RB Jo'Quavious “Woody” Marks, HOU (2 Viewers)

Lance Zierlein
Woody Marks is a perfect complementary back for Joe Mixon. He has good size and can play on all three downs. Automatic hands out of the backfield.

My thoughts on Woody Marks for Texans:
Balances patience with decisiveness, setting blocks into defenders & bursting past the collision. He glides through lanes with vision & enough shake to create missed tackles over the first two levels. He lacks breakaway speed in open field & contact power between the tackles. He’s experienced with sure hands as a pass catcher, with the ability to elude the first tackler in space. Marks projects as a slashing complementary back capable of finding yardage and adding value on passing downs.

I was honestly shocked this guy was drafted. I watch USC frequently, and unless a play was perfectly blocked Marks was useless as a runner. Has some decent pass catching ability, but nothing special. Honestly, kinda reminded me of another former Trojan in Joe McKnight, but less elusive.

I'm not sure he's necessarily better than Dare Ogubunwale. Fully expecting Chubb to be ahead of him and think people writing off Chubb are gonna be sorry if Mixon can't get/stay healthy.

Long-term, I think there is a greater than 50% chance the Texans 2026 starting RB isn't on the roster yet. They seem like a high draft pick or a Walker/Hall/Cook in FA kinda team to me, or maybe Kyren if the Rams are stingy, given the Caley connection?

I think the opportunity might be there for him to be a one year wonder as a rookie, and I mean for like a 7 game stretch or something. A guy that's gonna carve a role and then eventually luck into a big role for a while but ultimately gets churned away in 2026. But I feel like this backfield is ripe to be taken over by someone and I tend to agree with travdogg up above that they might not be on the roster today. Which is why Marks might actually have a chance to do something.

I don't think the Texans think Mixon is going to be viable and I think they have learned that Chubb isn't happening. They were a team I though might take a higher RB in the draft, and even though we said that about a bunch of teams, they did move their 2026 3rd rounder to move up and get him in the early 4th. Might have been panicky cause there was an early 4th run with Tuten, Skattebo and ETN but nevertheless you can kind of make the argument that the Texans view him as a day 2 RB. But legitimately probably not ready to take over a backfield and so I do think the Texans may very well be working the phones.

That said I have been taking a lot of this guy late in drafts as well as Tahj Brooks and Hunter and a couple others.

Buckle in, folks. Woody Marks with some fantastic pass pro reps.

Line is completely mugged up. Slovis sends Marks out. No one follows. Changes the protection to slide left. Marks is head up vs ILB Brian Asamoa and stones him.

I'm out of my chair in full applause.

Next, Marks on an island vs a blitzing DB. Marks takes away the inside shoulder. Marks is about to release hot, i.d.'s, and resets his feet. That's a W.

Two minute drill. Slide left protection. They're leaving Marks on an island with Asamoah. W

Another W vs Asamaoh. This time Marks moves right to left to pick him up. W

Special Teams reps matter for rookie running backs. Pay attention to this stuff. Marks (bottom left) checks the protection, sees that Nieman needs help and steps up for the chip. This all important stuff outside of the runs. W

Punt return duties. Marks fight off #56 Austin Keyes (6'0" 247) to work down the field and earn a tackle. W

Woody Marks on a nifty split zone run today picking up seven yards after contact.

Credit to the blocking up front and a devastating cut block by the H-back, Cade Stover.

DeMeco Ryans on Woody Marks (who rushed 7 times for 40 yards, 5.7 ypc, GREAT day):

“Definitely shined today.. running through 4 defenders, 3 defenders at times, still falling forward.”

Highlights RB pass pro too including Jawhar Jordan.

I love this kid. I have Marks & Pierce in one league. I was so mad they brought in Chubb.
Kid looks like he's got something. His first cutback was sharp to the backside and a really nice run for 10+. Next play was a good tough 7 yard gain up the middle. He's been pretty good in pass pro too. Missed one today but it was on a play action and he couldn't quite jump over there as Mills had to scramble away. As a Texans fan, I'd like him to fit in as the change of pace to whichever one of Mixon, Chubb, or Pierce starts. If Dare stays then he'll probably handle 3rd downs, but I think Marks is capable of doing that job soon.

Not inconceivable he ends up the best back here by mid season if Mixon doesn't make it back. Chubb did look better today than I thought he would, however.

