It makes 0 sense that Javonte was ever in danger of being cut. Zero. That's what was reported. Here's what happened to my understanding. During OTAs and minicamp, Javonte was looking sluggish, slow and overweight. Sean Peyton had a talk with him before the break, and Javonte proceeded to drop 11 pounds in five weeks. He's then looked completely different in camp. He's faster, more athletic, has acceleration and looks closer to his pre-injury form.
So far in camp, the Broncos really like Jaleel McLaughlin and Estime. Blake Watson is on the NFI list and still hasn't practiced in camp yet. Perine really impressed in OTAs, but not so much in camp. With Javontes improved conditioning, he looks safe to make the team and very likely to be the starter again.
I disagree that his job was safe. Javonte had a horrible 2023 season after a devastating injury. The Broncos responded by adding TWO running backs. I know dynasty players want to protect their assets, but RBs are practically disposable in today's NFL.
Javonte came into OTAs overweight, under conditioned and really lacking in confidence and it showed. During the break, he decided he was going to fight for his position. That's where we are now.
