Anybody else super excited about Latavius Murray next year? 3 down back that could have 40-50 receptions next year.
Let's see what the Raiders do in the draft before getting super excited about Murray. But if they don't draft a RB in the 1st 3 rounds and Murray has the chance to be a RB that can get 240-260 carries and 40-50 receptions, then Murray could be a really nice RB2 next year.
With all the needs on both sides of the ball, Oakland would be stupid to draft a RB in the first 3 rounds.

Wait a minute..............
I agree with that. L Murray is definitely good enough to be your lead back, OAK needs help on the OL, at WR, and most everywhere on defense.

But this is the Raiders that we're talking about.

That's what I was thinking. Murray should get a chance next year he's earned it but it's the Raiders so anything could happen.

Can't see why they would sign DeMarco as a free agent when they already have a talented young back at a much cheaper price.

Their draft last year was pretty decent ...

Rotoworld:

Coach Jack Del Rio told reporters he considers Latavius Murray a "candidate" for the Raiders' 2015 starting running back job.
The takeaway is Del Rio stopping short of naming Murray a starter, although we wouldn't expect young players like Murray to be crowned in February, anyway. Del Rio praised Murray's size-speed combo, but said he "needs work on awareness and football IQ." Murray will certainly face competition in training camp. We like his chances of beating most anyone out.

Helu agreed to a two-year deal worth just over $4 million with the #Raiders.
Takes a little air out of Murray in PPR. Helu is nothing special but he is an excellent receiving back.
And that takes air out of Murray because? Signing a complementary back was always necessary because no MJD and RunDMC means more depth is needed. A change of pace back like Helu is a reasonable and logical choice and solidifies the view management's believes Murray leads.

He'll get 40-50 receptions, leaving Murray with AlMo numbers.

Maybe, but not all RB receptions are on third down. I think he's still a weapon in the passing game.

I think most LaMur owners would love to get AlMo production of the past 3 years.

DeMarco Murray to the Raiders would obviously kill any value Latavius has. I own Latavius so that makes it a lock DeMarco is going to be a Raider.

This is how i feel.I could see a week ago that they werent gonna be able to get a big name guy and spend enough so theyd probably make several token offers to any stud still available.

Such an oakland thing to do to spend huge money on an RB when they have one already with no miles and no salary. Demarco wouldnt get them closer to winning the division really either.

Is this DeMarco to the Raiders talk just random speculation?

I haven't heard anything other the the Eagles, who just signed Ryan Mathews.

ESPN's Adam Caplan reports the Raiders remain interested in free agent DeMarco Murray despite signing Roy Helu.
Helu is a role player. Murray is a feature back, one whose acquisition by the Raiders would throw a devastating wrench into the 2015 fantasy outlook of Latavius Murray. It's also possible the DeMarco interest is agent-driven, intended to drive up his price tag in talks with the Cowboys and Jaguars. (Or at least, that's what Dynasty owners of Latavius should be hoping.)

A league source tells Profootballtalk the Raiders are "making a run" at free agent DeMarco Murray.

PFT reports the Jaguars are also interested. The Raiders are desperate to reach the salary floor, and Murray is desperate to get paid, so perhaps we have a match. Oakland represents Murray's best shot at getting his annual $8 million. Considering California taxes and how noncompetitive the Raiders are, however, their money would likely have to vastly outstrip anyone else's.

I would say there is less than a 1% chance that DeMarco Murray lands in OAK.
It is in the slim-to-none category, unless it is all about the money and I don't get that vibe. Even with Murray, the Raiders probably won't sniff the playoffs, and I don't think that is how he would want to spend the remaining productive years he has left.

Trent Richardson joining Raiders with high expectationsExcerpt:

Latavius Murray will likely get as much of a chance as Richardson, who flamed out in Cleveland and in Indianapolis, to be the starter. But it’s clear the Raiders -- who had the 32nd ranked run offense in the NFL last season -- aren’t completely sold on Murray. They want to see him improve his football IQ. But Murray, who has 82 career rushes, is much more explosive than Richardson, who reportedly signed a two-year, $3.9 million deal.

Rotoworld:

Coach Jack Del Rio confirmed he expects Latavius Murray and Trent Richardson to compete for the Raiders' starting running back job.
Del Rio stressed the word "compete" to Richardson when he signed with Oakland last week. Murray is in the driver's seat as the favorite to start and should really run circles around Richardson if given a fair shake. But it's a bit concerning that the Raiders were so eager to add a running back, first chasing DeMarco Murray before then settling for T-Rich. Luckily for Murray, T-Rich has been one of the worst runners in the league the past couple seasons.

I like how it says he told Trent specifically that he has to compete but there is no blurb about Murray competing with Trent. Or maybe I'm trying to read into a useless situation that everyone pretty much expects Murray to knock the socks off Trent no matter how "easy" the playbook is.

