For real. I legit need to sit in the air-conditioned lobby for like 20 minutes post-workout so I can stop sweating...

Lately it's taking me almost an hour before I can shower and not come out still sweating.  I wish it only took 20 minutes to stop.

 
I don't know if my run streak is going to die at 31 days or 32, but I have a feeling between work, extra curriculars, and whatever that is outside that this may be the end of this line.  A new high by 11 or 12 in a row?  Go, me.

 
Last night I had a grilled chicken sandwich and a spinach salad with water for dinner, around 7:00. Had a couple more glasses of water before my run at 9:30. Last week I honestly don’t remember, but I know it was probably something less healthy. Haven’t been doing this “eating right” thing for very long.
Ive never heard of this.

You might consider trying running in the morning and at lunch to see if the same thing happens.  Might just be your metabolism is slowing and that's dinner talking to you.

 
My 2gb iPod Shuffle 2nd gen that’s about ten years old has been my running rock.  That little silver $20 refurbed thing must weigh 2 ounces and has basically been on every training run with me since I got it.  Toss it in my pocket and don’t even know it’s there...except the past couple weeks when it keeps randomly shutting off.  Now iTunes won’t even recognize it.  So I busted out my wife’s exact same blue Shuffle that has dust on it and it doesn’t work either.  Since they’re discontinued, they cost like $200 now.   :lmao:   Anyone with a small running MP3 player they’d recommend?  The cheaper the better.

Oh, and I snagged my headphones while mowing the lawn yesterday and now only get sound out of one ear.  Waiting for a sole to fall off one of the shoes I plan to wear on Friday.  #raceweek  :kicksrock:
i dunno, all these issues your having your best course of action may be to simply give up running.

 
Man, it was looking crazy for my 10K on Sunday in the forecast with temps in the high 80's and dew points in the low 70's at race start (9am).  Now, it's updated to thunderstorms and dew point should be coming down.  As of right now, looking at 67 degrees and 64 dew point at 9am on Sunday.  I'll take it.

But the rain.....

 
I hear ya. The Apple Watch is really expensive too and the battery life absolutely sucks. My wife bought me a Garmin last Christmas, so I wear 2 watches. I shut off the GPS and everything else on the Apple Watch, so the battery lasts longer. I track my runs with the Garmin. I still like this better than having to carry a phone or having wires.

It was wishful thinking.  Waited a solid half-hour and then had to shower so I could get back to work.  Was still sweating walking out of the gym... :shrug:

Last night I had a grilled chicken sandwich and a spinach salad with water for dinner, around 7:00. Had a couple more glasses of water before my run at 9:30. Last week I honestly don’t remember, but I know it was probably something less healthy. Haven’t been doing this “eating right” thing for very long.
Everybody's stomach is different, but just thinking about a salad 2 hours before running makes my butt want to shoot off some fireworks.

I'd probably be less wet in a thunderstorm than most days here. 

 
So we moved earlier this summer and out of the blue HGTV called our realtor.  Won't bore you with too many details, but they want us to be on this show called Lakefront Bargain Hunt.   The wife and I don't have the personalities to pull off being on TV, but the realtor is a good friend and it would essentially be a huge free ad for him.  

We did this casting video a few weeks ago...just practically BS'ed them the whole time.  We watched one episode the other night and they want people that are active with water sports and what not.  They'd feed us questions and tell us answer like, " oh yeah, we always love to get out on the water and kayak or run and ride bikes around the rec trail by the lake."  Of course they said, if we get picked they want to film us doing these things.  

And of course they called today and said we had been picked.  They'll film in October.

I watch this show a fair amount  :bag:  but mostly to fall asleep.   I can help coach you up if you need it.  The key for the guy is to walk into any new room and have a canned basic observation delivered in a boring monotonous way.  Here is your script:

"Oh, they have new appliances in here"

"I like the tiles in this room"

This process has made me question everything HGTV now.  By the time they film we'll have been in this house for over 3 months!  We'll basically have to go look at other houses and pretend to like them.  

