Ray Rice, buy low? (1 Viewer)

For some I think his value has gone down with a poor showing in a week where everyone thought he would go off. Thoughts of a one year wonder may start to creep into some owners thoughts.

I bet we see some trades this week that have Rice's value down from where it was during last weeks discussion.

Short and sweet: Rice uncertain for Sunday

By Jen Royle, September 28, 2010 11:02 AM | 1 Comment

Well, the good news is that the MRI on Ray Rice's knee (left or right, still unknown, Ravens would not disclose) showed no ligament damage, but John Harbaugh did say in his Monday press conference that the running back is not a lock to play on Sunday when the Ravens face the undefeated Steelers on the road.

"I'm sure it's a significant contusion, so we'll just have to see how he fares throughout the week," Harbaugh said. "We'll just see how it goes. You've got to see how it heals by the close of the week."

There is also two other bits of good news in regards to the running back situation for Sunday: Willis McGahee and Le'Ron McClain. Luckily for Cam Cameron and the Ravens, they do have depth in the running game, not to mention two viable options in both McClain and McGahee. Coach Harbaugh also said Special Teams player Jalen Parmele can carry the ball as well.

"That's one thing we are in good shape pretty much across the board with most of our team. But running back... Willis [McGahee] has obviously proven himself again. Le'Ron [McClain] is going to be able to run the ball. Jalen Parmele is a guy you all haven't seen too much, but if he gets a chance to run the ball, he can do it, too. So, we like our running back situation."

With the Steelers tough secondary that includes Troy Polamalu, what is your level of concern if Rice is not suited up?

I'll leave you with this quote from Harbaugh:

"There's no weak link in that defense."

:lmao: Thanks for sharing.

As a Rice owner, I hope that they rest him for a week. For one reason, it allows him to get healthy. The other is that it doesn't force me to make the decision about whether to start him or not against the tough Steelers defense (because I'm positive I would end up making the wrong decision, either way).

:lmao: Same here. It sounds like Ravens are inclined to sit him against the Steelers and I can't say that bums me out as a Rice owner. If he's gotta miss time, this is as good as it gets.

Just my gut feeling here (I do own him but can cover if hes out), but I think the opposite will happen. Bet he sits out Wed practice, partial Thursday, and is cleared to roll by Friday. This is a divisional game. No love lost between these 2 teams and I bet Rice plays.

I don't want to buy him at all. I knew with Boldin coming over that his receptions were going to drop in a huge manner. Then... they got Housh too, and Mason is still there. You don't need to throw it to your RB a lot when you have 3 great possession receivers. I am not that huge on him soley as a running back... especially considering that McGahee gets the goal line TD's. I really don't see why everyone thought Rice was such a grab this year. I stayed away from him in all of my leagues.

Rice starts to bounce back after this week vs the Steelers.

I agree. I think Rice plays. Baltimore already has a divisional loss, and they have to beat the Steelers while Roethlisberger is still out. This game is much more important to Baltimore than it is to Pittsburgh. I also think that, despite the tough Steeler defense, Rice may have a good game. He's not going to get a lot of yardage on the ground. But look for Baltimore to find ways to get the ball to him in the flat or on screen passes- that's one way to effectively counter the 3-4 which can be overagressive at times. I was surprised that Tennessee didn't try to get Chris Johnson the ball more in space.

Traded Best and Mike Williams (TB) for Rice and Moeaki
Thats a great trade for him
I disagree.I too just traded Best for Rice (with some bench players as well, but that's not important.) Turf toe can be a lingering injury, and while I absolutely love Best as a player, I don't see him finishing ahead of Rice this year despite the large head start. Best still has to make it through 13 more games, which I'm not sure he can do. I think people are jumping the gun a little bit on Rice, considering he has more points right now than he did at this time last year.

This isn't happening. At least not yet. He's actually getting MORE touches in the running game and his targets and catches are almost exactly what they were through the 1st 3 games last year. He just isn't quite getting the results people are expecting.

I think now is the time to BUY Ray Rice...this is the toughest game on their schedule, after this weekend,it is all downhill against very bad rush defenses..

Denver, NE, Buff, Miami, Atl, Car, TB, Steelers, weeks 14-16 -> Hou, N.O., Cle

aside from the Steelers and maybe the Dolphins, not one of these defenses would worry me if I'm a Rice owner..

his playoff schedule is a fantasy gold mine..

:lmao: Totally agree with this. I traded for Rice in both of my two dynasty leagues.

I third that. I'd rather see him get to 100% rather than risk further injury against a team that he is unlikely to do much against anyway. Steelers are just killer on D this year.

other owner in my league has Ray Rice and Marques Colston. Trying to package Jaamal Charles with Hakeem Nicks and see if he bites. Probably won't, but he's gotta be frustrated with both Rice and Colston right now.

