RB David Johnson, Retired (1 Viewer)

I picked rbs late in one league. In it I got one good one Drake. Then followed up with Fournette, DJohnson, LBell, MIngram, and Mattison. My plan is to manage the matchups to get a collective monster And flex from these 4 and a lottery. 🤣
Did you take RB's with your first 5 picks?  What rounds were you taking these guys?  How many teams in the league?

It drafted like dynasty. I have the oldest squad in the league. But I wanted to compete now and will figure out the keepers as I go. Aside from Drake most people don’t care for the rest of the backs on my squad so I took them.

Assuming that is David Johnson in the 8th round (since this is the David Johnson thread) I think that is a solid pick. Between Drake and Johnson you should be ok, with others filling in if things are going well for them.

The more I research, the more I think getting him in the 3rd is a league winner. As others have said, Hyde was over 1,000 yards on this team last year.

They don't trade Hopkins unless they believe DJ is a 3 down stud RB and plan to use him that way.

I'm in.

I'm in just because I drafted him in my dynasty and don't want to let go. He gave me my only championship. Yahoo has him projected for just 10 points. I just don't see him putting up only 10 points against KC. That's RB3 territory. This offense was decent last year. DJ is going to get to many scoring opportunities to only average 10 points a game.

Im in the same boat, although not a Dynasty he has been with me since his breakout rookie year in my main 2-person keeper league.

He has a major chip on his shoulder, Houston is a good offense, the O-line is better, and there are 150 targets up for grabs.... I like that recipe.

I agree - makes it a lot easier to grab a WR in the second if I know DJ is hiding around the corner in the third

I think folks are going to be seriously disappointed when he breaks under the weight of any volume. I'm staying away, possibly at cost to me, but I don't want to risk a third-round pick on him.

I'm seeing him late 4th-5th in mocks on Yahoo!

I like him there.  Of course, I also like Ridley and Sutton there.

I'm generally going running back early and receiver late this year because of value and clustering at the WR position. There's not that much of a difference between a second and a fifth at the WR position, so I'm letting it fall there. And bell cows are now truly endangered. So Johnson, even that late, is too early and costly for my blood.

I heard someone- maybe Hayden Winks from Rotoworld- call it bimodal drafting. He's hitting RBs early and then hammering them towards the end of drafts but avoiding the mess in the middle that typically underperforms. I think that is where I am at with Cam Akers being the one possible exception. I had Swift as an exception but the fact he hasn't practiced in a week makes me nervous.

Same here on Swift. As for the general sentiment, aside from Summerpalooza, which is QB-driven unless you're top two or three, I'm bimodal drafting, though I'm not clever enough to come up with a term. Actually don't think it's necessarily statistically correct in usage unless you've got RBs and WRs on proper axes, but what the heck, I'll go with it.

So Duke is the value play?
I get the sense that if (when?) DJ breaks then BOB will find someone else to carry the ball on base downs. I'm not going to pretend to know where from, but no matter what Duke does with the rock no coach wants to give him a lead role. From what I saw pre-Houston I can theorize why, but it's still odd he's never been given a single real shot.

I've seen DJ go as late at the 7th round in 12 teamers...he becomes a consideration for me in the late 5th.

It is odd because he is Miami’s (ncaa) all time leading rusher so he had a decent college workload. Do you just think his body cannot handle the punishment at this level?

It's really the only thing that makes any sense. I mean, from watching him years in Cleveland I get it. Couldn't tell you how many times I watched him get tackle and whoever I was watching with would turn to each other and say something along the lines of - 'think he gets up?' Just odd given how productive he is that he wasn't once given a shot to do more.

Interesting, thanks for the insight. I just can’t recall another player (maybe Drake prior to moving in from Miami) that has always produced at that position as a runner and receiver but never got more work....ever. He has received 10 or more carries in a game 4 times in 5 years (with a high of 13) and has a career rushing average of 4.4 (and great receiving chops). It must be the lack of confidence that his body can take it.

I remember this about Duke. I think he had to leave a Cleveland/Jets game back when Fitzpatrick was QB because he took some awful wallops. He had gained a ton of yards and was carving up the Jets, but got creamed a few times. Just lumber. I think he left.

That’s where I would take him.  Or at 4.10 if I was confident the turn was going to pick RBs and a couple others I liked were already gone.

so roughly the same.

No one is talking about how Houston has a new offensive coordinator. Last year is not this year for anything.
BOB is the omnipresent ruler in HOU. IIRC every RB under BOB has had at least 250 carries, whether they should have or not.

I don’t expect DaJo to be much different other than he’s a more capable receiver than some of the recent Houston backs.

i just read an interview with DaJo & he sounded ticked. He has a chip on his shoulder from Hopkins getting all the news over the trade. I like guys like that. I think DaJo returns to close to 2016 form. If I can get him in the 5th and get solid RB2 numbers out of him it’s a win. Anything else is icing on top.

Jerious Norwood.

So anyone starting DJ this week vs Chiefs? You'd think they would be playing from behind maybe he gets a lot of passes?

I have him starting in my dynasty PPR league: It’s between DJ, Gibson, or Edelman. Pretty easy choice to go with DJ so I have someone to root for in game 1.

I'm starting him in my flex with confidence.  If the ghost of carlos hyde can get 1000 yards on this team then the ghost of DJ can too.
This is my plan too.  The Da. Johnson comeback train rolls out of the station on Thursday night!

The return to a TOP-10 RB in PPR formats.

I have to decide between David Johnson and Raheem Mostert.  Tough call for me.
I trust the idiot coach & gm (who gave up the farm to get DJ) to try and justify that horrible trade by giving DJ all the chances to succeed in the running and passing game. I worry more about the smart young coach who has 3 capable backs and might use them all by comparison. Just my 2 cents ;)

I am in the exact same situation.  I am also leaning towards DJ for these very reasons.

This is me as well. BOB is going to force the ball to him. No doubts.

I just paid a 2021 2nd for him in my 10 team/11 man keeper league with .25ppc and 1.50ppr (I thought we switched down to 1.25 in off season, I was wrong).  He’ll be one of my 3 weekly RB starters alongside Henry and Chubb.  Trying to compete, so a late 2nd is worth the one year potential

Good price for a contender imo
