RB Rico Dowdle, CAR (2 Viewers)

@32BeatWriters
“With more than a handful of starters held out of the preseason opener, running back Rico Dowdle showed burst and explosiveness in his only series of the game. He gained 14 yards on three carries averaging 4.7 yards per touch. His most impressive feat may have been his willingness to pick up the blitz giving quarterback Cooper Rush enough time to find wideout Jalen Brooks for the Cowboys largest gain of the day.”

He's a great target if you decide to go zero RB. Coaching staff seems to really like him but were obligated to bring in a veteran.

You just can't go into your season with Rico Dowdle as your starting RB, lol. He averaged 4.1 YPC last year and Tony Pollard averaged 4.0 YPC.

Doesn't seem like there would be any real difference between those two guys. As for Ezekiel Elliot, he hasn't averaged over 4 YPC since 2021. 3.5 YPC and 3.8 YPC last two years.

He's just as good as post injury Pollard and Ezekiel Elliot wishes he was this guy. At 5 ft 11 and 213 lbs, he's actually one of the bigger RBs in the league. I don't see any reason he couldn't do exactly what Tony Pollard did last year if the Cowboys decide that's what they want to do.

From a bird's eye view, he actually looked better than Pollard at times last year. Whether that can be sustained over a lengthy time period remains to be seen, but beating out a long-in-the-tooth Zeke is not a big obstacle.

I think the Cowboys are one of the most-likely Teams to add pre-Season Roster cut RB's to their RB room, and they are going to carry a committee approach to their running game, all Season.

I'm looking for a 'name' Player to be added to Zeke/Dowdle in the coming weeks, and having nothing to do with any of the group.

Worthwhile redraft fantasy assets from the Cowboys, IMHO are a short list: Dak, Lamb, Cooks. All others are compromised from high enough ceilings to be worthy of rostering at this time.

Dallas should inquire about Elijah Mitchell, Jamaal Williams, Miles Sanders, Khalil Herbert. All would likely be better than Dowdle, and potentially available for modest compensation. Maybe call Denver about Javonte, or the Steelers about Najee.

I wouldn't waste the draft capital on Najee or Javonte, Jamal Williams is on the same level as Zeke right now, I don't think Carolina wants to get rid of Sanders right now, with both Chubba and Brooks nursing injuries.

I like the idea of contacting the 49ers, they seem to have a lot of back, I also like the idea of Herbert, the Dolphins might part with Jeff Wilson as well.

I am a life long Dallas hater and I just took him in the 12th round of a PPR best ball redraft over rookies Corum, Wright, Llyod. If he can't beat out 57 year old Ewok/Elliot he needs to find another sport to play ;)
I think he will be the starter, he just won’t be in on third downs nor on the goal line.

This is probably correct. Avg DAL RB game:
Dowdle 60 rush yds, 1 rec, 10 rec yds. 0.25 TD
Zeke 20 rush yds, 3 rec, 20 rec yds. 0.75 TD,
Others 10 rush yds, 1 rec, 5 rec yds. 0.01 TD

Jon Machota
Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle on this being his best opportunity to play a lot: “I think so for sure, with the way things have went out there, practice and things like that. I think I definitely should get a bigger role this year. And I’m looking forward to it.”

On being a complete back: “The more you can do, the better. When you can catch out of the backfield, run routes and also run the ball well, it’s hard to take you off the field. I want to be a three-down back.”

Any extra motivation with the Cowboys signing Dalvin Cook? “It’s not any extra motivation. I have two kids. That’s all the motivation I need. It’s nice having a guy like Dalvin come in. Zeke and (Cook) have been to the Pro Bowl. A lot of experience with those guys. Just take it all in and just go out there and continue to do what I do.”

On the RB-by-committee approach: “It’s just one guy is not going out there being on an 8-play drive, staying 8 plays in a row or something like that. It’s kinda flipping it 4 and 4, having a third guy come in. Just making sure we have fresh legs on the field at all times.”

Mike McCarthy talking about RB Rico Dowdle:

“He’s a complete running back, plays all three downs. I think his pass protection from his rookie year to now has become one of his best assets.”

- Dowdle the runner ✅
- Dowdle the blocker ✅

Nobody paying attention to the lead back for a good team. People sniffing around his 3rd backup. It's just odd.

I agree. I think they are obsessed with the names on the back of the jersey of those backups. The problem is, they have moth balls on them.

I haven't seen anyone "obsessed" with Cook while ignoring Dowdle. More like people adding him to the end of their bench to see how it plays out.

A ton of the FF personalities on Twitter are super extreme on him. A lot of guys saying how bad the talent is and how going after low talent guys with volume gets you Alexander Mattison, Mike Davis, etc.

You weren't getting those guys in the double digit rounds. Any volume in round 12 is a gift.

