Ranking Led Zeppelin Songs - Request To Participate (1 Viewer)

I think it's a little different in that LZ's released about 80 songs when they were an actual band (not counting leftovers released after they disbanded) vs. 200+ Beatles songs. Fewer songs to choose.

So my first list ended up being a bit flawed - I simply downloaded a list of songs by number of plays in my library.  I figured, more plays = good proxy for my rankings.  First list had a little tweaking, but no effort to listen to the songs.

But, that had a big hole, since the single  album I play the most is How the West was Won - so that unnecessarily skewed the number of plays.

Also, I have 1345 Led Zeppelin songs, and another 197 from Page & Plant (Thanks mostly to @Anarchy99who provided a rather large library of concerts a few years ago), but within that, song names are slightly different for different versions of the same song).   Again, just sorting by number of plays was not helpful.

This morning, I started from scratch, and went album by album sampling every song (a few I knew were in the top-25, so I skipped those) - that got me to a list of 37 songs.  I got to 15 songs pretty easily.  Then for the rest, I gave a longer listen to, and put them in two piles: in or out.  I ended up having to cut 2 from my in pile, but then added one back later.

So I am comfortable that I have my top-37, and felt pretty good with how the top-25 ended up, but many in the bottom-10, or so, could easily have been replaced with the 12 that missed out.

That, to me, is insane.

Having said that, there is one song on IV that I will have rated higher than most - but is mostly because I love the version on How the West was Won.

But given the variety and depth of the album - its hard to fathom that no matter what style of Led Zeppelin you prefer you could not find multiple songs on that album.

Went way nerdier.  I copied the songs from the OP into an Excel Spreadsheet and then numbered 25 cells.  I copied and pasted the obvious stuff in first and then got out the vinyl to decide what filled the holes until I got to 25 total.  The spreadsheet provided a very nice visual when I got down to the final few.  My living room floor looked like my 1983 bedroom with albums and covers all over.  Huge fun and SO glad I found this thread.

I probably didn’t spend enough time on my ranking but my ranking would change daily anyway.  I just went through the albums and started a rough ranking on an excel sheet.  I ended up with 30 some songs eventually and spent a couple of days cutting songs and ranking until I could live with my 25.   I don’t want to look at that list again because I know I would want to make changes.

Beyond my top 25 I have 3 buckets.  The songs are relatively ranked.  I'll probably do an official ranking once we're through with this thread and I'm high on an weekend night.

Lol, I was making a joke based on your stock picks. Not a solid stock but a mad money type, like QS. 

I had never heard of Porcupine Tree and comparing to your other three bands, that was my first thought.

As much as I don't care to listen to the studio version of Kashmir I think it would have been an incredible journey to experience live.

 
I think I am finding the logic behind the revised lists more interesting / fascinating than the rankings themselves. Several people have reached out to change their #25 song and nothing else. Others forgot a song and took out a song on their list (say at 15) and added the new entry at 25 and all the other songs got bumped up one spot. A couple of people axed a song in their Top 10 and added in a new entry at that same spot (meaning it would go from unranked to say 7). A couple of people have sent in completely different lists. Some people have made multiple changes over time. I think I even had someone drop their #1 song almost 20 spots. You crazy kids . . .

Looks like there are 5 songs still in the running for top song. I'm guessing 9 of the Top 10 are pretty much set. But 7 songs are still in the mix for the #10 slot.

Shocked at how things have gone lately. A couple of high ranking and notable songs have gone ice cold . . . getting left off of 7 and 9 lists respectively (ie, on CONSECUTIVE lists submitted). Caused their overall rankings to tank.

Don't want to give too much away, but it appears Hots On For Nowhere will not end up as the #1 song. I know many of you will be crushed by that development.

Just heard Kashmir on radio yesterday.  I have it at bottom of my top 25.  It’s not one of my favorite 25 zep songs, but it is a fine piece of music and included it for the fact it is highly regarded by the band, specifically Plant.

I do wonder if a 20 year old Plant was able to listen to the entire Zeppelin catalog, would he rank Kashmir at the top? I think “I’m in the mood” Plant likes Kashmir more than the “squeeze my lemon” Plant.

One thing I will be discussing once we get to the actual individual songs is how RP has transformed many of them as a solo artist over the years. Given that he's performed Kashmir exactly one time on his own without JP, it further makes your theoretical question even more pertinent. One would think if he loved it so much, then he would play it all the time. Hasn't been the case though.

Dude couldn't hit those high notes in 92, he ain't hitting them now.  That's probably all it is.

This has come up in other threads and IMO is a bit overblown. Sure, many singers can't hit the notes that they used to. But most of them just change the key and/or sing in a lower octave as they get older.

LZ mostly abandoned some of their songs right from jump street and didn't perform them live. Not sure why. Maybe they were too hard to play, too hard to sing, or didn't sound right to them. In some cases, maybe they didn't love the songs. Who knows? Will be interesting to review what songs got tossed overboard (for the most part) across their time together.

i agree.  i'm sure that it's part of it but i think that he is just an artist at heart and cares about what he cares about at the time.  that was my main takeaway when he was on stern several years ago.  he loved the songs at the time that he did them, but now he is just in a different place creatively and mentally/spiritually and they are just not important to him.  it's hard for many to understand because of the way music tends to impact us when we are young and stay with us, but if you think about it from the perspective of the kind of things that you actually did when you were young and how many of them are really still that important to you, it makes sense to me
