RB Antonio Gibson, NE (3 Viewers)

Commanders HC Ron Rivera said he would like to get Antonio Gibson more touches in 2023.

Rivera is reportedly hoping to get Gibson more touches heading into the first season with Bieniemy at the offensive helm, noting he's intrigued by the way Gibson fits into "what Eric Bieniemy wants to do with the offense." A former wide receiver who converted to running back, Gibson has the kind of versatility that Bieniemy's running backs had in Kansas City. Gibson rushed for a career-low 149-546-3 last season but saw career highs in receptions (46) and receiving yards (353). Gibson is arguably the most versatile back on Washington's roster at this time and could be a value in the middle of PPR drafts. Brian Robinson still stands to threaten for early down touches and goal line work, but any added reps in the passing game can only be a positive for Gibson's fantasy outlook this season.

Let’s see what really happens. I wondered about this in the off-season. Robinson seems like a slightly better version of Leroy Hoard.
In Robinson's defense, let's see what he looks like when he's not recovering from gunshot wounds. He looked pretty explosive for his size in college/preseason before that. I wouldn't be shocked of Robinson was a pretty solid breakout candidate.

I feel like Gibson has some skills, but whenever he starts to get going, he gets nicked up. He's like D'Andre Swift but on a worse offense.

I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Rod-Ra-Gwayze takes snaps from him.

Yeah. Rivera had plenty of opportunity to get Gibson more touches last year and didn't.
Which is why I don’t care what Rivera thinks, I care what his new OC thinks

From Robinson or Gibson?

I'm quite a bit lower on Rodriguez. I think he's maybe 50-50 to make the team.

I am curious if Gibson returns kicks this year.

I've watched CR his entire career as a UK fan and while he's not super athletic, he gains yards every time he runs the ball. He's very strong and is an excellent between the tackles guy. On the surface it looks like if he gets carries at all it will be on the early downs. I would be very surprised if he didn't make the team.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said RB Antonio Gibson "has really shown his pass-catching abilities" in OTAs.

"Especially in space, he's a load," Rivera said during a Wednesday press conference. It makes one wonder why the Commanders haven't made a more concerted effort to deploy Gibson -- a former receiver -- as a pass-catching weapon over his three seasons in Washington. Last season, Gibson had a career high 46 catches for 453 yards and two touchdowns with J.D. McKissic sideline for much of the season. He was eighth among all running backs in yards per route run. Rivera said in mid-May that the team would like to get Gibson more touches in offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy's scheme. While Brian Robinson should remain the Commanders' early-down grinder, Gibson, 24, should at least get a chance to show off his pass-catching chops in 2023.

Rivera sounds like Peggy Hill. "In my personal opinion, it appears that Antonio Gibson is a very good pass-catching back." Only thing noteworthy here is that Gibson is only 24 👀

Hmmm. you're just noticing that now Ron?

Commanders HC Ron Rivera said Antonio Gibson could be a "matchup nightmare for the opponent" in the team's new offense.

The drumbeat continues to grow louder for Gibson, who appears to be in good favor with new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Gibson is arguably the most versatile back on Washington's roster and has been utilized heavily in the screen game at OTAs and minicamp per The Athletic's Ben Standig. Rivera added, "Eric wants to make sure (Antonio) gets as many opportunities right now to show us what he's capable of because I think that'll be a big part of the game planning." Gibson's background as a receiver during his days at Memphis led many to believe he would see receiving work early in his career. While he's managed 124 receptions through his first three seasons, Gibson was always stuck in the shadow of J.D. McKissic, who is currently a free agent. As the hype around Gibson continues to grow, it's possible he turns into a high-end RB2 for fantasy if Bieniemy can deploy him in ways the previous offensive coordinator did not.

I hope every Washington player stays healthy, but if Robinson were to miss any time, starting to sound like Gibson could be a league winner the way their plan to use him in space, passing game.

Would love to see him come through finally, but kinda feels like been there done that? Definitely hope in losing McKissic, though ...

this guy is so talented I hope these opinions stick and hes that guy! but is riverboat ron really going to let bienemy be the same coach he was in kc? not sure what this means for robinson and co., wait n see approach is best I guess. but the futility that gibson offers isnt worth it imo I dont too much care about coachspeak and beat writers spiel in july or august for that matter this guy just hasnt done it to this point and theres no reason to believe he will now. now, jahan dotson? thats a much different story.

