I don't like the sound of this, or anything that has come out of their camp this year. I don't think Childress is the answer to all of the woes up north. The need some saavy vets to come in, not like BJ, some real vets, and take some leadership

Hmmm....Taylor is over-valued by too many people who believe a big fat contract from Minny makes him a #2 RB in FF.
- The guy has 4 career rushing TDs and 2 games rushing over 100 yards in 4 seasons. Yes I realize he was the back-up RB in BAL. That is partly my point, the guy is an unproven player.
- This is the 2nd report that the Vikings are not happy with his conditioning/work ethic.
- ravnzfan posted information at the end of last season that the Ravens were not happy with Chester's attitude and would not try to re-sign him. Sounds like the new reports out of MIN add credibility to ravnzfan.

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings RB Chester Taylor walked away from a five-year contract offer from the Baltimore Ravens for a fresh start with the Vikings. "I mean, I enjoyed being with the Ravens," Taylor said. "I'm glad they gave me the opportunity. But I felt like I wanted a fresh start, so Minnesota is a great place for me right now."
for every out of shape RB that becomes a star there are probably 100 that don't... i wouldn't want to pin my hopes on taylor being able to be fat & successful because bettis was... bettis was a lot bigger & stronger & because his game was more predicated on power & his style fit PIT smashmouth run game like a glove, he could get away with being a little chunky & rotund... i don't believe taylor is that kind of RB...Jerome Bettis was out of shape his whole career, and he is going to be a Hall of Famer

I think it is amazing how excited we get over news like this in June. We are so starved for fantasy football news that we blow up news like this... I still would not read anything into this.
I mean its not like he came into trainning camp over weight...if he does then the red flag comes up slightly.
I think you can chalk this up to Childress looking for a ways to motivate someone who got a nice hefty contract. You "leak" a few "rumblings" and the running back comes in a little more motivated for camp then he would be had this not surfaced.
I honestly believe this is a back door motivational factor for the Vikings staff.... and we are still reading way too much into this.
Every year we hear of players out of shape, and by game 1 suffer no ill effects. While we have players who claim to be in their best shape of their lives, flopping or sufering injuries.
But hey I have no problem with it setting off more red flags, the more flags it sets off in people's head... the more likely I can get Chester for better value....![]()
What's even more interesting is the Google-cached version of the real article has no mention of the him walking away from a five year offer from BAL. You are not going to see that. If you followed the Daunte situation at all you should be concerned. Once the "Vikings Organization" starts purposely leaking negative information about a player it should send up red flags. I really do not like the way the new management/coaching staff seems to handle this stuff. When I read the coaching staff "quoted" then I'll possibly be concerned ... till then this is nothing but reporter speculation! ...![]()
So you mean it was a bad idea to trade Taylor for Michael Clayton based on June FF news? DOH.(KFFL) Kevin Seifert, writing for the Sporting News, reports Minnesota Vikings RB Chester Taylor's absence from the early part of offseason workouts caused some consternation at the Vikings' headquarters. He reported for the team's initial minicamp out of shape. That was not a good start for a player expected to get the majority of carries as well as play a key role in the passing game of head coach Brad Childress' west-coast offense. However, Taylor remained in town for the remainder of the team's minicamps and offseason training workouts, and there appear to be no depth chart concerns as training camp approaches.
Again, doesn't it depend on where he's taken and the league scoring system? He's going in the mid third in 12 team, 1ppr leagues. It's difficult to see him underperforming that slot.Taylor will disappoint in 2006![]()
This seems like a much more positive report for Taylor. If this information is coming from the same place that the 'out of shape' comments came from, it would appear that Taylor stuck around and worked out with the team after he reported out of shape. So he showed up out of shape, heard about it, then has worked with the team since then? I guess we'll have to wait until camp opens to really see what this all means, if it means anythying at all.(KFFL) Kevin Seifert, writing for the Sporting News, reports Minnesota Vikings RB Chester Taylor's absence from the early part of offseason workouts caused some consternation at the Vikings' headquarters. I like Chester Taylors prospects a great deal in 2006 if he can accumulate 300+ combined touches he should be a solid RB2 with a chance to border on being a weak RB1. However there are still many questions and uncertainty surrounding him which makes me wonder if he will have a year similar to Lamont Jordan in 2005 or a career that goes more the path of Marcell Shipp...The main positives for Chester Taylors success are the Oline + FB + TE and situation of old QB that will cause a run focused offense. I think everything around Chester has set him up for success. I do not think he has to be a great Rb to take advantage of this situation. He only has to be average to slightly above average and healthy to have a very productive season.I think he will. But these negative rumours do concern me.a couple of things:Chester Taylor does not have a history of being injured...he did earn a week off last year due to "attitude" (and not posting for practice until Friday of a game week)...it wasn't widely reported, but Taylor was very upset w/the Ravens last season...consider:--as a RFA, CLEV offered a $3M/1yr deal to come as their starter, which the Ravens matched, denying the opportunity to prove he could start over a whole season--Jamal Lewis spent time in the pokey, then a half way house all summer...he reported to camp in early August, then needed another week "to get into football shape"...who do you think took EVERY 1st team RB carry in mini-passing and every other camp, until ~August 10th?--with Lewis struggling over his own contract issues, Taylor felt under used...he had slightly better numbers than Lewis, when given the opportunity, which in his mind was not enough...this led him to believe the Ravens were intentionally keeping his value "down", as Free Agency approached--Taylor turned down more money here than Minny offered...the assumption is Childress fancies Taylor as a Westy-type, which ain't half bad, and promised the opportunity Taylor has been looking for--the "tag" number for RB's this year was ~$6.7M, which is the avg of the 5 highest paid at the position...this would refer to their "cap number", as opposed to "base salary", which are 2 entirely different numbers...draw your own conclusions as to where $14M/4yrs falls(on the bottom end), but understand Taylor gave up some $$$ for the "opportunity" to play w/Childress in a system that will have him see ~300-325 touchespersonally, I think the days of the 350+ carry back are comming to an end, as teams continue to utilize 2 and 3 backs in different packages, trying to keep bodies healthy---while there will obviously "be others" in Minny getting some work, IMHO, Taylor sees Westy-type touches indoors, on a fast track...a combination I think will provide for some very nice numbers from Mr TaylorThis post has been edited by ravnzfan: Apr 10 2006, 11:27 AM
