Ranking Led Zeppelin Songs - Request To Participate (1 Viewer)

SHOCKING NEWS on the rankings front. One song was SO FAR AHEAD in the rankings at one point that it was not even a consideration that any other song would end up at #1. We're talking LIGHT YEARS ahead in the balloting.

Lo and behold, with the most recent list that I received . . . WE HAVE A NEW #1 SONG. At least for now (it's only one point ahead).

Just to kill some time while we wait for the rollout of the rankings:

The 40 Greatest Led Zeppelin Songs of All Time - this is Rolling Stone, so I'm not surprised that I don't agree much... they have 12 songs in their top 25 that didn't make mine

All 87 Led Zeppelin Songs, Ranked - this is a better list IMO... it has 6 songs in its top 25 that were not in my list

Will be interesting to see how the FFA rankings compare to others like these. I'm expecting better from this group!
I will be including these rankings (and several others) in the write ups . . . so not really sure how much of all this stuff we want to discuss in here vs. the main thread once it's up.

60. “Poor Tom” (Coda, 1982)

A surprisingly enjoyable LZIII outtake, mixing Page’s shimmering Bron-Yr-Aur-era guitar lines with a “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”-like Bonham drum shuffle, and Plant’s octave-separated self-harmonizing (with one slammin’ harmonica solo at the end to boot). Lyrics are a little wife-murder-y, though, so maybe try not to pay those too much mind.🤣

With some swings in the rankings, there are now 7 lists that contain all of the current Top 10 songs. Two lists are tied for fewest Top 10 songs with 4 apiece.

I matched 12 of their top 25 on the first list and 13 on the second. I'm thinking about changing a couple of songs in my rankings so those numbers might go up by one or two songs.

What is the hard deadline here?  I'm having a re-think on a few songs...
All lists need to be in by the end of Sunday. Each change from now until then is a progressive $20, then $40, etc.

Obviously I am kidding, but I would much prefer you give me one updated list than changes everyday until then.

So I came into this as a rock fan who has grown to like Led Zeppelin more and more over the years, but wasn't a huge fan. The only album I had as a kid was IV which I love. Over the years I have downloaded Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti, but those are the only albums I have owned. I obviously had heard all of their hits from the other albums over the years, but had never really listened to the other albums in full. I really enjoyed doing that to come up with my list, and found several songs that I kind of knew but never really appreciated. I also really appreciate how good each of the members are musically, both individually and collectively as a band. If they are not the greatest rock band of all time, they are definitely in the top 2 or 3.
My Mount Rushmore:

Rush

Led Zeppelin

Pink Floyd

Porcupine Tree

If I'm going to change out a couple of songs on my list should I just let you know the couple of changes or is it easier to just submit the entire list again with said changes?

I made the change you ask for . . . but I am not looking forward to 50+ people sending me individual changes every 10 minutes. So yeah, save all the changes and send them to me or send me a new list.

ETA: I think I am confusing you with someone else . . . but the explanation is still the same. Would prefer to make one set of changes and not multiple changes to lists.

Sent a change. Won’t touch it again

Gotta be my number 19.  I always felt it was overrated, as was that record.

When the subject was first brought up Bruce and Metallica were the two not mentioned to immediately come to mind. I don't think either are in the same tier as Zep and the line is drawn at 5 albums for each, but I think they both had incredible noteworthy multiple album stretches to start their careers.
Bruce had my two favorites right off,

Greetings from Asbury Park, and the Wild Innocent E Street Shuffle.  Then the monster Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, the River, Nebraska, and Born in the USA.  Nebraska is my weak link, but some like it best.  I dunno.

R.E.M is the goat when it comes to consecutive great records...WITH ELEVEN! WOW.

My list is done.  I did it from memory, and stayed away from any list or influence purposely.  But since I am done, I clicked on the second link just to see.  I only looked at songs 87-50, but I think that list is kinda trash already.  Not gonna bother going deeper.  I'll check the forty list, hopefully it's better.

Edited to add:  It's better, but not great.

I feel like I left sooo many off my list, including a biggie or two unintentionally left off (as opposed to the other biggie that I meant to leave off), but I'm going to leave it alone. I did my list very quickly instead of really thinking about it, but that let me include a few lesser-played songs that I truly like instead of saying "oh wait, I can't leave that one out".

