CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports suspended RB Ray Rice could be reinstated by mid-November.

"An appeal hearing date has been set, with a final decision expected to come in an expeditious manner thereafter, and all of that could be resolved by mid-November," writes La Canfora. Rice maintains he didn't lie in his initial hearing with Roger Goodell, arguing he should only be suspended a maximum of six games as a first-time offender. Many believe Rice has an "exceedingly strong" case, and he could be available to sign with a team within four weeks. La Canfora wonders if the Colts and Patriots may be interested clubs.

Rice has maintained he did not lie in his testimony to Commissioner Roger Goodell, and his legal team will make the case that even under the NFL's new domestic violence policy, and as a first-time offender, Rice should be suspended a maximum of six games, which has already passed. Furthermore, they will make the argument that the video tape of Rice's actions were available to the team and the league throughout the process of determining his discipline, and thus nothing changed whatsoever with the case from the time Rice was suspended two games, until eventually being suspended indefinitely, save for TMZ obtaining and posting the video.

Numerous legal experts I've spoken to believe Rice has an exceedingly strong case, and, considering it could be Week 10 or so before this hearing is resolved, it's hard for them to conceive that Rice isn't reinstated by Jones as part of her decision.
I agree with a lot of this sounds believeable and correct.

Goodell really sets himself up for this kind of thing by being prosecutor, investigator, judge, jury, executioner, not to mention being the commish of the league affected.

Is Rice worth a flyer end of bench add based on this? Questions are: does the news stay on the down-low and then what team would he go to? And finally, right, which team would want to handle the PR?

I would add that he was extremely valuable in the Kubiak offense, but wherever he would land it may not be all that.

No team will touch Rice. It would be a PR nightmare.
Um...two teams have signed Vick since his incident, and another team (49ers) is currently employing a spousal abuser. Heck, teams have even signed murderers.

The Rice shock has worn off. We are all over it, he paid his punishment. Time to move on for everyone.

As with everything else that goes in our world people ease off their righteous judgments, have a tendency to forgive, and folks are are given second and third chances...just like we all get. Reminds me of casting the first stone. Time heals...and so do our hearts. Rice deserves to play again...it's his livlihood. I am certainly not here to condone his behavior.

michael vick was locked away for years and there was video for rice when there isnt for any other player for spousal abuse. Apples to oranges brother

Have always thought he'd get the additional punishment overturned.

As for whether another team will pick him up...

By mid-November he'll have lost many millions of dollars and suffered permanent (and appropriate) reputational damage.

Hard to argue he hasn't done his time IMO. Especially after a legal hearing says the same thing.

After you get through the reinstatement issue and then the "will anyone sign him and who?" issue, you need to consider what Rice the player is now.

Doubt the sideshow and distraction he would bring would be worth it to a contending team. He'd have to be really special as a RB to make it worthwhile and he certainly hasnt looked like that recently. Plenty of guys that can do what he does without the distraction

Not sure it's apples to oranges really.

If this was Aaron Rodgers who beat his wife, you don't think a team would sign him?

I'm not sure Rice is really that good of a player any more to make it worth it. But it's possible someone signs him.

Right. Vick was convicted and incarcerated while rice married his victim.

He's probably better than most teams #4 back. I wouldn't sign him but someone likely will.

Good players don't just stop being good at 27 years old. Doesn't happen barring drugs, major injuries, etc.

The problem for him is that he's more likely to go to a terrible situation than a good one.

Agreed, in that details in each case are unique. But, this "integrity of the league" crap is as much for our feel good benefit as it is player conduct issues. If Rice is reinstated and signed by a team, that team's fans will immediately display The Dennis Rodman Syndrome, in that Rice will go from being a doosh to "our guy."

I think 2015 sounds about right for his return. You figure a few more idiots will get into the trouble, and after the AP thing that should put a lot of memories of Rice to bed. Does a contender sign him or a bottom dweller with nothing to lose (Jags)?

There's a difference

Rice was never a locker room distraction.... The NFL's supposed "ban" was supposed to be for 6 games not eternity and no one in the league has ever been kept out that long with Justin Blackmon being the longest suspension I've seen to date. Maybe it won't be this season (but I think there is more than a 50/50 chance it will if suspension is lifted) but some team will give him a chance.

