He's an exciting player. From a pure entertainment perspective, it would be nice if he does turn it around. It could be a boost to the pretty deep receiving group in Minnesota if they can get him on the field enough to distract the defense. Bridgewater's numbers could definitely take a decent bump this year.

Anyone else looking to pick this guy up in dynasty? All signs point to him working hard and improving his route running. The physical talent has always been there but the Vikings do not seem terribly interested in getting this guy on the field. Maybe he starts picking up some carries in the backfield with AP out. I am going to pluck him off the waiver wire and see what team takes a flyer on him this offseason. He is plenty young enough to still make an impact.

Have have been watching him wondering the same thing. One big game and things could change fast for him. Plus treadwell isn't lighting the world on fire

I am not so concerned about this year however with the right team signing him he could make an impact. If he makes a couple plays this year his value could rise.....which right now he is free in my league.

I don't think he gets much going this year, but crazier things have happened. I still find myself holding him in some deeper dynasty leagues in hopes that a change of scenery will do him some good. Even with a limited route tree, I still can't help but to wonder what Patterson could do if he was in a situation where touches were manufactured for him like what Tavon gets.

Patterson has improved this year although he still is barely getting any playing time with the offense.
Charles Johnson hasn't contributed much thus far. It wouldn't surprise me if Patterson gets a shot at the X WR position before Treadwell does, if they do decide to sit Johnson at some point.
He is a free agent after this season but it would not surprise me if the Vikings work out a new deal to retain him, even if nothing changes as far as Pattersons involvement with the offense, just because they value him as a kick returner. Also Patterson does seem to be happy with the team. Of course the bottom line will still be about money.

Johnson made some big plays in limited playing time last night. In our yardage bonus PPR league, he actually outscored Cordarrelle last night.
Agree with the last paragraph of the article. There's nothing to see here, it's just a wrinkle Zimmer/Turner added to give opponents one more thing to prepare for/think about.

I like them using him since normally he's only in on gadget plays. So they think the ball is going to him.
So when you motion him and the actually don't give him the ball, it opens up a lot of other things to your offense.
Also good for them giving him a few short passes, why the hell not? We know he's electric.

He went from barely seeing 5% of the snaps and a target a game to 50% of the snaps and 7 targets vs. NYG.
My thing is, do you really want to take a flier on the possible 3rd/4th receiving option in MIN's offense? This team will likely be bottom 5 in pass attempts per game all season.

Seems like a pretty risk free add. Definitely makes a good taxi squad player (if age eligible) as a stash for next season. Let him run fly patterns all day for Flacco, or a similar style QB/Offense.

While the running game improved significantly in the most recent game the Vikings have to rely on Bradford and the passing game to move the ball.
The defense will cause the offense to slow roll with a lead most of the time limiting total offensive plays, the Vikings are averaging 32 pass attempts per game which if that continues (I expect it will) means they will throw the ball over 500 times this season, which is significantly more than the 454 passing attempts from last season. I was expecting this to happen even with Bridgewater as the QB and Peterson healthy all season.
So while 32 per game is still below the average of 36 attempts per game across the league, it isn't as limiting as opportunities were last season when the Vikings averaged only 28 attempts per game.
eta - the most recent game was the first time the Vikings actually ran more offensive plays than their opponent.

I don't think we know this. Bottom 10, sure, most likely and that's where they sit now. They just had 36 attempts Sunday. As good as the defense is, it's bound to slip up now and then.

From what I saw Adam Theilen was playing the Z WR role and therefore Patterson's snaps largely were playing the X WR position, which was Johnson's job.
Jarius Wright played almost as much as Patterson did, mostly as the Z WR or slot. So the way I would view these changes is that Patteson has taken over Charles Johnson's role while Wright came in to help fill in for Diggs along with Theilen as the Z or slot WR.

How Patterson became part of Vikings offense again
The thing that is significant about Patterson's success as a gunner aside from making game changing plays, is that a gunner usually faces two defenders who can bump and run the gunner the entire play. So to beat this double team is similar to the skills needed to beat bump and run coverage.
In 2014 Patterson struggled a lot with beating press coverage. I have seen one example of him being stopped by press coverage in the game against the Giants. However his success as a gunner does show he has improved his technique to get a clean release into his routes.
Patterson is a very strong player compared to a lot of WR. So this helps him split the double team or press with power, even if they get good contact on him.

Has the time come to start seriously considering picking this guy up? He really burned me two years ago when I grabbed him as my WR2 after that great close to his rookie season. Not sure how much to trust with Diggs and Rudolph there.

I just dropped Pierre Garcon for him as my WR5-6 (with Coleman on the mend as well) - very low risk add and I like the trend, combined with coaching comments - not to mention the eye test, which he's been passing lately.
25 years old, it's way too early to consider what he did as a younger player getting burned by him - some receivers take time to adjust. 6'2", 220, fast - dude's a beast and I like the screens, and slants they're using him on. His athleticism can get a lot done after the catch.
He's definitely a great fit for Bradford's arm, and as an occasional deep threat there's also some home run potential.
Bonus in IDP leagues (like mine) in that I get .3/1 KR/PR + TDs. That's downright dancing pickle-worthy.

