RANDOM OBSERVATIONS FROM THESCRIMMAGE SATURDAY NIGHT

coaching

The staff seems to be stressing the run and stopping the run. the scrimmage started out with 7 or 8 run plays and there was also a noticeable difference in the physical play in the trenches throughout the night.

QB's

- brett Favre didn't throw an interception :) and only forced one ball downfield. No doubt, the cannon arm is still there and he'll be doing his thing again...good and bad.

- Aaron Rodgers looked decent but the back-up players he was playing with couldn't catch the damn ball. It looked more like an issue with them, but i can't dismiss the possibility that rodgers isn't throwing a "catchable" ball.

- Ingle Martin ran into the fullback running to the line of scrimmage to take his first snap...and lost the ball on his first pass attempt, but he did look like a decent player after he calmed down. Welcome to the NFL rook.

RB's

- No Ahman Green or Najeh Davenport. Those two need to get healthy...word is they will be back soon.

- Samkon Gado looked okay. He could move the pile and scored on a TD in traffic but he seemed to be slow hitting the hole.

- Noah Herron looked quick and i was impressed with his vision. We'll see if he can keep the momentum going throughout camp.

FB's

- William Henderson is amazing, even at 90 years of age.

- Vonta Leach looked bad. Slow in the passing game and his blocking was nothing to write home about.

WR's

- Donald Driver and favre had nice chemistry hooking up on a long pass play as well as a slant for a TD.

- Greg Jenning doesn't look like a physical specimen but he looked like a player to me. Showed he wasn't afraid to go and get the ball in traffic as well as catching a TD pass during goal-line work. He was very impressive with his punt return work (but he did catch one inside the 5 yard line). No doubt he'll be the punt returner week 1.

- Rod Gardner looked lazy. He needs a fire lit under him if the packers are going to get anything out of him this year.

- Mark Boerigter didn't play much but when he did he created space. Made a nice catch to grab a TD against the 1st team defense.

- Corey Rodgers showed nice burst and big-play ability. Caught a long pass but looked lost at other times.

TE's

- Nobody stood out but the TE's were targeted a lot more than in past seasons. If Bubba Franks or David Martin stay healthy (Bubba didn't play tonight) they could put up with some decent numbers.

O-line

- Mark Tausher pass protected nicely but he wasn't getting off the ball on run plays as well. He even had a false start...unheard of for him.

- The left tackle spot is going to be a serious issue if chad clifton can't go. That position looked weaker than any other one on the field Saturday night.

- The interior of the line did a decent job. I guess that's a step up from last season.

D-line

- KGB looked like he was playing at a very high level. Made a few nice plays to pursue the run from behind and on pass plays he could not be contained. Real impressive scrimmage for him.

- Ryan Pickett and Kendrick Allen seemed to hold up in the trenches. A good sign for our run defense

- Normally late round Dlman don't do much. Johnny Jolly has a chance and showed some glimpses if he keeps his head on straight.

LB's

- I was impressed with Nick Barnett. He didn't dance around blockers and closed some running lanes by filling the hole with physical contact against the FB's and OLine.

- A.J. Hawk didn't stand out as much as i'd hope the #5 overall selection would. He looked much better in pass coverage than i was anticipating, but he looked like he was still looked like he was thinking rather than reacting.

- Abdul Hodge was the best player on the field during the scrimmage. He made impactful hits and showed great instincts. The packers got a steal in the 3rd round this season. He'll pass up Ben Taylor and end up starting at the 'sam' LB by week 4.

- The depth at LB looked greatly improved from just one year ago. Roy Manning looked solid and Brady Poppinga should be back soon too.

DB's

- Nick Collins looked good and was involved in the hit of the night...too bad it was him losing his footing and taking on a wall.

- Marquand Manuel didn't play but everytime they showed him on the sidelines he was working with the young DB's or discussing things with Collins or Underwood. He could end up being a real team leader if he makes enough plays to earn his teammates respect.

- Marviel Underwood just missed out on player of the night honors. He took great angles in run support and broke up a number of plays in coverage. Seemed to be in the right position at all times including a red zone INT.

- Ahmad Carroll had an okay scrimmage. No penalties but he did give up a TD against the 2nd team offense

- Tyrone Culver also had a nice night making a few impressive plays against the 1st team offense. Looks like the light bulb has already gone on for the rookie.

- #41 sucks and should be cut tomorrow. Looked it up: it's some bum named Jerron Wishom.

K's

- Billy Cundiff looked decent. His kickoffs were deep and he hit all of his short-mid FG's. He looked shaky on long FGA though.

- Doug Raynor is a good camp leg, but if Cundiff doesn't get the job done the Packers should go out and sign Paul Edinger before keeping this guy.

P's

- This CFL guy John Ryan has a huge leg and was very impressive. He'll win this job even with his red hair and bad mullett-like hairdo.

