Yes, he is. If MJD can do it at that height I don't think Ray Rice should have any trouble. He's very strong, bounces off tackles and fast enough to outrun people. I don't doubt he's got a shot at being a 2nd rounder. If he has a 2007 as good as his 2006 I think he declares and goes out as a junior in the 2008 draft.
Be careful citing MJD for an example of a smaller back making it just fine - he's a freak of nature. That being said, Rice is smaller than ideal, but has the determination, power, change of direction and low running style (which gives him good balance) to overcome that. He's not on the level of a Slaton or McFadden, but he's worthy of being called the #3 RB in a ridiculously good soph RB class. He's not amazingly shifty or nimble, but he's efficient and mostly fluid with his change of direction, and he hits the hole full speed with great first step acceleration. He should be a first day pick, but not a first rounder.Yes, he is. Major size difference between Rice and MJD. ESPN.com lists MJD at 5-7 212ESPN.com lists Rice at 5-9 195Yes, he is. If MJD can do it at that height I don't think Ray Rice should have any trouble. Turbo Punch said:Rice's problem as an NFL prospect is not going to be his size - It's his lack of break away speed. I've seen every game he has played and he seems to get caught from behind more than he should.
On the NFL network the guys calling the game kept throwing around names of NFL players that Rice reminded them of. The one name I can remember was Curtis Martin. I'm sure Rice will take a HOF career right now, but remember Martin wasn't that great of a prospect when he entered the draft being only a 3rd round pick.
I'd go with rice at this point. Hill is a very intriguing big back with quickness, but it's hard to say how much of his success was due to the line - he did NOTHING against a good arkansas front 4.it's rice or PJ hill in our prospect league, for my pick next year...
This is what always stands out to me. It amazes me that he was recruited out of HS as a cornerback - his instincts are absolutely amazing. He is SO patient waiting for holes to develop, he knows how to keep moving forward waiting for his blockers, uses the blockers so well, knows when to go for the edge, knows when to turn it inside, etc. How many times this year did you see him try to get the corner and NOT get there? Almost never. How many times did it seem like he was going to be tripped up, only he ended up steamrolling a defender or keeping his legs moving to grind out an extra 2-3 yards and a first down? TONS.He doesn't have ideal size or speed, but he has the heart and the vision of a HOF-back. I'd draft him in a heartbeat.Rice's problem as an NFL prospect is not going to be his size - It's his lack of break away speed. I was lucky enough to have seen Curtis Martin more than a few times in college and the first time I saw Ray Rice play last year, I immediatelythought of Martin. Watching every Rutgers game this year only added to that. He's a talented kid with great vision and greater determination. There are larger and faster RB's, but Rice is special. I think he'd make a very good pro.
They return most (4 out of 5) of the O-Line, the WR's & QB should be more productive as well which will keep teams from stacking up against him.