I agree with this. Having drafted Mike Davis previously and lived it. Dowdle is a FA for some reason in my ten team. Dropping Caleb for him (who’s backup up Richardson) is obviously the move right? Two qb’s in a short bench ten team is still stupid innit?

For me, no question, Rico is the best back of this average rb room. That's not the question. The question is would I rather have Rico in the 10th or 11th or Dalvin with my last pick? No one really knows how this will pan out so give me Dalvin with my last pick. Or off waivers.

No one knows anything, we're all making educated guesses.

Dowdle has been there the whole time. The coaches are still speaking highly of him and his role.
I think Dalvin was a depth addition and is no longer anywhere near what he once was.

I'd rather invest a dollar in Dowlde than a penny in Cook.

U kinda made at least my point, which is also my opinion. Put this in context with your comment. Say. 20 dollar budget. I'd rather spend a penny on Cook then a dollar on Rico. Ha ha. Kinda makes fantasy football fun, that we all kinda look at things differently. Once again, in my opinion, Rico > Dalvin. Hell, Rico > Zeke for me.

10. DALLAS COWBOYS - PFF

(13th by FBGs)

Although the Cowboys' offensive line had been among the five best units in the league for years, that position is in jeopardy going forward. The Cowboys let left tackle Tyron Smith and center Tyler Biadasz walk in free agency, and now rookie left tackle Tyler Guyton is set to replace Smith while Brock Hoffman is expected to play center.

It did not help Dallas that right tackle Terence Steele had a disappointing 2023 season coming back from injury. The team still has one of the better guard duos in Tyler Smith and Zack Martin, but it is unknown how much quality is around them.

"The expectation going into camp was that Rico Dowdle would be in position to have a larger role with Tony Pollard leaving in free agency. Not sure how the carries would work out, but Dowdle would be somewhere in the mix with Ezekiel Elliott. Well, the fifth-year back looked to make the most of his opportunities in Oxnard, Calif. He was Dallas’ most explosive back and showcased an ability in the passing game to be a complete back."

Man, taking Jerome Ford and Rico late in my draft a few weeks back is starting to look preeeetay good. I'm sure I'll eat some crow on at least one of these guys but at least I have that preseason hope lol

Just traded my last draft pick for Rico who was someone elses last draft pick. Last year I took Mostert in the 14th round and that panned out nice. Hoping this dude comes out of nowhere and surprises everyone. If their O line sucks I see a lot of dump offs and Rico can handle that. LFG

Got them both last night (along with Chubba).

Love taking shots at these types late in the draft. If I can hit on one of them I've got an RB3.

Hoping lightning strikes again like last year (with Mostert and Kyren).

The Coachspeak Index
Rico Dowdle’s rushing yards total (36.5) has jumped 50% since today’s report he’ll split carries w/ Zeke

Coachspeak Index followers have known for months this would be the case

I highlighted Dowdle higher than 24.5 rushing yards on the podcast earlier this week

Such a big game for this kid. Cook was left on practice squad this week so his contract wouldn't be guaranteed. Today's game determines if he stays on it. I think Rico gets a shot here to prove himself. Once again, such a big game for him.

Not the game Rico owners were wanting. About as good a game as Zele owners were expecting. The perfect game for Cook owners I guess. RB room is still a mess.

Anyone optimistic about Rico's fortunes going forward? Or is this like last season's underwhelming Pollard role, but with a lesser athlete in that spot?

Rico owner here in one league. Here's the problem, Zeke looked good. Zeke looked like a legitimate NFL runningback.

You'll never know when to start Rico and if you drop him, Zeke will suddenly start missing games. I'm leaning towards dropping him.

Maybe an overreaction but Zeke looked borderline explosive. He hurdled over a guy!

i also noticed Zeke had a pep in his step. twice during last week's game i asked my buddies who was that running, that can't be zeke! I thought it was odd during preseason that the analysts were calling Rico the best RB on the field, yet the 'Boys didn't budge from their Zeke stance. i think we're seeing why. the durability question may be the only thing that can save Rico's season.

The preseason takes about the Dallas backfield didn’t match what my eyeballs told me at all in week one. Zeke looked like he found the fountain of youth, for sure.

It’s funny to me because Zeke is still on the wire in a pretty competitive league of mine. It’s like nobody believes what they saw. And nobody beleives he’ll do it again.

Perhaps I should start believing what I saw and dump one of my lottery RBs for him. Though I have a pretty strong set of three running backs and I don’t think I’d start him. He’s definitely worth more than a running back who’s not currently getting many touches unless injury occurs.

Zeke looked OK, but I think it was because the bar is set pretty low. 10/40 isn't that exciting unless you get extra points for hurdling defenders. The TD helped of course.

Dowdle seems to have a clear path to the starting job, does he have the goods if he gets it? With Zeke and Dalvin Cook(ed), there isn't much competition.

Was just about to trade him away.

In a high O/U game against DET, he could be a start even against that tough run D.