Jo'Quavious "Woody" Marks rushed 7 times for 40 yards while catching his lone target for no gain in the Texans’ preseason Week 2 game against the Panthers.

Marks had a long gain of 12, and looked solid after Nick Chubb exited the game along with the other starters. The former USC tailback has some potential dynasty upside, but isn’t likely to be a helper in redraft leagues this season.

Yeah he looked good. And I just can't get myself to believe in the corpse of Nick Chubb or Joe Mixon. I am not 100% sold Chubb even makes the team. Marks is a screaming deal right now.

Anyone else getting a woody from watching Mr. Marks? While it'll likely be a rBBC, I see his upside being a Shady McCoy type as the season progresses. The competition doesn't seem that fierce given the Mixon situation and less than stellar backups. If this Mixon injury lingers as I expect I could see Woody eventually being RB1 and getting the lions share of work especially on passing downs. Definitely worth a late round pick for fantasy purposes.

I have several shares. I find it hard to believe he isn’t in for a significant role this year.

I have to pump the brakes on that one. Most of the noise from the analysts and the beats have been that with Mixon out it's either Pierce or Chubb getting early down work and Marks or Ogunbowale getting the later-down work.

I think that's smart. I mention McCoy not only because of their style but he was also a late round pick that shined in the 2nd half of the season. I think I got him in the 14th round of a keeper that year and the little guy carried my team for a few seasons.

Marks has looked way too good in action to pump the brakes too hard. He more than passes the eye test and IMO he’s the best of all the backs in the receiving game.

Some of the reports have been very positive. From what I've read, the people that seem to be calling this preseason correctly have pretty much said what I said before. Does that mean I'm right and you're wrong? No. Not at all. They could be wrong and I've been duped. But their arguments are more convincing than the glowing report from preseason or camp.

Not saying they’re not valid, but with Mixon’s ongoing foot issue, Chubb looking kinda mediocre, and Pierce looking very JAG-ish, I just don’t see how Marks doesn’t get an opportunity to shine here.

It’s hard to glean a ton from preseason, but to my (amateur at best) eye, Mark’s looks like the best RB on the team. His college record was impressive too.

Sure, maybe Chubb comes out and knocks off the rust when games count. Possible. But Dare is nothing special, and I suspect if Mixon were healthy he’d (Dare) be on the roster bubble.

I dunno - you’re right, it could bounce any way, but I think you can safely remove Pierce from that equation (which I hate to say because I have 2 shares on teams I could use the RB depth). Pierce just hasn’t looked good since his one solid year.

Also I’m not basing this on “reports” - I’m basing it on what I’ve seen on the field. If there’s a disconnect between what the beat guys are writing & what we’re seeing on the field, I find that a bit odd.

Unfortunately, I haven't read any reports. My opinion is just going off what I've been seeing in preseason and practice. He's passing the eye test. Excited for my Texans 🤞

Pierce just hasn’t looked good since his one solid year.
Except that Week 18 game last season when he ran for a career high 176 yards and a TD
Ok, sure. Fair. Against the 3-14 Titans, buoyed by a 92 yard TD. Otherwise he had 18 for 84, and was a blank in the receiving game.

A game that didn’t matter for either team, where Stroud only played like, 1 quarter?

But he did have that long TD so I won’t be the “if he didn’t have that long TD” guy. But I will be the “in a meaningless game against mostly scrubs” guy.
:)

I am pretty high on Marks (the fact the Texans dealt a 2026 3rd to get him carries a lot of weight IMO) but I don't see him being the workhorse...my guess is he will be part of an RBBC but will take a big slice of the receptions...all about expectations with a player like Marks...I look at him as a depth RB that I can hopefully spot start based on injuries and /or byes and anything other than that will be a bonus.

That’s how I’m looking at it too. His receiving profile. Strong pass catching profile. I have him above Ollie right now in who I am trying to grab in redraft.

Woody Marks out of duo. His sole responsibility is to react to what the linebacker declares. He does that effectively, with good burst and no wasted steps throughout the run. Six-yard gain on 1st and 10.

He's had one of the best preseasons of the rookie RBs.

Woody Marks is going to matter in fantasy.

I’m in. Our auction league (Superflex PPR, 10 teams, $250 cap, 20-man rosters) normally has rookie fever, but the other owners forgot about him and I bought him for $1 at the end.
