RB Saquon Barkley, PHI (2 Viewers)

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Saquon Barkley (ankle) is “week to week.”
Barkley, by all accounts, avoided a serious ankle injury against Arizona in Week 2, but has almost no shot of suiting up Thursday night against the 49ers. Rapoport said Barkley could miss the team’s Week 4 game before returning to the lineup for Week 5. In the meantime, Matt Breida and Gary Brightwell will likely share backfield duties. Breida makes for a decent flex option in 12-team formats.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Saquon Barkley (ankle) has “a shot” at playing in Week 4 against the Seahawks.

The Giants play on Monday in Week 4, giving Barkley an extra day of rest before potentially suiting up. After reports initially downplayed the nature of Barkley’s ankle issue, Barkley himself eventually confirmed that he was dealing with a high-ankle sprain prior to the Giants’ Thursday game against the 49ers. Though Barkley may have a chance at returning for Week 4, it would be surprising to see the Giants rush him back that quickly. Barkley has labored through injuries in previous seasons and the results weren’t pretty. For now, Matt Breida remains the start in the New York backfield.

Giants RB Saquon Barkley (ankle) is “in the day-to-day category” according to head coach Brian Daboll.
While Barkley didn’t do a lot at practice on Tuesday, the Giants just had a walk through. Afterwards, Daboll was asked about Barkley’s status and said, “He’s really now, I’d say, in the day-to-day category. Feels a lot better today. But we’ll kind of take that all the way throughout the week and see how he improves.” Obviously, Barkley feeling better is a good sign, but there is still a ways to go before he gets back out on the field on Monday night against Seattle. With the Giants sitting at 1-2, they may be inclined to play their star if he’s close, so this is certainly a situation to monitor closely over the next few days.

The guy is a machine if he gets back out there.

If this is coach speak. So be it.

But if he starts getting in some practices this week maybe there’s some fire to this smoke.

I picked up Breida last week and didn’t start him (4 carries and a TD!). Who outscored my other two starting running backs. So if he is close at least it gives me an option to wait and see and PRAY for a Breida TD if he can’t go.

I do think it's coach speak, as day-to-day could mean anything. With a HAS, I doubt Barkley will be out there next Monday. Even if he is, I imagine it will come down to a game-time decision and we fantasy owners can't risk it with a MNF game.

Agree with you completely. Hoping he sits cause I don't have another option on Monday night and don't want him to go off on my bench

My backup option is Javonte, who's playing on Sunday afternoon (and has a great matchup). Hopefully we'll get more definitive news before then, but based on what I know now, I'm inclined to sit Saquon regardless. Even if he does play, he could be limited; guys coming off of HASs usually don't look right for a couple weeks. And of course there's the nightmare scenario where I leave him in my lineup and we find out Monday that he's out. If that happened, I'd probably have to start a Giants WR🤮

There are Giants WRs? I thought that was a myth like bigfoot/Loch Ness. Do you have any tangible evidence these things exist?
Sorry, you weren't able to see that I was doing air quotes as I typed.

In any event, I realized that I would have to start Saquon at RB, so I couldn't even sub in a "WR" (both Brieda and Charbonnet are already rostered in that league). Basically, unless Brian Daboll shows up at my house and personally promises me that Saquon is playing and will get a full workload, I think I have to sit him

Plus there's always the chance they limit him first game back or he tweaks the ankle during the game.

Have there been any practice reports? Or are we all just hanging on to Daboll’s “day to day” comment?

If he’s playing I’m starting him.
The Giants play on MNF. If he is a GTD, how many fantasy owners will be available to pivot to someone else if it looks like he can't go?

Only pivots would be to Breida or if you have Barkley in your flex then you can put a wr in his place. I have none of those options so plan on sitting Barkley

This is a huge mistake I still see even veteran fantasy players make. Players in Sunday/Monday night games should be going in your flex so you have more mobility with last minute changeouts. Very good point.

Giants HC Brian Daboll said Saquon Barkley (ankle) will practice on Thursday.
With the Giants not playing until Monday night, Thursday marks the team’s first practice of the week. Barkley will presumably practice in a limited capacity, as the team looks to evaluate his status ahead of Week 4’s matchup against the Seahawks. We may not know more on his official status until closer to game day, so these practices will be something to monitor throughout the week. If Barkley is unable to go, Matt Breida could have some deep flex appeal, but it’s worth noting he had only seven touches in Week 3.

Its individual drills don't forget to mention that ^

He is on my bench until he logs a full practice, period.
Yeah, "limited practice" and "individu"al drills" will definitely not be enough for me to start him with confidence. If we don't get something more concrete by Sunday morning, I'm benching him

Yeah, because my rbs are a cesspool right now I'm starting Breida if Barkley doesn't play. I'm obviously hoping for Barkley, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Him and Ekeler sure showed the league RBs should get paid more on long-term deals, by getting hurt immediately.

D'OH!
It’s the NFL players at all positions get hurt all the time.

Laremy Tunsil, Andrew Thomas, and David Bakhtiari are all top LT’s who are currently injured. Should the NFL stop signing LTs to big money long term deals too?

No, but you see RBs don't get paid the big money. That's why it's funny. It was a joke.

It's funny because they both asked for long-term deals, got rejected due to the position getting hurt and ineffective. Then, they both got hurt proving the front office were right not to pay them.

Had they stayed healthy they would have an argument. But both players who held out, got hurt, ruining their leverage.

OTs get paid. RBs don't. Both get hurt. Sucks to be a RB. That's the joke. An OT can get hurt and still make bank, a RB gets hurt and he's never seeing any type of substantial long-term deal.

Saquon Barkley (ankle) practiced Wednesday.
Barkley was seen running and cutting two weeks after sustaining a high ankle sprain that the team originally downplayed as a non-serious injury. He could return for the Giants’ Week 5 game against the Dolphins. At this point, in what is likely a lost season for the Giants, there’s no point in rushing Barkley back onto the field. None of the other New York backs are fantasy viable if Barkley remains sidelined this week.

Do the giants look like Doo Doo? I’d personally say, Yes.

Is 1-3 a “lost season”? I’d personally say, No.

Did the game they won happen because Barkely put the team on his back? I’d personally say, Yes.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll said Saquon Barkley (ankle) could be a game-time decision for Week 5 against the Dolphins.

Barkley, working his way back from a high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 2 against Arizona, has been limited in practice this week. There’s no guarantee Barkley would function as the team’s workhorse back if he’s able to suit up Sunday against the Dolphins, but he should be in all fantasy lineups. Miami’s vulnerable rush defense could provide a much-needed good matchup for Barkley and the Giants offense.

Doesn’t sound like he’ll have a full load even if he’s active. I pretty much have to bench him because it’s between him and Etienne (early London game) so I’m glad the decision is made for me.

As someone who is facing the owner of Barkely and Breida I hope he plays, but on a snap count. Would screw up both plays.

I was just offered Barkley for BHall. Saquan injury (and history) scares me even though on the surface this looks like a good trade.
Plus, the NYG (offensive) line is porous...

I wouldn't do it, Kee. There's a reasonable chance that Barkley won't be 100% even when he returns and that team is even more of a mess than the Jets. Breece is rounding into form and they are going to ride him now that he seems to be very close to 100%.
