RB Javonte Williams, DEN (2 Viewers)

Here's what happened to my understanding. During OTAs and minicamp, Javonte was looking sluggish, slow and overweight. Sean Peyton had a talk with him before the break, and Javonte proceeded to drop 11 pounds in five weeks. He's then looked completely different in camp. He's faster, more athletic, has acceleration and looks closer to his pre-injury form.

So far in camp, the Broncos really like Jaleel McLaughlin and Estime. Blake Watson is on the NFI list and still hasn't practiced in camp yet. Perine really impressed in OTAs, but not so much in camp. With Javontes improved conditioning, he looks safe to make the team and very likely to be the starter again.
It makes 0 sense that Javonte was ever in danger of being cut. Zero. That's what was reported.

I disagree that his job was safe. Javonte had a horrible 2023 season after a devastating injury. The Broncos responded by adding TWO running backs. I know dynasty players want to protect their assets, but RBs are practically disposable in today's NFL.

Javonte came into OTAs overweight, under conditioned and really lacking in confidence and it showed. During the break, he decided he was going to fight for his position. That's where we are now.

Estime is a fifth rounder in a bad draft class. I hardly see that as a move a team makes when they are looking for someone to lead the backfield carries. I see that as much more of an indictment of their depth. Maybe he turns out to beat the odds and become a solid producer, but I'm willing to make that bet.

Blake Watson is on the NFI list and still hasn't practiced in camp yet

the reason why the speculation spread about Javonte is that all the local media fully believes they'll keep only 3 RBs.

They like Blake Watson, so expect them to keep him on NFI as long as possible and play him little in the preseason so they can put him on practice squad.

I can see the RBs next year being Estime, Jaleel and Blake.

Observations:
  • At the end of Payton's tenure in NO, his RB usage was always quite high...particularly during the peak Kamara/Ingram years and as they shifted away from having Brees toss it 40 times/game.
  • The Broncos finished 27th in RB snaps last year.
  • Whoever plays QB for the Broncos this year, they won't be peak Brees.
  • But their OL is actually quite solid
  • 2024 is a contract year for Javonte
I know there is buzz around Estime, but I think Javonte gets first crack, and the opportunity here is being a bit underestimated. It's fair to surmise that Javonte was still getting that knee back last season and if he's marching to Payton's beat...and don't discount that, I could see a ressurgence.

here are Javonte's preseason touches for those who haven't seen him run this year...

That Gibbs guy is a MUST follow on Twitter.

Javonte looked pretty good to me last year, but I am wondering if we will see more tackle breaking than he showed last year. His tackle breaking in college broke models.

He's gonna catch more balls this year than projected by most, for sure. That coach, and that QB? Might be 100 receptions by backs this year.

I'm a big contract guy. It looks like Javonte is on the last year of his contract. If it becomes apparent that Javonte hasn't regained form or rather, let's just say Estime produces at an equal value to Javonte. At some point, I think you start to fear that the Broncos may start giving carries to McLaughlin and Estime the "future" of the RB room.

I get the impression the Broncos are going to be willing to turn the page. That's the increased awkwardness of his situation, he's probably not going to be team next year. I think the team is suffering from $32,000,000 in Russell Wilson dead cap still in 2025. They won't be trying to hand out a big contract to a guy with that injury history (especially if he has not returned to form).

He's another guy where the value and potential upside is too good to pass for where he's being drafted. The big question for me coming into the year was the QB situation and I'm not going to go too crazy and expect too much from Nix but he's looked solid, has good legs to scramble for first downs and might be a guy that can keep the chains moving. Javonte has a good pedigree, 2 years removed from knee injury, no real competition if he plays well, decent OL, coach that likes to run and he's a decent receiver. He's another guy that you are drafting at his floor and has some upside...a perfect #3 RB.

Estime is being regarded as a bulldozer on the team. My main concern is Estime will get a significant portion of goal line touches.

those are all concerns if you're drafting him for dynasty purposes but in redraft if you're Payton why wouldn't you use him to the max if you don't necessarily care about him long term?

the Denver RBs had 5 TDs last year. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over who's going to get the handful of goal line touches.

Because you want to develop players who will be on your team next year. Might as well see what you have if you've been eliminated from playoffs, can Audric be the guy? I don't know, we're not playing for much, let's give him some of Javonte's carries and see what he can do with them. As opposed to waiting until 2025 to figure out if this guy can carry the load.

