on my run tomorrow but I don't even know I'm wearing it after a couple minutes.  I also plan on using it when I head to Italy next month as a way to keep things on me while I'm traveling.  Thanks so much for the suggestion.

I think @bushdocda mentioned the curved water bottles with it.  How do you like those?  Does it weigh it down?  Comfortable if the bottle is cold?  Easy to get in and out during a run?  Carry more than 1 bottle?

How many days until you buy this too?

Regular plastic bottle would work but curved one turned in is even less noticeable

Does it weigh it down?

not really

Comfortable if the bottle is cold?

Easy to get in and out during a run?

Can be a bit tricky I guess, I turn the belt to side or front so I’m not reaching back on the run

Carry more than 1 bottle?

prob could do one in front one in back but might need to leave the phone

Hey bud!  Welcome to the thread.  I wish I had a clear answer regarding your issue, but like the others, I'm kind of stumped.  I have some bloating after swimming because of the air I take in, but I can't see how breathing during a run would lead to air in the belly (like eating too fast).  Lower stomach seems like intestines, which seems to be a digestive issue.  How, um, regular are you?  Do you poop before the long runs?  Do you need to go later on after the long runs?  Another thought, what do you do after those runs?  Maybe you need to do some standing, stretching, and movement so the lower GI doesn't get bottled up.

Haven't noticed any problems in that department. Do you poop before the long runs? Not immediately before, no. Maybe a few hours or so, I haven't really paid attention. Do you need to go later on after the long runs?  No, not until the next morning. Another thought, what do you do after those runs?  Maybe you need to do some standing, stretching, and movement so the lower GI doesn't get bottled up.    Possibly - I usually walk a half mile for my cooldown, but then I collapse on the floor to do stretches and I sit there a while. Might be good to keep moving a little bit longer.
Thanks for the welcome! Put my replies in bold. Also, I found this before my run tonight and I feel like it may be relevant to me:

I’ve done some digging and it looks like there are several causes of bloated belly from running:

-Your body responds to exercise as a stressful event… triggering the adrenal gland and releasing cortisol. Cortisol signals to your body to retain water, which can lead to bloating.

-Insufficient amount of carbohydrates and protein (note, this is rare)

-Eating too much food while running

-Not drinking enough water —> causing your body to retain more water than it needs

Most likely, #1 is the cause of it. This can occur in new runners and also people who have taken a bit of time off, so your body forgets that running is a feeling that you like.

So, what can you do to fix it?

1. Don’t overstress your body by going too hard or too far.
If you are a new runner, your body doesn’t know how to react to running. It’s wondering what in the world this feeling is, and why you will feel some awesome physical benefits, your body may be stressed initially. Make sure you ramp yourself up as you start running to ease your body into it.

In addition, if you haven’t run for awhile (either due to injury or a break), don’t go too far when you’re ramping back into it. This will stress your body out too.
Having just started, the 6 mile runs may be shocking my system a bit - not sure. I know in XC, we got lots of 3/4 mile runs under our belt before doing long distance days. I've been starting with a lot more mileage because my race distance is so much longer, but perhaps I should've still eased into this more.

Solid option.  I have a Fenix 5, and really can’t emphasize how much I like it. Love the durability, accuracy, and most importantly for the long battery life in GPS mode.  So I don’t think I’d make the switch to an Apple Watch just for the music especially since I think I want to stick to wired headphones (not Bluetooth) so I have one less battery life concernvto worry about during races.  As an aside, the new Fenix 5 Plus has the ability to play songs as well andvan even longer battery life.  The watch is silly expensive though, and early reviews are noticing quite a few bugs.

I hear ya. The Apple Watch is really expensive too and the battery life absolutely sucks. My wife bought me a Garmin last Christmas, so I wear 2 watches. I shut off the GPS and everything else on the Apple Watch, so the battery lasts longer. I track my runs with the Garmin. I still like this better than having to carry a phone or having wires.

Hopefully that's it.  It sounds like something easy to overcome.  Instead of easing into the mileage, what about the pace?  Are you running at an easy pace or pushing it?

I've been pushing pretty hard, or at least as hard as I can for someone who hasn't run in a few years. My most recent long run was at an 8:50 pace, not much slower than my 3 and 4 mile runs that week (8:30 and 8:40 pace). Might be a good idea to slow that down a bit as my body acclimates to being a runner again.

Fixed!  When you finish a long run, you should be able to stand there with your hands on your hips, admiring the excellent training that has occurred.   :D

About to make this move.  Thinking about ditching my Garmin 620 all together.  The only benefit I can see right now is that it has and the watch doesn't is cadence.

Had one of there "WTF am I doing" moments the other day.  My pre-run routine overwhelmed me.   I have blue tooth headphones, HRM chest strap, Garmin watch, apple watch (easier to control music),  I take my phone to use spotify (its hooked to an arm strap), I take my dog most days so I have her on a leash that goes around my waist.  I think I'm that guy.

I used to not even run with music.  Honestly I didn't realize i could put music on the watch with the other day.

I still like using the garmin website, but apple watch moves everything to Strava seamlessly.

181 SI when we mountain biked yesterday.  I can’t recall ever being so fn hot. I sweat off 6# before accounting for breakfast and whatever fluids I chugged.

I’m probably dusting off the tourturemill today. :X

For the readers in the group, suggest picking up Play On, Jeff Bercovi

Just started it yesterday but it's about how athletes age, how we can slow down the aging process, etc.

It's right up our alley.
Dammit, I have SO MANY books like this and not enough time to read any of them, but I'm sure I'll buy this one, too.

Recently finished Endure by Alex Hutchinson.  Not an easy read, but a good one.

I'm off to the gym for a particularly nasty torturemill workout over lunch.  Quarter-mile repeats, half-mile repeats, AND hills.  I pity the unfortunate soul running next to me...   :X
