Ravens QB Smith Honing In On Starting Gig

Don Banks, Sports Illustrated - [Full Article]

Second-year Baltimore Ravens QB Troy Smith has made such huge strides this spring that he has passed up Kyle Boller as the odds-on favorite to be the Ravens opening-day starter. Smith has excited Ravens brass with his rapid development after starting the final two games of 2007, and it's understood that there will be no competition between him and Boller in camp. OC Cam Cameron has Smith moving around and throwing on the run, in part to better utilize his athleticism and minimize the problems the 6-foot Smith has in finding clear throwing lanes. Rookie QB Joe Flacco seems to be Smith's only competition for the Week 1 starting job.

Cameron had some success with another short quarterback (Brees) and moving him around to get throwing lanes too

Brees has NFL-caliber arm strength and accuracy. I like rooting for the underdog, but Smith has a long, LONG way to go to even be a below average NFL starter.

Arm strength was more of an issue with Brees than it ever was or will be with Troy Smith. Brees could not hit a deep out early in his career and once documented the rigorous core strength program he endured to be able to make that throw. Smith made that throw easily as a Buckeye. Accuracy and reading defenses will be the keys for Smith.

Is this a Post-Draft development? If not, why draft Flacco?
The answer to the first part of your question is yes, this is post draft info. The answer to the second part of your query is simply 'because they have seen what Boller brings to the table and it consists largely of meh with a side order of :goodposting: '.Smith hasn't been around that long, so they were probably thinking about shoring the position up either way. I like Smith but there is no guarantee he will succeed so they drafted Flacco.

I see Herron posted his link...I was very interested when Andy posted the news before and it's still something I'm keeping an eye one.

Smith has 0 chance of being the Ravens starting QB unless things go terribly bad.
Right, because 5th round QBs are never any good. You have to be a 6th rounder or a UDFA to become a Brady, Delhomme, Warner, etc. No chance for Smith.
None of those guys had the team draft a 1st round pick after them, but it's possible that Smith pulls a Derek Anderson. The 5th round seems to be a bad round for QB's. Brunell looks like the only 5th round QB to do well at all.

I think Smith has the head & the heart to be a successful QB, but his size really concerns me. If the Ravens could out Smith's brain & guts in Boller's body, they might have something.

I brought this to the attention of the forum 3 weeks ago here- http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...howtopic=399824

Somebody needs to combine these two threads. I tried telling everybody then- watch out for Troy Smith.

This is going to be a good story to follow.
I think we're fine Andy.....we cannot have one thread for every player.....
Oh, I know. It's just that both of these threads are addressing the same thing.

Good for him. Looks like another Brady Quinn/Anderson story in the making.
He better have the success out Anderson because Quinn is one bad streak away from starting in Cleveland. It takes a hall of fame QB to keep a 1st round QB on the bench. I see this more as Jake Plummer-Jay Cutler situation where Smith starts, the team plays mediocre and is replaced by Flacco. The only difference was Plummer was an established good QB while Smith is nothing. Denver went to Cutler for the arm strength. Kind of like Penningon-Clemens but Flacco has more talent and bigger arm strength. Flacco looked great in the first OTA's and when he gets on the field, I like this Troy talk will die down. He is just another good college QB from a super football school who managed the game nicely there. Managing the game in the NFL is okay but you also need the it factor and I dont see six foot QB's having it. And I know the Brees talk will come up but he was a prolific passer in the Big Ten. Smith was not. And I also dont believe Brees is good enough to lead the Saints anywhere in the end. Same reason that SD went with Rivers

He won't because he won't have the line that Clev does, a WR like Edwards, although they do a comparable TE when he's healthy.

A good post but I disagree with your assessment of Brees. I think he is a much better QB than Rivers(Rivers is still one degree above moron). I think that Flacco is eventually the starter. It wouldn't surprise me if he sits for a couple of years with Smith doing well enough to be traded to a team in need of a starting QB. He was a very talented and cerebral college QB with a minor degree in Michael Vick athleticism, but a much more accurate arm and the ability to see the field.

Not sure what you dont like about Rivers. He is a winner and leads the team to victories and that is what the NFL is about. Not passing numbers. Yes Brees put up some nice years only after Rivers was drafted. The year before was 11 and 15. Lovely.

But he was 9-7 in 2005, Great in 2204 at 12-4(not like Rivers 14-2), and the year before Rivers was 4-12.

I see Troy having about a 55% chance to start the season but I think by the end of the season it will be Flacco time because I dont think Troy is as good as Brees and look for Baltimore to not be a playoff team. I put this more like Denver but again a less talented QB for Flacco to take over than Cutler had. Smith will not even be worth picking up for one week. I think Brodie Croyle who is unrosterable either but might start the entrie year because it is Tyler Thigpen and not Joe Flacco.