- B.J Sander did what B.J Sander does. He kicks the ball too high to get enough distance and he held for the back-up K as well...that can't be a good sign for him.

any questions let me know...

editted to clean it up a bit

This is te impression that Im getting from many people. Hawk simply isnt producing as many thought he would be, and rather Abdul Hodge is stealing the show. I certainly can buy that as I was very high on Hodge after seeing him play at Iowa multiple times last year. Kid has a explosive and non-stop motor and really I thought that going to the Pack would be an awesome fit at SAM. But for AJ Hawk to tentative in camp gets me a bit worried. After all, he was touted to be the most NFL ready both mentaly and physically.

maybe all the fans showed up because they wanted to see at least one home win this year and the intra-squad was a gimme

Didn't see your post before posting mine, but it's funny that we BOTH hit on the left tackle issue. They are in serious trouble there...

Good analysis and I would agree with those assessments. Some of my own, including some fantasy-related:

If people fall asleep on Driver in your draft, POUNCE. Let me repeat that: POUNCE. He is going to be a legit WR1 this season even if I'm lining up opposite him at WR. Mark my words on that (the part about Driver, not me starting for the Packers :D ).

I agree with Hodge being a steal. I said that in the Draft Day thread. I loved that guy at Iowa and I think the Packers flat-out stole him in the third round.

I also agree that Hawk looks like he's thinking instead of reacting. I expect that to change in time.

Jennings looks pretty good. It's still too early to judge and WRs tend to struggle early on in their careers in the WCO but he looks like a player. Those in Dynasty leagues should be keeping close tabs on him.

I thought Rodgers looked OK. He threw some nice balls that, as the original poster mentioned, his WRs didn't help him with at all. His passes didn't have much zip, though, but I thought he looked pretty poised for the most part. I did have to laugh when he spiked the ball after scoring a TD on a bootleg. Ummm Aaron, you scored because the defensive players aren't allowed to tackle you. :D

same Q as other pack thread, how did Ruvell Martin look?
He was targetted a few times while working with the 2nd offense. He didn't see any openings against the 1st team defense but found some space to work against the 3rd string defense late in the scrimmage.I'd be very surprised if Ruvell Martin contributed at all this season. He seems a year away if he can even make the team this year.

So who should the PACK pursue.... Porter, Lelie, or Stallworth???
None of the above. Greg Jennings looks like the real deal and should be able to hit the field across from Driver by the end of the season. Until then Robert Ferguson and some of the other vets can hold the spot down.

so is the latest thinking in packerland that hodge will be the SAM... just asking because there has been a lot of speculation that hodge's best fit would be at his more natural MLB position, & in interest of getting three best LBs on the field, the prevailing thinking was that hodge's dislodging of barnett from MLB to SLB could be imminent (which the homers are no doubt acquainted with... that was for the benefit of others reading this thread that may not be)...

Everything I've read says they are adamant that he will be staying behind Barnett at the Mike. Ben Taylor will start at SAM.Having said that, Hodge has taken the first step at making the staff rethink things...

Nick Barnett has great speed, but his weakness is taking on blockers. At this point Hodge is showing a lot, but putting him in at the middle and shifting Barnett to the strong-side wouldn't highlight Barnett's strength as a sideline to sideline playmaker. Just last season Barnett set an all-time Packer record for tackles in a season so his ability as the MLB is a known commodity.

I really think the future for the Packers at LB is Hawk, Hodge and Barnett. Those three LBs on the field together could be the foundation on which Green Bay's defense is built for the next several years.

Can't say I disagree.

Hey trader joke, did you get a chance to see LB Kurt Cambell? I know him. Im just wondering if hes even out there, because last year he was slated for playing time, but this year he seems to be buried on the depth chart.

The Packers LB core has a chance to be scary good. The talent is there...hopefully the defensive line does a better job of keeping the big uglies away from them this season. Part of the reason Barnett had so many tackles last season was due to the lack of plays made by the front 4.The defense as a whole was unable to force turnovers last season. Based on a handful of practices and this scrimmage I can only see an improvement in 2006 for the Packers defense. Charles Woodson and Al Harris are the type of ballhawks that can make some plays if some pressue is applied to the opposing QB.

I seem to remember seeing him in there at some point but that's about it. Nothing of note that I can recall, sorry.

Don't get too excited about Woodson. He'll cover well and make some good tackles, and then break a bone. I wasn't too excited about G.B.s defense, other than Hodge. Of course several players were sitting out.

You are 100% correct. When your team is coming off a 4-12 season even a 7-9ish looking defense can look great! :banned: Everyone is skeptical of Woodson for good reason...of course he wasn't playing tonight. It will all come down to the Packers defensive line and that position has a lot of question marks right now.

That would still represent a gigantic upgrade over Ahmad Carroll.

Kurt Campbell was in a few plays late in the game. Seemed ro run around a lot but not get the tackle. He was in though. #52 right.

The latest update from the Milwaukee J-S: Wide receiver Ruvell Martin, a free-agent wide receiver from Saginaw Valley State, was in training camp with the Chargers each of the last two seasons before being waived. At this point, Martin appears to rank anywhere from fifth to seventh among the 11 wideouts on the Packers' roster.

"I think he's made great strides," Jagodzinski said. "You look at the film and you see No. 18 (Martin) and No. 85 (Greg Jennings) making plays. He's a talented football player. He's got a real chance."
