I see it from both angles but perhaps the questions surrounding the Cardinals are getting too much weight. I’m very nervous about DJ this season but should he be ranked lower than a rookie who has yet to play in an NFL game? Probably not.

I find it shocking folks would take Johnson over Barkley. 5 year age difference is massive

Regardless of the reason, he missed 15+ games last season.  I don't subscribe to this theory, but I can understand the reticence to take a player that high when they missed essentially the entire season.

I think he could have come back but they held him out at the end of the season because they had no chance at the playoffs. I guess you can say he's "rusty" but I'm not sure that really matters once training camp hits.

 
A couple of comments on the state of the OL play so far in camp:

7. Nate Solder hasn't exactly looked like the dominant LT he was over the final 8 games of the 2017 season with NEP. It's camp, I'm not going to overreact on OL play, but Vernon has got the best of him more times than I would like to have seen. Entire OL getting used to Bettcher.

8. Ereck Flowers is going to need some help from a schematic standpoint. He has still struggled in one-on-one situations in pass pro. Effort level is def. way up though for him which was an issue at times in 2017. He's still the best option at RT, by far, currently on the roster.

6. Jon Halapio is starting to come into his own at the center position. He still needs to get up to par with Brett Jones from a mental standpoint, but I think that's why he's taking all 1st-team reps. Big, physical man. His key block today sprung a gaping hole for Saquon Barkley.

All from Dan Schneier (@DanSchneierNFL) on Twitter. Some of this could be that it's camp, and James Bettcher is throwing entirely new looks at the offense so the OL just might just need some time to gel and react to a very clearly aggressive defensive style...

12. James Bettcher really, really likes to attack. Every play has more than 5 defenders on the LOS, usually sending at least 5, multiple all-out blitzes, tons of A gap blitzing, weakside ILB Alec Ogletree running loop blitzes, Landon Collins firing down the LOS. #GiantsCamp

19. Saquon Barkley hasn't made too many flashy plays but more important he hasn't made any mistakes. Hasn't dropped a pass despite many targets. Has caught red zone TDs, picked up a screaming blitzer (Landon) with perfect tech. on the long Shep TD, has lined up all over at WR.

And a comment about Barkley directly. It's all sounding good for him so far.

 
Giants RB Saquon Barkley rushed 4 times for 43 yards in Thursday’s preseason game versus the Browns.

Selected with the second pick of this year’s draft, Barkley wasted no time showing off his athleticism. His first NFL touch was a 39-yard jaunt in which he reversed field, gave the impression he was going to break all the way to the right side and then made a jump cut upfield, buckling fellow first-round rookie Denzel Ward in the hole as he outraced defenders down the sideline before being forced out of bounds. He carried three more times for just four yards, but Barkley flashed his immense upside on his two drives. Barkley will look to be the Giants first 1,000-yard rusher since Ahmad Bradshaw in 2012.

Giants fan in my dynasty league who has the second pick in every round offered me all his picks for the 1.1.

Just can’t do it this year.

RB Saquon Barkley left practice early after stretching out for a long reception. His left leg was wrapped the remainder of practice. Coach Shurmur said this afternoon after Barkley had been examined, “Saquon has a mild strain, and we’ll be smart with him as we move along here.”

 
Someone wake me up when the Giants prove they have an o-line.  S-quads is the real deal but that doesn’t matter in the nfl if the line is moving the wrong way.  

Lol at taking him over DJ in redraft too btw.  

Have you guys watched the Giants in the last 5 years?

If you are drafted based on what happened last year, or even more the last 5 years, you will be always be missing the boat.

Changes from just last year:
The Giants have three new starters on the offensive line
The Giants have an entirely new coaching staff
The Giants have Barkley

Now I'm not advocating taking him over DJ in redraft, in fact I just took DJ at #3 in redraft, your logic why you shouldn't seems flawed.

Have you seen David Johnson's o-line?  Not saying Saquon>>>DJ in redraft or anything but the Cardinals do not look like a very good team this season either.

Actually, changing up 3/5 of the starting line in of and itself does mean something. It mean that the front office realized the o-line is a problem and they addressed it.  Now, one could argue that the changes might not work but I don't see how signing the best LT in free agency and drafting one the top guards in the draft won't make them better.

Beyond that, Barkley is the type of RB that can make his own hay plus having a top pass catching RB should soften up the pass rush.

At the end of the day, you could be right that the result isn't any better but your logic that the offense line has been bad in the past and they didn't look good in week 1 of pre-season seems to be flawed.

Quite likely about as many as Barkley’s prime, given the different life expectancies of RB vs. WR.

 Not so many with Ben, though, which is the worry.  I’d still take AB in most cases thouh.

interesting. I dont think I would due to Brown and Ben's ages. 

I think Barkley could have a career in length similar to other generational backs like Faulk, Tomlinson, etc. which is more than the 3 or 4 more years of dominance I would expect from Brown

By your logic Gurley owners should be selling asap while they can

Gurley owners should absolutely be selling asap while they can...  Assuming you an get Hopkins or Beckham or a player with about 6 or 7 years of elite production on the horizon.  I think it's a commonly held strategy to store your value in WR rather than RB in dynasty.  The past year seems to have changed that, but I'm always shocked how short people's memories are. 

Barkley is an elite talent but doesn't appear to be in a great situation, though there is a lot new with that situation and the jury is still out. 

My problem with Barkley is that he has about zero chance of outperforming his dynasty or redraft ADP.  All the upside is priced in already...  He hasn't shown he can stay healthy yet, and as we saw with Gurley 2016 and Gurley 2017 the offense you're in means quite a bit for an RB.

I agree with what you said above about storing your value in WR. However, I find it completely odd to do all but label Barkley as injury prone by saying "he hasn't shown he can stay healthy." IMO he hasnt shown he cant stay healthy either. so he got a little banged up in preaeason...  I think that's more NY being cautious, especially after Guice, rather than him being injury prone.

Barkleys upside is prime Marshall Faulk, so yes there is room to go up still

 
Saquon Barkley (hamstring) participated in 7-on-7 drills during Monday's practice.

Barkley reportedly looked healthy, cooking LB Ray-Ray Armstrong on a wheel route. The No. 2 overall pick has said he will be ready for Week 1, and he certainly seems on track. Barkley is safe to select in the first round of fantasy drafts.