Think we'll go look at other "rival" communities and dog their schools or something petty like that.  

My go to line is going to be "I really like it, but there no man cave!" 

But in the end I'll "compromise".  Make me look like the good guy.

I wouldn’t be feeling too great running after dinner no matter what it was. Hope it’s simple fix of different timing of run or food to provide some relief.

:lmao:  I see. I try to have a salad with dinner most nights, and there aren’t any problems until I do a log run. Will try some different things out to see what helps.

I think I found your problem. Try doing a long run. 

 
Love trying to squeeze a workout in less than 4 hours before leaving to fly out.  But I knew if I didn't get it done today, then it likely wasn't happening and today was a perfect day to get one more workout before the race.

Workout called for 3x1600's at race pace.  I added the workout by that distance to the Garmin and headed out to the track.  Limited with time as I still had to go pick up my youngest from school and was cutting it close.  Short 1/2 mile warmup from where I parked and then hit the track.  Now, I'm not sure where I'm off as I thought each lap around was 400m but apparently it's not.  My watch was setup to keep me between 8:00 and 8:10 for 1600m but as I'm about to finish my 4th lap the watch beeps into my recovery lap a good 5-10 seconds before I'm about to hit the lap mark on the track.  So I'm fumbling with the watch trying to get it off the recovery portion and back and now it's on the 2nd lap.  Oh well. 

But as I'm walking the start of the recovery I'm now trying to figure out what's going on.  Is the pace/distance off on the watch?  Is it a mile?  Does that mean I'm too slow or too fast?  I had no idea so at this point I just said "#### it" and I'm going to just run the same thing and call it a day.  Anyway, the lap stuff on my Strava run is kinda off although it seems the distances are right.  I'm not sure what it is. 

Turns out I ran my 1st 1600 at 7:25, the 2nd one at 7:38, and the last one at 7:48 when I decided to trust the pacing on the watch.  All of them were still faster than my planned 8:00 but they were surprisingly easy for me.  Especially the 1st one felt really, really comfortable (admittedly the last one was the hardest despite being the slowest).  But considering the heat (SI of 157), I'll take it. 

Of note, I had to take Monday off.  Another rough night at work on Sunday (some nasty stuff going around right now) with no sleep and I was just completely run down.  It wasn't worth getting out in the heat another day.  Felt SO much better yesterday, ran a refreshing 3 slow miles and subsequently felt really good for the workout today.  Overall, I'm surprised at where I am as things seem to have taken a positive jump of late.  The workout today was especially encouraging as I've yet to hit a good pace run and today was close to that. 

Well, flying in a couple, will try and get some Vegas strip runs in and then we'll see how Sunday goes. 

ETA -- So what is 4 laps around the track?  1600m or 1 mile?

It's 1,600 meters, but for all practical intents and purposes, it's the same thing; a mile is 1,609 meters. 

It obviously also depends on what lane you're running in.
Yeah, I was running in lane 1 so it should have been right.  If you look on Strava, and you go to the laps tab, look at my 3rd lap.  It ended the 1600m at the beginning of the straightaway.  It wasn't that close and I ran along the inside the whole time as I was the only one there.  The next couple short segments weren't as far off, but still.

My track workouts also measure short although much closer than yours.  My hypothesis is GPS handles straightaways much better than curves.

On the topic of funky GPS stuff, over the last week my watch has suddenly started having me lose a few hundred feet in net elevation every run even though I start and stop at my home.  Very odd because elevation has always seemed reasonable before.  I don't have an explanation.

You are right but, hey, he gives evidence of my hypothesis above:

The accuracy of all devices is better in a straight line than on curves or twisty routes. My course is a tough test for GPS devices with many curves and only a few relatively straight sections.
 Running on airport runways will be more accurate than up, down and around a mountain.  I think we road runners are used to it being more accurate than a trail runner like you.  Most officially measured 5Ks that I've run have been very close -- 3.10 to 3.15 -- and I should be over since I don't run perfect tangents.  Also, I've never measured short on any officially measured course (except the track) but I have measured short on other courses.

