Plus it's a business. You got partners, mainly TV and they don't pay you to sit players like it's the NBA or something. You got your fans, season ticket holders who already have to pay for two preaseason games for 7-8 homes games a year.  I believe,as I said earlier, his workload should have been scaled back when they were eliminated and using him like a workhorse since that time is something I think is a truly bad short sighted decision but if he was healthy I think he should have been playing. Only reason I see to not play someone this week is if they  need rest for playoffs or are not healthy.

Because he would go down in history as one of only 3 guys to do it. And forever, people would mention the Arizona Cardinals when talking about all-time great RBs. You don't think that's a good thing if you own the team?

Well a bit concerning in that he just said best case is MCL an worse case is multi-ligament ACL and threw out Bowman as example.

So it's good for the team to not have him ready for next season? The Cardinal will be lucky if they win 5 games next year without him.

I hate that he got hurt, but using your logic, he shouldn't have been playing the last 2 weeks either; those games were "meaningless" for the Cards, as well. 

Your opinion that this game is meaningless seems to be coming from a FF perspective (since most leagues don't play in week 17), in which case, it is a bad argument to say a player shouldn't play in a game that is meaningless for FF.

If you owned something that cost you millions of dollars and you couldn't replace and using that resource would either result in no benefit to you or potentially very negative results, would you put it in harm's way? 

Really, your question about all these players is simple. the answer is no, clearly, by any logical measure. But the NFL is a business that doesn't want deal with the backlash of resting star players as the NBA rightfully does (yet catches grief over).  But football is a much more injury-likely sport so really playing any player at anytime you are eliminated is 100% counter-productive, especially when you could actually get better draft picks by not playing them. that's not tanking. that's smart resource management.  But the NFL doesn't care about that and so teams don't (or aren't allowed).  And people that think unique star players should carelessly risk their careers are just buying the NFL product. Hook, line, and sinker.

Look, I own him in dynasty too. And I'm a Cardinals season ticket holder. But you just don't start sitting your stars when you're out of the playoffs. Name one team who did that this year.

As mad as Green was, I could see his benching affecting his willingness to re-sign with a team.

The Cardinals likely want Johnson staying with the team after his rookie contract expires, and keeping him happy letting him play for records could play a signficant role in that sort of decision.  Speculative of course, but it isn't hard to imagine that there could be sound business decisions involved in playing him, as well as sitting him.

So because nobody is doing it it's not optimal? I think teams are really dumb marching their franchise QB back out on the field with 3 mins to go down 3 scores too but they do it all the time.

Bottom line here: Your train of thought may be correct on paper. But that's never been the standard convention of how it plays on the field. Never has been, never will be. It's just not how it has ever or will ever work. Go write a letter to the owners/GMs of these teams if it bothers you that much. It will make no difference.

It's going to take a career ending injury to a franchise QB and things will start to shift but I agree that it's certainly not SOP right now.

 
Roto: According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, initial tests on David Johnson's injured left knee showed meniscus damage, though his ACL remains intact.

Arians said the other day that David Johnson could average 200 yards per game. I don't think they have any intentions of scaling back his workload next year.

 
Coach Bruce Arians said he'd like to get David Johnson 30 touches per game this season.

We've heard this "30 touches per game" thing from Arians before, and it's never exactly translated to that much work, but Johnson did average over 23 per game in 2016 and appears capable of more. Arians said Johnson is still too young to be "overused" at 25 years old. The Cardinals know they can't ask Carson Palmer to throw 40 times a week at his age in this downfield offense, so putting more on Johnson's plate is their best chance at winning games. Johnson is the early leader in the clubhouse to go No. 1 overall in fantasy drafts this summer.
