Ranking Led Zeppelin Songs - Request To Participate (1 Viewer)

We had a pretty good LZ Album thread with a pole (I think) but or the life of me I can't find it. 

My recollection was that I had

1. IV

2. II

then I'm unsure - probably something like

3. PG

4. I

5 HotH

6. III

Three is definitely in last of those 6 - decent argument could be made for 3-5 being in any order.

I don't doubt it. It's an epic tune that must have been incredible to create and to play live.

I had never heard of them but just listened to a live version of Arriving Somewhere But Not Here.  Pretty damned good.  I think I hear a good bit of R.E.M in that song as well as those you mentioned.

just sent @Anarchy99 my rankings - interested to see the results of everybody!  I leaned into the later stuff pretty hard - my first album was "Houses of the Holy" and then worked backwards.  Love it all, but when forced to choose - I tended to go with fewer of the old blues based stuff, but love it all.  

ETA:  for clarification, I bought "Houses of the Holy" when it came out in '73.  It was an important part of my small, but growing record collection.

I'm kind of in the same boat. 7 of my top 10 are from Houses or later. 

 
Well ...maybe I wasn't as much of a "newer LZ" guy as I thought.  I saw Bronco's split and applied the same and then added weightings (#1 ranked song = 25pts, #2 ranked song = 24pts, etc.)

LZ III / 1 / 17pts

LZ IV / 4 / 68pts

HOTH / 6 / 75 pts   ( :D there's 8 songs on the album)

Very interesting way to go about it.  I may do this while I drink my after work bourbon.

My breakdown:

  • Led Zeppelin II - 5 songs, 78 points
  • Led Zeppelin IV - 3 songs, 59 points
  • Houses of The Holy - 4 songs, 54 points
  • Led Zeppelin I - 3 songs, 51 points
  • Physical Graffiti - 6 songs, 36 points
  • Led Zeppelin III - 2 songs, 27 points
  • In Through The Out Door - 1 song, 18 points
  • Presence - 1 song, 2 points
 
I'm going to make a list of 10 or so songs that I think will be in the top 25 that I didn't include.  Like I said before, I think my list is "chalky" - I base that on a few things:

  • Majority of my list is from the big 6 albums
  • I don't have a lot of songs that a casual fan of LZ wouldn't know - so anybody who submitted a list and went with radio and popular plays will skew things.  One thing is for sure is that while LZ gets some decent play time, they have so many longer cuts that at least during my radio listening didn't get nearly as much attention as they deserved.
  • After I done with my rankings (but before I submitted) I went back and looked at like 10-12 different online lists.  Just to get a sense of where my list stood and to see if maybe there was a song I wasn't as familiar with that I wanted to give another chance.  There were 3-4 such songs and ultimately I didn't rank any of them.  I expect those 3-4 to be top 25 for sure.

So my casual ranking matches this almost exactly.  I think PG is "helped" by the sheer number of songs when I'm thinking of the albums as a whole.

Not that big a deal, plus you have enough to do,  

 
People can submit lists from other people if they want. Friends, wives, girlfriends, wives' girlfriends, relatives. drinking buddies, the neighbor down the hall, the mailman, the bagger at Kroger's, your parole officer, your bookie, etc. As long as you get me the lists by the end of the weekend.

How many songs did you guys end up ranking?

I only spent a lot of time on top 25 but I had a first 10 out.  I've had so much fun now I'm thinking about going back and ranking all of them to get an average ranking by song for each album.  I know IV will win in a landslide considering I have all 8 in my top 35 but curious how much the dead weight drags down the other albums.

 
Status update . . .

- 51 rankers so far . . . waiting on 9 lists (plus whatever other ones show up by the deadline).
- Expecting changes to 40 more lists because you guys are the definition of fickle.
- Now up to 76 songs.
- Now up to 23 different #1 songs.
- It's possible we get a song in the Top 10 that no one had as their top song.