Well I'm pretty bummed, it's looking like no excuses for me on Friday with near perfect weather in the forecast.  Highs in the mid 60's and lows in the low 50's.  Gorgeous.  Still need to do a bit of packing before heading up to the north shore tomorrow, but starting to get some jitters for Friday morning's 8am race start. 

This race is easily broken down into quarters.  First 25 miles are reasonable when compared to the race as a whole.  The goal is to get to Silver Bay at mile 25 in decent shape and do no minimal harm, because the following 26 miles are a #####.  That's the section that kicked my ### in 2016.  Lots of tricky terrain, plenty of climbing, and typically the heat of the day to deal with.  Once I get through that 2nd quarter and hit mile 51, nightfall will be upon me but I'll be picking up my pacer to get me through the night.  My pacer is my same buddy who picked me up in 2016 at Mile 51 in 31st place and moved us up to 14th through the course of the night over the next 35 miles.    He's planning to take take us through those exact same sections again, where he's planning to drop off partway into that last quarter at Mile 85 (Temperance River) just as *presumably* daylight is upon us.  From there the change from my 2016 race will be that I'll have no pacer for the last 18 miles.  Not going to lie...that's going to suck. The largest climb of the race awaits straight out of Temperance, and the remainder of the race is no cake walk.  But regardless, it'll be all mentally downhill from there if we get to Mile 85.

I'm in reasonable shape, though far from ideal.   I'm hoping to run at least as fast as I did two years ago, which was 27:22.  That was my first 100 miler, but I was better trained that year than I am currently.  Now?  Experience.  At least that's what I'm banking on.  :whistle:    I *think* I'll be disappointed if I don't run at least 27:22, but admittedly my 2016 race went almost flawlessly and anything can happen on this trail.  Here is my pace chart that I'll be carrying with me.  Should give you a good idea of what type of pace I'm on at any given aid station.  I did notice that reported times at the first aid station was waaaay off two years ago, I'm sure due to the volume of runners through in such a short amount of time so my pace card is when I actually hit that aid station.  I've got my 2016 time into each aid station on there from when I ran 27:22, as well as some average aid station times from last year for those runners that ran in roughly 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29 hours.  And by God if I need to reference the last column please intersect me out on the trail and push me off a cliff.  Also included for personal reference the number of minutes I spent in each aid station two years ago, and my goal for each aid station this year.  Hoping to shave some time by being more efficient in and out.  All that said, I just need to finish.  The field seems markedly faster this year than any year I can remember, so it'll be fun to see the top guys this year.  My prediction with the perfect record is that the 19:30 course record falls. 

So here's where I'm at.  I quit a 100 mile race last summer...at Mile 78.  I was totally untrained.  I was mentally beat down starting 25 miles into the race. It was wet and muddy, followed immediately by hot and humid.  I had chaffing so bad I had to hold the sack away from my legs for the last 10 miles.  In hindsight, those were all just excuses.   I could have finished that race.  It would've sucked, yes.  Badly.  But not as bad as that feeling the next day of a DNF knowing that I could have finished.  Unless I break or tear something this weekend, or I get pulled from the race by someone other than myself, that's just not happening again.  Not.  Happening.  That's what I've been promising myself and I'm putting it out there for public shaming if I don't uphold that.  Figure that's more fuel for the mental resolve fire when the #### hits the fan.  And it will.

I've asked around to see if there are other places to run while staying on the strip and the answer I've got has been "Strip only". VMMV.  Sucks when you try running anytime besides morning but on the plus side, lots of Strava segments and stair workouts. 

 
Got the crud going around.  I’m guessing I was exposed to too many people in Daytona.  My lungs have been on fire.  Good times, but no running.   :thumbdown:

 
Just officially signed up for my first half marathon, on the Vegas strip on November 11. My brother lives out there so it’s also a good excuse to go visit. Got two more months to get ready which should be plenty.

And I'm pretty sure I didn't run that first 1600 at 7:25. It had to be more like 7:40ish. Knowing that inaccuracy, that makes sense.  But damn my watch for making me think I'm faster than I am!