My guess is he may have to wait for next year for someone to sign him. But no doubt he will get another chance.

You do know how RBs work right?

Pats could sign him in a minute and they have enough spokesmen and power (Kraft, Brady, BB) to make it about "giving second chances" and FU to those who disagree.

Jerry Jones as well.

A team with a "big personality" to draw fire is the best place for him to land. A place like Miami (loss of Moreno) would be terrible bc they have no ability to handle negative PR.

He clearly missed the interview with Kraft where he stated that Rice would not be signed by the Patriots when he was finally reinstated. I don't think that's going to change, regardless of the Pats RB situation.

After you get through the reinstatement issue and then the "will anyone sign him and who?" issue, you need to consider what Rice the player is now.
Rested, hungry, pissed...
or out of football shape, put on weight, he didn't see to be the greatest RB last year, don't see what has changed except he is a year older this year, and has not played a regular season NFL game this year. If someone does sign him I take the over that he gets hurt in his first three games back. Maybe some one like the Jags will sign him to see if he has anything left, but don't see NE or Indy making that move. They make the playoffs without him and the baggage that he brings.

Yes. The sex is more frequent in jail.

Meh, he was hurt last year and the o-line sucked. He's still relatively young. There are as many reasons for optimism as pessimism IMO. Of course, I'm assuming he's in a vigorous workout program to stay in top conditioning, since that's just common sense and it's what anyone in his position should be doing right now.

Tell that to Clinton Portis and Eddie George.

Not that I'm convinced Ray Rice was some great RB to begin with, and not just a product of Cam Cameron's extremely RB friendly offense.

Eddie George had three 1000-yard seasons after he turned 27 (including his best year). Clinton Portis made the Pro Bowl at age 27 and was on pace for another 1000-yard season the next year before going on IR.

Obviously we don't know. I'm simply pointing out that absence makes the (fantasy) heart grow fonder. I owned Rice when he was a perfect cross between a swiss army knife and a bowling ball but there's a fair bit of "calendar" between then and now. Sometimes we get preoccupied by the hitting, pot, DUIs, suspensions, ensuing drama and pending return and forget to temper actual expectations...

Sponsors are not giving up on Ray Rice , just heard he signed an endorsement deal with "Black & Decker"

Both should go in the Hall one day and both stopped being good because of injuries as the post you replied to said. Full disclosure, I think the number of RBs in the hall is a travesty, there should be many many more. How Herschel Walker, Jerome Bettis, Corey Dillon and Ricky Watters are not in yet is beyond me. Bettis retired almost 10 years ago and is 6th alltime in rushing yards and Herschel Walker, dont get me started. End of rant./

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell testified under oath Wednesday for two-plus hours in Ray Rice's appeal hearing in Manhattan, sources told "Outside the Lines" Don Van Natta Jr. The testimony from Goodell, the first witness called, followed opening statements by the NFL and the NFL players' union, which is handling the appeal for the former Pro Bowl running back who was suspended indefinitely by the NFL and released by the Ravens after a domestic violence incident. Goodell spent the majority of his time testifying under cross-examination by union attorney Jeffrey Kessler, sources said. The sources did not disclose what Goodell said under testimony, citing a gag order in the case. Rice and his wife, Janay, attended the hearing, which began mid-morning at the offices of former U.S. District Judge Barbara S. Jones. Jones, who will decide the appeal, ruled that all witnesses would be testifying under oath. The Rices are expected to testify separately on Thursday, the sources said. Goodell, league security chief Jeffrey Miller, and Ravens president **** Cass are among the key witnesses expected to testify in the two-day hearing. It was not known Wednesday afternoon who followed Goodell. It's unclear when Jones will rule in the case, though a source told "Outside the Lines" a decision could come in a matter of days.

I bet Rice's lawyers had a fistfight over who got to cross-examine Goodell under oath. Probably a dream come true for an NFL labor lawyer.

Could be all sorts of interesting stuff come out of this. Hopefully we'll get some good reporting after this wraps up.

Right but he's not Significantly better then any teams #1 RB... making his fantasy impact non existent.