Gibson '21 was 1400 yds and 10 TDS so he kind of has done it. Usage has been his killer. Every time I watch him the talent seems so obvious. My only reason to believe this year may be different is Bieniemy sees what the rest of us see.
More importantly that he sees and can fix what Rivera didn’t like.

He just turned 25 last month and has battled injuries so far. If he can be healthy and is getting the 3rd down work, he should be going in the first 4 rounds. I got him last night in the 10th.

Antonio Gibson asked on the broadcast about his role in EB's offense: "Just being able to do what I was thought I was going to be doing. Running outside, lining up wide. Being used everywhere. I like how he uses everybody and I’m super excited to be a part of it."

Sounds just a little bit passive-aggressive. I'm excited for him (for me) but it makes me wonder if Rivera just doesn't like him (for whatever reason). Seems like Gibson has some bitterness about his role. I'd know, based on all the miles I've walked in his shoes.

I've wondered this the whole time he's been in D.C. As soon as they got down on him for certain things, you could tell something was wrong.

Seems like Gibson has some bitterness about his role.

He should. They wasted prime years of his career throwing to J.D. McKissic and other "third down" backs.

Antonio Gibson was drafted by Washington in 2020.

J.D. McKissic also joined Washington in 2020.
In 2020 he got 110 targets in 16 games.
In 2021 he got 53 targets in 11 games.
In 2022 he got 40 targets in 8 games.

Over the 3 seasons Gibson has been on this team, McKissic has totaled 203 targets in just 35 games. On average, McKissic was getting 5.8 targets per game, a pace of 99 a year.
99 targets would be the 3rd highest of all RBs in 2022.

Antonio Gibson, in 15 games last year, received 58 targets, which was the 12th highest at the RB position.

J.D. McKissic and his 5.8 targets per game... are no longer on the team.

Gibson is currently being drafted as RB34, as the 87th player off the board, the 8th round of 12 team PPR leagues.

Hoping Bieniemy splits Gibson out wide to utilize his pass catching skill more. It's been hinted at but I really want to see it... something I've been waiting for since he was drafted.

well...Mckissic missed 2nd half of season last year and Gibson averaged 2.5 receptions/ game after week 8. He did catch 7 balls in week 8, i'm guessing McKissic got hurt in that game although don't recall when in the game.

Calling my shot. Gibson will end up being the steal of the draft. Dude was being taken in the 2nd/3rd round a few years ago and didn't suffer any type of serious injury.

A pass catching role fits him better than a lead back and personally I think he is way more talented than Brian Robinson who is no more than a plodder.

Top 10 RB potential. Sounds crazy, but I can't think of a player with more upside relative to their draft position this season.

That's right & we know Gibson has expressed, even recently, his desire to "line up wide". But apart from Gibson quoted as saying that he's "really that guy", there's not a lot out there. Below is Ron Rivera quoted back in late May:

“He's really shown that his pass-catching ability is there. Once he's got the ball in his hands, especially in space, he's a load. Matching him up one-on-one with a corner or a nickel out there could be pretty good as far as being able to take the hit, bounce off and just keep running.”

That comment from Rivera wasn't in the context of Gibson as a WR. But matched against a CB or a nickel 'back (the slot corner), what else can it mean? At the very least that would seem to suggest Gibson initially lined up in the backfield & then motioned out wide, which equates to the same thing. He's also recently been quoted as saying that he's now doing the things he thought he'd be doing. I'm not as high on him as others but I definitely opt for upside in the later rounds. The part of the narrative I reject is that Rivera & Scott Turner I suppose didn't possess EB's vision, that they retarded Gibson's development. Below is a quote from an article dated two years to the day, meaning, Aug. 2021:

"Washington Football Team quarterback Kyle Allen told reporters Tuesday that running back Antonio Gibson is being pushed toward a similar role that Christian McCaffrey plays for the Carolina Panthers, per JP Finlay..."

You can even find Gibson himself saying that every year, him being utilized more as a pass-catcher is talked about, but never happens. I think they definitely considered him as an option in the passing game, obviously he was, just not as a WR & not to the extent that fantasy owners were satisfied. I'd also like to know, if Gibson was the better down & distance option, why wasn't he able to take that role from McKissic? Of concern, to me anyway, watching McKissic, nothing really stands out. Not his route-running, nor receptions in traffic, an ability to break tackles. What I did notice was that the focus defensively was elsewhere, affording space for McKissic to exploit. I did like how he would slip or sneak out into space.

