Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle rushed eight times for 38 yards and caught two passes for nine yards and one touchdown in Saturday’s preseason matchup against the Seahawks.
Dowdle was the Cowboys’ first running back on the field on Saturday and found the end zone on a six-yard pass from Cooper Rush. He averaged a solid 4.8 yards per carry on the evening, with his longest rush coming on a nine-yard scamper on the team’s first drive. Dowdle is looking more and more like the RB2 behind Tony Pollard and is a worthwhile stash in the later rounds of fantasy drafts.
I think the bigger questions to consider here:I like Dowdle to land the number 2 job, great complement to Pollard.

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy on RB Rico Dowdle: "I’ve been impressed with Rico since my first year. ... I love his running style. He runs angry. He pass protects with a lot of urgency; he sticks his nose in there. …I think we’re just seeing Rico finally healthy."
I've been fighting whether or not Dallas lets Dowdle operate as a true 1a should Pollard go down. I don't see it. I'd rather hold guys like K. Ingram, Kelley (obv now), J. Ford, etc.Strange game with the ST and defensive TD early. Dowdle came in on the first drive of the 2nd quarter and had runs for 10, 2 and no yards. Finished with 6 carries for 24 yards. Duece only played late when the game was over.
He's a tough runner with 3 down skills including blocking. Pretty athletic (8.59 RAS), but injuries have held him back both in college and the pros. He's had several good runs in his preseasons. Could he be a top RB if Pollard went down? Or maybe get more action anyway to keep Pollard fresh.

Rico Dowdle seems like a weapon for Dallas.
Rico is getting some action early in games, along with Duece. They need to give Pollard some breaks. Rico becomes 1A if Pollard misses time. He's more of a banger than Duece, but is also good as a receiver- checkout his college tape.Dart throw
I've got Pollard and really nervous I don't have Dowdle. I've been trying to trade for him, but the other guy wants an overpay, and beginning to think it might be worth it. Problem is I'm not deep enough to overpay. Just crossing my fingers on Pollards health, but not too confident for the whole season based on the RB devastation the past few weeks.I've been fighting whether or not Dallas lets Dowdle operate as a true 1a should Pollard go down. Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle is showing what he can do when healthy. He totaled seven touches for 46 yards, including this 9-yard catch in fourth quarter. Dowdle played 11 offensive snaps behind Tony Pollard's 70, two shy of Pollard's career high.
Same boat. Nobody else worth getting on the WW, and I desperately need some insurance, after losing Saquon for however long.I am picking him up as a Pollard handcuff as Pollard is my hero RB. Think he will produce well if Pollard goes down. Decent insurance I guess.
Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz reports Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle (ankle) is expected to play on Thanksgiving against the Commanders.
Dowdle was listed as questionable by the Cowboys with an ankle injury, but he is expected to play against the Commanders. He got in a limited practice on Wednesday after not practicing earlier in the week. Dowdle had tweaked his ankle on Saturday prior to the Cowboys’ Week 11 game, getting eight carries against the Panthers. He is the distant backup to Tony Pollard and ankle injury risk keeps Dowdle off the fantasy radar for Thanksgiving.
Cowboys agreed to terms with RB Rico Dowdle.
We’re less than a week into the new league year, but Dowdle’s return could prove important for fantasy purposes. While it’s possible the Cowboys will use an early pick on a running back in the draft, the free agent market has already seen its top players sign with new teams. Dowdle, who totaled 505 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns as Tony Pollard’s backup, could be asked to play a larger role in 2024. It’s too early to suggest Dowdle would be anything more than a fringe RB3/RB4 at this point, but his ability to work on early downs and passing downs would make him an interesting option late in drafts if the Cowboys don’t add any running backs of note.
Yes. If they sign Zeke, then no.Draft over and the Cowboys did nothing at RB...is Dowdle a legit candidate to start?
Agree, but it ain't like Zeke is at the top of his game.Yes. If they sign Zeke, then no.Draft over and the Cowboys did nothing at RB...is Dowdle a legit candidate to start?
He did not look good last yearDeuce Vaughn is the sneaky play here .. Especially now since they drafted his former o-lineman. Watch him breakout
I think Zeke will still be the sneaky play.Deuce Vaughn is the sneaky play here .. Especially now since they drafted his former o-lineman. Watch him breakout
It’s been a strange offseason for them.Cowboys are all in.![]()
arent they always all in?Cowboys are all in.![]()
Was a joke from a Jerry Jones interview. He stated they were all in and then did nothing in free agency. I love Jerry Jones interviews. He is very entertaining. I will miss him when he is gone.arent they always all in?Cowboys are all in.![]()
I'd imagine Zeke will be the goal line/ short yardage guy so think ceiling will be capped, still would have value as starter thoughHow high does he rise if he is the starter?
Also can see them trusting Zeke more on 3rd downI'd imagine Zeke will be the goal line/ short yardage guy so think ceiling will be capped, still would have value as starter thoughHow high does he rise if he is the starter?
Agree.I’ve probably got cognitive dissonance (I might have made a huge mistake letting Zeke go in dynasty), but the fact that he went for five bucks in offseason free agency bidding lets one know what people thought of his performance last year (that’s no more than 2.5% of the first-place teams’ budget, and is much less than that for teams that finished lower). I don’t see—other than Dowdle’s injury history—how Dowdle isn’t the starter in three or four weeks. That is unless Dallas has thrown in the towel on the season (for whatever reason) and they stick with Zeke for old time’s sake. You could probably sign some guys not playing that would give Zeke a run for his money right now. I’ll admit that Zeke plays the ins and outs of the position so well and is constantly picking up yards when walled off, but that first step is killing him, and I don’t see it getting better.
Agree.
Dowdle one of my favorite late round flyers.
The end could come abruptly for Zeke.
Not sure how the old man feels about Zeke now that he already cast him aside once and is not paying him that much now. But yeah, you can’t rule that subplot out. The main question I have is how good Dowdle is in pass pro, given that is his biggest asset at this point. I think Dowdle could acquit himself nicely at the goal line.Agree.

Thanks. I think you are correct about the late-round flyer comment. I feel the same way. Jerruh looms large, however.
My thought is that if this is redraft, caveat emptor with counting on Dowdle or over-drafting him. If he hasn’t beat Zeke out yet, I don’t see anything so incredibly special about Dowdle (he’s pretty good, IMO) that it would prevent Dallas from signing somebody and giving that other person run for a bit. Just a caution. Like with all these guys, really.
Beating out Zeke and being named the starter seem like unrelated conditions. Jerry wants to make money first and foremost and Zeke in the starting lineup puts a few more butts in the seats, and jerseys on backs than Dowdle as the starter. They haven't signed a veteran yet so it seems like they are willing to run with what they have. Not sure how the old man feels about Zeke now that he already cast him aside once and is not paying him that much now.
