RB Leonard Fournette, FA (1 Viewer)

NFL Media draft analyst Chad Reuter believes that LSU RB Leonard Fournette's showing at the NFL Scouting Combine will be crucial for his draft stock.
"Scouts need to see him at full speed in Indianapolis," Reuter writes. "His medical exams are also important, as team doctors will want to see how his ankle has healed." That nagging ankle injury prevented the 6-foot-1, 230-pounder from appearing in five games this past season. As Reuter notes, he toted the rock 20 or more times in just two contests. Due to the injury concern, Fournette saw his workload drop from 300 carries in 2015 to a mere 129 in 2016.

That is great news. I was wondering why he seemed to be less explosive than previous years, but this shows that teams went above and beyond just to stop him. They won't be able to do that in the NFL without risking being torn apart by WRs and TEs (on most teams). I worry that in Carolina the defenses can stack the box and that he won't perform as well as somewhere else.

As a Packer fan, is Fournette your most desired RB? What about McCaffrey or Cook? I'm a Bear fan but not very high on Fournette so just curious. 

 
I thought Cook would go 1.1 too, but the more buzz about the off field issues, and the more concerns team show during combine, I think the less likely that is.

And he got very strong reviews for his work in drills, for his work in receiving.

Talk about a big rebound from his poor vertical.

Still find it odd and would like to know why Fournette was quoted as saying he was 227 in mid January and trying to lose two more pounds and showed up at 240 instead.

 
Catching the ball really well in drills. Looks very good, that could help him big time. People have been comparing him to AP in that he's a 2-down thumper. But he doesn't have to be.

 
How often did LSU line up in the shotgun?  Is Fournette a good shotgun RB or a better fit for teams who have the QB under the center?

Someone posted the numbers earlier (don't remember where) that Fournette's YPC was somethlng like 2.5ypc lower when running out of the shotgun than it was from under center.

If Fournette can get between 40-50 catches a season then he's my obvious #1 pick. Peterson had season highs of 40 & 43 receptions so if Fournette can add a little to that I'm more than happy. The stories out of the combine that he looked natural catching the ball were positive.

Just because LSU does not throw to the RB's does not mean he can't do it.  When it comes to trying to scout these guys I try to focus on what they can do, since sometimes things we think they can't do they were never asked to do. He's got a great frame to pass blocking and he excelled in the drills yesterday and I thought showed improvement in that area in general over his career.

He's still not a lock for 1.1.

It's one thing to be a contrarian, which I appreciate. It's another thing to be stubborn and not willing to accept what is clearly apparent of Fournette's size, speed, talent and proven production.

What three guys do you have ahead of him? I know you previously mentioned McCaffrey may be your #1.

So with Cook somewhat bombing do we see Fournette's stock rising or falling as the 1.1? He did not separate from the pack himself.

I look at this as a 3 part process, what a player has done in college, where he is drafted, and combine results being a distant 3rd in this process.

Fournette tested like Derrick Henry- lite. Cook has the athletic profile of a practice team player. Mike Williams is big, but had a poor vertical and won't run. Corey Davis won't run. There are definite questions mark around 1st pick. I think it comes down to landing spot. What are the dream landing spot for Fournette? Carolina?

There's a stat that's been floating around that Fournette's YPC was a full 2ypc lower, and very average, when running out of the shotgun.  Carolina operates very heavily out of the shotgun.  Doesn't seem like a good fit.

I have seen and heard some of that. It's also been mentioned Fournette really prefers having a FB. Unfortunately for him, he is going to need to learn to run from the shotgun and without a FB. That's just the way the NFL has gone. Carolina made sense to me because he seems like a natural replacement for Stewart and could see a lot of RZ work as the team limits Cam's usage as a runner. What team would you like?

Yeah I am pretty sure the OC on the Panthers can figure out how to work with LF.  From a fantasy perspective him on the Panthers wouldnt be bad but Newton would still steal some of his td's but then again they would feed him the ball like an animal.  But then again so would all the other teams that draft him.  The local media is all over drafting either LF or Cook at 8.  I doubt he makes it that far after his combine

My only issue with Baltimore is how much they have been passing recently. Maybe it was partly due to a lack of faith in the RBs but it was kind of absurd how much they threw.

Is there info anyone has on breakdown of teams using shotgun or using a FB or zone run scheme, etc? Skins look like a perfect fit, but are they too shotgun/zone running oriented? I have no idea, just got that impression.

You have to look by each team separately so it's a pain in the neck if you want to look at every team, but ESPN has splits stats where they break down those things.  For example, here is a link to CAR's splits for rushing:  http://www.espn.com/nfl/team/splits/_/name/car/type/rushing

Here is BAL's: http://www.espn.com/nfl/team/splits/_/name/bal/type/rushing

Scroll down and under "By Offensive Formation" you will see Shotgun, 2 backs split, I-formation and lone setback for CAR.  Other teams will have it broken down by the formations they use.

Skins ran shotgun formation 93 times out of 434 rushing attempts. And I'm betting most of that was on 3rd down. 

 
If the Skins retain Cousins that would be a pretty perfect landing spot (imagine what Fournette could do there if Rob Kelley was able to plod to 4.2ypc and Matt Jones to 4.8ypc there).  Not sure I've seen a single mock with him still being on the board when they pick though.
