Ranking Led Zeppelin Songs - Request To Participate (1 Viewer)

Without giving anything away what two songs were you surprised with your ranking.  High and low.

High - Communication Breakdown

Low - Rock and Roll
Not sure about low, but I always forget how much I like The Rover until I hear it again.

I personally lean towards the older Zeppelin songs.  To my untrained musical ears, I think Plant’s vocals are better on the earlier albums.  That being said, there are still some great songs on the later albums like Ten Years Gone which is high in my personal rankings.
I agree on Plant's vocals. Seemed much stronger on the earlier albums.

Not sure if there would be any interest, but for those that have already submitted a list (as it wouldn't be fair if you submit one after this idea), anyone interested in doing a pool to see who had the most songs on their list that make up the consensus top 25? Could be something like $5/person, most songs takes the pot?
I would probably end up last.

That starts to get too complicated. I thought of who had the most in the right position as well.

But ultimately, there will be a top 25 generated from all the lists. I think it would be cool to recognize the person that had the most number of those 25 on their list.

I think something like 15 songs might win it, too.

meh, completely defeats the purpose imo.

I'm not trying to match the masses - I'm trying to think about how these songs hit me "back when" and how they hit me now ...and then balance those.

You're proposing that there is a "right" position for each of these songs.

gross.

ETA:  This is really hard - so many bunched up together for me ...can't even get it down to 25 yet ...after about 6 hours of going through this ...ugh

Yeah, unless you wanted to just donate a fiver to someone, you are best to sit this one out. Of the current Top 10 songs, you did not have 5 of them on your list. Don't feel bad . . . someone else only has 3 of the Top 10 on their list.

Did you submit your top 25 list of 63 songs yet?

Did you submit your top 25 list of 63 songs yet?

no.

yeah ...I get your point ...it's an "after" thing

I started today ...already spent quite a bit of time on it - just got back yesterday from a 5+ week "vacation"

ETA:  saw you unfollowed me on the twitter machine - come back and join the "bring back the potato cake rebellion"

get rid of the creepy clown.

Not that anyone should be "TRYING" to achieve this . . . but there currently are 3 people with lists that at this moment in time contain the current Top 10 ranked songs. However, there are songs bubbling under the Top 10 that are easily close enough to climb higher. Each of those rankers did not rank some of those songs just outside the Top 10. And I am also waiting on another 10-15 lists, so there could still be a lot of movement in the rankings.

I feel like my list was fairly “chalky” but there’s definitely a couple songs that I left out of my 25 that could be top-10.

not going to drop any other hints ...but I'll tell you that one of the top 3 ranked songs on any list you'll find - will not be on my list.

There have been 42 lists submitted so far. Only 1 list has 4 of the current top 5 songs ranked in the Top 5.
Probably me. I feel like most of my 25 were standard fare. I love a lot of the deep cuts, but not as much as their most popular songs.

I love all of the stats that goes along with this. I'm a nerd.

Keep em coming.

Can I do a list?

I have played so much LZ in my life, I don't even need a reference.  I can do it in my head.

It's done.  I'll just send it in.  🙂

I listened to the Zep albums so much when I was a teenager in the 80s that every second of every track is still burned into my brain all these years later. Which is why I submitted a list quickly. The extensive process that some of you have gone through fascinates me.
Took me about twenty minutes.  And that's just because I am slow at typing.  I may have forgotten one in my haste though.  Oh well.

I haven't quite finished my rankings but am close but it's going to be hard to keep a 2 for 1 off the list. You get 2 Zeppelin songs for the ranking of one. Hard to leave that off the list.
I left them off, the second would be in the 25-30 range.  I view them separately myself.

List submitted.

I have 558 Led Zeppelin songs in my library, so there was no way to listen to all of them. I did listen to all of the studio albums (except Coda) plus the B sides and listened to many songs a number of times to try to figure out downselecting and ordering.