Clearly, the uptempo, down/distance role has been vacated & Gibson is getting 1st crack at it. Last I checked, he's still listed as the team's primary kick returner.... We know in '21 he fumbled more than anyone not a QB & four them were lost. The timing of which couldn't have been worse, favorable field position & the game still very much in the balance. About this time last year coaches were emphasizing securing the football better & in the first preseason game he put the ball on the ground again. Rivera also noted a lack of intensity, those were the reasons Gibson lost his lead role.

To me he seems like a player who has no problem publicly saying he's dissatisfied with his role. Has been utilized in the passing game, has told us all the role he wants for himself. Says there have been discussions regarding his role as a WR & he tells us nothing has ever come from it. But what he doesn't tell us is why that hasn't happened! There's something about how he's used & volume. If I were to guess, I don't think it matters whether he blows up or fails, he'll be playing somewhere else next year.

The more I hear of what happens in practice, I think Gibson lines up as the tight end role in passing situations. If they go 5 wide, that's 3 WRs, 1 TE, and Gibson. And maybe some additional plays as a pure RB.

I would not have seen this coming a few weeks ago, but on running plays we may see a lot more of Chris Rodriguez than Gibson/Robinsons owners want to see. He's a bruiser. Robinson could lose carries to him IMO.

The Commanders are excited about Rodriguez. He will find a role on the 2023 roster, despite being behind Robinson and Gibson. Rodriguez’s style will wear down opposing defenses, some even comparing his style to Marshawn Lynch.

There's nothing coaches seem to love more than lining up RB's all over the field in practice and then have those plays never see the light of day once the season starts. I have no idea why they do this, maybe to help prepare their defenses for different formations but who knows.

Another big SEC 'back, I like him too. For those heavily investing in Gibson if part of the perceived upside is assuming the role of lead 'back should something happen to Robinson... I wouldn't be so sure.

Even more comical, this specific team has done exactly that with this specific player any number of times before. (ha-ha) But let's assume they do it this time. Left out completely is that they're also exploring Brian Robinson's versatility in the passing game (not as a WR). For a good look at him in all three phases I recommend the following search key: Brian Robinson jr vs Georgia & then his name vs Cincinnati. His last two collegiate games, very good in PP & out of the backfield. Neither he or Bryce Young did well vs Georgia, they were getting pushed around up front, but Robinson does make a few plays. Against the Bearcats, the unit performed better & so did he. A very well-rounded player.

Was watching their recent game vs the Ravens & early on I noticed that they had Gibson lined up like an H-back then motioned him across the formation & out wide. He ran a 9-route & Howell's initial read appeared to be the out route run underneath it. No other 'back was on the field. Gibson did catch passes & scored, although his TD appeared to have more to do with a coverage breakdown. At one point Aikman said that Bieniemy called some of the play in KC. What wasn't said was who was formulating the game plan each week. In Washington however, EB has full control.

If I'm overstating it, then, anyone, come at me bro! :) We have an experiment at OC, we have a partial(?) experiment at WR. We have a very inexperienced QB...but this all clearly translates to, what is it again? Mark, you silly boy, might I remind you that this is "professional" football, up is down bud! Ah, of course. :) Wrong no doubt, but as a Robinson owner if we were to learn that maybe 40% of Gibson's reps were at WR & largely had nothing to do with whether Robinson was on the field as well, I'd be lovin' that. :)

i love him. cat's outta the bag i think but not being reflected in drafts. still super cheap in PPRs. time to maybe bump up a round or two as prime draft time kicks in after this weekend

Just got Gibson as my RB4 in a Keep-5 league draft (pretty much a redraft). Zach Charbonnet and Roschon Johnson went before Gibson.

I've got pretty high expectations, not gonna lie.

I think you can look at this team, and project Kamara-type workload pretty easily. Just so many things I like that add up for him. We should assume the offense will be better, Dotson certainly looks like a guy coming into his own. And if it is the case where they actually do have two really good WR, and Bienemy calling the plays, and a good defense, and you KNOW the culture is in a great place right now because Snyder is gone. I would be completely shocked if the locker room is not a great place right now.

Add all that up, and the new QB doesn't need to be a phenom for WAS to be in games.

Look every year teams go from really bad to good. Every year. These guys are a fine choice this year.