The T-Rich signing could be interpreted as a vote of confidence for Latavius really.
That's just hopeful thinking. I think Murray should beat out Richardson, and quite possibly Richardson won't make the team (little guaranteed money), but signing another RB and talking about a RB competition (even if it is "coach speak"), can only be looked at as a vote of confidence if you are being naive. If they signed him and said "Richardson is a backup," that would be a vote of confidence. Signing another RB, and saying he has a chance to be the starter, can IN NO WAY, be construed as a vote of confidence for Murray.

Agreed. It's almost as if Milkman is saying that Oakland is thinking "well we already have a stud in Murray so let's just sign some crappy RB since it doesn't matter".

While I do think Murray should beat out Trent, as well, the way that they went after him tells me they do believe that they can turn Trent around and get something out of him. Of course like you said, they can also cut him after training camp with little to lose.

The team can not be totally confident in Murray because frankly he's never put a full season together carrying the load thus far. He's suffered injuries without even seeing much of a workload both seasons he's been in the league - and outside of one 90+ yard run on a Thursday Night (which was very impressive) he hasn't done all that much with his limited opportunities otherwise.

I don't have much (if any) faith that Trent will earn significant carries, but I'm fairly sure that the Raiders are hoping that he can/does.

If you are a Murray owner, I think the offseason went as well as humanly possible.

With DMC and MJD gone, they had two slots to fill. There's always a fear that the Raiders bring in someone good enough to warrant a timeshare. By signing Helu, seemingly a 3rd down back only, and TRich, this has to be great news if you are hoping for a big season from Murray.

One could envision a draft that the Raiders take no running backs, with the thinking being that the 3some of Murray, TRich and Helu is stronger than the 2014 version of DMC, MJD, and Murray. There is of course, always the chance that a late rounder or UDFA turn in a viable threat, but it seems less likely. It sure looks like the Raiders were plugging a hole, so they didn't have to take a back in the draft.

I think TRich could be released before the season for a younger, better model, but I could also see the Raiders going into the season with these three as their backs, which you have to love as a Murray owner.

If it weren't Trent it would be another RB. Let's be honest here...they were looking for someone to be their starter. They went after Demarco and got outbid. After that, they still weren't satisfied with just Latavius...so they got Trent. Now Trent is "Del Rio's guy"...hand picked by the head coach. We know how coaches like to bring in "their guys". We all know Latavius is more explosive than Trent...but we also know the ridiculous egos of head coaches in the NFL. Del Rio was never the smartest apple in the bunch...but now he has his guy. He'll give T-Rich every opportunity to get the starting gig. Whether Trent legitimately wins the "competition" or not, I think JDR will give him more than his fair share of opportunities since he was who JDR picked.

Every team needs 3-4 RBs. The Le'Veon Bells and Matt Fortes of the world are rare. Not really worried about Trent.

I'm projecting Jeremy Hill and Martavis Bryant as my two keepers next year.

But I have Latavius as keeper-eligible, and I can trade him for draft considerations, so I'll be keeping a keen eye on this situation.

Thought about this and gave up a 2017 1st (not mine, will be shocked if it's not a late 1st) for Murray. Gotta hope the Raiders don't draft a RB but my gut tells me they like what they have and won't use a pick on RB with so many other needs.

I like that move for you. Improve your team now, and worry about 2017 . . . in 2017.

It's a vote of confidence because they didn't sign someone good like DeMarco Murray. Bringing in Trent Richardson to compete is about the same as bringing in Furley to compete.

I don't think anyone knows how strongly the Raiders were going after DeMarco. I understand that they couldn't outbid Miami for Suh but I think they could have beat Philly's offer to DeMarco if they really wanted to.

It's been reported that they did offer more guaranteed money than Philly did, but Murray chose Philly.

ETA:

A source told the Philadelphia Inquirer the Raiders offered DeMarco Murray significantly more guaranteed money than the Eagles.
Murray gave the Eagles a discount so he could play in Chip Kelly's scheme, stick it to the Cowboys twice a year and avoid the annual train wreck that is the Raiders. He probably did Oakland GM Reggie McKenzie a favor. The Raiders should be building through youth, with exciting running back Latavius Murray a major part of that. Mar 24 - 9:56 AM

Rotoworld:

ESPN Raiders reporter Bill Williamson expects Latavius Murray to beat out Trent Richardson for the starting running back job.
Williamson said, "I just don’t think Richardson is a starting running back in the NFL." We could not have said it better. There is still a chance the Raiders add a back via the draft, but Murray should run away with the job if Richardson is his only competition. Murray rushed 82 times for 424 yards and two touchdowns last season.

Why do people keep saying things like this? They signed Trent Richardson not Adrian Peterson.

The may or may not have been truly interested in DeMarco Murray, but reporters printing whatever shred of a modicum of info they find from what are very likely unverified sources during one of the few interesting points of the relentless 24/7/365 news cycle isn't really convincing evidence that they were dying to get the guy. And it certainly isn't an indication that they don't like Murray.

They will like him plenty after camp and seeing him against the second worst running back in history trent richarson.....lol in fact they will love him

This dude's value dodged a lot of bullets over the last couple of months. No big free agent signing and no rookie to compete with. Do you bump his dynasty value up at this point?