Same concept with Jaleel. There are two young hungry RB under contract waiting for an opportunity and they might just give it to them as opposed to going into 2025 with more questions than answers.

it doesnt look like he has much of a choice. Team didnt bring in another RB.

good news is, Javonte has looked good so far in camp. He lost weight, came in faster, his burst is back.

Remember hes recovering from an ACL injury with other ligament tears as well. that rehab takes longer than your run of the mill ACL. I've done a lot of research on this and last year I avoided him like the plague. This year, the signs actually point to a turnaround. I"m getting him as my RB3/4 where I can get away with it and I'm happy to get him at that price.

to add to this, Chubb is in the same spot Javonte was in this time last year. I'm avoiding Chubb this year for the same reason I avoided Javonte last year

Estime was a lot more interesting when Javonte wasn't getting glowing camp reports.

Jaleel is the RB2, I don't think you should be worried about them benching their #1 RB for a 5th rounder, who really hasn't made any noise this summer

A lot can happen...Denver can draft a RB in the draft next year making them all irrelevant. It will come down to play at the end of the day. It looks like Javonte will get the starting nod and he'll have to play well to keep it but it's not like they have a proven guy pushing him/waiting in the wings...they have some backups with talent like nearly every team in the NFL. He's gotten good camp buzz, he's looked good in the touches he's had, he's slimmed down and appears hungry and the price is right.

I'm rooting for him. I drafted him in my dynasty as a rookie and he looked like a poor man's Emmitt Smith. Last year, he looked like a rich man's Ezekiel Elliot circa 2022 - 2023. He needs to be better than the 3.5 YPC he posted last year and he also needs to be significantly better than Jaleel and Audric as well.

I just try not to get too attached to RB, the most disposable of any skill position player. Again though, if Javonte balls out for the first 6-8 weeks and looks like the old Javonte that means he's a much better player than Jaleel and Audric. Gotta see what happens and if he can stay healthy. It's just that Sean Payton didn't draft the guy and what he's "done" for Sean Payton is "not much" and Sean Payton has two of "his guys" waiting in the wings to take over.

These coaches have egos, Sean Payton and the GM would love to get the same production out of a RBBC with Jaleel and Audric, because then they get to save money and call themselves geniuses. Plus they could then use the compensatory from losing Javonte in Free Agency to draft ANOTHER RB to add to their RBBC. They'll be able to roster 3 plus RB for the price it would probably cost to pay Javonte for 1 year of his next deal. Especially when you're dealing with $32,000,000 in dead cap from the Russell Wilson fiasco. A team who made that mistake isn't in a hurry to pay a bunch of money for a guy with a bad knee. That's my cynical, realistic view of the situation.

Estime is regarded as someone who moves bodies. Unfortunately, coaching staffs and front offices don't play fantasy football.

agreed. but at the same time if the team thought he couldnt get it done you would think they would have signed someone or drafted someone. This clearly didnt happen.

there was actually an interview with the coach I saw early in camp. he even said its a 2 year recovery for his type of injury (which confirmed my suspicion) and then he sang the guys praises for dropping weight and coming into camp in great shape and looking faster.

that was the beginning. I kind of expected Javonte would be looking better this year. and the fact they didnt bring someone in made me think they still believe in this guy despite some reports saying otherwise.

and so far the camp reports i have seen are all positive on Javonte.

this isnt enough to bump him up on my board into RB1/2 territory, but I love him as a RB3/4 where hes currently being drafted. if the reports are true, you could end up with a RB2 at the price of a RB3/4. maybe even an outside chance of low end RB1 if he fully regains the form he had prior to injury and steps forward a bit due to experence. while I"m not expecting that. Literally everything would need to go well for him to sniff RB1 territory, but RB2 is well within reach.

Yikes. Looks pretty average to me. These clips made me feel worse about him to be honest.
A lot of folks around here are suffering from premature Javantelation.
Don't get me wrong, I like Williams and he was on my radar, but those clips didn't make me feel better about him at all.
Yeah I gathered as much from your previous post.

Looked good to me vs GB, and even got open for an easy receiving TD called back because Nix was over the line by half a foot.

At his current price he's an easy pickup for me in most drafts.

Average? He looked to average over it's only nine touches in the preseason but he averages 4.6 yards per carry and 10 yards/reception. What's the problem?
Probably sold him for pennies on the dollar and wants to feel good about it.

I actually thought Javonte looked good end of the year last year, and he's supposedly more sharp now.

But really, at the ADP, seems like a no-brainer.

I'm going simply on the eye test. I didn't see anything exciting there. Seemed pretty average.

He isn't the same player he was prior to getting hurt and I feel that's what maybe people are expecting.

