Ray Rice just re-instated. He won his appeal. (1 Viewer)

Not this year! See AP thread. This guy actually had a stronger case than AP by receiving double punishment for same crime. NFL PR trumps all.
The difference in Rice's case and AP's is that Rice had an independent arbiter and a federal judge at that to hear it.

If Peterson got the same opportunity I think we would see the same result. It will never happen of course.
Good point, but will a team sign him this year? Essentially both players are gone for 2014.
Rice? No way. It's fun to talk about what-if, I guess. The no. 1 candidate would be the Steelers, the Ravens' rival. But no it will not happen anywhere,

You guys are funny. It's not like his job is being a priest or something. Most of these football players would be criminals if it weren't for football. Let's not kid ourselves, these guys aren't known for their moral compass. Rice will get picked up whether you like it or not.

What does it mean? ...
It means two things:

  1. If a player gets a truly independent appeal with a truly independent arbiter, here a federal judge, then he has a real shot at a fair hearing.
  2. Roger Goodell is a flat out liar. Here he was made to testify and he was found uncredible.
Happy to hear of this ruling. And if AP ever had a shot at achieving No. 1 he would probably have a shot at showing No. 2 in his own case.

There's probably a 95%+ chance he plays in the NFL again, whether he does anything is another question, but it's almost a sure thing he gets another chance. It isn't like he's in his 30's.

If I were his PR rep, I'd advise him to come out and make an unequivocal statement that he won't play this year as he seeks to rebuild his life. It would get him some good press for demonstrating that he understands the gravity of what he did, and it's basically a freebie since no one's going to sign him anyway.

"Because, after careful consideration of all of the evidence, I am not persuaded that Rice lied to, or misled, the NFL at his June interview, I find that the indefinite suspension was an abuse of discretion and must be vacated."

"The sole issue in this matter is whether what Rice told the Commissioner and other league representatives about the assault at their June 16, 2014, meeting was 'a starkly different sequence of events' than what was captured on the 'inside-the-elevator' video. It was not."

Rice has enough wear and tear on him that he might as well be 30+. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if he's completely done.
Rice has 1806 touches in his first 6 seasons. Other players with similar amounts of wear-and-tear through their first 6 seasons:

Warrick Dunn (1791 touches): 672 rushing yards in Year 7 (11 games), 1106 yards in Year 8

Fred Taylor (1862 touches): 1224 rushing yards in Year 7, 787 in Year 8 (11 games)

Matt Forte (1892 touches): on pace for 1104 rushing yards in Year 7

Ricky Watters (1929 touches): 1239 rushing yards in Year 7, 1210 in Year 8

Frank Gore (1940 touches): 1211 rushing yards in Year 7, 1214 yards in Year 8

Maurice Jones-Drew (1956 touches): 414 rushing yards in Year 7 (6 games), 803 yards in Year 8 (15 games)

I play in two leagues, and Rice got picked up in both of them. Seriously? He hasn't signed with a team yet, there's nothing to indicate he's about to, and even if he does, the likelihood of him achieving anything close to fantasy relevance is infinitesimal. One guy dropped Dwyane Alien for him!

Game over, man.

Every media outlet would tell us that is why he is doing it though. But yeah, that is what he SHOULD do, then sign a week later when someone offers him a contract.

If he can help a team, they will sign him.

Its called Rice being punished 2 times for the same act.... AP and RICE are WAY WAY WAY WAY different in that manner.

What they have in common is Goodell making up punishment on the spot, outside the CBA, and lying throughout. The only thing different is Rice got a truly independent hearing. Peterson won't ever get that most likely.

Same in my league. Literally seconds after the news broke someone in my league picked him up. Dropped Knile Davis for him too. No way any team picks him up unless they want the PR nightmare.

I'm not totally sold that Rice's skills have diminished to a point where he couldn't be fantasy-relevant in the right situation. It seems very unlikely that any NFL team would sign him this year. But if they do, he could do something.

No team has signed Richie Incognito.
bingo and OL are far more important to NFL teams than RBs.
Not a good comparison. Incognito was a bad teammate and a locker room cancer. From anything Rice's teammates ever say is that he was a great teammate. He had overwhelming support from his team. He will get signed. Too many teams in need of RB help and if domestic violence precluded teams from signing players, the NFL would look a whole lot different today.

Incognito's skills are more in need now by NFL teams than are Rice's. And what Incognito did wasn't as bad in the opinion of the public (fans and future fans) than what Rice did. Finally, Rice had big locker room support until the video came out. There's no way the Ravens players would want him back now with all the media circus and criticism it would subject them to.

Incognito = hated around the league by opponents and destroyed a locker room in one fowl swoop.

Rice = hated by public but prior to assault loved by organization brass and known as a good locker room presence.

I am actually of the belief that the public perception matters very little in whether he'll be signed or not. By who, yes but his skills will determine if he gets another job. Destroying a locker room is huge though. Incognito cost the team and the coaching staff. He caused them embarrassment, money, gamesand players. It may not be perceived by the public as worse but in football terms it sure is probably harder to forget.