Maybe I am wrong, but it seems to me you all are sleeping on the greatness of LZIII.

I just looked and I used five off it.  :) I left off TWO of the most popular (probably 30 AND 35 for me), and another one of my favorites left off I had just outside my 25.  The last song is the only bad one on the record fwiw.  Go play it through a few times if you can.  Greatness.

Just looked - I have three from III, with two in my top 10.

I included 2 songs from III, and 2 others were among my first 5 out.

I agree it is a great album, but IMO it still grades out as 6th best: II > IV >= PG > HOTH >= I > III

This is part of what I was getting at in earlier posts -- the strength of their first 6 albums. I'd put III up against any artist's 6th best album. And to genericize it, since not everyone would agree III is 6th best, I would put any of these 6 albums up against any artist's 6th best.

I really don't like PG fwiw.  I used four songs from it, all on the back half, and it's a double album.  My #13 probably isn't on most lists. It's a great tune. I would love to remove my #14 from my list completely at this point, but I said I wouldn't change things.  My #19 is in most's top ten, maybe five. And the other is just a good hard rock tune we all like.  The rest of this record is kinda trash.  Some good moments, but too long and boring overall.  I'm not sure I rank it as a great.  If I could chop it to a single and shorten a few tunes, then probably.

Anyway, my favorite records based on full listens are HOTH, III, II, IV, and I.  That changed a bit over the years.  The others I don't care for much.

Hey, everyone is entitled to their opinions, but your bolded statement is a little extreme for this thread. And wrong IMO. :boxing:

I said kinda...

It's the yard sale of LZ records.  All kinds of weirdness, that doesn't always work together. Most of it you just want to toss, but then you find a gem or two you forgot about.  But it's still a yard sale.

I only have 1 from Houses, 1 from Presence and 2 from PG. The rest are all from the first 4. Some of my toughest cuts on my list came from Houses and I was surprised I only had 1 from it.

Physical Graffiti is a great album but for me more for the sum of its parts than for individual songs. It's just a monster of an album, although I have some issue with the production on some songs where it sounds a little muddy and flat, with Plant a little too far back in the mix.

I do admit that PG has little flow to it compared to others.  It’s still a great album to me.  I think I have 6-7 from it in my list.

Everyone's favorite from PG is just so repetitive and to long for me. My brother loves the record....

But his music taste suxors lol.

You are making an assumption on what PG song is "everyone's favorite". Based on your comment and my assumption on which song you are referencing, I had 3 other PG songs above it in my list.

I love big sprawling records like this, especially when most of the songs are good, as they are here. I'm all for artists being ambitious if they have the skill to pull it off.

It is heavily represented on my list, and I left off one song from it* that is probably on a lot of people's lists.

* -- not Kashmir, which did make my list

TYG is my favorite on PG fwiw.  That other one seems to be on most of the online top five overall LZ song lists.  That was where "my assumption" came from. No other from that record is even close on the innerwebs

PIK95 - the problem is with the lazy AOR format.  They basically determined what you are going to listen to from Zep, Pink Floyd, The Stones, etc.  Some of the minor hits and deeper cuts don’t get played anymore, then the format dies.

TYG is also my favorite. I included 6 PG songs in my list, but the highest was at #15, so it dominated the bottom of my list.

As has been said many times in this thread, had I submitted the list the day before or the day after, the selections in the bottom 5-10 likely would have changed some, so on another day I might have had 4-5 from PG and 3-4 from III, for example.

I played these records non stop as a kid.  That's why I did my list in twenty minutes.  I remember when TRB and that other tune came out in the 90's.  They were decent, but we were so desperate for anything LZ that it was played non stop.  Same thing when I saw P&P.  Robert's voice was toast so they pushed certain tunes on the radio.  LZ1 was my favorite record for years fwiw.  But HOTH is now.

Ok, final list submitted: Break down:

I    4
II    5
III    3
IV    6
HOUSES    3
PG    2
DOOR    1
CODA    1

How the West was Won - 11 😲

I think it took me 30 min, one I regret leaving off now.

People can still make changes if they want. Some people have sent me notice they wanted to swap out a single song. Others have sent me completely different lists.

The top 2 songs overall have been alternating based on new lists . . . even with revised lists. It’s looking like a three horse race for the #1 song as we start down the home stretch.
