RB David Johnson, Retired (7 Viewers)

Dunno what’s gonna happen, but signing AP really adds a layer of misery to anyone owning DJ this year.
I have Johnson in two leagues (strangely enough I'm 6-0 and 5-1 in those two) and I do not have much concerns about AP. Even if last week was a true reflection of what he still is, Johnson is just so much better at this point. I guess losing some volume would hurt but the joy of just getting him back would over-ride any concerns.

Sooo, with Palmer now on IR to return, it feels like reaching to hold onto DJ in re-draft. If the Cards are not .500 by around Week 11/12, I don't see AZ rushing him into action.

It's possible, but why don't you just wait and see what happens. If you've held onto DJ up until this point, waiting another four week or so probably doesn't hurt.

A DJ owner just sent an offer to another owner for Martin in one of my redraft leagues.

DJ & Henry for Dougie. Martin owner also owns Murray, so Henry is a nice fit.

It seems fair if he comes back by week 12.

Redraft I guess I can see it if the team trading DJ needs immediate production to make the playoffs. But it seems like a move handing the other team the trophy.

To the guy above who said Peterson had one good game in 3 years. If we are going to say such misinformed rhetoric such as "AP has one good game in 3 years," remember before he got hurt last year in in the 2nd game in 2016, he had a season of 327/1485/11 and a 30/222/0 in 2015 a year after jacking up his knee. Thats well within 3 years, and no, no mistakes allowed when you are trying to bash a player.

But by all means continue to just say things. Another guy just said because of the game flow of last week, getting down big early and losing the QB to injury...shows AP is who we thought? I bet that guy thinks he is a football expert. Just say things, seems to be a trend here. This place is where people come to hype their players to feel good about them.

DJ is no threat to lose out to Peterson in the future, but this year, DJ may not even play and if he does, he just missed 10 weeks when he comes back. Peterson will have some run until fantasy playoffs for sure. But hope just saying stuff about AP makes you feel better, because it isnt accurate.

So, what's your source for this "stuff you're saying?"  Because your belief that DJ won't lost out to Peterson in the future, but that he might lose out this year isn't any more accurate than the guy who said that the game flow last week shows that AP is who he thought.

So, it's OK for you to "just say stuff,"  but not OK for others?

I've got DJ in a keeper league; got him as a rookie for cheap, and can keep him for 2 more years (after 2017).  His salary is 7% of the cap for the rest of his contract, while the other top guys are/will be around 35% of the cap, typically.  Even the hot rookies from this year (Hunt, Fournette, Cook, Mixon, McCaffrey) are like 20%-25% of the cap.  There are a couple cheaper top RBs (Ajayi, Howard, etc) than DJ, but he is, by far, the biggest value in that league.

That being said, I'm considering offering him to the Zeke owner.  He's all but out of the hunt for the playoffs & Zeke is his best player.  Zeke's cost would be prohibitive against keeping him next year (especially if the suspension is bumped to next year) & I'm worried with Carson's injury, Ari will fall out of playoff contention & DJ might not return. I will wait until after the hearing on the 30th to decide, but I might trade 2 future years of super-cheap DJ for a run at the championship this year.

That Rams game was a disaster. What would Johnson even be coming back to? He's eligible to come back Week 10, but that feels like a pipe dream with no pressure to reach the playoffs, Arians saying this is his last season, backup QB(s)...

Still feel like DJ can help teams for the FF playoffs.

1)  He’ll be able to start to work on conditioning shortly.

2)  He injured a wrist, not a knee.  DJ (and any RB) needs a wrist to play, but it’s not his/their money maker.

3) Ultimately, I think both DJ and ARI will want him to play if he’s ready.  It’s not a matter of ‘playoff contention’ especially given the nature of his injury.

Disagree. If they lose to SF after the bye there is little to no chance he will play this year. Doubt they beat Seattle or Houston after that game but they could be 4-6 with DJ back for his first game if they beat SF. If they are 3-7 with Jac/LA/Ten staring at them they will shut him down. No reason to play him.

If this was a knee or concussion related issue, I would agree. I don’t see the risk of him re-injuring his wrist being high so his injury risk is similar to every other player and maybe less because he will be fresh by week 12.

Why would a team sit their star player just because they are out of the playoffs and there is not a risk of re-injuring the wrist?

Would the Bucs sit Martin the final 4 games?  Falcons sit Freeman?  Bears sit Howard?  There will be a lot of teams out of the playoffs by week 12 and they probably won’t run their players into the ground, but they won’t make them inactive.

***my only disclaimer is that I’m not a doctor or trainer so my opinion is based off the belief that there is little risk to re-injurying the wrist.  It sounds like week 12 would not be rushing him back...it would be a typical recovery period.

I'm not loving this.  Two years of DJ at that price is huge.

If he’s healthy...why would he not play and not be asked to do the job he’s paid to do?