That being said, I would have him as a low end RB3. I don't see where the RB2 talk comes from. Especially on that team.

I don't have him anywhere.

Are we back to where people can't have a difference of opinion? Guess so.

Denver OL is middle of the pack, but very good at run blocking. Javonte will get a minimum 200 carries this season. I just got him in the 9th round and I've got a massive boner because of it. He's a guaranteed RB2 at RB3/4 price.

Does your insurance cover vision care? 👨‍🦯

I kid. I definitely saw far more to get excited about than to be concerned about. He had one negative play and still looks like a load to take down.

I really don't. My first draft is Saturday and it's the FBG one.

Like I said, I would take him as a #3RB. Never said I wouldn't. He is a no-brainer as a #4. Of course.

People have very short memories.

I think RE the Twitter Clip:

Keep in mind: It's ALL of his touches. It's not a highlight tape to where every play is a hugely successful run or pass.

My take away is that he looks much more explosive on some of those than anything I saw last year.

yeah, you need to put it into perspective. the bar is pretty low at his ADP. And it is exhibition.

but at the point hes being drafted, you are normally getting a backup RB. possibly even your second backup. its crazy how low hes being valued in some circles.

I'm not going out and telling you to draft him as your RB1 or even a high end RB2. I'm telling you to go draft him a few picks ahead of his adp and hes likely your RB3 or RB4. if he gives you RB2 production thats great. but hes highly unlikely not to give you value at the place you can draft him right now.

thats my point.

agreed. He also caught some passes and what wasn't on the clip was a TD where he caught a 15 yard pass in the end zone but Nix was scrambling and crossed the LOS so the play was negated. Early in the preseason Javonte was on my "have no interest team" and now he's a guy I'm looking to scoop up where I can. Not expecting him to be some top 10 stud but a serviceable #2/#3 back that you can plug in or use as trade value to a team in desperate need of a RB.

Giving him the "This is his 2nd year back from the ACL and he should finally be himself" benefit of the doubt: I think his floor is in the RB2 range. I think he's got the talent, opportunity, and situation to sneak into the back end of RB1 land. I'm not predicting that or planting a flag on it. But I don't think it's outrageous by any stretch.

I like to shop for value, and when I see potential RB2 production being drafted in the RB30 range and around the 8th or 9th round of drafts, then I'm in.

I don't care much about pre season stats, but I do watch and see if there are positives and negatives when they play. I also am aware last year was a total right off, and that he has shown up to camp looking much better according to his coach. Last game he showed more pop in his step than anything from last year, had a couple of nice catches with one TD called back, and had an awesome blitz pickup vs GB#55 that gave Nix time to hit his target.

I fail to see many negatives so far that would dissuade me to pass him up at his current ADP.

Is Jav
Looked good to me vs GB, and even got open for an easy receiving TD called back because Nix was over the line by half a foot.

At his current price he's an easy pickup for me in most drafts.
yeah, you need to put it into perspective. the bar is pretty low at his ADP.

I like to shop for value, and when I see potential RB2 production being drafted in the RB30 range and around the 8th or 9th round of drafts, then I'm in.

The blitz pickup is what is going to keep him on the field, especially with a rookie QB.

here are Javonte's preseason touches for those who haven't seen him run this year...

Yikes. Looks pretty average to me. These clips made me feel worse about him to be honest.
Average? He looked to average over it's only nine touches in the preseason but he averages 4.6 yards per carry and 10 yards/reception. What's the problem?
Probably sold him for pennies on the dollar and wants to feel good about it.
I don't have him anywhere.

Are we back to where people can't have a difference of opinion? Guess so.
Of course you don’t now. :)
I really don't. My first draft is Saturday and it's the FBG one.

Like I said, I would take him as a #3RB. Never said I wouldn't. He is a no-brainer as a #4. Of course.
Only redrafts? My daddy said not to associate with redraft only players.

bye Felicia 👋🏻
Felicia, lol, alrighty then

I'm with you on that. I dont put much stock into the pre season stats either.

What I look for is signs the player might be gimpy. If a RB is making sharp cuts and doing all the things a RB should. in a QB I look to see if there is anything with the throwing motion that would be off. (especially if that QB is coming back from injury)

good stats are nice, but at this point in the season the guys blocking for you and/or the guys on the defense might be delivering pizza's next month instead of playing football. so its really hard to evaluate the player unless playing with the first team and against the other teams first team. the coachs run a pretty vanilla offense in the pre season too so you wont likely see more than one or two plays where they really show what they can do.