It was really difficult to downselect the last 10 or so to get to 25 and also really challenging to order below the top 5. I iterated the final cuts and final order many times. As many have said, it would be different yesterday and different tomorrow.

My breakdown:

  • Led Zeppelin I - 3
  • Led Zeppelin II - 5
  • Led Zeppelin III - 2
  • Led Zeppelin IV - 3
  • Houses of The Holy - 4
  • Physical Graffiti - 6
  • Presence - 1
  • In Through The Out Door - 1
IMO no artist that ever had a run of albums as good as Led Zeppelin's first 6... and it was their first 6!  :tebow:

And to have their lesser albums be of the quality of Presence and ITTOD... I doubt any artist has matched a run of 8 of that caliber, either.

About my list:

  • I wouldn't be surprised if my list is the only with my #1 in that slot. I know it isn't on every list.
  • I expect I am the only one with my #4 in the top 10. I know it isn't on every list.
  • It is possible that my #8 song isn't in any other list.
Really enjoyed this.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, R.E.M. and Radiohead had pretty strong runs of records to start their careers.  And the Beatles did ok.  But yeah, LZ had quite a good run also.

Well, that wasn't as hard as I thought it was.  Quite enjoyable after I fired one up.

I- 5

II- 5

III- 1

IV -6

Holy- 3

Graffiti - 2

Door - 3

Over the last couple weeks, I keep getting different LZ songs stuck in my head. Some from my list, some not. Haven't minded this at all.

Yeah, I have this same problem having done the U2 rankings. I have Sweetest Thing stuck in my head. Problem is, I don’t love the song. Can’t get rid of it. Might need professional help and therapy. Getting really annoying. Listened to 4 hours of LZ yesterday in the car on a road trip. Got out of the car whistling Sweetest Thing. Make it stop!!!!

I saw U2 at a claw show.  I really dislike them now.  Almost Phish level dislike.  Sorry they are in your head.  Did you get my pm list last night?  Sorry about that initial mistake.  Good thing I caught it.  🙂 Did you guys ever so this with Radiohead?

Yes, got it. Thanks.

When the subject was first brought up Bruce and Metallica were the two not mentioned to immediately come to mind. I don't think either are in the same tier as Zep and the line is drawn at 5 albums for each, but I think they both had incredible noteworthy multiple album stretches to start their careers.

So I came into this as a rock fan who has grown to like Led Zeppelin more and more over the years, but wasn't a huge fan. The only album I had as a kid was IV which I love. Over the years I have downloaded Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti, but those are the only albums I have owned. I obviously had heard all of their hits from the other albums over the years, but had never really listened to the other albums in full. I really enjoyed doing that to come up with my list, and found several songs that I kind of knew but never really appreciated. I also really appreciate how good each of the members are musically, both individually and collectively as a band. If they are not the greatest rock band of all time, they are definitely in the top 2 or 3.

List Submitted a short time ago

I- 6

II- 4

III- 0 Strangely enough

IV - 3

Holy- 5 including my #1

Graffiti - 3

Presence - 2

Door - 2

I didn't notice I had nothing from that album until I tallied the list like others have.  III wasn't one of my favorite Zep albums anyway so it kind of makes sense to me.

It just goes to show how deep their catalogue is.  I was the same - I didn't pay attention to album when selecting and I've always been a person who doesn't pay attention to what album a song is on and I rarely played albums from beginning to end.  Anyway, I think I ended up with 7 from IV and only 2 from III.  I could easily have had 4 from IV and 5 from III.

Yep, lots of "just missed".  What album was your #1 from?

That could be me.

Just to kill some time while we wait for the rollout of the rankings:

The 40 Greatest Led Zeppelin Songs of All Time - this is Rolling Stone, so I'm not surprised that I don't agree much... they have 12 songs in their top 25 that didn't make mine

All 87 Led Zeppelin Songs, Ranked - this is a better list IMO... it has 6 songs in its top 25 that were not in my list

Will be interesting to see how the FFA rankings compare to others like these. I'm expecting better from this group!