 The playoff schedule alone is tempting me to overpay in a trade for Mcgahee. I own Rice but not Willis.

I could follow this line of thought if Rice was being backed up by Kenneth Darby. But McGahee is no slouch. 80%-90% Ray Rice is better than many RB's out there. But McGahee isn't one of them. (I have no clue whether Rice is 80-90 percent. Just pulling those numbers out of thin air given the report of "significant" knee contusion). Wouldn't be the first time I'm wrong though!

Rice is an excellent target for a trade right now. Problem is, all my leagues are local and most if not all follow the Ravens closely. Much of the offensive woes for the Ravens are based upon the play of the offensive line. That in combination with the fact that opposing teams have keyed on minimizing the gains on Flacco's dump offs to Rice. Marvin Lewis said in his post game press conference that the Bengals spied Rice on pass plays and basically forced Flacco to read/throw the ball down field. Now back to the Oline...starting RT Jared Gaither has not played this year forcing the Ravens to move G Marshall Yanda to that RT position. They have Chris Chester starting next to him at the RG position. Chester is viewed as a bit soft and not aggressive enough to dominate at the guard spot on an every down basis. While Yanda is an excellent RG he does not have the physical tools to be an everyday RT in the NFL. Compounding the absence of Gaither, back-up tackle Oneil Cousins hasn't seen the field since suffering a concussion at the close of training camp. The ravamped line has not blocked well in either the passing or running phases of the game. This has contributed to both Flacco and Rice's subpar performances. On the bright side, Gaither practiced today for the first time in 8 weeks, albeit in a very limited, non-contact capacity. Gaither will not see action against the Steelers but is at least back on the field. Gaither practices

Many in the Ravens organization have questioned Gaither's desire to play the game. He has all the tools but, the consensus is that he doesn't have the heart. Former Ravens Olineman Orlando "Zeus" Brown was recently brought in to speak to Gaither about this very subject. Brown, always known as borderline psychotic in his desire to play/dominate the game, had to be physically restrained by several Ravens at the conclusion of the interaction between the two men. Another former lineman, Wally Williams, has openly questioned Gaither's heart in the local media. Gaither is in a contract year, was the target of much off season trade speculation and was moved from LT to RT in favor of Michael Oher in the off season. In response to this Gaither came into camp 40 lbs lighter than the year before at only 310 lbs. The speculation is that Gaither and his agent conspired to have Gaither enter camp as a more athletic LT prospect. The team was surprised and not particularly happy as they wanted Gaither to play as more of a mauler at RT. Many have suggested that the weight loss played a roll in the "injury" that has kept Gaither out since midway through camp. Members of the media have speculated that Gaither isn't really injured but, is instead a headcase that is feining injury because of the move to RT. The Ravens have made it clear that Oher is the future left tackle and will not allocate the financial resources to resign Gaither to a high dollar LT type contract.

It is a positive sign that Gaither is at least back practicing, if he can get back onto the field the entire offense including Rice and Flacco will be in a better position to succeed. He is a gifted athlete and plays at an elite level when he is on the field. Keep an eye on this situation if you are a Rice owner or targetting Rice.

Great insight. Big :) Posts like this make the SP great. In my redraft nonPPR I just gave MJD/Demaryus Thomas for Ray Rice/Aaron Hernandez. MJD's situation seems like a wasteland while Rice's arrow appears to be pointing upwards after this weekend....

12 team redraft non ppr league I'm offering Calvin Johnson, Steve Smith CAR, and Portis for him. Is this a fair offer or am I offering too much, not enough? Fantasy foosball is so hard to judge sometimes.

quick update: Rice owner rejected my Nicks/Charles for Rice/Colston trade (as I expected)

then I log on an hour ago and see "TRADE PENDING APPROVAL", and what do you know, the Rice owner just traded RAY RICE for Matt Forte and Dexter McCluster

I had a very good LOL at that trade, and I was kinda pissed to be honest...

I'm offering a Rice owner Benson ($16) and Nicks ($14) for Rice ($22) in my dynasty auction league. (ETA: values for Benson and Rice are carryovers from last season, as both were kept.)

Rice went for Forte in my 12 team redraft.

I've been offered Rice for Collie straight up...

I have ADP, Turner and Best already and Collie could be my most productive WR so I'm a bit hesitant but I feel like I shouldn't be. Carry on.

As a Rice owner I was just offered Andre Johnson and A. Bradshaw for Rice and M. Clayton and I took it. We are not a huge yardage league, 3 pts for 100.

i got a text from the Rice owner in my $ league ..... wanted to know if i had interest in Rice & Cassel (poop) for J.Charles (he owned him last year) & B.Jackson ....(his RB's of note are Greene, Rice, & Harrison- mine Charles, Best, P.Thomas)..... he's out of town & told me he'd call me tomarrow about it .......