I'm in agreement. At some point Zeke is going to serve his suspension; it's not a matter of if but when. DJ's injury wasn't to his lower body, so there's little to worry about once he returns. Would you rather have a healthy DJ with two years left or Zeke staring at a six-game suspension? I'd prefer the former. Making a run at the championship means taking risks, but I wouldn't mortgage my future with a stud for a back who won't be around the help next season for a chunk (assuming he gets cleared to play the rest of the season). Just my two cents.

Because he could pick up an injury that might have been avoided in a lost season. Assuming Palmer, Fitz and Arians are done after this season, the Cardinals will be in rebuilding mode in 2018. Might as well have your cornerstone fully healthy for camp.

yeah I don't see it.....Christmas was mentioned as a possible return date. could easily be 4-10 going into that game. Sorry guys. I'd love to have him back too. I have a great team with Bell and Fournette and lots of other top players. Starting DJ/Bell/Fournette would be amazing for the playoff run but there is no need to risk him if their season is lost. I guess we'll see. I'm praying for a win against SF and hopefully they luckbox another win before thanksgiving.....then maybe he's back.

I think organizationally (and personally to Johnson) that would not be a platform by which to build trust within the rest of the team.  Also, Arians just came out and said he's not retiring.  Fitz has not committed to this being his last year.  To me, it would be incredibly disrespectful to ask Fitz (greatest player in franchise history) to put his body on the line while allowing a healthy Johnson to rest.

So they should sit him for 2018 too then.  If he is healthy he will play this year.

Huh? Where did I say that? What I SAID was that getting his wrist to 100 percent would be the prudent choice if Arizona is out of contention. It's not like he would be coming back at full health for Week 12. He needs to find a splint that works, which means he needs some sort of protection for the wrist.

I have DJ on a keeper team that's currently 6-1 and would love to get him back, but there's no guarantee he's returning if Arizona doesn't win another game between now and Thanksgiving. And snide comments aren't really necessary on the boards. I get what you're saying, but you could've said it differently.

What you actually SAID that he could risk an injury in a lost season by coming back this year.  Then you went on to say the Cardinals would be in full rebuild mode in 2018.  The connection the other poster made was if it's logical to sit a healthy DJ out this year because it's a "lost season," why doesn't that logic apply to what you have labeled a rebuilding (i.e.-"lost") season in 2018.  If it's logical (according to you) for them to sit a healthy DJ this year, that logic should also apply to next year (since you've already conceded it's a lost season, as well).

The point is that NFL teams don't usually think that way.  They might be more likely to give him more time to recover, but if he's healthy enough to play, "sitting" him usually doesn't happen.  If you are arguing that he won't be healthy, that's a different argument, and one that I doubt you, I, or any other poster have enough information about to give an actual informed opinion.  There's been no news, that I'm aware of, about his recovery that would indicate that he won't be 100% by Thanksgiving, or that he will be.

I said '18 could be a rebuilding year. When has a team ever sat a fully healthy player for a full season? That's utter nonsense. What I said is that it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to see the Cardinals sit DJ until his wrist is fully healed, instead of trotting them out there and running the risk of aggravating it or suffering another injury in the midst of a season that's already been determined. And if the wrist is 100-percent healed, why would he need a splint?

1) When has a team ever sat a fully healthy player for a third of the season?  That’s utter nonsense.  Either you apply the logic equally, or people will question your hypocrisy.

2-You didn’t say that; maybe it’s what you meant, but not what you said

3-Do you have any idea how many football players wear splints, braces, padding, wraps, etc who are “100% healed?”  Hell, many offensive lineman wear knee braces on both knees without ever having suffered a knee injury.

I get your point: if DJ isn’t healthy and the Cards have nothing to play for, they might not rush him back.  I think you’re misconstruing “wearing a splint” with not being healthy, though.  If he, the medical staff, and the coaches think he can play effectively, while wearing a brace, that’s “healthy,” and he’ll probably play, IMO.

I think DJ does play when he's ready. I can't imagine the team wants him to go nearly two full years (from January 1, 2017 to early September 2018) with practically no game work. That's a recipe for rust when 2018 rolls around.

I want you to be right. I love watching him play but this team's season is probably over and they will know it before he returns. So the Cards may be weighing if they want to subject him to injury late.  Like, what if he fears an ACL in week 16?  Pretty much sinks next year also.   But maybe they don't see it like that.

That sounds like a man that's been told if there's nothing on the line for us, you may not be playing anytime soon.

These guys want to play but he means so much to the team, what's the logic to play him if they are 4-9 and pretty much done?

I've been on the "he will play" wagon but not if they are still playing for something.  Unfortunately, as I've watched the cards lose these past few weeks, I see his chances get dinner with each loss.

Might as well never have him practice either, he might tear an ACL.

