RB Sony Michel (1 Viewer)

It's too early to prognosticate what Michel will do.  He obviously has more talent than Burkhead, but that doesn't mean he will explode on the scene right away.  If BB is the genius we all think he is, then he will utilize Michel they way he should and that will mean at the expense of Burkhead eventually.

ETA:  By the way I think Michel will have a breakout game this weekend.

I totally agree!!! I’m benching L.Miller for him.

Michel could some day be a very good back, but he is still raw and inexperienced (with what could be a long term knee problem). White has a role that he does very well. I doubt they change his usage much. Burkhead has a role that in his time in NE has done pretty well. I doubt they change his usage that much either.
Sounds reasonable for this year, but given the 1st round pedigree, I’d be surprised if the team didn’t have a bigger role in mind for next year and beyond.

The other thing I forgot to mention is a lot will depend on the NE defense in terms of what the offense can do. If the defense looks like it did in the SB or against the Jags, the offense will have to score a ton of points and most likely would have to pass a lot.

Maybe in future years Michel can turn into a multi route receiving threat, but if the defense being porous is a common occurance, I think that helps White and Burkhead more than it helps Michel. And there are plenty of people who think the Pats defense is extremely suspect.

Based on his Useage so far it looks like he is entrenched into the Dion Lewis role.....

will be interesting to see who is in there once they get near the Goal line

In the first half when he was in they knew it was a run.  To predictable. Now they will mix it up and keep him in

Tried to buy him before the game thinking this was his coming out party. I still think he will pay off but it may take a few games.

I thought Michel was supposed to have good hands?  He's dropped every pass I've seen thrown to him in preseason and tonight.

Never seen so many people so high on a guy as a receiver who had 9 catches last year.

I think he's going to be fine. Once Gordon gets out there and Edelman comes back the offense will open up and there will be room to run.

For those that don't already know,  welcome to the bermuda triangle of rb stables.  Once in a while you might get dillons year or blount on a hot team.  But its beyond unpredictable and i think mcdaniels prides himself and his ego by changing rbs roles and usage constantly.  And god forbid someone fumbles.

He may turn out to be the back in ne but who knows?

I wouldn’t call him a bust after one game with significant touches but it wasn’t encouraging outside of his usage.
Agreed - it should be taken in context that last night was basically week 2 of preseason for Michel and the entire Pats offense - Brady included - looked like garbage.

Seemed strange that they kept using Michel when he really wasn't looking great and they were down a few scores. I was expecting White to do his thing after half time.

Watched the game.  The entire offense looked awful.  I thought they were going to be okay with Gronk taking coverage but losing Cooks is hurting them more than I realized.  Nobody respects Dorsett.  Hogan is a possession receiver.  Right in line with why the front office jumped on J. Gordon.  I think when Gordon is active he gives them that field stretcher but he can also win jump balls.  Edelman is going to be a target hog.  Stay the course.  Michel will get his.  This is basically his 2nd preseason game.

I agree. I think Gordon becomes active next week to a limited playbook, and then Edelman opens everything up underneath. There will be running lanes for this guy, and his 14-50 line will look more like 14-80-1 when it's all said and done.

After reading the thread and watching the game, I offer my brief assessment: He's a better runner between the tackles than White, a more complete back, but he didn't catch the ball and White scored on a modified wheel route for the Pats' score to bring the score back closer to a tie (I forget the actual score). It's a RBBC right now, though Michel, if he catches the ball, has a chance to stick as lead back.

One more thing to note that points to the offensive struggles.  NE has always produced top 10 RBs because their offense consistently gets into the redzone.  It will get better and when they need that goal line carry Michel is the guy.  I think Michel is a buy low right now.

Also watch news of Burkhead’s neck injury. That could clearly have ramifications for playing time going forward.

ETA: one thing for sure is that he needs to focus better when catching the ball or he’ll get no receptions

Just one of those stinkers. Sony wasn't great but his usage is promising moving forward. Two home games coming up for them which could be very tasty...

vs Mia

vs Ind

I expect NE to crush these two teams.  The entire team is pissed off.  Evil Bill came out during the press confo last night.

Somewhat valid point but he was in the 20's the previous two seasons which indicates his pass catching was heavily scheme dependent. While 20's may not seem like a massive number even the elite NFL pass catching RB's were hitting high numbers in the 30's and low 40's in college and typically only 1-2 seasons. James White caught 11, 15 and 8 passes his first three years in college and was getting solid playing time and then goes over 30 his final season. Todd Gurley at the same school had one year out of 3 he was asked to be a heavily involved pass catcher, catching 37 in 10 games but that year was sandwiched between two seasons where he had 28 catches in 20 games. Usage of RB's in passing game in college is heavily scheme dependent.

But of course not catching a lot of passes does not mean you can. This is where the eye test comes and while he never displayed ability to line up all over like Kamara or run a route like he can he certainly looked more then capable when asked.

On my end I saw a dangerous player in space who possesses proficient pass blocking and that gave him a skill set conducive to carving out a nice role in the passing game. While I don't have a leg to stand on right now with how he's actually playing,  I still believe this to be true.

I'll have to look at his college highlights again but according to my eye test so far in the NFL he's looked more like a guy with stone hands than someone who just isn't focusing.

Maybe but fair to point out that's exactly what people were saying last week after the Jags dealt on them. And reason people were saying this is because that's what NE has historically done during their run, come back with a vengeance after they look like crap. Right now, especially until/if Edelman and Gordon start impacting games,  they don't appear to have the talent of years past to turn it on teams.

Michel didn't do anything, but as I mentioned previously in this thread I'm not surprised that Burkhead got injured.

While I don't claim to be able to predict injury, his history is getting hard to ignore.  Good player, but couldn't believe he was being drafted in the 6th-7th round in a lot of drafts.

To be fair: Tom Brady 14/26 for 133 yards, 1TD, 1INT

The New England offense got dominated by the Detroit defense in this game. I think the upcoming Mia and Ind games will be more revealing. I expect New England to dominate those two teams. If Michel doesn't do well in the next two weeks, I think it'll reveal more than last night's game did.

Several calling for an immediate turnaround....I'm more about hoping to salvage 3 of the first 6 games before the Deathstar becomes operational.

Dominate Miami ... based on history ? Don’t look like it to me

The Pats playing Miami AT HOME with Brady have been pretty much money. With TB12 in meaningful games at home they have gone 14-0 with an average margin of victory of 16 points. MIA did win in NE in a meaningless Week 17 game when Brady came out after one or two possessions. Playing IN MIAMI is a completely different story.

Quick....what was their record coming off a double digit loss......and what happened last night?

Injuries have an impact and they are meaningful.  NE has had to go through it with their offense and defense and it directly correlates with how they have played.  The Lions were pretty healthy in week 3.  However, Miami won't be in week 4:

"Dolphins DE Andre Branch is out indefinitely with a knee injury.

Branch is a low-impact player, but his loss combined with William Hayes' ACL tear severely strips Miami's previously-impressive defensive line depth. Hayes was off to a hot start with two sacks while playing strong run defense. Pro Football Focus credited Branch with four quarterback hurries in the first two games."

Sony is all set to be the lead dog.  Sucks for Rex, poor guy can't stay on the field.

For Sony owners, is Kenjon Barner worth a stash? Or do we think the pats hit free agency to shore up the backfield?
I wouldn't trust Barner. If Michel goes down they'll be looking outside for help. And...don't forget about Leveon Bell....But for now and hopefully the rest of the season it's time to watch the Sony show.