Those are great clips of him streaking down the field in punt coverage. Wow.
It's pretty rare to see gunners play prominent roles in offense but that might change here. Somehow that short pass game and screen he does so well could be a lifeline to Bradford. I'm really disappointed in Diggs, maybe defenses are just keying on him, but as far as CP is concerned as a practical matter the primary WR role seems open again. Snaps are up each of last 3 games and targets have been steady at 6-7. And I would think Chicago holds potential for a nice matchup and chance for a breakout game.

As you can see from SSND's post above, Pattersons snaps have been increasing with the offense and he has had 7 targets in the last 3 games for the Vikings.
For the majority of this season the Vikings have needed to pass to get first downs and keep the chains moving. While the Vikings have played great defense, and they have run the ball more than they have passed, they are only getting 2.6 yards per carry from the running game over 6 games thus far. The main problem is the offensive line not giving runners anything to work with on runs. I did see McKinnon have a could good runs against the Eagles, but he left the game with an injury. Matt Asiata can't make much out of nothing. The Vikings need to throw to get first downs.
I am not sure what is going on with Diggs, if he is still hurt but just playing through it, or if something else is going on. I hope he starts doing more soon, because this is two games now where he played a lot of snaps, but hasn't been playing as well since the injury. I still think Diggs is very good though and should continue to be the Vikings most used WR. Adam Theilen had a break out game when Diggs was out, that gives you an idea of the role for the Z WR in the offense right now.
Patterson has been moved around a lot. He plays some X but he has been getting some slot looks as well, especially in the red zone. His first TD this year was a out route from the slot with Theilen running a slant drag to pull the coverage away from the corner. Against the Eagles be scores on the post route I think from the slot as well. Patterson is strong and a bit bigger than Diggs or Theilen, so perhaps a more physical option in contested catch situations like this.
I still consider Diggs and Theilen ahead of Patterson and the snap counts indicate that as well, but Patterson is playing enough that he has earned this change and his role continues to expand in the offense.
I'm not sure if the Vikings can block good pass rushing teams enough for it to matter, and the Vikings will still try to win with defense and special teams, asking the offense to just not turn the ball over, but they are going to have to throw the ball.
Sam Bradford averages 33 passing attempts per game over his five games. Shaun Hill had 33 pass attempts in week one. Teddy Bridgewater attempted 28 per game on average in 2015. So without Peterson they are throwing the ball about 5 more times per game than last season.
Patterson gets an occasional rushing attempt as well.

The biggest issue I have seen with Diggs the last two games he's played has been Bradford not Diggs IMO. He overthrew him when he was wide open for a big play in the giants game. In the Philly game he completely muffed a throw in the redzone on a play designed for Diggs that would have been an easy TD as Diggs had a good 2-3 yards of separation. Sammy biscuits was purely aweful in Philly. Yes the O line was bad too but Sammy was not able to make easy throws and was looking for his check downs/safety valve(Rudolph) without really going through his reads even when he had time to throw.
CP has been productive inspite of this because they run a lot of designed WR screens/quick throws to him. They have made it a point to get him involved the past few games and he is definitely worth a pick up and stash.
They do have a very strong group of WR with Diggs, Theilan and CP but I fear their upside is going to be limited due to the Vikes offensive philosophy, Bradfords inconsitant play and a patchwork offensive line. The good news is the Vikings have a pretty easy schedule remaining with a lot of match ups that are favorable to the passing game....So there is hope.

The interception by Bradford he was getting hit as Siirles missed his block and Fusco is too late to react and help out. Not saying Bradford played well. He was not getting the ball out quickly as he had in previous games. That to me suggests that the receivers were not open early on in their routes, but I haven't watched the game to see what the receivers were doing specifically as I only watched it live.

They need to give him at least three carries a game. He is their best running option right now. I don't think he carried the ball once in Philadelphia.

Cordarrelle Patterson is in the league's concussion protocol.
He missed Thursday's practice, and is suddenly questionable for Monday's game against the Bears. Patterson has been a much bigger part of the offense in recent weeks, catching 16 passes over his past three games.

Ugghh, just when I was ready to consider him as a bye week/injury/lack of production from my so-called starters fill-in. A home game on Monday night against the worst-rated defense against receivers was certainly tempting me, but absent some clear evidence by Sunday morning that CP will be a full-go Monday night, I am unwilling to gamble.

Patterson didn't practice on Friday either so seems doubtful he will be cleared or be featured much although the Vikings do have an extra day to prepare.

Can't afford to take the risk with how late he's playing, even on the team's where I'm so desperate that he's an option. Went Sproles over him in one and Tyreek Hill in another (rebuild).

With Montgomery inactive I have to start Patterson in 2 leagues cause Monty was in the WR slot and not the flex, so... here's to hoping he plays. In a third league I think I'm playing Don Jackson over Patterson.