As much as everyone wants him to play (myself included), I don't think it's his call. Will most likely come down to staff and management decisions.
This is false and is every time someone says this with an injured player. Once a medical staff deems him healthy they can't just hold him out because the team has nothing to play for. Johnson or any player can file a grievance and would win easily. Do you think the Cardinals want to alienate their best player? These guys want to play.

It's not the same thing and you know it. I expect more from you.  Everyone knows there is always a risk witeach snap but there is a business decision to be made here and when you have fitz on the tail end, Carson at a crossroads, I just don't think they put DJ out there with a Target on his back if they are obviously not going to make the playoffs.   It might be different if they were fully staffed and had a chance but everyone knows he will be subject to massively loaded boxes and hits if heisoutthere without Palmer.   Nobody is going to respect that passing game.  We all still remember how horrid they were without Palmer.  Nobody is doing that for a team that is eliminated and probably just going through the motions.

I certainly hope not. We'll see what happens in a month or so. Not sure what rehab time is for his injury.

Did somebody hijack your account?  You usually have good stuff. You sure you're not heavily biased on this for some reason?  Players get held out all the time and when asked they always say "sure,I want to play,ay but I have to listen to the coaches and docs and do what's best Interestfor the team".

If they don't think it's a good idea for him to play,ay for whatever reason, they will justify it in a way where it makes sense. When's the last time you saw a player mad and file a grievance because he got told he can't play? Bryant this week?  How did that end? Coach told him "I'm the coach..you're the player.  Do what's best for the team and shut up"

Lol, no it isn't. ACL injuries are non contact as much as contact. You can't hold a healthy player out, if he wants to play, just because they can't make the playoffs, especially a high profile one.

I guess it's possible to hold him out in a lost season when you consider what happened on his last carry of 2016. Narrowly escaped a bad knee injury that could have killed 2017 rather than the wrist injury that did him in.

All that said, I think most coaches - and Arians is no exception - know that every play is a risk that can destroy a player's season or career, but that's the game.

Lol, totally different if they are sitting one game, or they aren't medically cleared. If he is cleared they can't hold him out if he wants to play. How would they justify it to the players union or the player himself?

Or the fans that pay money to see these guys play.  Unless he's not cleared until week 17, anything before and he's playing.

Isnt DJ on IR?  Coaches dont have to do anything uf they decide to shut him down except not make him one of their IR-return guys.  Certainly no ground for a greivance out of that, since there is no contractual obligation to "return" anyone...

This is just what I was thinking. You don't have to activate him.

If this were some shaky knee injury I could see the concern about them holding him out when he's allegedly ready to come back.  But a broken wrist?  There's not really re-injury risk there any more than if his risk was healthy all along.

Going by what some people have been saying in here you'd think teams are all just sitting their best players as soon as they're out of contention.  Like man, I hope the Colts don't lose again next week or they may just bench TY Hilton for the last 8 weeks to make sure he doesn't get hurt.

Realistically, Hilton will still be playing week 17 even if they're 2-13 at the time.  And so will DJ if his wrist is healed up.

If Luck is ready to play week 15, do you think the Colts bring him back then or sit him and wait until next year?

Luck's injury is very different because it IS an issue that has the potential to linger for years (as it already has) or be re-injured a la the "shaky knee injury" that I had mentioned.  That said, I still think they would play him if he's cleared in week 15.

That's fair. As a Cardinals' fan and a DJ owner in dynasty, I hope they shut him down. But I really have no idea what they are going to do.

If he was medically cleared and eligible to return from IR and the coaches wouldn't do it, he could easily file a grievance and win. I don't know why the Cardinals would do that. Alienate your beat player, set a bad example for future players, and current players.

What kind of message does that send to everyone on the team? Hey guys go out there and put your bodies on the line for us, but we are holding our best player out because we can't win this year and will save him for when we get better players. Come on, that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of and no team would do that.

We will see what happens but given the three likely outcomes if he comes back to a team with no playoff hopes (1. Plays and does well, doesn't change they miss playoffs, 2.plays and injures himself late in season,3. Does not play), I just don't see the business decision for playing him.

I love watching him play and wish he would but if I were writing the checks, I wouldn't put him out there unless my team could get into the playoffs.  Just my opinion.

I agree with your concept, but it is isn't their choice if he wants to play and is deemed fully healthy. It is totally up to Johnson because he could file a grievance and what can the Cardinals say? He isn't one of our best 46 players? or they activate him and never let him touch the field? That won't go over well, now your best player is going to want to be traded, and all your other players are going to be pissed because you sent them into games without their best player while he was healthy, and those players will also be thinking what if that is me next year? No one will want to play for them. It is a dumb way to approach it for the Cardinals, playing for next year when Johnson and other players won't want to play for you. It is saving pennies, while burning dollars.

Now if Johnson is never fully healthy then he can't do anything and just like last year with A.J. Green, sometimes players need to be protected from themselves.