Thinking about offering Hillis and Ocho for Rice and change.
That should fly. I was offered Rice for Addai & Ocho and took it. (Was a counter offer to a much bigger deal I made for ADP.)
Got rejected. I do have Addai too....hmm.
Yeah, probably had more to do with perceived value of Hillis as WW Wonder than anything else. No one wants to take the ego hit in Week 4 of trading their top pick for a WW RB and a borderline WR1/2. I'll bet he does it for Addai.

I just traded Brandon Marshall for Rice. I have a history of trading away a star that is about to explode. I think I got a good deal what do you think?

Some not so good news on the Gaither return. The article offers some insight into the organization's view that Gaither just doesn't have the heart/desire to play. I can't get the link to work so I copied the article from baltimoreravens.com, I hope the I am following the rules by posting the article here and citing the original source...

Gaither To Be Re-Evaluated

Posted by Ryan Mink on Friday, October 1st, 2010 at 2:55 pm | Categories: Ryan Mink

Font Size: Ravens tackle Jared Gaither’s injured back will be re-evaluated after he suffered a setback in practice Thursday.

That means Gaither, who practiced on a limited basis for the first time in eight weeks Thursday, is becoming a possible candidate for Injured Reserve.

“Obviously, the clock is ticking on something like that,” Harbaugh said, adding that’s the case with any lingering injury.

Gaither’s slight tear in his thoracic disk, which he suffered on Aug. 5, was originally diagnosed as a four-to-six week injury by Dr. Robert Watkins, the doctor Gaither and his agent Drew Rosenhaus chose for a second opinion.

Now Gaither is two weeks beyond the worst-case-scenario.

His injury has been a mystery a little bit,” Harbaugh said. “Our doctors have looked at it, and they don’t see it in there right now. So we’ve got to find out from the best experts what’s causing that problem.”

Gaither will head back out to California to see Dr. Watkins on Monday.

Harbaugh reported that Gaither was starting to feel better about a week-and-a-half ago. Gaither felt like he was going to be ready to play this week.

So he went out there and went through a very light practice,” Harbaugh said. “The next day, he came in and his back was sore.”

I just offered Fitz and Big Ben for Rice. And I'm willing to sweeten the offer if I have to. I think Rice has some big days ahead of him. Plus I'd get to pair him with Chris Johnson.

I just traded Moreno-Portis-Fitzgerald-Manningham for Rice-Austin.

I already have RBs Chris Johnson-Jamaal Charles-Peyton Hillis- Blount-Torain and WRs Reggie Wayne-Hakeem Nicks-Mark Clayton- Mike Williams (SEA)

I am sitting at 3-0. He is sitting at 1-2. He has no depth at RB (we start 3 RB), and not too solid after Austin at WR either(Has Boldin, but we also start 3 WR). So, I think it worked for both of us.

Well... that's the goal. However, if Fitzgerald picks it up (I believe he will)... Manningham stays consistent... Moreno comes back... and Portis stays healthy.... it should work out for him as well. He honestly didn't even have 2 starting running backs and we have to start 3 every week. I think it just all happened at the right time for this trade. Rice was underperforming and hurt... and Austin had one down game and is on a bye week. He probably just couldn't deal with starting 1-3... so he had to get some sort of line-up going this week. Funny thing is... he plays against me this week. lol

Rice trade just went down in our money league: Rice / Jennings / Heap for Addai / Maclin / Clark (I think the Rice owner sold too low)

Just got Rice for LeSean McCoy and Donovan McNabb.

I initially offered Cutler instead, but we settled on McNabb.

I feel good about it.

Run defenses Rice faces the rest of the way:

4 - Steelers (3rd)

5 - Broncos (10th)

6 - Patriots (20th)

7 - Bills (27th)

8 - Bye

9 - Dolphins (19th)

10 - Falcons (12th)

11 - Panthers (14th)

12 - Buccaneers (28th)

13 - Steelers (3rd)

14 - Texans (2nd)

15 - Saints (30th)

16 - Browns (21st)

17 - Bengals (13th)

He's a definite buy low, and I think if you're going to pull the trigger, you want to do it before next week. More than likely he'll have a mediocre to bad game against the Steelers this week (although last year he did run well against them, but still their defense is looking amazing, and the injury probably means he'll get 15-20 carries instead of 20-30).

After that, though, it's pretty clear sailing until he catches the Steelers again in Week 13. I'm also not sold on the Texans run defense ending the year that good. Indianapolis abandoned the run in Week 1, the Redskins with Portis as the feature back were a terrible rushing team, and the Cowboys backs are equally as bad right now.

I'm sure they're decent, but not Top 10 by year's end.

Saints and Browns in the playoffs could mean a monster finish for Rice. I'd get him barring an injury. Now's the time.
